Williamson, Bigirimana And Haidara Start Against Benfica

benfica

We are just learning the starting eleven for Newcastle and it looks like Mike Williamson will indeed start alongside Yanga-Mbiwa at the back,  to give the Newcastle defense some height to combat the threat of Oscar Cordozo.

We had thought Mike Williamson may be brought in from the cold and this is a great chance for big Mike to show what he can do for Newcastle in the absence of Steven Taylor, who picked up an injury in training yesterday morning.

And 19 year-old Gael Bigirimana is given a huge chance by manager Alan Pardew to show what he can do in such an important match tonight, but Gael is still preferred to James Perch – who is on the bench.

Gael will be on the right hand side of midfield it seems – and is surprisingly preferred to Marveaux, so a couple of surprises in Alan Pardew’s selection tonight.

We have to think Gael has been very impressive in training to get a start in such a huge match for Newcastle.

On the bench is Hatem Ben Arfa, which is great to see,  and surprisingly Sylvain Marveaux is on the bench, and Sylvain doesn’t get a starting place tonight, in spite of being our Man of the Match against Fulham. 18 year-old Adam Campbell has again earned a place on the bench.

Maybe Alan Pardew wants to ensure we have a clean sheet with say 30 minutes to go,  and then bring on the likes of Marveaux and Ben Arfa to open up the Benfica defense – and there are a number of players who will be fresh for Sunday and Sunderland.

A bit of a surprise in the Benfica team is that Oscar Cordozo starts on the bench.

We need to keep a clean sheet tonight if we have a decent chance of going through.

Howay The Lads!!

Perch must be injured? He was class against Anzi Mankini with MYM at the back – a team that also played footy on the ground. Hmm…

I never repost. But here goes.
It’s one thing to oppose the conduct of a war. It’s something completely different to mock your people as they are about to go into action. People are excited, apprehensive, proud, and worried Beattie. Don’t you get any of that?

Not as confident as I was earlier today. That is more of a team trying to protect a lead rather than getting goals. Willo hasn’t started in ages yet gets the nod over Perch and also Marv has been dropped. Very strange indeed. I don’t think it would have been a sellout tonight if they knew that would be the team. Still possible though HWTL 🙂

Haidara will get such a big roar when his name’s read out and when he comes on, should be a confidence boost for the lad 😀

Also Ed says we’ve got Williamson to combat the height of Cardozo, but Cardozo doesn’t appear to be starting??

COME ON NEWCASTLE. Hopefully this team will nick a goal and then at 70th minute we will unleash our three impact subs, Marveaux, Ben Arfa and the legend himself.

when i look at the team he has chosen i really do feel for all the fans who went to show support because this game is going to be so boring with no two very good players marvo and perch both on the bench all i can say is bye bye europa league and FVCK off pardew.

Dont get this team at all. 4 -1-1 so Bigi on the right??

Far too negative for my liking, can only assume perch and Marv are carrying little niggles.

Him and Benny to come on in the second half to change the game.

Crikey missed the new post so I will try again…

Evening gents. I have been reading this blog for years and have finally decided to join the party.

I’m a toon fan in Nottingham so as you can imagine I am lacking a big group of toon fans to converse with. I often rely on the witty banter found on here to see me through.

Little nervous for tonight, Benfica have a lot of technical ability but if the atmosphere is big and st James’ is rocking I think the boys can see us through.

Great to see Haidara back for tonight, looks like quite a player in the making, perhaps less of a liability than santoon. I expect a huge roar when he makes his first big challenge.

I’ve got my Liverpool supporting flat mate wearing our shirt for tonight and getting ready for party later! (here’s hoping!)

Right you know what the fickle plastic fans are out in force, and the line up hasn’t even been posted more than ten mins.

I love this club, but some “fans” sicken me. See you on the other side.

As Duncan Bannatyne would say (yes Ian I’m usurping this phrase) “I’m oot”

Right lads. I’m going to go get ready for the game. Try and enjoy it and remember the game is at least 90 minutes long, don’t write us off before we’ve even started, plenty of time to be down afterwards if needs be.

    For now, let’s support. Peace

I can understand Pardew’s game plan, not sure I exactly agree with it. I can imagine if we had gone gun ho blazing attack from the first minute we would probably score 1 and concede 1 or two on counter attack. It is understandable that Marveaux isn’t starting because he is not 100% fit. Not worth risking especially with a crucial game on sunday.

They’re also not starting Rodrigo which is good for us as he looked really dangerous in the first leg. No Rodrigo and no Cardozo definitely helps us, but then no Taylor, Marveaux and Ben Arfa certainly doesn’t help us…

i like this line up. Really glad he didnt start marveaux. HBA on the bench gives us options. I just HOPE he doesnt play Anita in central midfield and bigirimana on the wing. If its bigi and cabs in the middle and anita and jonas on the wings, i think its a balanced line up.

We’ve had this discussion before, yes you’ve got the DVDs, yes you’ve got the tattoos, yes you go to some games (I lived there for a year and went to over 20 games for your information) but you’re missing the key fact that you’re an absolute moron.

I don’t mean that to be offensive (well a little bit) but nearly everything you spout is politically incorrect bile so I’d rather dissociate myself from people like you.

i am not negative very often but when we are so desperate for a trophy and this being our best chance for years what do you expect when he has picked such a bad team with such a lack of attack.
when he has decided to play hadaira who has only just returned himself i can’t see injuries being the reason for marvo and perch on the bench.
it is as if he thing the scum game is more important.
i myself would much rather get into the semi than to beat the scum.
