The Daily Mail is reporting that Newcastle may try to bring in Toulouse left-sided defender Toulouse left back Cheikh M’Bengue in the summer.
Cheikh M’Bengue – Newcastle target in the summer
Newcastle were first linked with Cheikh in March two years ago, and Chief Scout Graham Carr has watched him since that time.
Cheikh played 12 times for the France U21 side and has 10 caps for Senegal, and the left back has played 171 times in total for Toulouse with two goals, since making his debut in September of 2007, as a 19 year-old.
The interesting news in the Mail is that they say that Cheikh will come in as a replacement for Davide Santon, if he is sold in the summer.
His former club Inter-Milan have expressed an interest in the player, and could have even bid for Davide last January, but his agent Renzo Contratto does not think that a move will materialize for David this summer.
This is what Contratto told Radio Crc a couple of weeks ago:
“I believe that Davide will remain in England because Newcastle want to count on him next season too.” “The club believe that he still has great room for improvement.”
Davide is currently out with a hamstring strain he picked up against Fulham, and is not expected back for a number of weeks, and we expect 20 year-old Massadio Haidara to play at left back in his place.
Davide has played 38 times for Newcastle this season with one goal, and has made a total of 65 appearances in the almost two seasons he has been on Tyneside, since he joined from Inter-Milan for £5M.
We think he’ll still be at Newcastle come September.
