We had said after the game that Sunderland won the game yesterday because they wanted it more than Newcastle, and we never accepted Pardew’s excuse that our players were tired. – that’s nonsense – especially in a game against Sunderland.
Alan Shearer – Sunderland wanted it more
Last weekend we had almost the same team starting that had played the previous Thursday night, and we ran Fulham off their feet in that second half.
But it was different yesterday and the Sunderland players were prepared well for this game – while Newcastle were not. – and were still basking in their courageous efforts of Thursday night – even if they were unsuccessful
And lack of desire at Newcastle is always completely unacceptable – and if our French contingent didn’t know that before yesterday’s game they will now – with the reaction of Geordie fans understandably very unhappy – and that’s an understatement.
This is what Alan Shearer said in the Sun about Newcastle’s dismal performance:
“Sometimes in life you have to hold up your hands and say: ‘We were poor’ – however much it hurts,” “Newcastle did not deserve anything from the game, and the biggest concern for any fan was seeing the players in the red and white shirts wanting it more.”
“The French guys who came into the Newcastle team have been doing well, but it didn’t look like they realised the magnitude of this fixture.”
“Generally, it has been much better since they arrived at the club in January and they have been playing well – but maybe they didn’t understand the derby, as they didn’t perform.”
“Paolo Di Canio had his players wound up for the day, so you have to say congratulations,” “He has had a tough time for differing reasons in the first couple of weeks in charge. They found it tough against Chelsea, but that will be forgotten after this result.”
“Di Canio did his job and his players also showed the same passion for the game as their manager. That is a massive result for them as they were in real danger.”
“Sunderland proved to their manager they do not want to go down, but if you didn’t know the league table you would think Newcastle were the ones bang in trouble.”
“Their defending was poor, there was no creativity in midfield and Toon were poor up front as well. They never got started in the first half and deserved to be a goal down at the break.”
“The decision to disallow Papiss Cisse’s effort will probably be mentioned in the aftermath, but that would be masking over the fact it was a poor performance. To be honest, we were lucky to get away with conceding three.”
“I think even the staunchest Newcastle fans, including myself, cannot say anything different.”
We think Alan has it exactly right – he hit the nail on the head – lack of desire from our Newcastle players is a big concern.
It could be that our players were suffering from playing their 5th game in 15 days but Alan Pardew will now be under pressure to show he can inspire the Newcastle players into some good performances through the last five games of the season when we play just once a week.
That’s what Di Canio did with the Sunderland players yesterday – however overstated his celebrations of the goals were – well he is Italian. :D.
And the Newcastle players will be in the dock too.
Yesterday was utterly and completely unacceptable and if players are not going to give 100% for the side – especially against Sunderland – they shouldn’t bother even turning up.

Comment #41To some of the base support here, you would think we are already gone and taken the Drop !
While i accept some of the Doom and Gloom on here after yesterday i refuse to be down beat !
It would appear that beating the Scum is more important than our Prem Status. It may be the Local Derby, but its just one game in which we were abyssmal !
We need to start thinking about next week against WBA and start just getting behind the Club, players and Pardew too!
At times like this, they need us more than ever !

Comment #46Prior to Sunday’s match the blogs were full of how the Magpies were going to put it across the Mackems by a hatful of goals. Overconfident rubbish from those bloggers. This was Sunderland’s Cup Final and league championship match rolled into one, and with a new, and possibly inspirational manager, it was always going to be a tough one to win.
Now we get a reverse over reaction, with repeated calls for Pardew to be sacked. Rubbish once again. This is the guy, manager of the season last year incidently, who has had to negotiate a long Europa cup run, finally losing out due in large part to a catastrophic back pass, to one of the best teams in the competition, with a squad of players clearly too small to cope with the extra games involved and at the same time do themselves justice in the premiership. In addition to which, he lost his main striker, through no fault of his own, hence the goals drought, while the team has suffered injury upon injury throughout the campaign.
Pardew is not a manager to slag off his players to the media, and what he had to say to them in the dressing room after the poor performance on Sunday will remain there.
It was a poor performance, but it was no more than that. The manager knows it and the players know it. It was not the end of the world, so get over it some of you bloggers and get a sense of perspective.

Bordeaux was one of our only two good performances this season, the other was Wigan when they had 9 first teamers out. Most of our first teamers like Jonas missed the Bordeaux game.
We need some midfielders/ wingers in the summer that can contribute going forward. It’s no good playing defensive midfielders like sissoko behind the striker. We also need a striker who can come off the bench and score more than one goal a season. Sorry shola, it’s time to go.

We’ve got far more points in the games following a midweek Europa tie so we cn’t believe that bull from him & in the group stages he largely played the youths. this isn’t an over reaction, people have been holding back from saying what they think for a long time to give him a chance. sunderland was his last chance, although for me I’ve thoroughly hated him since his excuses after the brighton match. i can’t abide excuse makers and people who scapegoat others to get themselves out of trouble. also his tactics against reading & man city were McLarenesque. His fear of losing is greater than his desire to win.
