Haidara, Perch And Gutierrez All Start

west brom emblem

The Newcastle team has just been announced, and it seems the reliable James Perch has been brought into defensive midfield, and Massadio Haidara starts at left-back.

This is Massadio’s very first Premier League start, but this lad has so far looked a good player for Newcastle, and Massadio is one of three changes made by manager Alan Pardew, with Perch coming in, and of course Rob Elliot starting in place of the injured Tim Krul.

It’s that 4-2-3-1 formation with Cabaye and Perch in front of the back four and Gutierrez, Sissoko and Gouffran just behind lone striker Papiss Cisse up front.

Massadio Haidara – first Premier League start

As expected, veteran goalkeeper Steve Harper is on the bench, as is Ben Arfa, and also 18 year-old local lad Adam Campbell.

We need to see a spirited performance from Newcastle at the Hawthorns today, after the listless performance and humiliating defeat last Sunday, and we need to get a result.

For West Brom the dangerous Lukaku starts up front and Irish International Shane Long is on the bench.

Howay The Lads!!

Teams:

West Brom Ben Foster; Billy Jones, Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson, Goran Popov; Graham Dorrans, Claudio Yacob, James Morrison, Chris Brunt; Marc-Antoine Fortune, Romelu Lukaku
Substitutes: Boaz Myhill, Steven Reid, Liam Ridgewell, Kemar Roofe, Markus Rosenberg, Jerome Thomas, Shane Long

Newcastle United: (4-2-3-1): Rob Elliot; Mathieu Debuchy, Steven Taylor, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Massadio Haidara; James Perch, Yohan Cabaye (c); Jonas Gutierrez, Moussa Sissoko, Yoan Gouffran; Papiss Cisse
Substitutes: Steve Harper, Mike Williamson, Dan Gosling, Vurnon Anita, Hatem Ben Arfa, Adam Campbell, Shola Ameobi

Referee: Mike Jones (Cheshire)

well again it is looking like a totally defensive team with no creativity at all
mike for god sake bring in some wide men and forwards next season. it is simple the problems are we are so over loaded with defensive midfielder tiote sissoko perch jonas bigi and playing cabaye as if he is another one, we need creative players.

Naw – Catchy has repeated his view that its worth losing games to see Pardew out – it ain’t frustation it’s blind hatred

Love the youtube crit – the best bit is the ‘overromanticising’ – it’s true we’re probably more mediocre than we think but we’re still all on the Toon rollercoaster.

its not great but very limited options today, could argue for anita to be in but i don’t think he brings much more.

Its a team capable of winning, hope cabaye is further up the field and sissoko is deeper but doubt it will be.

    3-1 to the toon

Anita must be regretting comng here, even playing crap and with injuries he still cant get selected.

Still say the best we played was with Anita, Cabaye and Marveaux in the middle against man u and arsenal away. Yes we lost both games but only in the last 15 mins and we scored 6 goals away from home…

Although not watching, I’m glad Perch is starting, albeit due to the haphazard Tiote being injured. Perch is an all round better player than Tiot and infinitely more reliable: no fuss, no headstrong machismo, just effective breaking up of play and far more capable on the ball. Look more solid with him in there

    I’ll go 1-1.

I am seriously considering driving Vurnon Anita back to Ajax where he is actually wanted. The guy was on of the first names on their team sheet and a Dutch international yet can’t get a look in under Pardew FFS. I like Perch and all but Anita plays football on a whole other planet. I give up.

    Anyway HWTL.

in fairness to catchy i think he wants us to lose so pardew goes on the basis that even if he wins enough to stay, it wont be enough to ever push us on consistently.

So rather a short term loss for long term gains instead of just constant mediocrity.

I don’t agree with the principle but see what he means.

If we’d got the quality replacement for Ba and Benny had come back fit we’d be playing 4-3-3 by now – we just missed out on the Remy transfer that’d allow Pards to play something else. Gouffran was not top pick but squad player. Can’t really see Shola playing 95 mins in a 4-4-2 can you ?

Sissoko in the hole again then. Ah, what could’ve been…
No further commenting required, as we’ll play hoofball no matter what formation we use.
In a 8-1-1-formation with Shefki Kuqi in a lone front role, we would play hoofball. If we would have Messi, Xavi and Iniesta in or team playing an “attacking” formation? No problem, we would just play it over their heads towards Ameobi.

Gaaaahhhh! This doesn’t work man Pardew!! Please say Cabaye is in the hole. For 2 reasons, he’s more effective there, and it cuts his defensive workrate down which is good as he has looked tired. Please Mr Alan, don’t balls it up, we could be safe by 5pm!

Can’t work out why Anita hasn’t got integrated in the starting 11 either, reckon he’s a canny player too – suspect it’s concern about him being bossed

i like that point you make pardew doesn’t know how to drop players marvo was not able to get into the side hadaira will be likely dropped if HBA returns to the starting 11 and jonas moved to FB perch keeps getting dropped as soon as tiote returns.
pardew should be the england manager because atleast england play rubbish teams until the quarter finals and don’t play many games so he can do the constant same starting 11 like most managers do.

And yeah, Anita must feel so aggrieved, to be overlooked by a manager who simply doesn’t know how to use him, he was in an upward curve at Ajax, Pardew has halted that at best, something he’s adept at with technical players.

anita is being misused. he is anoymous as a dm but does a fine job as a cm/am. I also think he is our second best right back. He shouldve been groomed as cabayes understudy when he joined or allowed to develop at rb. instead pardumb has turned him into a jack of all trades master of none

Would love it if it turned into a 442 with Jonas and Sissoko on the wings overlapped by Debuchy and Haidara but I doubt it

One final point, it’s quite interesting, how Obertan is called all the names under the Sun, including Overran, for doing precisely what Sissoko does even more frequently than him., yet Sissoko still has darling status. We all know how long a few good performances can cloud people’s judgement for, case in point been Tiote, who’s been shockingly bad for well over a year, yet most are only just taking notice.

The problem is that no matter what fancy formation we use, if the players at this club aren’t trained to play a fast moving, passing game – it’s all no good. We could play the most exciting, Barca-esque formations in the world, but if our mentality is centered around defense and hoofing the ball, it will get us nowhere.

A ot of people here just dish out a recipe on how we should play, but there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes changes that would have to be done before we could look good in those formations.
