Suarez Charged With Violent Conduct – 3 Match Ban Insufficient

6:04 pm, Monday, April 22nd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 286 Comments

The FA have announced today that they have charged Luis Suarez of Liverpool with violent conduct after he took a bite out of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during yesterday’s game.

Suarez bites Ivanovic

Luis Suarez – taking a bite out of the Chelsea defender

The incident was not seen by match officials, and therefore can be subsequently reviewed retrospectively by the FA’s disciplinary committee.

That was not possible for Callum McManaman’s vicious tackle on our very own Massadio Haidara a few weeks ago – because one official saw the tackle – and presumably thought it was fair – which is simply ridiculous.

This is that statement issued by the English FA a few minutes ago:

The FA has charged Liverpool forward Luis Suarez with violent conduct.

The charge follows an incident with Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in yesterday’s fixture at Anfield on 21 April 2013.

The incident was not seen by the match officials and has therefore been retrospectively reviewed – click here for a video explanation of ‘not seen incidents’.

It is alleged that the conduct of Suarez constitutes violent conduct and it is The FA’s contention that the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient in these circumstances.

Suarez has until 6pm on Tuesday 23 April to respond to the charge, thereafter an Independent Regulatory Commission will be convened this Wednesday, 24 April.

Suarez has already bitten another player, when he was playing for Ajax in November of 2010 – and at that time he got a seven match ban – so surely it has to be more than that this time – otherwise this guy will continue to have players for lunch.

It’s simply despicable conduct by the Uruguayan, and it’s bringing some terrible headlines to Liverpool FC, and the fans are furious with their player.

Suarez was given an eight-match ban and a £40K fine by the Football Association after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United’s left-back Patrice Evra in December of 2011.

Liverpool have already fined Suarez, who has asked the money to be donated to the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

This lad has to get his act together – quickly – and it’s certain he will not be playing at St. James Park on Saturday.

Comments welcome.

Bounced into taking action aftre the feeding frenzy in the press. Pity the double standards haven’t changed . ..McManaman should also have faced action – as that was a carer threatening lunge

  • 3 yo-yo // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:10 PM

Roshan – he’ll be banned by Weds evening. He ain’t going to appeal unless its more than a 6-7 match ban. It needs to be comparable to the Dutch FA’s action.

Good. Dirty little cheat. I don’t care how good a footballer he is, the guy has zero class.

How people can claim he is good for the game is beyond me.

There is no way Liverpool will appeal any sanction, no matter how severe.Their reoputation is on the line here too. They will not want to be seen defending such a detestable act.

i have to ask, is it really over the top? it will get him out of the club quicker, and not quick enough

this just didnt happen overnight, this has been coming for 2 seasons if you ask me, masked over by a 5th place

also im not assming anything about how they feel about the guy,
BUT ifi was a pro footballer, playing for some of the top teams in world football, there is not a cat in hells chance id be happy playing that type of football,
so i am assuming you think they do like it and thats why there right behind the guy

for me we have a few players that will love pardew as manager, but im gussing the rest will be thinking this is hurting my international carrer,

world cup next year, some tough calls this summer

  • 9 yo-yo // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:19 PM

Well Beattie for one would rather he played against us than didn’t play – for the strange reason that he wants us to face class footballers whenever possible to show we can hack it against the best – and that he just wants to watch the best footballers. I’d rather take the points if they come easier without Suarez.

Suarez is to football what Tyson was to boxing

  • 15 Tinman - Pardwho? // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:21 PM

Have to agree with the people condemning Pardews most recent comments.
As a competitive person in general I see no reason why we should not be trying to win all of our remaining games.
Granted, I dont think we will, in fact I would almost go as far as saying I know we wont.
I also agree that at the end of the day it wont make a difference whether we just stay up or comfortably stay up.
Nevertheless we should be trying to win all of our games. Its a matter of pride. Even if he doesnt think we are going to he should still be trying to get the image of winning them all into the players heads.
Like Dok says, we need to be positive. Countless studies have shown positive thinking directly relates to positive results so it seems like utter madness to me to go playing down our chances.
The guy cant do anything right at the moment…

  • 16 yo-yo // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:26 PM

Juat in from work but have followed your argument that the biggest issue for us now is simply confidence – and that explains the highly erratic form and some of Pardew’s strange calls.

I think there is a lot of truth in that – we never really got the momentum we needed after the new guys came in – yes they bolstered us but are clearly not being played as a well though out tactical unit – and are not even playing thst well a lot of the time. I’d have to agree that confidence is the killer unknown in loss of form. It is not simply AP’s own loss of form as a manager but also individual international standard players not even being able to pick out 5 yard passes.

  • 18 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:28 PM

Catchy…I think you’re asking the wrong person, as I’ve already answered that part.

I know you feel this has been going on for 2 seasons, I don’t. Whilst there was still work to do at the end of last season, I was more than happy to allow him time to kick on. Has he? Not at all this season. Do I think it’s all down to him? No, but of course, he has to shoulder some of the blame. So is the big question, how much?

I am already on board that if Ashley was to replace with a better manager then i’d be all for it, why wouldn’t I? Despite popular belief, it’s not some big love in between Pardew and I.

A question for you then. If you think we have to force Ashleys hand to replace Pardew, what sort of replacement do you actually think we’ll get? If Ashley has ambition, then surely he will already be looking for a new manager without our help.

My feeling is, if it’s down to us kicking off, we will just get more of the same, so no progress. This season was always going to be a huge learning curve, Pardew had no experience with European football and nor was he given the tools to help him adjust. Basically is was always a tall order and it was made even harder for him (and yes, he hasn’t helped himself along the way).

I’m not going to comment on the players feelings. What they say in the press will be monitored, so any praise doesn’t hold credibility, other than though we can only make assumptions and you know what they say when you assume….it makes an ass out of you and me (ass-u-me).

Agree completely though on your last line, some tough calls this summer.

  • 19 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:31 PM

yo-yo…For me it’s key. I do get the argument that part of this “may” be coming from Pardew, but it is guesswork.

I just don’t see how a knee jerk reaction is the way to go. Finish this season and then evaluate.

Having Di Canio come in and do what he’s done doesn’t help argue that change now is madness :)

    Jesper…Age? That surely can’t be it :)

  • 20 armchair fan // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:33 PM

Just watched all of our goals from last season on youtube, we definitely miss Ba… What happened to that team :(

  • 21 NUFCarter // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:33 PM

Agree, confidence is an issue evident on the pitch most with cabaye recently. I think a new manager will bring a lot of confidence to the team.
But I think he won’t be sacked and if he is it will be at the end of the season – which I’m hoping. Because now would be too early. New manager in the summer = new start write off this season and look forward to things nufc deserve. I would like to see Pardew replaced by a better manager I’m sure everyone will because there are plenty but see what he has for the last four games and then send him off with a thanks, but not good enough.

  • 22 jonobbad // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:34 PM

Can’t believe it’s still being debated.
Pardew isn’t good enough for us and never will be.
Why are fans even making a case for him?
Why risk giving him time next year to potentially put us back another season.
Based on the last two and a half years I don’t want him and I think most passionate fans are the best same.
Stability helps but you still have to be a good manager.
You can sugar coat a turd but it’s still a turd.

Suarez will miss the rest of the season and will more than likely remain at Liverpool this summer. It’s sad but it will be yesterdays chip paper in no time at all. A real example eventually needs to be made by the incompetent FA!

2.vulgar. A person regarded as obnoxious or contemptible

    yep sums it up

  • 28 Jail for Ashley // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:41 PM

I really don’t think Pardew will get the bullet there’s a definite reason Mike Ashley hired him in paricular and it couldn’t have been his CV I think it has a lot more to do with the fact of his outstanding ability to tell us lies with impunity and without an apparent conscience.

  • 29 carl // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:42 PM

I framed my response to you before reading other replies. Surely sacking Pardew at this time would totally destabilise the team. This at a time when a game plan is being fashioned for the Liverpool game. Aside from a more creative Anita in place of Perch and Sissoko playing somewhat deeper and Cabaye in a attacking midfield role the side is selected. Watching Saturdays game in the first half it was hard to envisage the turn around in the second half. The. First half movement off the ball was excellent and all that was missing was two further goals and game over. I won’t go over our second half display because it’s had a good airing on here. It does seem that a number of players Gouf, Sissoko Cabaye, Taylor and Gutierrez in particular looked knackered in the second half. This is something of concern but a structured pre season schedule with a full complement of the newly acquired players should ensure a better PL season next time. This is not to paper over any cracks because a shake up in the coaching and playing squad is required. Grass roots to Harper with around 8 players leaving.
You highlighted the fact that by me saying the end of the season was time enough to judge Pardew and our season as just unnecessary delay. In my world its not unusual to be assessed in terms of performance annually. It seems natural to me when the final whistle of the final game is blown that Ashley/ Llambias and Pardew evaluate
the season and determine the way forward. Carr would subsequently become involved in looking forward to next season.
I fail to see your point on Pardew under performing.! As recently as last Friday you forecast a 1-1 draw with WBA. So meeting your expectations. At this stage of the season it’s points not always performance that counts.

  • 30 DokToon // Apr 22, 2013 at 6:43 PM

this just in from fox sports, usa…

The FA have decided that the so-called “bite” by Luis Suarez is not a reason for suspension, citing the referee who said he did see it, and felt no need to take action. “it was a simple nibble, like one would give to their spouse, nothing more, nothing less”, said the ref, who asked for anonymity.

The FA is looking at a possible diners club card, which would entitle Suarez to all you can eat buffets throught England, and thereby appeasing his vampire like hunger on opponents. When Suarez was asked about the incident, he would only mutter, “i thought ivonovic was russian for chicken”.

More disconcerting, is that KFC is looking to become the new sponsor of LFC, in hopes to keep Luis playing through the end of the season.

Shane – “way of life” is fine, as in: the way of life of the Eskimos or the way of life of the French. A “way in life” is not a common phrase and has a much more specific sense – which might be why you think it would be better.

    Ibiza/ Transfer
A QPR fan told me after asking me who I followed as he thought I wasn’t from down sarf. Seemed genuine and claimed an association through QPR. I would see it as a retrograde step and it would likely ruffle Pardew’s feathers. Meets Tads suggestion of if Pardew does not perform then there is a ready made replacement.
I have a feel for Ibiza’s view on Pardew but what’s yours? I remember some months ago you saying you would take a view at the end of the season.

Carl…I see. Well I only know a few QPR fans and like the rest of the club they are all delusional :)

I like the idea of a ready made replacement, I really don’t like the idea of it being Redknapp tbh. Take all footballing reasons out of the picture and you’re left with a man who doesn’t even want to be there. He’s not good enough imo to have half on board.

  • 72 Transfer Sage // Apr 22, 2013 at 7:31 PM

when jan started i said my view was to see how he does by the end of the season and judge him then.

However watching us since then has convinced me he isn’t the right man for the job. I think although results have improved with the better players the performances are very similar.

whether we have a full strength team or a weak one we play the same way, we sit too deep, usually from the start, but always after we take the lead.

West brom annoyed me, we got way too deep straight away in the 2nd half. Not only does it take away our goal threat, it takes away our solid defense as we invite too much pressure on the defense.

I’d like to see pardew go, don’t want enough of other leagues to say exactly who should replace him though.

With regard to the Pardew debate:-

What people are still failing to grasp despite in depth explanations from Beattie, Rotonda and Catchy etc. is that we are not complaining about the poor results and League position we are in as much as the footballing philosophy and boring negative style of play Pardew has given us for over 2 years.

    To simplify things ,

We dont want to play long hopeful balls to a lone striker.
We don t want to defend 1 0 leads if we score first.
We dont want a team of defensive midfielders.
We dont want all our creative players brainwashed into tracking back and thinking defensively.
We want some creativity and variation from corners and set pieces.
We want to see quick passing and movement off the ball.
We want the goalie to distribute the ball to one of our players not a hopeful punt upfield.
We want more players in the box when we attack.
We want our main striker made more aware of the offside rule.

We want to be entertained and enjoy watching our team play.

Pardew said from the outset he knew the Geordie public would omly accept an exciting attacking style.

Well despite all the injuries and tiredness and too many games Mr Pardew has set the team up in an over cautious outdated way to cover up his own inadequacies at being able to coach the modern game.

Whatever players this man has at his disposal he has given us no inclination that he will change his style.

Even if we were playing an u12 girls football team we couldn’t score a goal like that.

We’d go 1-0 after 5 minutes and sit back and defend. Then the u12 school girls would score and go onto win.

Pardew would blame the fact they didn’t have school on the weekends.

The sad thing about Betty’s post is that only a few will get it and even less will give it the acknowledgement it deserves

A good argument is when 2 sides can acknowledge it. There are people on this blog currently who absolve Pardew of everything and fail to even notice the points raised by Betty.

It shows how caught up in their own world they truly are. They only argue the points of pro Pardew when they have something to say. When they’ve got nothing they say nothing, not even any respect for an opposing view.

Alan_Pard_Who…I think you’re wrong in your judgement of those that still back Pardew.

You say that they wont see those issues, when they do.

Your view on them can be paralleled with their view of posters like you. We think you’re too negative, you think we’re blind. There is middle ground, but when people are debating on here they tend to take the extreme and that is the same of both parties imo.

For me, we can do better and worse than Pardew. He’s a middle of the road manager. My thinking is he was probably hired because of that.

For me it’s all a bit pointless, if Ashley wants to push on then he will, if he doesn’t and we force his hand, he will likely only replace with similar as that is all he would want. With that in mind, my favoured approach would be to upgrade certain aspects, mainly in the coaching department and see where it takes us.

Pardew can do a job, maybe not the one we all want though. Stepping stones imo.

  • 126 Jail for Ashley // Apr 22, 2013 at 8:24 PM

We could do with Man U giving these lot a proper morale sapping hiding, it puts us in a position when they play the mackems though, if we can manage to beat Lpool then I suppose a draw would be a good result, it’ll be interesting to see how the crowd reacts to Pardew if he manages to lose a fixture hes won twice now.

I thought at the beginning of the season that had Pardew been backed in the summer that we could have been pushing for a CL spot but I now think that that theory has been dispelled by Pardews tactical negativity, I still do think however that had he have been backed we wouldn’t be in the dire position we’re in now, which for me raises the question of Mike Asleys ambition or lack of it, it baffles me that people can look me in the keyboard and claim he has genuine ambition after he set out for a team that finished fifth to aim for a top ten finish.

Totally agree, I always stated that we should’ve sign Vertonghen. What a player. Alderweireld is similar, so hopefully we’ll at least make a bid for him. Vertonghen turns defense into attack and scores goals and creates assists.

Vertonghen could be utilised as a striker. We definitely need a bloke who can chip in with 8-10 goals from centre half.

I think he has looked shaky like but I will forgive him as it is his first season in the PL. IMO I think he is used to more time on the ball in France and doesn’t get pressured into mistakes as often. Much like Collo a few years ago. One thing I will say is he doesn’t lack the physical ability needed as he likes to get stuck in and wins plenty of headers. I still want to see him paired up with Collo.

  • 156 Transfer Sage // Apr 22, 2013 at 8:50 PM

8-10 is a lot for CB and i dare bet none do that consistently

I do think a CB who can chip in with 3-5 would be a great addition.

We would never have got vertongen though, he turned down arsenal for spurs, seemed set on them, we didn’t have a chance.

  • 157 Jail for Ashley // Apr 22, 2013 at 8:50 PM

Cording to Torq Toon who’s watched him a lot the guy is supposedly a class act, so maybe he just needs to settle in to the different pace of it here, I just hope that if Collo does leave that he is replaced so we don’t have another situation where Mbwia knows he is undroppable.

P….I’m guessing you don’t agree? Pardew has to take some of the blame for sure, but we’ve all seen a lack of fight within the team and you can’t help but feel a Nolan type would do a bit more to galvanize the troops so to speak.

i’m sorry, i’m not a good trainer, i will try harder

yeh good point there, villa are managing to really pressure them, man utd struggling to keep the ball but it looks like equally villa improving but man utd taking their foot off the gas.

I just think in terms of us it happens all too often and usually straight after we score in 2nd half or if we score first half as soon as we start 2nd half. We just need to make sure we don’t ease off to quickly I think, we aren’t good enough to do that.

  • 190 jimmysmith // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:18 PM

There are obviously pro’s and cons to Ashley’s lean financial approach to running the club.

Here’s a potentially highly problematic consequence, we can’t keep our best players, we can’t attract top players.

Colo’s unhappiness and also Tiote’s strange under performance could be a result of perceived failure to compete financially at the upper end of the market.

Colo has publicly questioned the clubs ambition and Tiote I believe wanted to go when the big offers came in for him and was asked to stay against his real wishes.

If you have developed your game at Newcastle, where then is the incentive to stay, and likewise, if you are a top prospect, the only real inducement to come is if you see us as a stepping stone to the highest levels. Mbiwa evenly publicly stated as much.

I think this approach does limit us to a buy low, sell high upper mid table club if it is a long term strategy.

I just think we lack as pundits say “killer instinct” that the top 6 teams have. as much as i like Cisse and without him this season we would of struggled so much he does miss the sitters which would of made life against west brom and other teams much better

  • 192 p // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:19 PM

I said all along that Pardew is mediocre.

The key thing missing this season really has been a second quality striker to share the burden with Cisse, give us a bit more danger in attack. One obviously compatible with Cisse.

Of course, injuries have not helped but, you have to say regardless of having 50 games we have had enough quality to have attained more that 37 points.

Pardew was found out this season as being just okay. If he was really good, he would have done better with what he has got.

  • 193 Big Pappa Cissé // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:19 PM

Collymore probably never watches any of our games unless they are against the top 4 and only makes his assumptions from our results. Can’t stand the woman beating moron.

I really like cisse too, i just think as a lone striker you need somebody who can score but also create/link play, cisse really struggles with this.

Need a tevez, suarez, rvp etc

Cisse is fine if we have say hba and gouffran playing as part of a front 3 and coming quite central, but when our players stay wide it’s difficult for cisse and he is often the only one and the defenders mark him out of the game for long periods. Also nothing played into him sticks.

BPC, I agree, he sounds like he is not well informed

  • 197 Jail for Ashley // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:24 PM

If Pardew goes who is Mike Ashley going to find that will tell us we can’t compete with the big clubs and that star strikers won’t be sold and that four big players will arrive in the summer which inevitably won’t.

  • 198 Transfer Sage // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:24 PM

The thing what annoys me most with pardew is that he has shown in a few games this and last year that he can get us playing some really good, passing, attacking football.

The problem is for whatever reason we don’t play it very often. It seems tactical on his part which is just strange and i really can’t see why.

It’s not like this current style is working so not sure why he won’t at least try something else.

  • 199 Transfer Sage // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:26 PM

If he wants a good manager there will be plenty to work with him

Clubs in europe have much harsher financial restraints in place, a lot have to sell constantly and buy younger, untried players to improve.

I think that we will have plenty queuing up for the job if pardew gets the chop.

  • 200 JTOONJ // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:27 PM

    Transfer Sage

Exactly defenders do mark the game out of him, thats why it was brilliant when we had BA as the defenders would mark either one as cisse could score the spectacular or Ba could tap in, and both went on periods of scoring none stop which is the difference this season. I think we need a really pacey winger/striker a oxlade chamberlain or as you guys like a PEA

  • 201 Jackel001 // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:28 PM

On Saturday he really just needs to go for it. If we see that he’s gone for it, attacking football which we should be doing at home against a team that hasn’t got a great defence imo, then i’ll he happier! Must play Benny!

  • 202 p // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:29 PM

TS, yes it’s a bit puzzling. He can pull off a tactical masterstroke one game and then employ tactics which bewilder every single fan and ends in doing badly in the next.

    He’s just not consistent enough.

  • 203 Transfer Sage // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:29 PM

i’d go for pea and mertens…wide man who has goals in him and pea who can play central or slightly wider forward.

would give us those 2, cisse, gouffran and hba as strikers/wide forwards….good options and cover.

  • 204 Jail for Ashley // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:29 PM

  • 205 Transfer Sage // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:31 PM

yeh i cant figure out why. i can only suggest he is too cautious and defensive but when we you see score more and concede less when playing on the front foot not sure why he thinks defending deep is the answer as it makes us weaker all over.

i’d love to be able to ask him why, he may well have a good reason, just as a fan and not seeing the team day in day out in training i really cant see why

  • 206 p // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:31 PM

Jackel agree, he has to go for it like there is nothing to lose. He won’t out-chess BR.

Also he does need to put Benny on until he runs out of steam. This bringing him on with 20 mins to go as an impact sub does not seem to be bearing fruit.

  • 207 Transfer Sage // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:33 PM

If you do pay £20m for a striker you ought to get an RVP or Suarez – both top drawer scorers. (disregarding their characters for just a minute)

  • 212 Transfer Sage // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:37 PM

yeh i know what you mean.

But players like mbiwa, sissoko, debuchy all joined us this winter when we were in free fall

then cabaye joined us when we were in our 2nd season back….so must be some attraction to the club for the foreign boys.

I think they might be unrealistic but players like belhanda has been told he can leave, he’s a good player.

Then andy weinman from villa only has a year left on his contract so an option.

Lukaku wants another loan and to a bigger club than west from, maybe worth asking the question.

there will be lot of options even if they aren’t the obvious ones to us now.

or at least just stand at the gate and shout “why alan”? wwhhhhyyyyyyyyy, why play so defensively every second half when we are battering teams in the first.

we need to plant the seed in his head as none of the backroom staff seem to be able to see it. if they are seeing it, they must be keeping real quiet. Maybe pards is a massive psycho behind closed doors and no one wants to fcuck with him.

  • 219 santonthenewmaldini // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:46 PM

This for me is the final final chance on Saturday for Pardew for me it looks like we have no new injuries so we should be able to play the same team 2 weeks in a row and have a right proper go at Liverpool

If Colo, Marveux, Tiote and Arfa are not 100% fit keep them on the bench and try to build up some rhythm the team that started against West Brom if they apply themselves the same way they did in the 1st half with the high tempo pressing then we can take Liverpool

Liverpool look good when you allow them to press you and play their passing game but when its on the other foot they struggle I think if we employ the same tactics as we did against Southampton at home we will take care of them which was press them all the time and when they go forward look to play it into the channels for Gouffran and Cisse for a quick counter attack

Not mentioned enough as an explanation is Ba’s departure. He started 19 PL games and scored 13 goals. Try taking those goals out of the equation. Cisse from 31 games 8 goals . An equally interesting random statistic is the number of appearances by starting players:
    Cabaye 21 games and 6 goals, Krul 24, Coloccini 19, HBA 13, Santon 31, Saylor 21, Tiote 18.
The decision not to find an alternative option to Remy in the window has cost us dearly. Not that I am suggesting that it’s the only reason for our poor showing this season.
Had RVP signed for city rather than Utd would we know be looking at
    City as PL victors?

  • 223 Transfer Sage // Apr 22, 2013 at 9:59 PM

I think it’s fine he sees us as a stepping stone.

In fairness no matter who we have if a team like man utd, man city, real madrid, inter milan, psg etc come in for any of our players you can’t blame them for going. It would mean higher level, more chance of a trophy and more money.

What we need to do is what spurs have done so well, if good players want to go let them, get top money and use that to improve the team right away (thats our one weakness in transfer market, sell well, buy well, just don’t always buy at the right time).

Players come and go, even man utd can’t keep everyone (ronaldo, tevez, etc) so it’s important to make sure you strengthen when you lose a big player to make the team stronger.

  • 226 p // Apr 22, 2013 at 10:02 PM

    SL – absolutely.

I think a lack of a striker is the most important piece. Especially one with aerial ability.

The whole set piece issue emphasizes the issue.

Andy Carroll in our team would have turned it around completely.

The smallest thing can have the biggest impact. Lack of goals has been our biggest issue. We just do not seem to have a set formula for goals.

Add a goal to 50% of our games this season and we would have been looking a lot better.

Pardew is still a shite manager though.

  • 227 Alan_Pard_Who // Apr 22, 2013 at 10:04 PM

The only way to ensure we’re not a stepping stone is to get successful pretty soon.

    That’s a negative outlook.

I tend to believe that an investment of £30 million in first team players and a new manager would be enough to allow us to threaten the top 4 consistently.

That’s not a lot for the 20th richest club in the world and one of Britain’s richest men.

It doesn’t cost a fortune, it just take the right business model, the right players and the right manager. We’ve got the makings of it.

We need to take the business model to the next level and spend more. It’s ok spending 5-6 million on players but we need a few more purples to compete around the squad and maybe even 1 mega purple.

  • 236 p // Apr 22, 2013 at 10:16 PM

yes we have conceded more goals than anyone bar Reading.

But, you know if you are spending more time at the other end of the field, you concede less goals so it is not like the 2 are not connected.

For the most part we have good defenders.

Okay some have been injured and some have made school boy mistakes this season.

Nevertheless, a lot of the issue as I see it is negative tactics, defending deep one goal leads and not being able to hold the ball up.

  • 237 toonluvva // Apr 22, 2013 at 10:18 PM

  • 238 Alan_Pard_Who // Apr 22, 2013 at 10:20 PM

If we managed to keep our current squad and then added a LW, a AM and a ST you can’t say we wouldn’t do very well. We wouldn’t guarantee success but would be close to being on of the better teams in the league.

    Remy – £6 million
    Belhanda – £8 million
    Draxler – £15 million

Those 3 would transform us and then any outgoings could be replaced. Add a few youngsters to offer cover and there you have it.

I know what you mean, we are 3/4 from competing. I was more meaning that we would never be challenging for the title or a regular champs league team.

I think we could challenge for the top 4 with 4 good signings but with the quality of the current top 5 I meant to say we would find it almost impossible to be a regular top 4 side in the way city and man utd currently are.

We could join the chasing pack in competing though.

I am excited or the summer. Really want to see what we bring in. I know I get shot down for this but in December I was told we’d have a busy January (people can check my comments from December) and it tuned out to be true.

I would much rather PEA or even Siem De Jong and by the looks of things they would cost around 10 11 million

  • 264 Spotlight Kid // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:04 PM

If you win it (the league) every year it becomes the norm and not special. Cup wins are just another common thing and really the only big thing is champions league after that.

Ah ha, so that’s the NUFC masterplan!! I see, we actually WANT to deliberately avoid winning the league for 100 years (only 14 years to go) so it becomes REALLY special. Obviously the tactic of losing FA Cup finals and semi finals a few year ago was all part of the same cunning scheme. Pardew’s appointment now makes perfect sense.

Abstinence makes the hard grow fonder, I have heard.

NUFCarter, maybe he would just continue to improve in the premier league as well. He has crazy skills and a very good cross. He would be our best LW at the club now if we had him. Gouffran is a striker, Jonas is past it, Marv is better in the centre and Benny is better on the right.

It is a problem position for us at the moment, definately needs investment in the summer.

Your right though Carter, we probably should be aiming for someone better. I just think he has all the traits needed to be a top winger, with the right coaching I think he would make it.

I havent seen PEA, sounds good though. However I did watch a lot of Ajax last season, Siem is a great player. He is the dutch Frank Lampard, not quite as good though. Would be decent if we could convince him to fetch Luuk with him 😉

I love how the Man U fans bang on about Old Trafford as being the best ground in England yet on match days (even derby’s) it sounds more like a library. No passion just a bunch of people that will follow anything successful like sheep. Its the way of the world these days, Die hard NUFC fans like us will be a rarer breed in 20 or so years as most young kids support whatever team Bale, Ronaldo, or Messi play for. Sad but true.

  • 268 Tinman - Pardwho? // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:12 PM

Oh and on De Jong, I dont actually think he is the kind of player we need. Unless we are going to lose Cabaye, Arfa, Marv or Sissoko. He plays in a similar position

  • 269 Tinman - Pardwho? // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:14 PM

Big Pappa, its a fathers responsibility to drum it into a future toon fan at a young age :P!

  • 270 stuart no9 // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:14 PM

2 new recruits in the summer and we will have a top 6 side, a good CF and a manager – sorted , it is as easy as that. no complicxations . as brian clough once said ‘ football is a simple game made complicated by pardew. well he didnt really say pardew, but the like.

  • 271 santonthenewmaldini // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:17 PM

De Jong would be amazing for us if we got him with an ambitious manager you could get him , Cabaye, Arfa and Marveux in the same midfield with Sissoko as the brick wall covering the defense !!

Although I worry Anita will not really be giving us any glowing reports and anyone Dutch curious about how one of their star players of last season would not be too complimentary of how we play I mean how the hell can Anita not get a game ?!?We should be changing our play to suit him not the other way around as he plays the game the way it should be played short pass and move with lots of energy

  • 272 Tinman - Pardwho? // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:19 PM

Stuart, I think without a shadow of a doubt we need a winger as well. And obviously any departures need replaced. Agree on Pardew. Personally would be disappointed if Cisse wasnt our starting CF next year unless, think he definately deserves another shot

  • 273 tooninspain // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:20 PM

Hey Trash….I think you have the hots for Ashley. I mean, you never stop talking about him. Probably all that time working away tugging at your radish.

  • 274 Tinman - Pardwho? // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:20 PM

Santon, I like Anita. Think he is terribly under rated. Hopefully he is given more of a chance next season.

  • 275 Big Pappa Cissé // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:22 PM

    @ Tinman

It sure is. I can still remember the first match I ever went to, walking up the stairs to the pitch in the Gallowgate end and hearing the crowd is something I will never forget and what made me an NUFC fan for life.

  • 276 Jackel001 // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:23 PM

John Carver thinks Anita is much better as a RB and I agree tbh hasn’t the build for middle of the park

  • 277 Tinman - Pardwho? // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:25 PM

Well I would be inclined to say that you need a bigger build to be a defender than a midfielder.

  • 278 Jackel001 // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:28 PM

For a right back? look at the likes of Evra, Rafael, Even Reberto Carlos haha Center backs need to be big but not so much LB RB but I see your point

  • 279 Jackel001 // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:29 PM

And Anita played CDM for Ajax most games he played and if you look at most CDM they are beasts i.e Tiote

  • 280 Tinman - Pardwho? // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:30 PM

I reckon I could name more short centre midfielders than short RB/LB…

I think its more the league which isnt suited to small players than the position

  • 281 Big Pappa Cissé // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:31 PM

    @ Tinman

For a winger I would go for Scott Sinclair.

  • 282 stuart no9 // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:31 PM

tinman@272 – ok fair point give cisse another spell next season , however, have a CF ready to step in if cisse dosnt take his chance. No way can we allow his under par performences to carry on .next season, but give him the benefit !.

  • 283 Jackel001 // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:34 PM

Yeah true, just think all good teams need muscle in the center of midfield especially CDM

  • 284 Tinman - Pardwho? // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:35 PM

Anita played most of his games at LB for Ajax because they were short of players in that position. Didnt really play that many for them in midfield untill shortly before he came to us

  • 285 Jackel001 // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:35 PM

    Very, Very good shout!

Just his f***ing whinging wench would probs have a say on it..

  • 286 Tinman - Pardwho? // Apr 22, 2013 at 11:37 PM

    Nice article on Vurnon.

Sinclair would be decent, but at what price? Wages etc. Plus hes either a greedy glory seeker or has a screw loose if he ever thought he was going to play for City 😉

    Im going to bed.
