There’s a story in the Daily Mail today that Newcastle are interested in Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, and will go head to head with Liverpool for the goalkeeper in the summer.
Rob Elliot – played very well this season
Steve Harper is leaving the club after twenty years service at the club, and he wants to continue playing and he could find himself moving to Birmingham in the summer, where Lee Clark will need a goalkeeper to replace Jack Butland.
The England and Great Britain goalkeeper for some reason chose Stoke City when the deal was arranged in January – and Jack was loaned back to Birmingham for the rest of the season.
It’s not the first time we’ve been linked with another goalkeeper – but with Steve leaving – the third choice goalkeeper is Jak Alnwick – and if Tim Krul and Rob Elliot are injured, then we really need an experienced goalkeeper to come in.
The Evening Chronicle had reported interest in McCarthy a day or so ago, but today are reporting that Newcastle have given up pursuit of another goalkeeper, because of Rob Elliot’s good form.
McCarthy came through the Reading Youth Academy and has been loaned out to several clubs to get first team experience, and the 23 year-old has been capped three times for the England U21 side. When he’s played for Reading this season he’s looked great .
Alex McCarthy – Reading goalkeeper
And he had a simply fantastic game recently against Liverpool, where he seemed unbeatable making about five world-class saves, so we’re not surprised Liverpool are interested in him.
There’s no doubt that Rob Elliot has shown he can do the job for Newcastle this season when Tim is injured, but don’t we need another experienced goalkeeper in the squad?
It depends on how fast 20 year-old Jak Alnwick is coming through, but the Chronicle also say he will be loaned out for next season – so we think Newcastle need to bring in another goalkeeper this summer.
What do you think?

It’s the same as mine man for man and should have been the team for the last 10 games.
Will it happen? I think we all know the answer to that as you haven’t found a place for Jonas and Tiote!!

Comment #8Alnwick needs to be promoted to 3rd choice, he should have been out on loan this season to gain experience, we do not need another keeper, McCarthy will cost a few bob, top keeper and very highly thought of, he would have been pushing for England this season if it wasn’t for his long term injury and I don’t think he will want to play second fiddle and compete with Elliot for the bench… if we are after a top keeper though I would have big Foster back in a heartbeat

Comment #14We’re supposed to be interested in Eric Bautheac the Nice midfielder.
25 year old with 7 goals in 31 Ligue 1 appearances. The telegraph though say he’s rejected us.

ichrisho…A meeting in Ibiza sounds good, nothing to do with it being cheaper for me 😉
Magpie6699….Is that some perspective? Couldn’t agree more.
Ian…Best not get in to my record of predicting, much like Lawro has QPR near the top, I’d have Newcastle near the top 🙂 Just hoping for 3 points, it will certainly calm the storm for now.

yes we lost
but look at the players we had on the pitch, almost our strongest side,
still should be fresh,
even reading beat us at home this season, they have only won 1 game away all season, and drew 2,,
i dont care what anyone says, under pardew we are a soft touch, with no style, we can not play football for 90 mins,
the guy panicks when we score and shuts up shop
its got to the point now where i dread scoring early, as i know it will be a tough game to watch,
i hate when he leaves it late, cos we end up not scoring
ppl think his tactics were spot on v benfica, this baffels me, we coasted for 70 mins, trying not to concede, then went for it with 20 mins to go, yes we played football for 20 mins, and we got nocked out, he should have gone for it from the start,
PARDEW OUT

Comment #21Catchy…I get what you’re saying and given the amount of times we’ve been left short of results it’s a hard one to defend. It’s not always just as simple as having the best players on the pitch if they don’t perform. Granted, tactics play a huge part too.
My point on the West Ham game, is that style aside, it appears we were more dominant from the stats (which could be misleading) but didn’t take our chances. That is the difference between winning and losing. Even with Pardews negative approach we could and should have won more games this season.
I also get that Pardew does have a tendency to protect small margin leads, however it’s not quite like many make out. Look at the West Brom game, when we scored after 10 minutes, did we go defensive? No, we looked for more goals and should have got some in that first half, which was 35 minutes after we scored.
Benfica is an odd one. Hard to say tactics were spot on as we didn’t progress or actually win on the night. However, on the basis that they only managed to get a goal once we went full out attack might indicate that if we had from the start, we may well have found ourselves out of the tie before HT and that wasn’t an option.

Comment #22Sadly Steve Harper will leave the club in the summer.
I’d like to think that by the Arsenal game we will be safe, and that Pardew will make a keeper substitution in the 89th minute to allow the crowd to salute him.
It really all comes down to results and if we need a win against Arsenal, Harper may just have to sit the match out. Still I’m sure that the crowd will show their appreciation of him both during and after the match.
Best of luck where ever you end up Steve.
