Cheick Tiote returns to the starting line-up against Liverpool today after recovering from injury, but Ben Arfa starts on the bench and Coloccini isn’t even in the match-day squad.
And a bit of a surprise in that Yoan Gouffran – our goalscorer last week – is benched to make way for Tiote, so it looks like it’s a 4-3-3 formation – with Sissoko, Cisse and Gutierrez the front three.
For Liverpool – Sturridge starts up front in place of the suspended Luis Suarez, and former Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique starts.
And Newcastle have been let off the hook as Wigan went 2-1 ahead of Tottenham after 49 minutes, but would you believe it, an Emerson Boyce own goal after 89 minutes made the score 2-2 – and that’s a massive two points lost by Wigan.
But it shows we have to save ourselves and cannot rely on other sides losing games.
A win will take Newcastle into 13th place and 8 points above the drop zone.
We wish!!!

Comment #47This time last season I’d have been wanting Wigan to win so we could pip Spurs to 4th place, this season I’m willing Spurs to win so we can maintain our PL status.
I really feel like crying, that’s how upset I am. I want him gone, I’m not even being hysterical, I want him gone.

Comment #49@29 because its not a 4-3-3. Even if he started Gouffran or HBA instead of Guti (as he shouldve) it would still have been a lopsided 4-5-1. There’s no justification in playing Tiote and Perch at the same time in a must-win home game. The man has lost it.

Comment #54the starting line up today, is worse than the line up we had when we got relegated. Ok might be a bit harsh there, but one thing is the same Jonas was awful at the end of that season, and he is now too!

Comment #59Pardew does realise we need to win today Ben Arfa 100% fit sits on the bench at newcastle any other team in the premier league would start him gouffran scores last week so confidence is high so he sits on the bench pardew is clueless he really is I am not saying sack him but at home wins needed we should attack teams not set out to not concede and with any luck nick a goal but hopefully not an early goal or he will tell everyone to drop back and defend it

Comment #63ESPN have us playing a flat back 4 with perch n tiote sitting.
Sissoko right, cabaye central and jonas left with cisse (oh was i offside again) up front.
Very disappointing selection when u consider the importance of the game.
Thankfulky it looks like the spuds have denied wigan all 3 points.
Oh well heres hoping we get a big performance but the manager has pushed the door open further in respect of being shot down if this match goes tits up before half time.

Comment #68Stoke on 40pts. Sunderland are in the ascendancy. Wigan are our best hope.
@colwell 53…you hit the nail on the head We have the second worst defensive record in the premiership This would have prompted a more sensible manager to place more emphasis on attacking play instead of constantly inviting the opposition to attack us with these negtative tactics. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results each time. I think this Pardew guy is clinically insane.

Comment #69We are just lucky Suarez isn’t playing we would be hammered, Pards really has lost the plot.
I hate too be down before a ball has been kicked but if 34 previous games are too go by we have no chance with the team he has put out..

Comment #70I don’t understand this line up at all! It can’t be that Gutierrez is going to play in a front 3 surely!? Gouffran if he ain’t injured should be playing simples. The same goes with HBA. WTF is Pardew thinking? honestly. And to start Tiote who has been nothing short of pathetic all season is ridiculous.
We had better play well because this line-up is so negative.
Pardew I was one of your supporters but line-ups like these when we should be going all out to win does really make me question if you’re the man for the job.

Comment #72Are you effin kidding me?
Tiote walks into the team again?!. Might as well play with 10 men, the lad has been useless for the majority of the season.
I miss the logic in starting that disaster.

This isn’t the most attacking line up, but were stuck with Pardew for at least this time. Give the lineup a chance.

Tiote hobbles straight back into the team, there’s the undroppable Jonas “Tortoiseman” Gutierrez as expected …
5-0 … Jonas hatrick then ?
