Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player In 0-0 Draw At West Ham?

5:10 pm, Saturday, May 4th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 96 Comments

west-ham-united-crest

Newcastle had a clean sheet and held West Ham top a 0-0 draw this afternoon but Wigan are starting their escape route out of being relegated when they beat West Brom 3-2 at the Hawthorns and cut the point gap to 3 points with a game in hand.

And Aston Villa beat Norwich to go two points clear of Newcastle, and Norwich are now level on points but have a one goal advantage on goal difference. If Wigan beat Swansea at home on Tuesday night and Sunderland don’t lose at home to Stoke City on Monday Newcastle will go 3rd bottom of the league for the first time this season, with just two games to.

The bottom line today is that the third bottom side gained 2 points on us – so it doesn’t look good, and it’s now a must win game at QPR next Saturday.

Let us know who you think Newcastle’s best player was against the Hammers this afternoon.

    mbiwa without a doubt

  • 3 Santon03 // May 4, 2013 at 5:12 PM

we will be extremely lucky if we don’t get relegated and probably doesn’t deserve it by the way we play.
I think i’m gonna get abused saying this, but it’s reality.

  • 4 stuart no9 // May 4, 2013 at 5:12 PM

ONE WORD – RELEGATED WE HAD NOTHING AT ALL. NO ATTACK – NOTHING . WORSE NUFC TEAM IN MY LIFETIME – OF 50 TEARS SUPPOPRTING THE TEAM . SHOCKING.

  • 5 tomellifred360 // May 4, 2013 at 5:12 PM

    Starting to get very nervous!
Three points now a must against QPR. Absolutely essential.

  • 6 catchy in norway // May 4, 2013 at 5:13 PM

    toonbrother

    i agree

but i gave mine to the keeper for that double save

but mbiwa was the best player over 90

  • 7 toonbrother // May 4, 2013 at 5:13 PM

could have been worse could have been 6-0

  • 8 Sazzer // May 4, 2013 at 5:13 PM

Norwich has tougher schedule than us on paper, but if WBA and City want us relegated then we are more or less screwed. Unless Sunderland goes empty handed.

  • 9 AMEOBI // May 4, 2013 at 5:13 PM

    Catchy

    Why change banner?

Thought was a good result today, think Norwich will be relegated. Qpr should be a point/3. Happy with that result, keep the faith

  • 13 Santon03 // May 4, 2013 at 5:15 PM

just looking at goal difference only we are 3rd from bottom tells the whole story.

  • 14 Dubaigeordie // May 4, 2013 at 5:16 PM

There was a few good moments in the game but then once again it turned to the normal panick football. Pardew needs to go this was his chance to show himself and change the formation change the style etc but yet again nothing new starting jonas who in my opinion runs round like a bloody headless chicken!!!

It is looking grim now wigan once again playing well at the end of the season villa have found their form, when are we going to find ours?

  • 15 davetoon // May 4, 2013 at 5:16 PM

not sure why everyone thinks its gonna be so easy to beat QPR away

To make thing worse that c##t from wigan scores there winner and has the cheek to say that the tackle on haidara has made him a stronger and better player

  • 22 kevymartins // May 4, 2013 at 5:18 PM

@Davetoon me to …After just watching that too…We will go to qpr and time waste all day for the point.

I don’t think anyone here think QPR will be easy, but it’s a must win game.

  • 24 Ginger // May 4, 2013 at 5:18 PM

A lot of you were saying that you’s would take a draw before the match, now that we have it isn’t enough?

You’s seem to forget that we should have been one nill up and that would have given us the momentum to get more. We controlled the game in the first half but West Ham came out fighting in the second. They’re an excellent team especially at home. Every team struggles against them because they’re so direct.

The reason we brought on Shola for Ben Arfa was because Ben Arfa was literally creating nothing and Shola could combat the height and heading ability of West Hams team. Same reason Gosling was brought on instead of Anita.

Don’t know what you’s were expecting. It’s West Ham we’re talking about here, we were always going to have a scruffy game of football no matter what. Just be grateful we actually got something out of the game.

  • 25 colwell // May 4, 2013 at 5:19 PM

Cabaye is he our MOST overated player? the guy is terrible in most games.

  • 26 Santon03 // May 4, 2013 at 5:19 PM

I’m hoping Ashley will say to pardew “enough”

  • 27 brogston // May 4, 2013 at 5:19 PM

Wigan won’t be the team to be relegated. Cant believe they will stay up once again, but I can see them doing their usual and win their remaining games. I think it is between us and Norwich to go down. Vital game for Norwich at home to Villa today and they went and bloody lost it, lets hope they do the same at home to WBA and then lose to Man Utd too.

We really must beat QPR next weekend or it’s curtains.

  • 28 Sir Braveheart // May 4, 2013 at 5:20 PM

Reality is its out of our hands. If the teams below us win their hame in hand and equal our results last 2 games its game over man.

Still think we’ll beat QPR and be safe. Inquest is needed in the summer into why we are where we are though.

  • 29 BandB // May 4, 2013 at 5:20 PM

    Kets

Stoke are the other team whose position is misleading. They are still in the mix.
I always thought Villa and Wigan would stage a fightback. I always thought Norwich and Stoke might slip back. We need to beat QPR.
I’m pleased so many of the boys are now turning their thoughts to Norwich.
Clever things, boys. They ignore what you say, and then say “Hey, I’ve had a REALLY clever thought.”
    Mine’s a babycham.

  • 30 lordjoesnow // May 4, 2013 at 5:20 PM

The draw was good for us, but other results today have got people getting nervous again. I think we should do well against QPR

  • 31 serotonin // May 4, 2013 at 5:21 PM

    Pardew OUT!!!!!!!!!!

  • 32 ArtyH // May 4, 2013 at 5:21 PM

Think Pardew will go for a draw in the last two games.

  • 33 matclarke4000 // May 4, 2013 at 5:22 PM

I actually thought we played pretty well today. Colo was excellent, as was Mbiwa, and even Tiote had a good game. West Ham grew into the game in the second half but we withstood the pressure well. Hopefully we can get a win against QPR, I think Norwich will probably lose both their games, so maybe a point will do it.

  • 34 Papiss9 // May 4, 2013 at 5:22 PM

wigan will lose home against villa and away at the emirates. I am not even sure they will beat swansea on tuesday.

  • 35 Guj NUFC // May 4, 2013 at 5:23 PM

colo looked cool as a cucumber today

  • 36 davis_toons // May 4, 2013 at 5:23 PM

Once Colo is back, the Defence is in place. No more pushing responsibilities and attack when we needed to, smart ball is pass through. Back line is guided.

The last time i saw a consistent Stylor was before he sign a new contract. He used to attack and bring the ball forward without fear but that young tylor have lost so much of that confidence.

    Same as Tiote.

  • 37 Joe Blog // May 4, 2013 at 5:24 PM

I see it as between us and Norwich, who gets the biggest hammering on the final day.

Yay, it’s going to be so much fun… :D

  • 38 kevymartins // May 4, 2013 at 5:24 PM

@Papiss9 Really? Did you watch them vs spuds last week?

Come the end of the season wigan just go all out for it every game they just play pure attacking football basically play with 3 cb’s and 7 strikers…While were doing the opposite and just defending well tring to.

  • 39 Santon03 // May 4, 2013 at 5:24 PM

40 points is not magic number yet, but goal difference is and we are 3rd from bottom for goal difference

  • 40 davetoon // May 4, 2013 at 5:24 PM

the last day is going to be uber painful

  • 41 Laurent Robert 32 // May 4, 2013 at 5:24 PM

You just know that if we went a goal ahead against QPR, he’d just defend it and defend it.

It’s like some evil presence is taking over your body and they’re doing stuff which you don’t want to do. Pardew is that demon with his negative outlook.

  • 42 Guj NUFC // May 4, 2013 at 5:24 PM

Also, Villa got to 40 points before us is a horrible feeling. I had them as team to finish bottom before christmas.

  • 43 matclarke4000 // May 4, 2013 at 5:24 PM

Braveheart – not true. If we win our last two games, we will finish above either Villa or Wigan, who play each other on the last day.

  • 44 Toonfan93 // May 4, 2013 at 5:25 PM

Cisse only had 1 opportunity today and scored wasnt his fault the linesman has vision problems.

  • 45 Santon03 // May 4, 2013 at 5:25 PM

if wigan win 2 games then they are on 41.

  • 46 davis_toons // May 4, 2013 at 5:26 PM

Under former KK erra Stylor could have already in the England setup. I though he used to watch that kind of football.

But too many cook spoilt the soup.

  • 47 brogston // May 4, 2013 at 5:26 PM

Are the nerves going to kick in? Look at Reading thumping Fulham, granted both teams have nothing to play for. But will we beat QPR? Can we come back if we go a goal down? I f****n hate this.

  • 48 JP...from The Rock // May 4, 2013 at 5:27 PM

The stats of the game are quite surprising and doesn’t paint us so badly. But in reality we need to up our game. Mainly our game-plan! Subbing HBA for Strolla Ameobi was a shocking decision again. Those are the sort of things that make me want Pardew to be replaced with a more technical coach, preferably foreign with a knowledge of our league. I was one of his supporters but he has shown his true colours this season under intense pressure. Injuries have ruined our season but, we can do better than his negative style of thinking during matches. We should be going all out for a win nearly every game. In this game I feel we missed a great chance to be safe, though a point is not a disaster.

  • 49 woolerbill // May 4, 2013 at 5:27 PM

Par dew is correct, it,s in our hands. All the teams below us to fight and pick up wins, what do we get a defensive point. Pardew isn’t god so we are doomed.

  • 50 naptoon // May 4, 2013 at 5:28 PM

i think everyone would have taken a point today only other results going against us have made what was adecent result look bad. we will win at qpr i thought the other day we would pick up 4 more points thats the first norwich or sunderland to go down theyll be just as nervous down the road. mom any one of keeper and 3 of back 4 … not simmo. hwtl

  • 51 ArtyH // May 4, 2013 at 5:28 PM

How many real goals has Cisse scored that have been disallowed but have rightfully been goals. He should be up there with the golden boot candidates.

  • 52 Eddie // May 4, 2013 at 5:28 PM

I voted for Cabaye – thought not having the armband did him the power of good.
At least Rene Girard is prepared to manage in the Championship.

  • 53 davetoon // May 4, 2013 at 5:28 PM

all I can think of is Pardew took off HBA to rest him for next week and to make sure he didnt pick up an injury

  • 54 manxpie // May 4, 2013 at 5:29 PM

jesus why’s cisse getting shite now he scored today and thats his about 5th goal wiped out coz of referees decisions if any1 deserves shite is the linesman AGAIN!!!

  • 55 lesh // May 4, 2013 at 5:29 PM

ArtyH… Pardew to go for a point in each of our last two games? Probably and wigan’ll be going for three in each of theirs!

    Marvellous innit

  • 56 Santon03 // May 4, 2013 at 5:29 PM

11th position is on 40 points, 17th is on 35 points, from 11 to 17 they are all in relegation battle, we have the worst goal difference among 8 teams. if pardew thinks goal difference is not important then he has to win both games and hope teams below us slip.

  • 57 daztoon-anti christ is that the time // May 4, 2013 at 5:30 PM

Why does he persist with Strolla he offers nothing everytime he comes on and then Gosling the man is a joke.It will be we were unlucky not to win that from Pardew. Watching paint dry is more enjoyable

  • 58 mattnufc // May 4, 2013 at 5:30 PM

    @woolerbill
It is not in our hands. If Wigan win and Sunderland draw their games in hands we are in the relegation zone.

  • 59 jordijohnty // May 4, 2013 at 5:30 PM

i did the bbc predictor, drawing our last 2 games – we go down!

  • 60 matclarke4000 // May 4, 2013 at 5:30 PM

JP – I would imagine Ben Arfa came off for two reasons. One, as mentioned above, is his height. The second – he clearly is not fully fit. Pardew would have started him last week if he was, and played him for longer today. Better not risk him, we need him to potentially make the difference in one of the last two games. I don’t like Pardew either but I think some people will blame him if the weather is bad on their holidays

  • 61 outsidethebox // May 4, 2013 at 5:30 PM

any team from 11th down can finish 3rd bttm ..that includes stoke and fulham …toon have to beat either qpr away or arsenal at home …fulham have to get point against liverpool at home or swansea away ..lots of permutations 40 pts may not guarantee survival this season

  • 62 AndyMac // May 4, 2013 at 5:30 PM

  • 68 Dubaigeordie // May 4, 2013 at 5:31 PM

Yeh cisse scored his only opportunity and we got cheated out of it but we cant just say if we scored we would of had the momentum to go on and get more ? surely if you nearly score and your toes are in the water of relegation that is more then enough momentum to go forward and win games ? all it is, is excuse after excuse and no doubt Pardew will come out with some huge excuse saying we played quality football and looked dangerous on the attack and were very unucky we need to realise if we dont start taking chances we are not going to win games

    kevymartins

Wigan has won just one game in the last 5 games, is not like they’re in very good form.

Looking at the fixturelist there are a lot of difficult games left for the teams around us.

    fulham liverpool
    swansea – fulham

    norwich – wba
    city – norwich

    wigan wba
    wigan villa
    arsenal wigan

    sunderland stoke
    sunderland southampton
    tottenham sunderland

    villa chelsea
    wigan villa

everything can happen. If we win both games we are safe, but the other results might mean we dont have to get more than 3 points more. never know.

    __________BenArfa___Cisse____________

  • 83 davis_toons // May 4, 2013 at 5:38 PM

To win QPR is to Attack and Not Defence. Their Defence is too weak. Esp with Hill in there.

  • 84 Ketsbaia9 // May 4, 2013 at 5:39 PM

Cabaye is useless. We need Sylvain Marveuax back asap.

  • 85 davis_toons // May 4, 2013 at 5:39 PM

One of the worst defender in the PL. Captain Hill from QPR.

  • 86 Ketsbaia9 // May 4, 2013 at 5:40 PM

Marveaux and Cisse are probably the only players who can save us. Maybe Ben Arfa as well is he’s on form. We’ve just not got enough going forward. Cabaye has to be dropped.

  • 87 Assam Toon // May 4, 2013 at 5:41 PM

Wba wont lose again I hope, this time against norwich. they suddenly popped up into the mix now. Its baffling that Wigan will escape again. So if we win next match we shud be safe. Norwich will probably lose against wba and definitely against city. Wigan will overtake us, might beat both swans and villans. They are so confident they might beat arsenal. We, At best, will be 17th this season. And as for Pardew…..nevermind.

  • 88 JP...from The Rock // May 4, 2013 at 5:43 PM

matclarke4000 – That’s again negative thinking by Pardew I am afraid. If it were for his height okay I guess, still more negative than leaving him on as a speedy outlet that can create something out of nothing. It was surely one goal clinches all three points. Sadly he prefered the draw.

About HBA not being fit, the player came out last week saying he was fit only to be on the bench. Therefore he has been rested even more. Then while on todays game he was man of the match along with Elliott and M’biwa. HBA never stopped running and looked sharp. He nearly scored once or twice. What did ameobi do apart from his scuffed shot? I think he only cleared one header and handed over possession with most of his few touches.

HBA is a match winner and we need him on the pitch! Fit or not, even though he looks really sharp. We can’t afford to rest him in these games, not anymore!

  • 89 Papiss9 // May 4, 2013 at 5:43 PM

QPR have lost the 4 of the last 6 games and 2 draws. Arsenal is gonne beat them today and We will beat them next week. I thought 4 points from West ham and QPR would be enough.

  • 90 mot7 // May 4, 2013 at 5:45 PM

    AMEOBI
if cisse isnt scoring he offers nothing to the team he cant create he is constantly offside his hold up and build up play is shite .
And yes i know we dont play to his strengths but he makes the whole team nervous by not finishing the chances he does get .

  • 91 davis_toons // May 4, 2013 at 5:45 PM

dave. Goal-line technology could have got us a goal. But properly we will defend on that goal. But is 2 points robbed.

  • 92 matclarke4000 // May 4, 2013 at 5:49 PM

JP- I don’t think he does look that sharp. Had a few good runs today. But don’t forget he lost the ball for the crucial 3rd goal last week. Today he had possession in the West Ham box and ended up running with it back to the halfway line! Obviously I would prefer him on the pitch but its clearly his hamstring they are worried about. Pardew might be a bad manager but he’s not completely stupid, he would leave Ben Arfa on if he could

  • 93 davis_toons // May 4, 2013 at 5:52 PM

I think pardew wanted height in the team for defence. and a target man to hold the ball upfront which Shola did fairly well. tbf.

  • 94 Munster Mag // May 4, 2013 at 5:54 PM

Why doi u think Norwish will lose two games against teams with nothing to play for???????

  • 95 JP...from The Rock // May 4, 2013 at 5:54 PM

matclarke4000 – That’s the thing I think he could leave HBA on. That moment when HBA was forced to run back to his halfway line was because his teammates did not offer him any help. He still didn’t lose the ball then and shows his worth to the team every time. I think Pardew got nervous seeing that West Ham were being a bit more direct and went for the boring and negative, Shola on sub to gain only a point and not go for all three that would save us.
