Villa Lose – So Win Tomorrow And Newcastle Safe – Official

2:45 pm, Saturday, May 11th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 192 Comments

After what was a dramatic game at Villa Park this afternoon, Chelsea came back from one goal down and 10 men, after Ramires was sent off in the first half, to win the game 2-1 in dramatic style.

bentake scores chelsea

Bentake scores after just 14 minutes to put Villa 1-0 up

And is was that guy who is supposed to be passed it – Frank Lampard (yeah right) – who scored both Chelsea’s second half goals, and the winner came with just two minutes to go after Bentake had been sent off after 57 minutes for a second yellow card for a high tackle on Terry.

Frank Lampard now has scored 203 goals for Chelsea – a club record.

And Aston Villa’s top goalscorer Bentake will now miss Villa’s last game at home to Wigan a week tomorrow – good news for Wigan.

Ramirez was sent off just before half time for picking up his second yellow card for a foul on Agbonlahor, and it’s really hard to make this stuff up, after Villa looked in a great position to secure their season leading 1-0 up at the half, and against 10 men.

The defeat means Aston Villa are still two points ahead of Newcastle and a win tomorrow at QPR will take us above the Villains – and the win for Chelsea has secured their Champions League qualification for next season.

The results are going Newcastle’s way and as we reported on Thursday there are two steps to heaven (aka The Premier League) for Newcastle – now there’s only one step.

A win at QPR tomorrow and we are safe.

    Sorry, what?

What on earth are you talking about Zidane for…?

  • 2 davis_toons // May 11, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Ronaldo under Pardew will become Mr Nobody.

He hate cocky players, players with flair to display,

Pardew: “Hey Cristiano, can’t you just get back there and defence for the good of the team?”

    CR7: …but I’m born to attack…i defence like a clown.

Pardew: Stop all you nonsense excuse, now get back there and polish up your defensive skill. Before i drop you from playing and …(show off your skill)

If we had Messi pardew would bench him because he hasn’t hgot the physicality.

Entertaining football is getting the ball down on the deck, passing it around, pressing hard for the ball and ultimately scoring goals. Just so you know, we scored the least amount of goals out of the top 6 with 56 last season, and conceded more goals than any other side in the top 10 other than Fulham with 51, where they also conceded 51.

Our style of play was not fluid, it not based on scoring goals, it was not even based on solid defending. It was the same style that we have seen this year, sit back, try and nick a goal and hope the other team doesn’t score.

Last season it worked, this season it most certainly hasn’t.

Did I enjoy seeing the club I love finish 5th? Of course I did, did I even purport to being “entertained”? I found winning to be very entertaining.

But your statement that we were the “Entertainers” of last season is preposterous, even Wigan played more entertaining football than we did, and they showed that when they drubbed us 4-0 at their gaff.

Just so you know, the true “Entertainers” scored 73 goals in the 1996/97 season, and conceded 40, they dominated teams with pass and move football, and contrary to popular belief, they could defend well too.

Pardew never has, and never will get us playing “entertaining” football.

  • 5 davis_toons // May 11, 2013 at 3:01 PM

Pardew was saying Gouffran is a no.10

“If Gouffran is a no.10. then WHO is Zidane?”

  • 6 ToonDownSouth // May 11, 2013 at 3:07 PM

    davis

You’re aware that players play different styles though… Just because someone doesn’t play like Zidane doesn’t mean that they can’t be a number ten.

Traditionally #9’s are great big lumps who stand up front and muscle their way about, winning headers and holding the ball up. Does that mean Torres isn’t a number 9? Or Cisse?

Like I said before – there’s plenty of reasons to complain, but it’s sad that people are inventing new ones which don’t even make any sense.

  • 7 toonarmydownsouth // May 11, 2013 at 3:07 PM

That makes no sense at all, since when did he say he was like zidane?
Your just picking apart statements for the sake of it

  • 8 santonthenewmaldini // May 11, 2013 at 3:10 PM

So if Gouffran a no 10 why is he playing wide left?

Can you not see how much nonsense that is?,if you have your creative players missing, your team is not going to create much chances, and if you don’t score the few chances you create your alway’s going to be defending, take the West Brom game,if we had taken our chances we could have been 2 or 3 nil up at half time, then when they came out a more motivated team in the second half we could have just tried to catch them on the break and played a bit more confident football,we didn’t take our chances and were left to defend a 1 goal lead.
    Last one
“But your statement that we were the “Entertainers” of last season is preposterous, even Wigan played more entertaining football than we did, and they showed that when they drubbed us 4-0 at their gaff.
This is not my statement,i thought they played good football last season,it was the pundits and journo’s who called us that. But hey,What do ex-international footballers know about good football?

what a cracking game today, i thought Villa were playing like a top team, lucky for us they didn’t win, now tomorrow we need a win end off losing or draw is unacceptable

  • 14 Toon Tang // May 11, 2013 at 3:20 PM

thank fcuk for frankie eh. does this mean benteke is out of their next game. villa are royally screwed without him.

  • 15 santonthenewmaldini // May 11, 2013 at 3:22 PM

Right thought about this for a second so assuming Gouffran is a no 10 why do we not play this 2moro :
    4411

    Elliot
    Simmo
    Colo
    Taylor
    Mbiwa
    Jonas DM
    Cabaye CM
    Gouffran No 10
    Debuchy RWF
    Cisse
    Arfa LWF

That way we have a solid back 5 and the other boys can do the damage i am tired of watching this cutting inside pish Arfa has set up the majority of his goals for us on the left hand side he just does more damage cause he can just beat a man

Debuchy is much better at attacking and with Simmo and Mbiwa at full back there is plenty of protection

Its obvious Pardew does not like Anita so I would rather Jonas play than Tiote as he offers defensive cover as Tiote just goes AWOL from defense these days

    Mojo

You’ve failed to comprehend that my entire post was in reference to last season. Your reference to the West Brom game this season is irrelevant.

How do you explain our inability to score more goals last season despite having our creative players available and a red hot striker for each half of the season?

How do you explain the fact that we conceded more goals than 8 other sides in the top ten despite having a settled back 5 for practically the entire season?

And finally, you’re hiding behind the journos and press so you don’t have to feel the flack of agreeing that we were the “Entertainers” of last season. Also I would think that listening to Alan Shearer on MOTD on a Saturday night shows exactly what some ex-international footballers know about good football.

Please try to stick to the actual topic of conversation, if I reference last season, don’t use this season to counter it, I am aware of other factors being in play for our dismal season last season, I am pointing out that the systemic flaws that exist this season were actually still in play last season, despite finishing 5th.

You did claim that “you don’t finish 5th by playing negative defensive football”, and I think I more than succeeded in proving just that.

The latest ramblings of a deluded man

Alan Pardew says he doesn’t fear for his job at Newcastle United, and that he prides himself on tactical knowledge.
Alan Pardew: “I never fear for my job.
“But I don’t think my contract is cast-iron either.
“I’m not going to say ‘that doesn’t matter – I’ve got a long contract’.
“I’m hurting about performances, I’m hurting about the way we’ve played.
“I’m hurting about results – we should have had better results.
“Some of the performances have been good. But we haven’t got the points.
“For somebody who prides himself on tactical knowledge and the way I assemble teams, that’s been a major disappointment.
“In terms of my confidence, and worrying – no. The only worry I’ve got is getting this team safe this year. After the year we’ve had, I’ll treat that as a minor – a little – success.”

Now read that amazing statement again.

“For somebody who prides himself on tactical knowledge and the way I assemble teams, that’s been a major disappointment.

Sorry Alan, but it’s your tactical naivety and lack of knowledge of how to assemble a team that will see you sacked at NUFC.

If your post was based entirely on last season why keep mentioning this season?.We don’t need to talk about last season,we are having problems this season. You said”we sit back, try and nick a goal and hope the other team doesn’t score”,i gave the perfect reference in the West Brom game on that is what happens when you don’t take chances in games.

“How do you explain our inability to score more goals last season despite having our creative players available and a red hot striker for each half of the season?”
That is a perfect example of irrelevance

“How do you explain the fact that we conceded more goals than 8 other sides in the top ten despite having a settled back 5 for practically the entire season?

I can see you’re struggling so let me make this clear.

Sitting back and trying to nick a goal is not good football. Sitting back and inviting opponents on to you is not good football. Letting mediocre teams have the ball and pass around us is not good football. Allowing your back 4 to retreat and play football inside your penalty box is not good football. Playing long balls is not good football.

All of which we have done this season, and last season.

Pressing the ball high, getting the ball down and passing it around, and showing attacking intent are all attributes of good football.

If you really think this is the sort of football we played last season or in any part of this season then I am afraid we have nothing more to discuss.

As for Big Al, great striker but his knowledge of football is terrible.

  • 29 JackButler // May 11, 2013 at 3:50 PM

@daz – Thats why I like that quote by Einstein because it sum’s up Pardew’s approach to this season. He has tried and tried the same thing week after week when everyone else could see that it simply wasn’t working and yet he expected it to bring us results 😀

I’ve said before that it would be frightening what Kevin Keegan or Sir Bobby could do with this squad while it’s sickening that it’s being wasted on a chancer like Pardew

  • 62 toonluvva // May 11, 2013 at 4:22 PM

I’m worried that despite all these chances to stay up that are being serve up by other teams losing their games will be spurned by Pardew.

We MUST beat QPR tomorrow, a draw might just get us out of trouble, but don’t bank on it.

Sadly I just believe that Pardew has got the confidence of the dressing room at the moment, and his tactics might just lead to a defeat.

Our recent form has been so bad that no one really thinks that we can get 3 points at an already relegated side.

I expect that our reason for being beaten will be down to grass being too green, or the players were tired from their journey to Loftus Road.

Hopefully Wigan will lose their last 2 matches against Arsenal & Villa and we survive (just) in 17th place.

It’s going to be an anxious wait for the final whistle in 8 days time, and we will be reliant on Wigan failing to win.

Ruddy is a big boy,he can stick up for himself,he doesn’t need his ass cleaning at this minute, and when he does,he’ll probably use toilet paper.

Who’s Lauren? The former Arsenal player?

I’m Laurent Robert 32 the goalscoring winger and assists extraordinaire.

You maybe don’t know what they are are if you’re advocating Pardew’s defend at all costs approach.

Ruddy was bang on, I was merely confirming his point as being the same as my own.

You can take whatever view you like on Pardew, I’m just putting forward my opinions. Don’t need wiping backside comments.

I just do not think Pardew gets it. Most of us want him to resign but he thinks he is very very unlucky and that he is a tactical genius while he was just lucky last season with clubs like arsenal and chelsea having trouble. Pardew is also not a genius, but a moron who should be sacked right now or right after the season

  • 85 ToonMauritius // May 11, 2013 at 4:45 PM

    Hi Lads
I’ve been quite stress lately due to the team
Hope Pardew move out soon, he can give you heart attack with his saturated tactics. Benitez will be ok but defensive minded football. Lets hope we get some British talents in the team like Shawcross, T.Ince , M/Philips & the lad from Derby County, Winyama/Capoue if Cabaye leave. Hooper & W. Bony as well.
OUT – Shola, Obertan, Wiliamson, Gosling, Simpson

    Mojo

No worries lad, whether Pardew stays or goes I will always back the lads 100%, as I am sure you will too.

I just think he’s been found out as a poor manager, others are more patient and willing to give him more time. There is merit to all sides of the argument, and ultimately we’re powerless to effect the decision that is taken, but this summer will most definitely be interesting.

  • 99 Laurent Robert 32 // May 11, 2013 at 4:57 PM

Mojo, I really just want to see the club be the best it can, and with the set up as it is, I cannot see it.

If Pardew had a CV of Benitez’s I may have a different opinion as there has been history of success to show improvement could be made.

Alan doesn’t have that decorated history and doesn’t change glaring errors each week, so if he’s not making improvements week to week, how can I be wanting him to stay next season as well?

Yes, last year we scored some great individual goals, I loved them, like any fan, we even defended very well at times, but trying to hang on and defend for that long, just isn’t a philosophy which will work in the long run, nor do I want to see it, or pay my money for season ticket for it which I have done for 20 years, or when I go to away games.

There’s no surprise that goals have been hard to come by, because he doesn’t emphasise attack, yet his need to sit back has cost us 44 second half goals compared to 22 in the first half of games. If that doesn’t speak volumes for his non-productive negativity then I don’t know what does…

As I gave an analogy before, a professional player in basketball can score a half court buzzer shot once in a few dozen attempts, but then will go back to missing. You can say he had great technique when he scored, that his arm reflexes were superb, the fact is that it doesn’t happen every time.

Pardew’s 5th place is that half court shot that went in. Nowhere on his CV has he shown any success to meet the expectations of this club and the players which Carr has brought in.

I stop just short of personally insulting people, I may come across as barbed and sharp, and maybe even condescending (I try not to) but I don’t like insulting people either, that may be hard to believe but it’s the truth.

Well, how we approach the game will determine how we do in my opinion. If we start with a high tempo and press high and get in their faces then I think we will win and win easily.

We’re low on confidence and I can see us approaching it the same way as we approach the West Ham game, trying to keep it tight and looking not to concede, which I think is the wrong view as far as I am concerned.

I will always back us to win, but I’ve a bad feeling about this game, I too will be furious if we lose, a point I think will be enough in the grand scheme of things

I sincerely feel pardew is the right manager to take this club forward. Sacking him isnt an option but its another way to destabilise the clubs ambition. Lets all forgive the manager and give him a second chance to prove his worth.

  • 123 davis_toons // May 11, 2013 at 5:18 PM

I think the problem here is this:

We don’t understand the perception of a no.10 in Pardew’s view. Do you understands his curticial of a no.10?

Why this particular manager view this particular player as a no.10 role.

What is the manager perception of a no.10 role?

For me, Gouffran is no where close to a no.10. (I even think that Obertan have much more qualities to be a no.10)
I see him as a forward, when he played against us he was so dangerous playing center forward. If you catch that game.

Like i said, to me, a no.10 got to be someone who can dictate play either bring the rest of the group to attack / created chances out of nothing / stabilise play / thread through balls.
He doesn’t even have to score goals.

Juan Roman Riquelme (one of my fav during his best)
    Van der Vaart
    Frank Lampard

Mojo, the problem is, he gets the following week to rectify it, but the same errors are there. If he was really trying to get back to basic I’d be more forgiving, but he doesn’t help himself.

Even supporting him next season… I don’t know how to put faith in him any more, when he’s never changed the way he’s played at each of the clubs he’s been at, so why should he play next season.

If we signed 4 top players next season, we probably would be a few places higher, but is nowhere near the potential of how those should be playing collectively.

We have benny who is a very creative player

Gouff showed in his first few games he can be creative, me make’s some very intelligent runs and think if we played him as a CF our attack would look much more ruthless

Sissoko also has showed he can create space and find that killer ball but we need to use him in a more natural position

Debuchy, santon, mbiwa even anita have all showed they can make thing’s happen we just need to find a system to utilize there ability and one a system which would install some consitency

What’s not the point? He can’t motivate a team unless they are almost ready to drop? Seems a niche skill really

Was tongue in cheek tbh but I do think he is over rated tbh plus he loves Whelan so he won’t show up for us thus why not point out his failings

He looks a good player but I would touch that dirty scouse s**tbag with a barge poll horrible little boy and wouldn’t want him in our dressing room…plus Kone is probably too old for our transfer strategy

    http://www.themag.co.uk/the-mag-articles/new-study-ranks-alan-pardew-as-second-best-manager-in-europe-last-season/

Alan pardew was named the 2nd best manager last season and you all want the messiah out???? Very unfair if you consider the injury and lack of summer signings forcing him to use ugly tactics. Smh

  • 164 davis_toons // May 11, 2013 at 5:48 PM

I didn’t want pardew to be sack. Unless convincingly prove that it is fully his fault.

To me, the late investment from the Owner was too much to take for pardew and his team whom are work in progress. I personally can’t accept that.

When the required mens did not arrive and the football matches still have to continue playing and compete at top level. Its not an easy job.

I give Pardew a timeline: Starting 2nd half of next season. Thats when new players have at least got a season in Newcastle kit. Thats when improvement either 1 of two main things need to happen.

    1. Win games, be it ugly or whatever or (sad to be said, this method will not last, players will only be motivated so much after your screaming, it is proper football that they enjoy playing that will last)

    2. Play proper football and watch our team creating chances after chances. Even to the extent of losing games (But no worries good attacking football will win games, when chances is created, its just a matter of time)

  • 165 Big Pappa Cissé // May 11, 2013 at 5:50 PM

I dont think Martinez is anything special either but is he better than Pardew IMO yes. Not to mention Wigan have the 4th lowest wage bill in the league. And as for relegation survival, how many times has he had a team relegated from the PL ? .

He wouldn’t be my ideal choice as I would go for Benitez but we know Ashley runs a tight ship wages and transfer funds wise, so I think he is a more realistic target.

So ud be happy fighting relegation every season as long as we don’t actually go down? As for wage bill fair enough it’s tough but he should surely of had at least one season of over achieving if he was a good manager? He’s always in the trap door imo he get out of players what they offer he never gets more than that

Plus Whelan wouldn’t agree a fee for him with Ashley imo

  • 171 matias // May 11, 2013 at 5:55 PM

Let`s hope for a 120 minute run out for Wigan. And maybe demoralizing defeat in the end.

We should sign McManaman for next season.

  • 172 davis_toons // May 11, 2013 at 5:55 PM

This is a proper football manager.

Mourinho also responded to Pepe, who had accused his coach of showing a lack of respect to Casillas, the captain, last Friday, describing his words as “inappropriate” and for the first time gave a footballing explanation was to why he plays Diego López ahead of Casillas.

The Portuguese called the defender “frustrated” and noted sharply: “Pepe’s problem is easy to analyse: it’s called Varane. It’s hard to be a 31 year old and be steamrollered by a 19-year-old kid [Raphaël Varane] but that’s the law of life. There must be very few people who don’t think the future is [Sergio] Ramos and Varane.

“I have to have the legitimacy to decide: I am a football manager. I prefer López to Casillas. I like a goalkeeper who is good with his feet, who comes for crosses, who dominates his area. You all question me and I accept that but you have to accept that I am the coach, it is simple.”

No one said he gets teams relegated but he’s been in a relegation battle since he took over at wigan
How have he evolved them in that time? He hasn’t at all, alot of people complain that under pardew we won’t go anywhere, well wigan haven’t gone anywhere under martinez

  • 177 ganiyu // May 11, 2013 at 6:01 PM

    @ toonarmydownsouth

Ben arfa and other players you mentioned are entertainers. I can barely blame pardew for his abysmal (poor) tactics due to lack of real creative players at his disposal.

I also feel ben arfa should be sold asap to garner(get) some transfer money for a more readily fit winger.

Youre way off the mark. Just because he is facing relegation with Wigan doesn’t mean he would do the same with a better Premier League Club let alone the talent we have. All I am saying is I think he could do better with our squad than Pardew. Why is that so hard to comprehend ?.

  • 179 WWYCD // May 11, 2013 at 6:01 PM

Sod it if Mancini is to be sacked by City get him in at NUFC

  • 180 Big Pappa Cissé // May 11, 2013 at 6:05 PM

    @ tads

So when was the last time Whelan dropped 20 million in a transfer window buying the likes of M’Biwa & Sissoko then ? . Not to mention we already had HBA,Cabaye,Cisse and more. Some of you are acting like Wigan buy great players or can attract them for that matter when one of their best ever transfers has been Kone.

U asked what could Martinez do with our squad and going off his CV I gave u an answer personally I think Pards could do better with his squad than he has done this season.

And it’s not hard to comprehend I just offered u a different opinion, what’s wrong with that?

  • 182 jimiley // May 11, 2013 at 6:06 PM

I hope my beloved Newcastle don’t get relegated. They might never recover from this fall again.

Even if, that will take another 4 four years to regroup. Not many fans can say they have that many four years to wait. …guttered.

The easily way out is to get a richer owner. ..dreaming.

What does transfer fee’s matter? There are plenty of squads in the league who dont spend massivley and do better than wigan
As i said how have wigan progressed at all under martinez? They haven’t they have stalled and are stuck in a repetative rut

  • 190 matias // May 11, 2013 at 6:14 PM

    to Newcastle Brown Alien.

McManaman would be a good buy.

He made one horror tackle and it happened to be against NUFC. But I don`t see him as a dirty player in general. He has plenty to offer.
