Wigan Win FA Cup For First Time – Beat Manchester City 1-0

7:28 pm, Saturday, May 11th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 67 Comments

Wigan Athletic have amazingly won their first FA Cup ever,  by defeating Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley, with the winning goal being scored by substitute Ben Watson with a great header from a corner in added time.

bven watson after scoring

Ben Watson - after scoring winning goal in added time

And just before the goal City’s Pablo Zabaleta had been sent off for his second yellow card – and that could have given Wigan that extra drive to win the game, before it went to extra time.

And Wigan were as good or better in this game than their opposition-who have spent over £850M on their players in the last five years.

And it’s just amazing how Roberto Martinez gets the best out of his players – who individually are fairly ordinary, and not one of their players could get in the Manchester City side.

But this is a team game – and it’s a huge shock.

Newcastle had better ensure we get the win tomorrow so we are safe – because we wouldn’t put it past Wigan to save themselves again with two wins or four points out of their last two games at Arsenal and Aston Villa.

We must get ourselves to safety tomorrow with a win at QPR,  and not let it get down to the last game – where – as we found out four years ago – anything can happen.

But congratulations to Wigan Athletic for a fantastic FA Cup final win.

And a message to Alan Pardew – please get the win tomorrow to save our season, our Premier League status – and our nerves.

Comments welcome.

  • 5 KRadiation // May 11, 2013 at 7:35 PM

So what are the chances I’d get Lynched for suggesting we should sign mcmanaman in the summer if they go down and we stay up. He looked electric today with a superb burst of pace and ability to turn defenders inside and out.

  • 6 daztoon-anti christ is that the time // May 11, 2013 at 7:35 PM

Thats how bad it is under Pardew that we all hope we can beat the bottom of the league with a host of internationals to stay up.If that doesn`t tell anyone how bad it has been under Pardew this season nothing will

    hmmmmm

where does this leave all you who dont want martinez as our manager,,

he just won the fa cup with a team that cast half of aguero’s value

and was the better team for the whole game,

not a lucky win,, a deserved win

    well done wiggan

  • 8 Korean Magpie // May 11, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Wigan will now go on a roll and are likely to get almost maximum points from their remaining games.. wish we had a manager that is at least half as good as Martinez..Pardew sure isn’t

  • 9 Cpt. Dreamboat // May 11, 2013 at 7:37 PM

What competitions does this put in wigan for next year? can’t be champions league, can it?

I honestly just think Mcmanaman is riding a crest of a wave, looks to have no outstanding attributes aside from selling a mean dummy, something defenders wise up to after a couple of seasons, ask Damien Duff. He isn’t quick or anything. Defenders are just scared of him at the moment as they’re exposed to the same fanfare as we are. Once it all settles down, he’ll be about as good as Mathew Etherington.

That sounded like a Ketsbaia9 post

  • 15 Ketsbaia9 // May 11, 2013 at 7:41 PM

Wigan have to stay up now. They can beat Arsenal away. I still hope Villa will go down. We need a player like Mcmanaman. Sign him up. Espinoza, Scharner and Boyce were all immense today.

  • 16 yo-yo // May 11, 2013 at 7:41 PM

    We need to win tomorrow

    End of story

  • 17 Smallietoon123 // May 11, 2013 at 7:41 PM

I think we’ll beat QPR, wigan will get a point of arsenal and then beat aston villa ( with out benteke ) and then Norwich will loose both games then in the summer carrol and PEA in collochinni and pardew out and then we can build from there !!

Imo the players are going to have a late night tonight, they arnt going to go home have a cup of hot choco and have an early night lol

Would have been better with extra time but they are still playing in 3 days time.It might feel the seasons over for them now.

  • 20 AndyNUFC // May 11, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Still hate Wigan, still hate Martinez, still hate Whelan, will always hate Mcmanaman.

City were poor, no congratulations from me. I would never take a cup and Europe over staying in the league – I will gladly see them celebrate today, to then stay in the championship for a few years.

  • 21 croftus5678 // May 11, 2013 at 7:45 PM

no offence intended but martinez has been at wigan for some seasons now and is still in the relegation zone !
and we did get to the 1/4 of europe so frustration at pardew aside i dont think theres much between martinez and pards tbh.

  • 22 Big Pappa Cissé // May 11, 2013 at 7:46 PM

Even if Wigan pick up maximum points in their last two games a win for us against QPR and we are safe no matter what.

  • 23 9 // May 11, 2013 at 7:50 PM

Congratulattions to Wigan, by far the better side throughout.
Tomorrow we need to play with the same determination – QPR can be guaranteed not to care less- and then we’re safe.
    We hope!

  • 24 colwell // May 11, 2013 at 7:50 PM

Yeah we only need a win tomorrow and we know how reliable we are for that.

  • 25 Jackel001 // May 11, 2013 at 7:51 PM

  • 26 colwell // May 11, 2013 at 7:53 PM

Wigan and villa have realised they are in a dogfight and are trying their best too get out of it. Us on the other hand play like we have finished mid table with nothing too play for. We also look so unfit compared to other teams.

  • 27 Dennis Twice // May 11, 2013 at 7:54 PM

  • 29 nick_9 // May 11, 2013 at 7:58 PM

BPC – Can you see us winning against QPR though? I honestly cannot, we have no goals in the team and do not travel well. I personally believe there is more chance of Wigan losing at Arsenal and us drawing at QPR. We’re safe that way but the season was a write off long ago, now its damage limitation. Its beggars belief swansea and wigan can win cups this season and our wait goes on.

  • 30 Ketsbaia9 // May 11, 2013 at 7:58 PM

Who mentioned my name? I’m normally right in what I’m saying. Wigan are a decent team and deservedly won the f.a. cup today. Scharner and Mcmanaman were immense. Alcaraz would be a good signing for us. Good confident player.

  • 31 jimiley // May 11, 2013 at 8:00 PM

The fat man is choking on his pint. He hates Dave whelan. Whelan has won something the fat man and the Toon never will. We are the eternal chokers whether we are trying to win something or fight relegation. Great to see Wigan play much better footy than we can only dream about. I want us to stay up but in footy terms they are much better than us. We should be going down because we play rubbish. I would swap their team and manager for ours at the drop of a hat. So jealous. Any crappy little team can win something except us. Dream on fat man!!!!!

  • 32 breno95 // May 11, 2013 at 8:01 PM

Superb result for Wigan. By far the better team from start to finish. Congratulations and the plaudits all deserved.
Its an example to all that belief and a strong team ethic can pay dividends.
Lets hope that our lot tomorrow will show the same qualities and secure our own PL status.
As for the comments from AndyNUFC, not clever, lacking intelligence, immature and should be kept to yourself.
If we are relegated it will because its warranted due to a very poor season. I hope we stay up and the wrongs of this season will be corrected and its serves as a kick up the arse to some who obviously need it as nobody has a divine right to play in PL and that includes NUFC.
Hope Pardew has got our lot believing and prepared to win at QPR.

  • 33 davis_toons // May 11, 2013 at 8:04 PM

This story needed to be retold.

Ronaldo under Pardew will become Mr Nobody. Why?

He hate cocky players, players with flair to display,

Pardew: “Hey Cristiano, can’t you just get back there and defence for the good of the team?”

    CR7: …but I’m born to attack…i defence like a clown.

Pardew: Stop all you nonsense excuse, now get back there and polish up your defensive skill. Before i drop you from playing and …(show off your skill)

Some will ask: How about Messi?

Pardew: Ok, guys he may be a good player or one of the best but he is too small to be in our team. We train Giants only. And our philosophy is not football on the ground.

Players like Mcmanaman will only harm the team by not put in extra effort to defence.

  • 34 davis_toons // May 11, 2013 at 8:06 PM

So do you guys still want Mcmanaman? Even if he is good on the ball? Putting aside the horrible challenge.

  • 35 Jackel001 // May 11, 2013 at 8:11 PM

    Andy@20

Sit down, take a deep breath, and stop lying to yourself.

There is no glory in 38 points from 36 games, but there is a joy everlasting an a lifetime of good feelings in lifting that cup.

Success – footballing success – is what the game is all about. NUFC fans have long forgotten the meaning of the word, let alone had chance to experience it. Ashley doesn’t care – his success is measured in a spreadsheet. Fans now measure success in who we bring in over the summer months.

You need to take a look at Wigan expenses and the club running methods. Then tell us if Pardew were to be in-charge of Wigan can he do what RM have done.

When you said that RM have been fighting relegation. Should you said that: They should have been relegated 3 years ago?

Read the financial report and tell us if Pardew would complain. If given those transfer funds.

One manager will not stay at Wigan for sure. That’s KK.

How long can Pardew last in Wigan? How fast can he learn?

    http://www.transferleague.co.uk/premiership-transfers/wigan-athletic-transfers.html

Again i didn’t want Pardew to be sack yet.

  • 44 Rotonda heights // May 11, 2013 at 8:36 PM

  • 46 Tinman - Pardwho? // May 11, 2013 at 8:39 PM

Some fans want McManaman at the Toon now?
Same fans calling for him to be hung drawn and quartered.

What do I say to these people?

    Have some bloody pride.
There are literally thousands of players with McManamans quality that are available to a club with scouting networks the size of ours.
To say people want to sign him after one good game is pretty upsetting to me. He would disrupt our dressing room more than he would add to the team.

Yeah he is a good player, but come on. If he was a top player we would have seen more from him before now, he is 22…

  • 47 davis_toons // May 11, 2013 at 8:43 PM

    ..to clarify.

McManamon is an upcoming player thats why RM defence him dearly. Can’t afford to lose him to match ban.

I like McManamon as a player with his attributes but not stupid challenge, of course.

This is the kind of English talent that we need to get of hands in.

But is St James the best place to groom him? What will our manager think of him? Can he still flourish under our kind of attacking football?

Another raw talent from Arsenal (On loan at Wigan)
    Ryo Miyaichi *
    Left Wing

    Get him if we can.

  • 48 Rotonda heights // May 11, 2013 at 8:44 PM

    croftus

Very strange comment. One plays football. We know which one doesn’t. One has a very talented squad inc 20M worth of new players in Janurary. Martinez has always worked on a shoestring and worked wonders. He’s also had successive promotions and up till possibly this season no relegations.

Pardew has had Charlton, West Ham and now us all in this position.

  • 49 Tinman - Pardwho? // May 11, 2013 at 8:47 PM

Got to agree with Rotonda, anyone who thinks Pardew is in the same class as Martinez is a buffoon

  • 50 Jail for Ashley // May 11, 2013 at 8:48 PM

    Rotonda,
You make it sound so easy getting 19M worth of players and making them all fit in to a side seriously low on confidence and morale that has been sucked out of them by a greedy cretinous owner devoid of any human feelings.

  • 51 Tinman - Pardwho? // May 11, 2013 at 8:50 PM

Jail, sorry mate but its Pardew who sucks the life out of players not Ashley… Ashley has probably only met those French players on a handful of occasions. Why is the side low on confidence and morale? Probably because of their manager…

  • 52 breno95 // May 11, 2013 at 8:51 PM

    Davis
I agree. The lad ryo myaichi or whatever he is called is a good, tidy player.
Not a bad shout there with him.

  • 53 jimiley // May 11, 2013 at 8:53 PM

The Toon will win nowt until the psychology is changed. We are s..t scared of success because we have not won anything for so long. The whole essence of the club is mired in failure. We choke in cup finals and we choke in relegation fights. And do not mention penalty shoot outs. The fans are the same ( so starved of success) and their nervousness at the first hint of success translates to the players. Any shit club eg Wigan and Swansea can win something but we are a much bigger club but still seem a million miles from success. It seems Hartlepool will win something before us. Success at the minute is staying in the league. Others losing more like eg Wigan, who are a better team. How sad is that?

  • 54 stuart no9 // May 11, 2013 at 8:53 PM

after that wigan performence , i think they will go down.
that is probably the worst think that could have happened to them- regarding staying up.
I was hoping for extra time so they would tire even more but i think that may have taken it out of them.
they wont calm down till about monday and with a game on tuesday, it is going to be a very busy time- that can only be good news for us however, is pardew going to see the opportunity here , and is he going to take it?
I hope he was watching wigan today to see that if you attack the opposition , no matter who they are , and have faith in your players , any thing can happen- but i’m not holding my breath , coz hes fu”’cking useless !

  • 55 davis_toons // May 11, 2013 at 8:54 PM

  • 57 sparky55 // May 11, 2013 at 8:55 PM

I’ve always said even before todays final that Martinez has done an incredible job keeping them up as long as he has.

No transfer budget to speak of
No players of any note…can anyone reel off their starting eleven without cheating
No real support due to the other premiership clubs so near to them
    A selling club

But he’s shown us all what a club can do with a manager who tries to platy the game the way it should be played.

Pardew…you’re not fit to lick his @rse never mind his boots

  • 58 jimiley // May 11, 2013 at 8:55 PM

    Rotonda,
But which muppet appointed Pardew and then gave him an 8 year contract. The problem comes from the very top. Until the fat man goes our heartache will continue. Any good manager will walk.

  • 59 Big Pappa Cissé // May 11, 2013 at 8:59 PM

  • 60 jimiley // May 11, 2013 at 9:00 PM

Hopefully we stay up. After the Arsenal game he should get the same treatment Big Sam got. Then he and the club will know for sure where he stands. Big Sam is a much better manager and got some really undeserved abuse from the fans. Pardew has served up rubbish for a whole season and the crowd has been as meek as lambs.

  • 61 Tinman - Pardwho? // May 11, 2013 at 9:01 PM

Jail, it doesnt matter why we went down in 2009. It has no relevance to the post.
The point I made in my last post was that Ashley is not the man who increases a players confidence and morale. Its not his job. That is the job of the manager. End of.

  • 62 Sazzer // May 11, 2013 at 9:02 PM

  • 63 sparky55 // May 11, 2013 at 9:05 PM

you’re right…allardyce is a much better manager than Pardew but he still got all he deserved at newcastle by doing exactly what Pardew is doing now…playing people out of position and setting up trying not to lose but because Pardew owes someone a lot of money Fat boy hasn’t churned out the same ultimate punishment yet…we live in hope for some sort of consistency!

  • 64 Joe Blog // May 11, 2013 at 9:06 PM

Ferguson is just as good if not better than Mcmanman.

I’m yet to see Mcmanaman produce a dribble as dazzling as Ferguson’s against Stoke, from near the corner flag all the way onto the edge of their 6 yard box, getting a shot off. He’s also got a lot better delivery than Mcmanaman – his only hindrance is Pardew – that dribble was 2 years ago, when he was first emerging and had the zip and courage of youth, Pardew’s done a lot of mental damage to the youngsters. I mean, didn’t he get 3 assists in 3 games earlier in the season, at least 1 of those been a sub appearance? Then Pardew just dumps him, just because of a couple of quieter games, when there’s the usual suspects putting in sub-par performances every week – the way he treat the youngsters was disgraceful.

  • 65 northernirishtoon // May 11, 2013 at 9:13 PM

    Joeblog

Great post. Summed it up nicely

You have to have faith in the kids and play people on merit and form rather than who gives the best head

Pardews biggest problem IMO is not picking players on form. Or should I say not having the balls to drop the players that aren’t

  • 66 giimps // May 11, 2013 at 9:20 PM

I would rather eat my own ears than have that little scouse thug at our wonderful club.
Martinez may be a good manager at Wigan but what proof is there that he could do it with the pressure of Newcastle and our fans, It is different at Wigan, never any grief from either of their fans, an owner who dont mind if they dont start playing football till easter and a team of players trying to make their mark in the premier league (or have failed elsewhere) I would rather have Hitzfield or Bilic, I hate Whelan and Martinez for the Haidara incident and cannot forget their shameful reactions at the time.
We need to attack the game tomorrow from start to finish, Colo in defence with Saylor, Debuchy and Mbiwa, Benny Marv and Gouffy behind Cisse and Tiote Cabaye and Anita would see it done, If we lose or draw tomorrow there will be no hiding place for the silver Meerkat and he should resign, let Beardsly pick the team vs Arsenal, at least if were going down, he wont let us go down without a fight.
    HWTL and FTW

You must be so confident of that team Giimps that you are advocating playing without a keeper.
