At the final whistle Alan Pardew was relieved that Newcastle had secured their safety in the league, as the lads hung on for the last nine minutes with ten men, after Rob Elliot clearly handled outside the box and was given a seocnd yellow card – what was he thinking?
Yoan Gouffran – scores Newcastle second goal
Yoan showed tremendous skill – made it look easy
It was a do or die effort by Newcastle this afternoon, and it had to be – but give credit to the lads because they got the result – and really that’s all that matters in these relegation scraps.
This is what Alan Pardew had to say to BBC Sport immediately after the game:
“It’s a big relief because this is a massive club. We got the win that we needed.” The injuries we’ve suffered this year have been horrendous, this type of year usually ends up in relegation.”
“It was a nervous display, we really needed that first goal. We’ve made mistakes but we will make sure that we protect ourselves, the Premier League is so unforgiving.”
There were some good displays this afternoon from the Newcastle side and Ben Arfa showed he is a match-winner and he got the penalty and scored from it to equalize for Newcastle after 18 minutes – and there’s no doubt with everybody fit we still have a good squad.
But the players have massively under-performed this season in the Premier League – and we need two strikers in the summer to augment the squad – and also have a clear-out of fringe players.
The other thing Newcastle should do is try mightily to keep Fabricio Coloccini – who had a magnificent game at the back this afternoon for the Toon, as he brilliantly marshaled the Newcastle defense – he was a hero today for Newcastle.
I’ll now be out for a few hours, as we go out to celebrate Mother’s Day here in the US – and my son Neil and I will also celebrate Newcastle staying in the Premier League.
We’ll make up a list of new players that we need to sign this summer. 😀
See you later.

Comment #44226 million for Tiote? Yeah alright.
I actually dont mind Pardew………… when he keeps his gob shut. His latest comments about the Arsenal game and our recent performances really leave you asking questions about his mindset. I think i will refrain from reading his interviews now as they just anger me.
Its nice to stay up but having had aspirations of a top 8 finish its not all that great in a season in which Wigan and Swansea have won cups playing decent football. We seem to be going backwards. If Pardew gets another season i best see improvements otherwise i dont think i can take 19 games at SJP and will revert to away games again.

Comment #444It was a relief to win today. The game was much the same as most games this season. We sat too deep and invited them on. It’s was only after conceding a ridiculous penalty that we took the game to QPR and pressed them in their half.
Once we took the lead it was back to the usual formula. Sit an contain. I cannot go through another season of that drivel. The thing is if, and I know it’s a big if, results go our way we could finish tenth.
Pardew and perhaps Ashley would see that as an achievement.
I can hear Pardew now sitting on the Goals on Sunday sofa.
“We finished fifth in my first full season. In the next season we got to the quarter final of the UEFA cup and finished tenth. I don’t know why I was sacked.”
Facts don’t always tell the full story.

Comment #445Let’s be honest, Pardew needs to go now. This season has proved how inept he has been. I could bullet point all his tactical mishaps & ridiculous outbursts but all has been said before.
Now Mike has to act and bring in a good, youngish, modern manager who can get our players playing the way they and us fans want them to play: positively, exciting & well. A lot of names have been bandied around and notably Rafa Benitez. Rafa would be a huge improvement but I think we need younger blood & somebody who Ashley would realistically pay wages for.
I’d take a look at either Roberto Martinez or Michael Laudrup. Laudrup has a great understanding of the game and he sets his sides out to pass the ball & play football how it should be also his players are always looking to retain possession. Laudrup has a great understanding of the Spanish market to hence some of his great signings he’s made for Swansea.
Martinez, though, is my first choice. At only 39 he has had a remarkable managerial career so far. He established Swansea’s wonderful to watch style of play and got them promotion to the Championship. The way Swansea play today is down to his initial work and their chairman Huw Jenkins has pursued this Matinez-esque style with similar managers e.g. Paulo Sousa, Brendan Rodgers & now Michael Laudrup. At Wigan, Martinez has maintained this great footballing style & got them to play some magnificent stuff.
People may say that he’s always fighting relegation with Wigan but what do you expect with the lack of funds available and losing his best players all the time. It’s remarkable how he’s managed to maintain their status for so long. He instills a passion in his players to win but always insists on playing football in a positive way.
Martinez would be superb for us as he would get us playing entertaining, attacking football but also give the player’s pride & passion (whatever their nationality). He’s experienced but still very young in managing terms so he could with more money money & more international quality players here could really mould us into a top 7 side. As well he does have good scouts in the Hispanic countries so add them to Graham Carr’s team. He’s won a trophy too with the FA Cup and Wigan’s squad is much smaller than ours and they still may even stay up.
Ashley please: Pardew Out & Martinez In!

Comment #447Can’t see the point in getting a twisted face over this managerial debate.
Mike Ashley is in a good mood and if Wigan go down, he’ll be in an even better one. Be that as it may, its his call. his call and no-one else’s. I think we will spend a bit in the summer and I think we know where the gaps are, with the bones of a decent, settled side. If the pitches aren’t baked hard, SA will make for a decent pre-season. There’s no ruddy ANC to disrupt our winter and a World Cup to keep everyone one his toes.
Roll on August. Woohoo!
