At the final whistle Alan Pardew was relieved that Newcastle had secured their safety in the league, as the lads hung on for the last nine minutes with ten men, after Rob Elliot clearly handled outside the box and was given a seocnd yellow card – what was he thinking?
Yoan Gouffran – scores Newcastle second goal
Yoan showed tremendous skill – made it look easy
It was a do or die effort by Newcastle this afternoon, and it had to be – but give credit to the lads because they got the result – and really that’s all that matters in these relegation scraps.
This is what Alan Pardew had to say to BBC Sport immediately after the game:
“It’s a big relief because this is a massive club. We got the win that we needed.” The injuries we’ve suffered this year have been horrendous, this type of year usually ends up in relegation.”
“It was a nervous display, we really needed that first goal. We’ve made mistakes but we will make sure that we protect ourselves, the Premier League is so unforgiving.”
There were some good displays this afternoon from the Newcastle side and Ben Arfa showed he is a match-winner and he got the penalty and scored from it to equalize for Newcastle after 18 minutes – and there’s no doubt with everybody fit we still have a good squad.
But the players have massively under-performed this season in the Premier League – and we need two strikers in the summer to augment the squad – and also have a clear-out of fringe players.
The other thing Newcastle should do is try mightily to keep Fabricio Coloccini – who had a magnificent game at the back this afternoon for the Toon, as he brilliantly marshaled the Newcastle defense – he was a hero today for Newcastle.
I’ll now be out for a few hours, as we go out to celebrate Mother’s Day here in the US – and my son Neil and I will also celebrate Newcastle staying in the Premier League.
We’ll make up a list of new players that we need to sign this summer. 😀
See you later.

Comment #81Got to look at the bigger picture..I think you need to start changing your expectations of can be achieved. Last year was a great example of what could happen if things went our way ie: players staying fit and on form…The problem this year is that we simply could not cope with playing 2 games a week. On top of that the injuries are there for everyone to see and the inevitable loss of form ..I think its pretty naive to just say PARDEW OUT and all that shiote without looking at it objectively. We over achieved last year and learnt a lot of lessons this year in how to cope with a 2 game a week campaign.. Personally, Im happy to keep Pardew..He has done a great job in the last 2 and half years on the grand scheme of things..The club is slowly but surely building..This season is just something to look back on and learn from..
Nobody knows what it would be like to have Pardew as a long term manager to bring stability this club. We have never experienced it, we have only ever experienced short term success which is why everyone goes mental if we haven’t won the league in 2 seasons :/

Something that worries me is how shocking Cabaye has been this season. Can’t remember his last good performance.
It’s frightening how many of our players have been shocking at simple short passes. Cabaye, Tiote and Anita in particular!
Hopefully we can sign some CMs that are decent at keeping it simple

What does it matter if i would keep him?
Do i own the club?
Do you actually think ashley will sack him? no
My point being that your endless rants maybe entertaining but have no bearing on anything at all and naming list after list of manager’s is going to effect nout

Comment #86Wow. It isnt “well done Pardew for keeping us up” it is “get rid now, we should be top 5 despite loads of injuries and a run in a second competition”.
You do realise we could actually finish 10th? Just like we could have finished 3rd last year?
Same manager, different players, says it all to me.

Comment #88A massive relief today after a total mess and disaster of a season. Most of us on this blog al least blames Pardew the most because of his negative tactics and baffling substitutions and starting line ups. Me included. It’s been mostly horrible to watch all season, Only Chelsea game got me jumping and fist pumping the air like stevie T.
All this rambling from me is just self therapy after having to endure this season. I’m not joking, I have gotten some grey hair during his season, and it is not in tribute to the silver fox, I’ll promise you that, make no mistakes about it. ( see what I did there)
I am from Norway so i have to ask you locals this question. From the bargain price manager bin, would not Ian Holloway be a good choice? He plays attractive football right, but comes out as a stand up comedy show in front of the press. Any thoughts about him?

Harper in his last game at SJP. I’m pleased you mentioned it. Because those are the moments you keep; the little triumphs of the spirit that last when everything that you think is important now is just a faded memory.

Comment #90Jail – I have given up on you mate. My target market is not those who believe the vindictive nonsense spouted by those who’ll believe you rather than me. It’s about the team and I am celebrating along with Carl who I haven’t seen for a few years. Above all else I am looking forward to better times ahead. Ashley is slow to learn but he does learn and he has big plans for comings and goings in the transfer market. It’s because he has acknowledged his mistake by not investing last summer that Pardew’s hand has been strengthened. Ashley was in great form after the game and loved his name being chanted. Not by me I hasten to add. I have principles despite what you may think.
Enjoy your evening. Rejoice, rejoice !

When the first lick of a man made fire burst into existence the early homosapians gathered around grunting confused at what had been created.
One stood back, pointed and said ‘fire’. The others stood quietly, looked on for a moment and returned to mindlessly beating the floor and throwing shit at one another.
Your quote was reminiscent of that moment in my eyes. Whilst the beasts fight the thinker stops, watches and comments.

Comment #94Boys, stop wasting your breath!
Everyone with a grasp of reality knows who our manager will be at the start (and, most likely, the end|) of next season .
He’s been here about two and a half years.
if you’ld been offered 10th, 5th, 13th (aas it stands with one game to go)and quarter finals of the Europa Cup before he was appointed, what would you have said ?
Now let’s be honest, answers, please.

Comment #95Pardew has to go if for no other reason than that he’s lost the fans.
A huge proportion want him to leave, and they’re not going to change their minds – so for that reason he has to go. At the end of the day, the paying fans own the club, they’re it’s lifeline.

Comment #97The biggest problems we have this season in the team have been ball retention and backward passing.
We have one of the worst goals against in the league. The defence is not the worst but when they spend most of the game defending it is inevitable we will concede.
A lack of confidence / confidence in our front line has meant too many balls from defence and midfield go sideways or backwards. There is little fluidity to our play and that has been the case for almost all of this season.
If we are outplaying teams then it is more likely we will win. The fact is we have been poor all season and there has been a necessity to hold onto leads which has not worked like it did last season. Last season we outplayed teams.
Too many players have underperformed this season and that is why we are in the league.
Who / how many players in our team have had a season to be proud of?

Comment #98People on here are stupid to believe many myths that Pardew has peddled this year, we have played less games than most teams, and in many EL games we have played the kids, also did in domestic cup competitions. Its just ridiculous to blame injuries,
Lambert has had the same problems at Villa, has played kids all year and hasnt grumbled once, guess what they are playing like a team possessed and look like staying up, not an international in their team. We have about 15 ints in our squad, pathetic excuses, and ridiculously believed.

Holloway would be too much of a gamble. He’s hardly the most stable manager. Has done well but done badly at other lower league clubs. Family based in London aswell so won’t want to leave palace

Comment #104Pardew insists his priority is for Newcastle fans to “enjoy themselves” on the last day of the season.
“We got an important result today,” he told reporters. “I don’t really care if Arsenal win 4-0 if I’m honest – I’m sure Spurs will – but I only care that our fans enjoy themselves.
Oi… Alan… Getting spanked 4-0 at home WILL NOT ENTERTAIN THE FANS AND WE WILL NOT ENJOY IT..

Comment #107BandB- Nothing personal. I can’t betray confidences. Time will tell.
Hope your as thrilled as I am. There was just too much pressure at home we had to do it away. Social networks and Freddy did it for SBR but Ashley and his people engage with the toon army. I was told that we’re apparently around 68% behind Pardew but Ashley has been known to just do what he wants to because he can. Enjoy your summer.

Comment #111Taking the Pappis, your posts this evening have been the most sensible, balanced and without personal prejudice against Pardew I have read in a long time on this blog.
Like you, my take on Pardew is that unless we can attract a proven top class Prem manager like Benirez (unlikely) we should stick with Pardew and give him 10 games next season to show that this season – and not the last one – was a one off.
The ranting and raving on here about Pardew is exactly the same reaction to when we sold Carroll. Then, mosts fans were ranting and raving against Ashley selling Carroll saying it totally showed he was only here for the money blah, blah, blah – now the same fans are ranting and raving saying bringing AC back even for half the price or less means a return to hoofball. Ignoring the fact that they claim we play hoofball now!!!!
It makes my laugh, it really does.

i think your talking to me “minxpie”!!!??
now my defending of pardew has been based on facts that i’ve stated many times!!
so how is that stupid OR blind?
and how am i being stupid in stating that a person that has PLAYED professional football and has worked through the coaching staff and became a manager through many different levels and worked with many players and tactics to win games and guide teams into europe n fa cup finals better suited to the job than fans who say anything otherwise so how is that stupid catchy!!?
and you call pardew arrogant!!

Another bad performance though in truth.
Good thing that Bosingwa is a sell-his-soul-for-a-penny moron and that the goalie slipped.
Think it has reached breaking point for pardew now. We need someone who will attempt to play actual football with an actual game plan preferably with no hoofy mchoof.

Comment #114Thank heavens that’s over. Hopefully never again.
Time to build. We have the nucleus of a very good team and don’t need too many new faces. French players, who came in during January, will be substantially better next season. However, we don’t need any more foreign players, we have more than enough now.
My priorities would be:
Forwards: I would welcome home Andy Carroll. I would also get Charlie Austin.
Retain: I would keep Simpson and Williamson. We need strength in depth. Whilst not first on the team sheet they always give 100% when asked. We also need to keep Colo. This could be difficult because of his family problems but the club must try to keep him. He brings stability and calmness to the defence.
Sell: Obertan, Gosling, Sammy, Tavernier and Ferguson and any other fringe players who have had opportunities but haven’t come up to the mark.
As for the manager, I would keep Pardew as chopping and changing managers isn’t always a success as our recent history proves.

Get real, if anything instead of trying to convince me Pardew has done a great job on restricted backing, let yourself accept his replacement would be a Curbishley or forgotten 80s manager who had 1 good team in his career.
