Pardew – Thank God We’re Not In Europa League Next Season

11:01 pm, Sunday, May 12th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 133 Comments

Newcastle got their first win in six games this afternoon, and climbed four places in the table to 13th – and if we can beat Arsenal next Sunday, and that will not be easy, we have a chance to finish even higher in the league, and we could get up to 10th place – - if all the results go for us next Sunday – which would be unbelievable.

Yoan Gouffran celebrates after scoring a great opportunist goal

Alan Pardew was simply delighted that Newcastle were finally safe after a very tough second half today, and the defense with Coloccini, Yanga-Mbiwa and Mike Williamson having excellent games at the back – was the key.

We had mentioned when Williamson was included in the side in place of Steven Taylor who was sick, that Mike can play well in big games, and he again didn’t let the side down today – and all credit to him.

This is what Alan Pardew said after the game to reporters:

“We got an important result today,” “I don’t really care if Arsenal win 4-0 if I’m honest – I’m sure Spurs will – but I only care that our fans enjoy themselves.” “I’m very pleased.”

“It was a very important game for this football club. Particularly this year with the finance of the Premier League.”“I thought both penalties were dubious.”

“We played well after that, showed great resilience and it is massive for the North-East to have a team in the Premier League.” “Accusations of a ‘rift’ are absolutely ridiculous. Those that made them will be sobbing in their beer today,”

“I think if I put my best eleven out every week we would be a top-eight side but I’ve only been able to put it out three times at most. It’s an unforgiving league and if you look at this division, the likes of Swansea and West Brom are only five or six points ahead of us.”

“It’s been an unbelievable season and I think it’s been so, so tight because of the financial rewards at stake this year. I will make sure that we are well prepared for next season, and thank God we are not in the Europa League again.”

We must go all put for a win against Arsenal next Sunday – and who knows if we can get a win – then we’ll finish this terrible season off in style – which would be good.

That has to be the major goal now. and since we get £800K for each place in the League table, Newcastle will not do too bad if we can finish near the middle of the table this season.

And it will also help our recruitment in the summer – which is likely to be an exciting time for Newcastle fans.

We hope it will be an   an exciting time for Newcastle fans. :D

We must try for top six again next season and turn this thing around.

But hey – we are safe – and that’s just fantastic.

Comments welcome.

Single handedly the worst comment given by any nufc manager since Pardew last opened his mouth.

    Absolutely disgraceful

  • 2 nightfa11 // May 12, 2013 at 11:04 PM

sensible words for a “wee club”…fcuking retard..sack him now!

Obviously odious comments by our manager. But everybody (I assume) can see where he’s coming from: We’re safe now, nothing else matters.

RAFA OR BLANC that is the question??? What a twat of a man. Please sack him now ashely!!!!

I honestly think the man has had a nervous breakdown.

  • 7 nick_9 // May 12, 2013 at 11:08 PM

Thank god we didn’t finish in a european position this season, its much better fighting relegation or mid table mediocrity. It pains me to see the likes of Wigan and Swansea winning cups and Alan wishing away the thought of extra games. Why do we even bother competing at all?

Surely he should be saying “bring europe on, we have learned lessons from the experience”

  • 8 elpaso_geordie // May 12, 2013 at 11:09 PM

He must have loved Sunderland and Liverpool at home then. D*ck

Yeah thank god we aren’t in Europe next year eh ???
looking forward to a nosebleeding 10th placed finish and early cup exits again next year — sure as hell wouldn’t want to qualify for that Europa again….
    What a W**ker !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Nightfa11

There have been some selection question marks. Anita has only just joined the club and so will not be sold soon. Tiote or Gutierez are reaching the end of their toon careers. If they do not play they are not in the shop window.

Not such a ‘stupid’ comment anymore. It does not take a genius to realise what I implied. Next time I will elaborate to help u out.

he may as well have said, thank god we don’t get extra funding, the ability to develop younger players, the chance to play great teams and players, get more ticket money, and thank god we won’t atrract many big names to us as we are DO NOT WANT ANY OF THAT, i hope he reads his comments back and leaves, what a shambolic man

Someone buy ‘Arry a bottle of fizz, he must have really worked hard gift wrapping those goals.

A bit like watching the TV wrestling in the 1960s, except without the skills. The QPR fans should have been refunded and compensated – an utterly embarrassing exhibition by all concerned. Heads should have been hung in shame rather then the air being punched.

Still one less ‘big fish’ in the Championship pond to worry about next season, eh ‘Arry?

    “I don’t really care if Arsenal win 4-0 if I’m honest ” – AP

OMG, we are trusting this guy to bring us trophies and challenge for Champions league spot? 8 years contract? What dumb comments .. No wonder we are just a Wee club in the North. We are suppose to be in the class of Spurs, Gunners and blues but in reality , we are closer to the likes of Wigan, Bolton, Boro according to AP .

7 more years of relegation battles to come !

  • 19 yo-yo // May 12, 2013 at 11:16 PM

These comments are as much evidence as you need that he’s toast. No coach/manager says they that don’t care about the last home game of the season being a 4-0 drubbing if they are expcting to stay in their job. It’s not simply a facetious comment – it is a public resignation. (not that ANY fan could ‘enjoy’ that)

I was wrong earlier thinking it was him off the cuff being drunk with survival.

  • 20 Novocastrian66 // May 12, 2013 at 11:16 PM

It was a relief to win today. The game was much the same as most games this season. We sat too deep and invited them on. It’s was only after conceding a ridiculous penalty that we took the game to QPR and pressed them in their half.
Once we took the lead it was back to the usual formula. Sit an contain. I cannot go through another season of that drivel. The thing is if, and I know it’s a big if, results go our way we could finish tenth.
Pardew and perhaps Ashley would see that as an achievement.
I can hear Pardew now sitting on the Goals on Sunday sofa.
“We finished fifth in my first full season. In the next season we got to the quarter final of the UEFA cup and finished tenth. I don’t know why I was sacked.”
Facts don’t always tell the full story.

  • 21 toon252 // May 12, 2013 at 11:16 PM

    He’s an idiot -

A few days ago he said “last season was milk and honey, but the fans can’t expect to get milk and honey every season”

What he basically is saying is that we are a small club and shouldn’t challenge the top 6 every year. He is a complete and utter idiot

Now he’s saying thank god we’re not in Europa – So we shouldn’t aim for Europe? I really don’t like the guy and any fan who does is mad – He would be happy for us to finish 10-12th every year and not progress.

He sees not getting us relegated as an achievement, no Alan it isn’t. No Alan the fans don’t want to see us get beat 4-0 at home after we have conceded 9 in our last two home games.

Get out of our club. If any fan is happy to finish 12th every year and not have European nights again then why don’t you go support the mackems you retards!

  • 22 magpieboom_6 // May 12, 2013 at 11:17 PM

What a clown this guy is.

As mentioned before, is he happy battling for our PL status versus playing a few extra games against some top teams across Europe?

He needs to go. Right after the Arsenal game. Gone. His talk and tactics are just utter nonsense.

  • 24 nick_9 // May 12, 2013 at 11:18 PM

Thank god we’re not in europe and doesn’t care if we lose 4:0 now after losing 3:0 to our rivals and 6:0 in the last game. Seriously cannot believe a manager would make those comments. He is more arrogant than kinnear, i have developed a strong disliking for Pardew lately so its going to take a lot to change that now. Never been one to boo but i don’t mind admitting i cant stand him

  • 29 breno95 // May 12, 2013 at 11:20 PM

What a ridiculous statement to give to the press.
What inspiration do comments like that give to the players.
Its no wonder we have had trouble signing players if AP has been trying to sell his ideas of ambition. If i am mistaken after Remy chose QPR Mike Ashley dealt directly with transfers and we all know what happened then. We got 5 in 7 days.

As AP said himself, we are a massive club and the least we should have is a manager that wants to win and play against the best at home and in Europe.

Ashley cannot continue to allow this man to be the voice of NUFC as he is a complete and total embarrassment.

I want a new manager, the 25 man squad i posted on the last thread and i might, just might renew my ticket for next season. If we get turned over next week i for one wont be full of joy. Plus i want a set up that has a desire to achieve trophies and europe not one that is happy to scrap year on year.

  • 30 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // May 12, 2013 at 11:20 PM

Disgusting comment from Pardew, almost as disgusting as the racist homophobic comment made by Mark the Mag @174 in the previous thread.

You’ve been reported by the way, don’t ever refer to an Irish man as “a potato eating terrorist” who is “queer” for playing “gaylic” football.

    Jfa

I have kept a close eye on the blog and watching all the games plus nufc news / rumours.

Relieved we are safe. Suggested a while back pards will go at the end of the season and players will be sold so we can bring in a decent manager with a the lure of a hefty war chest.

To be honest I am worried that getting rid of pards could take us backwards. It is not an easy decision to make and who can we realistically attract. Who makes the decision about the right man to take us forward? Board of directors, led by DL and MA. Now do u get what I mean.

Pardew has demonstrated his total lack of ambition by declaring he was pleased we are not in the Europa League next season.

Ok, lets assume we have a great season next year and look like finishing in an European League place what will he do?

Also does that rule out winning any of the domestic trophies as they bring an Europa League place?

The message I get from Pardew is, “we are going to aim high next season, maybe finish as high as 10th, but no higher just in case”

My message to Pardew is “time to go” if that is the limit of your ambition.

Mr Ashley this man will not bring you true value for money with his approach. Get shot of him now. Let him ply his trade at a club with totally limited aspirations. You can let Llambias go as well while you’re at it.

  • 44 bollance // May 12, 2013 at 11:28 PM

  • 45 Sazzer // May 12, 2013 at 11:29 PM

  • 46 Joe Blog // May 12, 2013 at 11:29 PM

    Astonishing. Baffling.

The last couple of weeks, his interviews have become increasingly unhinged. He used to contradict himself from one interview to the next, now he does it with remarkable efficiency, one sentence to the next. He speaks like Europa is a burden – if that’s his attitude, then it’s a concession that he simply cannot cope, not the players, although I’m sure it rubs off on them, as with all his other preposterous comments.

What mental faculties he had, are frazzled.

How does he expect these words to be received?

Harmless casual racism is tolerated, nay expected, and we can take it in jest, to a point obviously, but insulting my culture is unacceptable, I for one am an extremely proud Irish man so I won’t be having my nation or culture be a point of ridicule.

Breno Plus i want a set up that has a desire to achieve trophies and europe not one that is happy to scrap year on year.

You’re supporting the wrong club. Get out now before disillusionment sets in! Trust me, 46 years after first passing through the sacred turnstiles there has only been occasional, sporadic signs of life – interspersed with the glory of runners up spots and long, long periods of scrapping year to year (as you accurately put it) and many, many massive disappointments.

Trophies? Nah, we don’t do them… They went out of fashion up here in 1955.

  • 51 mattyNUFC // May 12, 2013 at 11:31 PM

You remember some of the tiffs we used to get into? Time proved me right, unfortunately :)

Only kidding but glad that a lot of fans have woken up. I won’t get into last year….I was nearly as frustrated as I am now with everything but, like most, results were enough to pacify the utter crap play we were exhibiting. This year our results have sunk to the level of Pardew’s tactical nous.

Will really, really be disheartened if he is not replaced soon after the season. If it drags on for longer than two weeks after the Arsenal match, I think we’ve all got our answer, and that would be a worse decision than appointing him two and a half years ago

  • 68 remember69 // May 12, 2013 at 11:45 PM

Hi all, I believe at this point we are all absolutely relieved to have reached safety after what has been an incredibly frustrating season.

While it is easy to blame the manager I again keep going back to the fact that AP’s peers (Ferguson, Moyes et al) voted him the manager of the year last season.
This is based on the team over-performing, and AP getting the most out of his players. I don’t believe you can turn from being a good manager to a bad one overnight and we have to look at the season as a whole.
In my mind the jury’s out – I don’t think you can judge any manager on a single season. If AP can get in the players he WANTS and the team isn’t performing by January, then OK, let’s per-evaluate options.
BTW – speaking of Ferguson he was hated by fans and almost sacked after being in the same portion as AP all those years ago…..

“For the 1989–90 season, Ferguson further boosted his squad by paying large sums of money for midfielders Neil Webb, Mike Phelan and Paul Ince, as well as defender Gary Pallister and winger Danny Wallace. The season began well with a 4–1 win over defending champions Arsenal on the opening day, but United’s league form quickly turned sour. In September, United suffered a humiliating 5–1 away defeat against fierce rivals Manchester City. Following this and an early season run of six defeats and two draws in eight games, a banner declaring “Three years of excuses and it’s still crap … ta-ra Fergie.” was displayed at Old Trafford, and many journalists and supporters called for Ferguson to be sacked.[50][51] Ferguson later described December 1989 as “the darkest period [he had] ever suffered in the game”, as United ended the decade just outside the relegation zone.[52][53]
However, Ferguson later revealed that the board of directors had assured him that they were not considering dismissing him. Although naturally disappointed with the lack of success in the league, they understood the reasons for the sub-standard results (namely the absence of several key players due to injury) and were pleased with the way that Ferguson had reorganised the club’s coaching and scouting system.”

    Food for thought ………..

  • 69 Jamiemac // May 12, 2013 at 11:46 PM

Clearly none of you actually saw the interview.

He said the final comment light heartedly – referring to the fatigue and injuries its caused us.

  • 70 yo-yo // May 12, 2013 at 11:46 PM

    To be fair

Our squad did not have enough quality.
We had 9 squad injuries for two separate periods during the season.
Laudrup was surely taking a dig at Pardew’s lack of managerial experience in juggling the squad mind

    breno95

Some nice players you got there, however:

I don’t know where you’re getting the idea of Shola retiring from. Cisse is a quality striker, he just gets no service. I would also keep Perch, Tiote, Williamson, Saylor, Elliot.

    Why?

Because they all do there jobs extremely well, aside from Tiote. You’re being unrealistic, you’re CB’s for starters. Colo Mbwia Sakho Douglas

Colo will be off I believe unless we get a new manager, Douglas doesn’t want to come to us, Mbiwa is far too nervy at the back and I highly doubt Sakho would do much better either. Takes them a while to get used to the premier league. MBiwa at CB makes a mistake every match. Plus all four of those players want first team football, we can’t give them that.

    CM’s
Sissoko Cabaye Anita Siem de Jong Bigiramana

Send Bigi out on loan, with them cm’s we seriously lack steel in the middle. Especially if Sissoko picks up and injury, but even then he’s not the best at tackling. Perch is fine with being a reserve player and is pretty decent at giving us that steel. Tiote will get back too his form eventually, so we may as well keep him and then sell him when he gets back on form anyway.

    LM’s
Santon whilst I believe would be good, is not a left mid. Plus they’re all going to want first team football as it’s the world cup. There’s only one spot.

    CF’s
    Bony Remy Kone Gouffran

Remy is quality but I’m not sure I’d have him here. Is there really a need for this many strikers? Especially if we’re playing 4-3-3? Ideally this is what I’d have. Feel free to criticize mine as well.

    GK’s
    Krul Elliot Alnwick

    RB’s
    Debuchy Simpson

    LB’s
    Haidarra Santon

    CB’s
Colo (I’d try my best to keep him) Mbwia STaylor Williamson (I’d get Sakho eventually as the replacement for Colo, just not yet)

    CM’s
    Sissoko Cabaye Anita Marveux Perch

    RM’s
    HBA Boudebouz

    LM’s
    Sinclair and Gouffran

    CF’s
    Cisse Carroll Gouffran Le Fondre

I’m not justifying anything, as I feel I do not need to justify defending my culture against racists, so if you’ve nothing constructive to post about football can you leave me to deal with the manner in which I post as I am not currently taking any advice on the issue.

Utterly ridiculous comment, from an utterly ridiculous man. To paraphrase Sir Winston Churchill: it’s better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Get lost Pardew, you utter turd.

  • 83 solano // May 12, 2013 at 11:53 PM

Jamiemac…i did see the interview, and it may well have been said light heartedly but it was also revealing of his mindset. The same mindset that has played down Europe and used it as a convenient excuse because of his failings and his bosses failings.
the whole season was a write off because we didn’t set out to better ourselves or have a crack at the cup competitions.

  • 84 kelykos // May 12, 2013 at 11:53 PM

Happy not to be in Europa League next season !!!! It puzzles me that the manager could say anything like that.

Hopefully, he won’t be in charge next season. He’s clueless, when I watch our match, the players have no idea offensively, they are nervy at the back, the pressure is erratic. To sum up, we are really poor collectively.

I hate Pardew with a passion and every time he opens his mouth I hate him even more.

He’s a shameless self promoter who always forgets to engage his brain before opening his big fat gob

He should be fined by the FA. Even if you think it (which just as bad) you can’t be seen to say it…spurs should make a complaint.

If Ashley had half a brain he should sack Pardew now to show some intent.

If Pardew stays Cabaye, Debuchy, Cisse, Anita, and Ben Arfa will all go for sure…the only thing that can keep our great squad together is a new manager with a history of playing proper football who can convince them to stay.

Pardew yet again reverted to type today and parked the bus having gone 2-1 up after 30 minutes and jeopardised our slender lead for the remaining 60 minutes of the game which if that strategy had gone pear shaped again like 20 times before this season, we would not be safe tonight and we would have had to get something from the game against Arsenal.

He can’t help himself and it also shows a complete lack of trust in his players…how would you feel if you’d gone 2-1 up after 30 minutes and then told by the manager you have to defend for the next 60 minutes when you’re fighting to fend off relegation.

The sooner he goes the better

I find it highly offensive that our manager can say thank god we are not in the Europa league next season, and that he is not bothered if arsenal win 4-0, totally scandalous, no regard whatsoever for the fans and it just shows how selfish those comments are.

Every single week this season this man pardew has managed in some way to wind me and I suppose a lot of others with his daft statements.

Michael Laudrup was different class when asked on motd about how he managed the Europa campaign with Getafe, he just said we dealt with it we had a small squad but enjoyed it and got to the quarter final and were very pleased with that, Pardew just moaned his t-ts of all the time about it, it has shown me all the excuses he makes are all about his own ego not getting hurt, these comments today are an insult to every fan supporting our great club, DISGRACEFUL.

Sorry, bud, but his is what the club has been re-invented into. The new Sunderland. We’ve forgotten what good football is about.
Benitez and Martinez are highly improbable for many reasons, but Mike Ashley is probably the most toxic reason.

  • 108 beefman13 // May 13, 2013 at 12:14 AM

Solano I made a comment earlier saying if MA is just happy to hover mid table as long as we are in the premiership just to promote the sports direct brand then I would be disgusted, I know quite a few have that view, I am not one of them but I will say if he sticks with pardew for next season and does not at least bring in a top notch foreign coach to at least work along side Pardew then I will start to have the doubts build in my mind about his reasoning.

I will state that we will make decent buys in the summer window I believe that, I hope the like of big daft shola and obertan and Williamson and simpson are shown the door and replaced with quality, trouble is I doubt even know if any prem team would want any of them so it may be difficult to move them on.

Pardews stagnant negativity has to change because we have got away with it by the skin of our teeth but it has stunk the Cathederal and many other grounds out to the max this season.

Players like Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Coloccini, M’biwa won’t stick around for long with this rambling idiot as the manager. And we won’t be able to attract the caliber of players that will take us forward when they look at how retarded our manager is.

  • 129 remember69 // May 13, 2013 at 2:25 AM

Let’s face it, it doesn’t matter what AP says his detractors are going to use his words in whatever context suits their own agenda.

After struggling this season it seems entirely practical to me wanting to focus on strengthening the squad and getting back to playing the football we did last season. Why would we want to revisit the exact same problems and struggles we witnessed this season?

Do you REALLY believe that AP does not care if Arsenal hammer us? Come on, you’re more intelligent than that. I’m 100% positive that his remark was made out of the relief that we are safe even if we are beaten.

I think the only way that AP can win certain ‘fans’ over is not to communicate with the press – hold on……. Isn’t that thenSAME complaint ‘fans’ have of the guy that is paying for the team ?

  • 130 mainemagpie // May 13, 2013 at 2:39 AM

So after our win today to make us safe in the EPL for next season our manager says this
    “I don’t really care if Arsenal win 4-0 if I’m honest –”

So the manager of the team does not care that we lose the last game of the season, which could be the difference between 13th and 10th and almost 4m pounds bonus…no wonder we don’t play with any enthusiasm under Pardew.

“I will make sure that we are well prepared for next season, and thank God we are not in the Europa League again.”

So the manager will prepare us well for next season but if we get close to a position that will qualify us for a European place in the 2014/2015 season we will do everything to avoid it. So Pardew’s ambition for next season is 8th in the league and not win FA Cup or League Cup, because god forbid we play more than 40 games in a season.

These 2 statements are enough to get Pardew fired. And so they should. Goodbye! good riddance!

  • 131 Sav // May 13, 2013 at 2:47 AM
