When Sylvain Marveaux arrived from Rennes on a free transfer two years ago – just one day after Demba Ba signed on for the club – we thought Sylvain was going to be an excellent signing – and he would add some class to the Newcastle side.
Sylvain Marveaux has looked a very good player this season
But before he arrived on Tyneside, Sylvain had struggled with injuries at Rennes, and had missed the last seven months of that season with a groin strain, and for his first season on board, Sylvain suffered a number of groin and other injuries, and didn’t play too many games.
He only appeared 10 times for Newcastle last season, but this season he has appeared 35 times with two goals, and he’s looked like the player we thought we had signed two years go.
Sylvain is probably the most improved player in the squad, and is one of the few players at Newcastle, who have played better this season then last.
Sylvain has been out recently with a groin strain, but returned to the squad last Sunday at QPR, but was surprisingly not brought on in the second half of that game – Gabby Obertan was preferred.
But it seems that Alan Pardew will use Marveaux in our last game against Arsenal tomorrow, and the Newcastle manager had this to say about the skillful French forward:
“We’ve missed Sylvain,” “The fact that he’s back is great news. He could be important for us. We didn’t need him last week, but this could be a different scenario. He’ll certainly play a part.”
Sylvain could again have a big impact next season, when we are hoping the side will be challenging for a top six position, although we need at least two new strikers this summer – so we don’t struggle so much to score goals.
We think Sylvain is the most improved player at Newcastle this season, and he leads in assists at the club this season with six, and Davide Santon is second with four assists.
What do you think?

The confidence issue is a strange subject. You would expect after last season that our existing players from that season would be high on confidence so I can’t explain the sloppiness.
Completely agree that Pardew should take an equal chunk of the blame as the players. Not sure if you were reading my comments last night/this morning. I don’t particularly like Pardew. He doesn’t come across well at all in interviews and his tactics against some of the ‘smaller’ teams are baffling. However I am one that firmly believes stability is a big thing in football. Since Pardew finished 5th last season I am more than happy to give him one more season (until January at least) just to see where on the spectrum he lies.

Comment #82Personally feel marveux is a bit over rated on here, the lad has looked poor as often as class, think he’s showing all the right signs at the moment but next season he really needs to find that consistency to cement a starting spot
Also benny needs to improve the basic side of his game, like passing!

Ben-Arfa’s stronger then the two as well, but I agree that those four should be starting every week.

Comment #85We do need a winger or a Phillipe Coutinho/Marveuax type player. If Coloccini stays, we just need 1 centre back and that’ll be the defense nearly sorted.
2 world class strikers should be our main priority. I’m afraid to say it, but Cabaye isn’t good enough. He offers little creativity and doesn’t get in the game enough.

Comment #86@Tads I have seen benny play wonder balls across the park this season. And the times he didn’t pass it and got caught out there was nobody running into space to support him looking for the pass. Ie the goal he gave away vs liverpool I think it was where nobody was around him he could pass it to and I believe it was coutinho who shouldered him of the ball witch led to a goal.

I’m not if Benny actually needs to improve his passing due to the fact that I haven’t seen him pass it often enough to judge whether it’s good or bad lol
On a serious note, if he can learn when to release the ball and not try to do too much then he would be phenominal.

I’d say we need at least two wingers to be honest. Unless anyone from the youth is ready to step up which I highly doubt. Maybe Ferguson. Then we need a striker.
If Collocini stays I don’t think we need a centre back.
Disagree on Cabaye, he’s great.

I don’t mean his passing ability mate, no doubt he can pick a killer pass, but like I said the basic stuff mate, like a four yard pass instead of running into 4 or 5 players and turning posesion

To be honest i would probably prefer as little changes to the squad as possible, give the players a chance to bond and grow as a team perhaps, having said that we have to keep hold of them which might prove difficult so they might be essential

Comment #94Maybe 1 winger and a winger-cum-playmaker.
We need at least 2 strikers as we only have Cisse and Gouffran. Every squad need 4 top class strikers. We only really have 1 as Gouffran’s more of a winger.
We can’t have Willo as 4th choice, we need at least another defender.

Comment #101jamiemac— ok so you admit the confidence thing is strange and something you cant explain- you admit pardew should take a chunk of the blame- you admit that he dosnt come across well in interviews – you admit his tactics are baffling.
At least you admit to it, and not trying to shy away from the issues.I also believe , like you , we need stability, however , looking back at the issues you admit to , do you still think pardew is that man to lay a foundation at this club and to bring stability to NUFC?

I disagree that Cabaye is as weak as you say but agrre that we do rely on him too much so if he plays poorly then so does the saide. So we do need another AM playmaker like De Jong fr’instance. I would also play Anita deeper than Cabs to allow him to play slightly more forward. All depends on formation then…Sissoko as box to box.
Agree the two top class strikers though

Comment #106To all the dreamers/knockers out there it’s time to face facts;
1) AP has done the job with what he has had available – yes we were lacking depth going into the season and I’m sure this was made clear to MA.
2) We can bounce a wish-list of names around, but to realistically sign them;
– they have to be available and at the right price
– they have to be the right fit for the team/club
– they have to want to be willing to fit into the pay structure.
– we have to either be ahead of or fight off competition.
3) We can dream of the likes of Benitez et al managing the team but they would never do so at the moment. It is a lot more difficult to be successful when funds are limited, and I assume the salary would be well below what would be required.
I think the club is on the right financial track (we don’t want to become a Leeds) but doing so leads to enormous challenges the likes of Benitez, Mancini and even Mourino have had to face.
Just throwing this out there to inspire intelligent discussion as the prevalent solution of ‘sack Pardew’ is getting a bit old.

Comment #107Yeah, that as due to Willo and Simmo. Hopefully they’ll be gone in the summer.
We need a new manager, but Pardew’s staying. He keeps playing the wrong players. I’d hate it if Tiote, Gutierrez and Ameobi were all in the team/squad for the first game of next season.

HBA didn’t just give away a goal! It was the third goal and at a time
when we were playing our best football of the game. In all likelihood we looked like getting back into the game. He was playing for himself and not the team. Something he does too often. Pardew had fired up the team and they had looked briefly like a recharged team.

in fairness most of the people who would not get rid of Pardew can see his faults, defending 1 goal leads some of his silly statements like the 4-0 Arsenal etc, but the problem I have is the exaggeration which goes on, the constant twisting of his comments to make them negative when they aren’t, then they have a go because he is arrogant, so what, many good managers are, players in wrong position, every manager does that and Pardew does no more than any other, but when trying to make that point we never get listened too and there is never an acceptance that his wrongs are being blow out of proportion, as a result it all becomes petty and boring.
I came onto the site this morning, the bashing was in full flow so I didn’t even bother joining in the debates as it would have just been futile, that should not be the case, sadly there are too many who cannot respond to a valid point in a rational manner, obviously some can, but too many don’t and as a result the site is spoilt for them, as it was for me this morning.

Comment #111@106 one of the first sensible posts I’ve seen in days. As woeful as the team has been, and questions around Pards tactical nous, i doubt the pitchforks will be put away anytime soon. Much as I’d love rafa , there won’t be the £3.5 m pa salary cast iron contract and £40m war chest he would request before taking the job.
So no pards…Laudrup won’t leave Swansea, Martinez will go to Everton. Who’s left? Rene Girard?

Not saying its a great system but seem to remember a lot of people saying he has very little to do with signings, think Carr brings him a folder of players and his part is simply to talk ash into parting with his wonga

My sentiments exactly – very well expressed. I am convinced the Pardew supporters are not real NUFC fans, as you suggest, these guys are either Mackems or they have absolutely no ambition whatsoever. As NUFC fans we should not accept the unacceptable, and Pardews managements this season has been wholly consistent with his previous second seasons – woeful! There is no excuse, the man’s a liability to NUFC, and so too are those ‘so-called’ supporters who defend him!

I don’t care for Pardew at all and I have zero confidence in him, but it seems like we’re stuck with him and for as long as he’s here, I’ll support him. That’s what we do, lads. We stick with the team – let’s stop slating everybody who has a varying opinion.

are all good players
They have just been turned in to a train wreck by a very poor manager
