We didn’t get relegated this season and almost two weeks ago that was very possible, and if Wigan had beaten Swansea at home 13 days ago, we would have been 3rd bottom for the first time this season, with just a couple of games to play.
Mike Ashley – three of Newcastle’s worst seasons in Premier League
So while we are all disappointed at how this Premier League season has gone – we live to fight another day – and that’s the main thing.
This will go down as the second worst season in the Premier League, because the 41 points is the second worst points total and 7 points better than when we were relegated a short four years ago, and also 16th place is the seocnd worst position in the Premier League ever.
But here are some of the stats that are the worst ever for Newcastle in the Premier League for this season:
- Worst goal difference at -23 , that was only -19 in or relegation season and is three worse than the -20 we had in 2007-2008 when we finished 12th
- Worst goals against of 68 – and that was the 4th worst in the Premier League this season – and it was 9 goals worse than in our relegation season – does our defense need to improve?
- Most games lost in a season – 19. We lost 18 in our relegation year and 17 in both 2006-2007 and 2007-2008
So it was really a very poor season for the lads.
We have to hope that because it was so bad, it will incite Mike Ashley to give Alan Pardew some real cash to spend in the summer, when the manager has said we need two or three top players brought in – hopefully three.
And since Mike Ashley arrived we have had three of our worst seasons in the Premier League ever – 2007-2008 (43 points), 2008-2009 (34 points) and now 2012-2013 (41 points).
Another reason why he needs to bring in three top players this summer.

Those moments of madness will happen with any players, they happen once or twice in one season. There’s no such thing playing without mistakes under pressure.

Comment #4The fact we get to live to fight another day makes it infinitely better than the relegation season. Relegation would’ve hurt a lot more this season knowing the squad we have is on the cusp of something.
Still its good to know that at our worse we’re still better than the unwashed 😉

Comment #6Santon… For sure they do but everyone knows santon isnt the greatest defender. If we could get his attacking ability without the defensive shakiness then that would be brilliant.

where in your suming up have you have a reason?
those stats point to one guy and you refuse to point a finger his way, you would rather give him more players to drag down
i find it totally amazing how JFK is held in such low regard for the season he had, yet we have a guy that has proved to be worse, yes PROVED, and you would trust him,
is it his nice suits?
i can see no logical reason why he should be kept , other than clueless fans ,

Toon have about 50,000 fans who go to SJP and probably the same number who go occasionally or just follow the club.
That’s 100,000 people.
Who are these clueless fans and why are they so stupid. ?
It seems you are condemning a large section of the population of Newcastle upon Tyne to special needs classes..

Comment #29Well, im glad that season is over with. That has got to go down as one of the most problematic seasons I’v ever encountered in supporting this football club in 25 years.
Poor preperation from the board last summer regarding squad depth and quality which pretty much wrote our season off to start with, our season was finished by January through this error alone because of the injuries sustained. The back up was never going to be good enough. We could never of expected Sammy Ameobi or Ferguson to fill the void left by a Ben Arfa or an Obertan, Jonas (even though they have been poor) a Tavernier to fill the likes of Danny Simpson etc etc. It was far too early in their development for such roles. Terrible decision from the board last summer, one I hope is never repeated. Wasted opportunity with us being in Europe which put the whole club under unnecessary pressure from the start in regards to the league. Something had to give and it was are league campaign.
No consistency, no continuity, no rhythmn to our play due to a horrendous injury list coupled with poor timing of the injuries. Shocking luck with this from start to finish with sometimes upto 3-4-5 of our best players out at a time for long periods with insufficient cover to come in. Players having to be fielded all over the park out of position for spells so we could try and put an experienced fit side out at stages. No settled back four, no settled midfield. Poor bench that didn’t really give us alot of options and experience up until January. By then it was too late to make anything of this season. Confidence was low, morale was down, nerves had well and truly crept in by this time.
Losing our best and top goal scorer\striker at the club and our captain wanting to leave made matters even worse in January. Talk about when the chips are down. With our luck they are well and truly down. A mistake by the board not bringing in an experienced striker in January has cost us dearly as you can see by the lack of goals. We have dearly missed Ba. Huge mistake by the board. Even though we missed out on Remy, where was the plan B? Gouffran is never a striker. A loan deal for a striker would of been sufficient. Because there was no plan B we have suffered.
Bringing five players to the club in January was always going to be a difficult task and once again we look to the board. They did make up for the summer but it dosn’t make up for the problems sustained until January, our season was finished with regards to the league. We can’t ask for five players to bed in so easy and adapt to the premier league and shoot us up the table. They have did ok though, just ok at this point. Ultimately, they have did what they were supposed to do, keep us up. Which I thank them for.
Under performing 1st team players due to no consistency and continuity in a settled 1st eleven through injuries and Europe. Some shocking performances from key players when they were available. We all know who they are. They just havn’t hit the standards they hit last season. Although, Cabaye has had his off the field problems. More bad luck.
A rocky campaign from Pardew and the coaching staff in regards to tactics, subs. Not horrendously bad for me, infact not terrible either. Pardew and the coaching staff has had alot to deal with, alot of unnecessary pressure placed upon them through the boards mistakes, which eventually has taken it’s toll on an already bad season, which was destined for the rubbish bin before we even kicked a ball this season. It was always going to be a struggle this season for the club for me. He is not blameless in all aspects, he has made mistakes and apologised rightfully mostly, but ultimately he may have to take the blame because that is his job at NUFC. I can see why he won’t be sacked though, plenty of viable reasons as to why he should stay.
To conclude, a string of errors from the top down to the bottom has seen us watch a poor season of football. With last season in mind, and seeing the team do so well under the same ownership and coaching staff last season, Im willing to wait it out until christmas and measure up the whole situation then. Im not willing to write the manager and the coaching staff off just yet who had a great season followed by a season of unnecessary pressure placed upon them. All managers make mistakes and given last season im willing to see what happens. Stability is imporatant to me, chopping and changing managers never brought us anything apart from pain. Im aware this club has a plan and has it’s limits, im also aware we have only been back in the Premier League for three seasons. I feel expectations should be pretty grounded at this point in time.
We are no top 6 outfit just yet, we are growing and bringing better players in. The odd mistake and odd slip up is nothing to me at this present time and im ok with Pardew seeing us through this process, if he proves he can do the job up until christmas. A top four assault would need a change in manager, the challenge what we have at the moment is getting into to the top 6-8. Thats where this club is for me and im confident he can take us through this phase.
Im looking forward and im very optimistic about next season. Players would have settled, two new strikers brought in so we can finally play two quality strikers upfront again. Wide men also. A good pre-season under their belts and we should be able to give it a right good go.
My own personal opinion, a balanced opinion without the intentions of propaganda.
Best of luck to the lads for next season and Alan Pardew and the coaching staff. 100% behind you.
HWTL.

Comment #39i think you will find fat ash and DL dont pick the team or make the subs
yes they have both made mistakes , but they have provided a fantastic sqaud
and yes i think ED and many others are clueless, but i know for a fact that its not a whole geordie nation as you say,
For ED its about his blog page , crazy headlines get ppl ti visit,
like i say , worse stats than jfk in a relegation season, and he still gets backing
you know what , i could understand it more if the team wasnt backed by the crowd on match days, but every week they are,
you can look at the players for there part or the manager but both poit to the manager not doing his job
training , tacktics , or motovation, all lacking

Comment #40Unfortunately I think IF Pardew was going to be sacked it would have been done by now.
Mike is obviously giving him the benefit after 1 over-achieving season and one almost catastrophic season-which you could arguably understand on balance but if it was my money I would have got shot immediately after the Arsenal game.
We all saw enough of Pardews’ clangers this season to show he is out of his depth here and we need to change to move on.
Stability is fine and all that but there’s nothing stable about fighting against relegation with a squad capable of fighting in Europe (“God help us” in Pardew’s own words).
I find some solace in the fact that Pardew WILL be sacked if next season goes anything like this one and probably quite soon but by then it might be too late to persuade some of our star players that NUFC is where their futures lie.
Do we wish Pardew has a crap season again just to get shot of him? Or do we hope he has a great season and look forward to another 6 years of his stewardship?
Damned if we do and damned if we don’t eh?
