Hammers Agree £15M Fee For Carroll – Too Much For Newcastle

7:33 pm, Tuesday, May 21st, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 389 Comments

News is coming through that West Ham have agreed to pay £15M to sign Liverpool striker Andy Carroll.

andy carroll west ham

Andy Carroll – he’s not worth £15M

We reported this morning that West Ham were in negotiations with Liverpool and the next step would be to agree the fee, and once that was agreed Newcastle would decide whether to bid for their former striker.

Bur we think West Ham are overpaying for the England forward, by about £5M, and he’s simply not worth £15M and therefore we’d be surprised if Newcastle now move for their former striker.

Sam Allardyce had made the signing of Andy his top priority for the summer, as he had this a couple of days ago:

“It is our target to make it a permanent situation,” he said. “Hopefully we can get somewhere in the near future to do that.” “It’s our main priority. There are negotiations between the club and Liverpool.”

Liverpool will still make a loss of £20M on the player in two and a half years – but on the other hand £15M is still a big fee for Andy – given his form since he left Newcastle.

We think the Hammers are overpaying for Andy, but then again they paid out £10.75 last summer to sign former Wolves winger Matt Jarvis, and he’s not worth anywhere near that amount.

It seems that English players cost an awful lot of money these days – given their skill level.

We would be surprised if Newcastle are interested in Carroll at that price.

Let us know if you would sign Andy for £15M

Should Newcastle Sign Andy Carroll for £15M?

    Nice money for Ashley then,

The worst two seasons in history under Ashley.

Well we dodged a bullet there.

At least that’s hopefully finished so we can move on and have some decent targets this window.
He’s great in the air and a nuisance but he’d be in the papers for the wrong reasons too often if he moved back

So now hopefully the Carroll coming back to Toon is finaly over.i dont give a toss weather he signs for WHU or any other club for that matter, now Mr Ashley make us all happy by getting rid of Pardew & appoint a coach who will really move our club forward.

  • 17 jdizzle // May 21, 2013 at 7:45 PM

Ashley almost spent £17M on Luuk De Jong last summer so he is capable of spending that kind of money.

However, this once again proves how over priced english players are…there are much cheaper alternative whom of which are better than AC

it’s so easy to ‘almost spend’ money…i almost bought a 30,000 merc but didn’t/

Ashley can say what he likes but if he doesn’t spend the money to bring in top players then we will be 6/7th at best.

Not that I am aware of, pretty sure he hasn’t. Hopefully he has a style that would pass pretty seamlessly into the prem league, or at least be able to adapt quickly.

I can’t but help some people look at what could be with the players we have, to be honest you don’t know and can only ever presume. What can be said is those players are capable of playing better football in a better manner, we know that because we have on occasion kept possession and passed the ball well. If you can get a manager do that and have some end product it would be better than what we don’t have at the moment. under Pardew. I don’t think you can say we have a top 10 or top 6 team because every team needs a bit of luck, look when we finished 5th some of those goals Cisse was scoring week in week out most players would score once a season.

Carrol is a far better footballer than he’s given credit for, but under Pardew we all know what style we’ll play

  • 45 Bite Eat 11 + 4 - 5 + 15 // May 21, 2013 at 8:15 PM

Carroll is a good footballer but there are much better on the ground for less than half that price.

There are very few better in the air but if we want a good header of the ball we could sign another decent player good in the air for a fraction of the price.

AC is not worth 15 million.

Not when we could get 3 players for that.

  • 46 NUFC STEVE // May 21, 2013 at 8:15 PM

Alot of people forgetting a huge fact. When Carroll left Llambias said that it was because Carroll handed in a transfer request. Carroll then ran to the papers the next day and basically called Llambias a liar and said he and Ashely forced him out. Ashely and Llambias won’t forget that??

funny how Ed says english players are just too expensive these days hahahaha eventhough WE sold him for 35 million haha and to be honest i think Andy is worth 15 million. he is a game changer. centre backs hate playing against him, hes got good feet, hes not just a target man eventhough he is the best target man around plus more. Just their will be no more business between us and liverpool anytime soon because of it haha.
feel sorry for Andy as well because he didnt want to leave.
Will we still get a 25% sell on fee?

  • 51 Unbelievable Tekkers // May 21, 2013 at 8:15 PM

  • 57 Le Belfast 007 // May 21, 2013 at 8:17 PM

Look if Carroll really wants to come back, we’ll get him cheaper than 15 million. Liverpool need to offload him & if he tells Liverpool he’s not interested in going to West Ham that puts us in the driving seat.

But I think he’ll go to West Ham for the cash, to be honest.

  • 58 Abu Qatada - more popular in Europe (and lasted longer) than Pardew // May 21, 2013 at 8:18 PM

I think we need a couple of good centre backs tosay we’re a top ten team for sure, the ones we have are ok and Saylor has been ok this year and shown some signs of maturing but if you play possession football at least one of centre backs needs to show a bit more pace, Mbwia is quick but I think he needs another season IMO. once you have that we can build on wingers and up front. That said when it comes to centre midfielders we must have one of the best groups to choose from on the league, I also think its a shame Obertan was never given a real shot up front, he’s crap as a winger but the boy could move and finish to a degree. I concede the fact Fergie never saw a striker in him and not many people can criticise him! but he never had the lack of resources we’ve struggled with this season. just a thought really but there again I would have dropped Cisse a long time ago and started with Gouffy up front so what do I know…

    On Montepellier.

They had players coming in that failed to reach the potential of the ones that left and their star players didn’t make it a welcome environment by stating they didn’t want to be there anymore.

Add to that a crazy outspoken owner slagging everyone off and Rene Girard did well to keep it all together and finish top 10.

They fell away for sure but we have utterly capitulated.

What’s more they stuck to a level of football they believed in, we have just followed through with Alan’s ethos of hit and hope.

Andy Carroll is a waste of victuals
Reckon Dalglish paid 35 mill out of guilt for wrecking our team!

Nice little bonus if that sell on clause is accurate.

Even if i wanted AC back i think the bindippers would rather have him in their reserves than take a huge loss and subsequent humiliation by selling him to us.

If Colo goes i feel Mbiwa should get the armband, looks a cool customer, showing all the attributes, and with a good preseason under his belt should really kick on next season. That’s providing Mbiwa stays of course!

Does anyone actually know what happened regarding the Colo wantaway fiasco?

Di Canio might win this one though.

The PFA are a union bound to support players but they might not have a leg to stand on if they’ve broken club rules.

All Paulo will do is ship out who he doesn’t want and bring in players who will work for him.

There is an equal chance that the wheels will come off but were currently unicycling along.

We are pretty rubbish at corners aren’t we but that defending and attacking to be fair were poor at winning a corner but were not to bad at conceding a corner.

To all those people saying we played good counter attacking football last season I honestly thought we were average at best, some of the goals we scored were phenomenal but we would never do that again. Some of the decisions we got were fortuitous and whilst I’m not knocking it I enjoyed the board never built on that team and Pardew has massively under manged what he did have.

That said if Liverpool do sell Carroll that will be approx 57.5% off (depending on actual figures)! Mike Ashley doesn’t offer that in some of his stores.

Young (23), physical player who scored 31 goals this season. Very similar player to Christian Benteke.

Agree with hot dog. Whether its 11 or 15 that could work out cheap if hes stays for 10 years. No one had a problem with a target man when it was an ageing shearer. Doesnt have to be banged long. Andy can hold it up on the ground and bring players in, allowing us to get out of our half and actually into the oppositions. He hasnt scored too many this season but the fact west ham fans and owners are desperate to keep him gives you an idea of his value. I would defo take him back and cisse would thrive playing off him imo. By the way lads can we refrain from the insults whenever anyone says anything that can be interpreted as backing pards. Managers we should get:

    Benitez

Ibrahimovic is much better on the ground than many smaller players and infinitely so than Andy Carroll.

A common misconception from fans who don’t watch enough football to warrant an opinion on his style think he’s a target man.

He’s decent in the air but nothing special and like Berbatov prefers the ball into feet.

You may as well compare Adam Campbell and Ibrahimovic.

PSG don’t play hoof ball and hoof ball is the the simplest way of playing the game.

As I touched upon earlier, good players get lazy with a target man and shit players have an outlet.

I think Pardew has been weakened by the West Ham / carroll business. i f we wanted Carroll at 15 mill we could get him, and perhaps not buy many others in the summer. With the Europa League not an issue, Ashley will be hoping fitness isnt such as issue . He’s be wrong of course, because it may be the training regime that is hurting the players. Either way , Pardew would LOVE Carroll, and if we dont go for him, it may be a sign that Ashley has lost faith in Pardew and doesnt want a player that another manager will not want. Personally I’d take Carroll all day long at 15 mill.

Only a gamble from a lesser league who might hit it off- but might not. At least we know andy can do it in the prem. 12m is about the going rate for a young but proven england international striker imo. How much did the mackems pay for connor whickham? Genuinely does anyone know sure was nearly 10m???

    Hotdog

I’m not saying Carroll is crap on the ground, not at all, he’s actually good but Ibra is on another level.

Carroll is a target man who happens to be good on the ground.

Ibra is a genius on the ground who happens to be 6″ 4″.

Their styles are different and how teams would set up to utilise their strengths would differ too.

If we signed Carroll we’d see Cabaye become Nolan, Benny become Barton and M’bwia become Williamson.

We are supposed to be going forwards not backwards or sideways.

  • 162 Big Pappa Cissé // May 21, 2013 at 9:12 PM

There are a couple of ways to utilise a target man:

    1) You just lump it up field like Stoke at every opportunity and hope the striker can score himself or knock the ball on and create chances for others. This is how Pardew would and has used target men, look at Ba’s goal against Man U at home last year. Big punt from Krul, Shola flick on & Ba finish.

    2) You use flying wingers that can beat their man and cross it along the floor or in the air. Just look at Bayern. They use Ribery & Robben to cross to Mario Gomez who scores for fun.

If we could line up something like this:

    —————-Sissoko—————Cabaye——————-

    ——Mertens————–HBA—————-Sinclair——

    —————————–Carroll——————————

Then it could work. But we have seen Pardew’s constant use of Gutierrez out wide so we know he doesn’t really utilise the wings as he should. And that is one thing I have noticed, we very rarely score goals from crosses out wide like the Solano & Shearer days.

    Thoughts ?

Bayern Munich play with a big striker up front and they don’t play hoof football.

This idea that you need to play tipy tapy football with midgets all over the pitch is going by the way side now.

Its exactly why Barcelona couldn’t compete in the Champions League and why Germany will dominate the Champions league for the next few seasons.

You need pace down the wings and when in the box who can score.

My thought is that would be a truly shocking waste of a talented squad, Carroll is not a clinical finisher, he’s proved that since he left us infact at one stage he had the lowest shots to goals conversion rate in the league
I’d take the out of form cisse over the rare uninjured on form Carroll any day, and that’s saying slot as I wouldn’t mind seeing cisse upgraded

Why do people choose to only pay attention to the six months he played for us in the league over the 2 and half seasons he’s played elsewhere and looked at best average

Agreed mate. The new french guys like sissoko will see the commitment and courage of andy and it will motivate and inspire them to replicate it. We are a little soft as a team imo, summed up by no goals from corners. Half the team barely bother to contest headers. Sissoko runs in the opposite direction and hes a beast. He would shame them into getting stuck in i reckon. The fans would soon come around as they always love a 100 percenter.

As for Bayern they had a top manager in my eyes who has the vision of the game so they can play the style of football you are speaking of. Pardew will never be on that level even with the talent we have these lads look lost! cant pass cant cross so how does a striker score when he cant get the delivery? I do think carroll had a good season for west ham but there are better strikers out there look at Michu 2 million pounds son 2 million pounds quality all over the park. Their best forward is Dutch.

They have French and Brazilian fullbacks, Ecuadorian winger, and some incredibly over rated English players filling up the numbers.

  • 202 Munster Mag // May 21, 2013 at 9:28 PM

We domt have to play hoofball to have Carroll. We can mix it up. Also would be a great impact sub, and defenders HATE him. Also if we keep the lovely Alan as boss, there’s no point buying more Anita’s . He has to be able to go with his own team and his own transfers. If he let loose his shackles 20% , we could actually go 442 or 433 ( both with Carroll ) , with decent wingers and be a solid mid table outfit. I think Pardew is rank, but there’s no point keeping him and enslaving hin to Carr’s choices, which are not all they are cracked up to be anyway.

Not sure how Cisse not being great with Ba means he wont work with AC? Ba and cisse both wanted to lead the line, and when they played together one was always on the wing with the other a lone striker. Nothing there to suggest he wouldnt work with AC in a 442 as AC playes deeper, is better at holding up the ball and less selfish. If you were Cisse which one would you want to play alongside?

Obviosly if Pardew goes then we need need a manager that actually knows what kind of player he likes a manger than can get Graeme Carr and the Board to buy into his ideas and scout players the manager actually wants.

Even for Pardew getting players you understand would make a difference.

It’s not a fact that we wouldn’t have seen that performance. When things don’t go right it’s the first thing that people do:

    Blame the foreigners.

Taylor was playing in the derby and he’s a Geordie bred boy. Shola, the “Mackem Slayer” was on at HT, and Elliott was in goal when Krul got injured.

All three of those players put in as bad a performance as our “foreign” boys.

I’m not saying it’s racist, but you’re treading a fine line by blaming poor performances on account of someone’s nationality.

Carroll can hold the ball and allow play to develop. Trouble is we cannot retain possession in the opposition’s half. Carroll would allow this. It is too simplistic to say Carroll’s only strength is his ability on the air. His hold up play is excellent as is his knack of creating space for other players to work in. Worth £15m in my book.

You have some with a year or two experience, others with 3-5 years, then some 5-10 then finally 10+ years. Thats why they always compete, they have plenty of players who know the league and they can really help the new boys settle much quicker.

Stoke don’t play a British style of football…there is no such thing as a British style of football and there hasn’t been for 30 years.

You either play effective football or ineffective football….and you can find a style of play around that.

You can’t categorise football styles now by nationality as because of the volume of players moving between countries it simply doesn’t exist anymore.

  • 293 OhSholaAmeobi // May 21, 2013 at 10:08 PM

Look ameobi and lovenkrands scored a plethora in the championship. Carroll did well when we first came up due to a variety a things, mainly the good spirit of the squad in general (thanks to Hughton, english core) and the fact we had two good crossers (Barton and Enrique) and a supportive midfielder (Nolan). Right now we have none of those and played some godawful football this year that never looked like improving.
You cant just assume Carroll will succeed under Pardew hoofball. Blinded by the fact he’s a geordie and English. I don’t really care if the players we have aren’t English as long as they’re good and can play good technical football, let’s not delude ourselves, there are very few talented English footballers and I’d much rather have quality foreigners, even if you think it’s the cheap option.
Aubameyang would be a far better use of 12-15m as well as being younger, quicker and better technically than Carroll. Just because he’s a geordie does not make him liable to do well – just look at shola, who has supposedly similar attributes to Carroll. If we really want to improve we have to buy players of high quality, not just because they have the club at their heart. Its a sad state of things but do you think man city players really care for the club – yet they’re successful.
All of this is just my opinion but we can do better, I’m not deluded enough to expect Europe all the time but at least it would reaffirm ambition in players like Ben Arfa and Cabaye if we bought in quality.

Hmmm, being a little bit selective in my reasoning. I didn’t pinpoint Rooney specifically as Man United’s least technically gifted player.

I actually happen to think that Rooney is a very valuable player for Man United. He scores goals, and works hard, but is he as technically gifted as Hernandez who rots on the bench behind Rooney and Welbeck?

In my opinion, he is nowhere near as technically able as Hernandez, not even in the same stratosphere, yet he is on the field, because he works hard and is a versatile foil upon which RVP can score goals.

I agree I don’t think carroll is worth 15mil…he would do a job but we can do much better.

Benteke cost villa 7 mil…he hold the ball up, is good in the air (not carroll good though but gets enough goals) but mainly he is much better on the ball and scores much more types of goals.

although to be fair to carroll he does have some nice little tricks/shifts of the ball in the box to get his shot away….he’s not just a target man but for 15mil there are more complete players.

I’d much prefer to do that, grow our own good players like villa and Southampton do, and get a style of football going at all levels. Sadly it isn’t feasible to buy English from other teams unless you can pick out the odd gem like Westwood at villa. I wouldn’t mind us trying to sign mceachran mind, and get gosling/abeid on their bike.

Interesting that you mention Mandzukic and Gomez, both of whom are very limited players in their technical ability, yet they both score an insane amount of goals.

Carroll would score goals for fun playing for Bayern Munich, not because of anything he would bring to the table, but purely on the basis that Bayern Munich create such an embarrassment of riches in terms of chances created.

    2. Pardew states how pleased he is with Carrolls return and confirms he expects to see out the full term of his contract.
    3. Ashley confirms Pardew job is safe for as long as he wants it.

I wouldn’t mind a team of no english players but as long as a good few of them had experience in the league, you just need players who know the league and how to handle situations…same with any league.

Hernandez was happy, at 24, to be the new Solskjaer for Fergie. He could do a Tevez and get frustrated to sit on the bench, and we don’t know how any of these players will react to being on the bench under Moyes.

Well thats exactly the crux of it, you need to create chances no matter who you have up front.

We could sign Van Persie and without the right team around him he’d struggle.

Carroll would be a huge player again for Newcastle.

At the end of the day I want Pardew gone, would pay to watch the football Wigan play each week despite them going down..Martinez all the way for me.,

Fergie could do that, we need to see what moyes does. The advantage they have though is that if he wants out, they sell then just buy a better player…got the money to do it.

We’ll just have to see what happens I guess.

The reason I’d be very against signing Carroll is because I see it as an attempt to bypass our inability to create chances by lumping the ball to him from corners and free kicks.

Carroll is decent with his feet, but I think if Pardew signed him, he wouldn’t be used in this way. I also think that if he is the sort of player Pardew is looking to sign, then there are better options available for half the money that is being touted.

The only thing is that they are foreign.

I don’t want us to sign a Carroll-type player at all though because I am afraid how Pardew would use him.

  • 366 solano // May 21, 2013 at 11:06 PM

I keep reading utter hor$hite from more than one contributor that we have one of the “best squad ever.”
Really?? I’m afraid we’ve been mediocre/dross for so long that we have forgotten what a truly class player is – and we don’t have that many in our TEAM, never mind squad. Take Cabaye, HBA and Colo away (and they may all leave this summer) and you have a squad which is prime relegation material.
When even people like Steve Howey and Lee Ryder realise how flawed our recruitment policy is and how limited in ambition the club and its fans are, it’s incredible how deluded some are on here.
Patsy really should have done better from February onwards, but we were totally lacking for 5months before that.We have been re-invented into the new Sunderland and I’m afraid to say, most people sat back and watched it happen with no more than a shrug of the shoulders.

    Solano,

I agree completely with that argument.

Before January we barely had a squad and with the injuries sustained it ruined our season. And from January onwards we have five people in who can’t speak english haha. They did ok though.

Lack of fire power played a huge part in the final position in the league. God behold if Cisse had took a knock.

Spoof…your long comments on an earlier thread re: Ashley and Pards are near enough spot on.
Pardew and his tenure at NUFC is the very definition of the word Patsy.
It’s incredible on here how paradoxical some people’s positions are, when they shout for the sacking of the manager and then state how well Ashley is doing and how committed they are to his ‘plans’. The fact is, he has said nothing directly about his plans for the club, merely used his two stooges to spin a web of doublespeak and lies.

Wanting rid of Pardew and wanting Carroll is not hypocritical at all.

Could AC ever play for Bayern….without doubt yes.

I’m going to say you’re still at school and possibly didn’t see Carroll first time round because you were too young because theres no other explanation for a narrow minded view that he can’t play modern football.

  • 381 Toon-Prodigy // May 21, 2013 at 11:37 PM

Can’t say I’d want Carroll back. I’v always had the same opinion on the lad.

If we are going to shell out 10-15 mil on a striker we need goals in return for that. My opinion, sadly, I can’t ever see Andy Carroll hitting 15-20 goals a season for the Toon.

Pardews future is going to be decided on this striker alone I reckon, if we don’t bring goals to this team we will struggle up until Christmas.

Maybe if they have a McClaren lined up, we could embark on another ‘5year plan’ though? That would please the lemmings that love a bogus plan, at least-they get the sacking they crave and Mike ‘has tried his best again.’

Never mind, its always been like this, you sort of get used to it after a while.

I was intrigued by Bob Moncur’s description of Ashley’s agitation on Sunday, and that statement that he never wanted to go through another season like this again.
Was he really sweating blood, and if so, why? I can think of good reasons why he might be thinking about getting out in a year or two. He’s become such a bogey figure, people credit him with all kinds of devious genius. But whatever he’s making, it is small change compared to his other stuff. SD can’t seem to get a decent headline out of it for love nor money. He might just be looking get his money back and to wash his hands of it. He’d make a very plausible Pilate.

  • 385 solano // May 21, 2013 at 11:48 PM

Spoof, a growing number of us now though – there’s only a few who are “waiting until the end of the next transfer window’ to make up their minds about Ashley.”
A look at the latest editions of the fanzines, may indicate that the tide is eventually turning and time is against these dicks in charge of the club. A good healthy drop in season ticket sales would also send a message to them.
