Newcastle United have sent a strong squad to try to retain the HKFC Citibank International Soccer Sevens title this weekend, and included in the squad are Sammy Ameobi and James Tavernier, who have both played for the first team.
James Tavernier – will captain the side in Hong Kong
This is the squad that we have sent to Hong Kong, with James Tavernier the captain of the side:
Jak Alnwick, Bradden Inman, Sammy Ameobi, James Tavernier, Paul Dummett, Remie Streete, Rolando Aarons, Michael Richardson, Conor Newton, Steven Logan
Newcastle won all of their six games at the Soccer Sevens on their debut last year, and we won the final by beating Aston Villa 2-1 in the Cup final.
This is what coach Willie Donachie had to say:
“We arrived not expecting too much as we had a very young and inexperienced team,” “But we surprised everyone and went on to win the competition. It proved to be a fantastic experience for all of us and provided many benefits to our young players.”
“Playing against the best is how you learn and coming up against the likes of Manchester City and Aston Villa will really grow these lads as players.”
“More importantly they will grow as people. Seeing Hong Kong, a different culture, spending time at a nice hotel with teammates all helps create unity and togetherness. That’s the beauty of football.”
Adan Campbell is not in the squad because he’s been selected for the England U20 provisional squad for the World Cup in Turkey in late June and July, along with Gael Bigirimana.
Brad Inman had a good loan spell at Crewe Alexandra and he scored 8 goals in 25 appearances, and helped Crewe win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley.
And Conor Newton has just returned from a very successful loan spell at St, Mirren where, along with Paul Dummett, he helped St. Mirren win the Scottish League Cup.
Manchester City have entered the tournament and are making their tournament debut, and five-time winners Aston Villa return, along with Sunderland, Leicester City and Scottish side Rangers.
