Can Newcastle Sign Top Arsenal Defender?

10:35 am, Thursday, May 30th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 116 Comments

Alan Pardew has said he wants to bring in a goal-scoring center-back this summer, so we wonder if Newcastle may be targeting Thomas Vermaelen, whom Arsenal will let go this summer.

Thomas Vermaelen

Thomas Vermaelen – available this summer

Thomas was the captain at Arsenal, but surprisingly lost his place this season, after some poor performances for the London giants, and now Arsene Wenger is willing to let him go this summer.

Not surprisingly, top clubs like Manchester United and Napoli are said to be interested in the 42 times capped Belgium International.

Vermaelen started his career at the famous Ajax Academy ten years ago, and eventually played 114 times for Ajax with 14 goals.

He joined Arsenal in 2009 for a fee said to be around £10M, and was made the Arsenal captain last summer, after Robin van Persie left for Manchester United.

There’s no doubt Vermaelen would be a great acquisition for Newcastle, but unfortunately these days we just cannot compete with clubs like Manchester United and Napoli for these top players.

If we had another top six finish this season, maybe we could – but finishing 5th bottom in the Premier League doesn’t make Newcastle an attractive club to join for a player as good as Vermaelen – that’s the unfortunate truth.

So there’s probably no way Newcastle can get the 6′ center-back to Tyneside.

The Belgium International played 129 times for Arsenal with 15 goals.

Realistically, how much would Vermaelen cost to sign ?

    Top defender

  • 2 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 10:38 AM

Of course we’re only after 1 first team striker. People who think we’re after two are completely mad. We already have Cisse, Goofy, Ameobi, Ben Arfa, other Ameobi and Campbell to play in those forward positions. Plus Obertan and Sissoko at a push.

The player that we need will depend on the formation that Pardew wants to play. I don’t see us attracting a top striker to be rotated with Cisse, so either he’s got to get a striker who can play upfront with Cisse, or he’s got to get a more flexible forward player who can play upfront, as a support striker or out wide with Cisse as the focal point.

  • 5 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 10:39 AM

We also can’t sign Messi, Ronaldo, Bale, RvP etc. so what is the point of this article?

  • 6 RonVanDam // May 30, 2013 at 10:41 AM

You mentioned Brown Ideye in one of your post. I hope we get him. Very pacey, powerful and fluid player. On the plus – he knows the offside rule lol

  • 7 Rainrix // May 30, 2013 at 10:42 AM

Would like him but realistically he isnt tall enough. Only 6 ft not 6ft 4″. Common knowledge that its impossible to score at set plays without someone at or over that height. Sorry thomas!

  • 8 Markaccus // May 30, 2013 at 10:42 AM

Short answer to this…… no. He will go elsewhere. Pointless even thinking any more about it.

  • 9 Markaccus // May 30, 2013 at 10:45 AM

Any more news on thay bojan krkic thing? I remember a few issues of PES ago he was a really good player 😀

  • 10 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 10:46 AM

Rainrix – is that a serious post or are you taking the Owen?

  • 11 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // May 30, 2013 at 10:46 AM

I don’t think Arsenal sell players on the cheap 😉

Anyways we have alot of fringe players we need to be making a decisssion about this season (personally I think last season proved that when called upon in the heat of an injury crisis they weren’t good enough)!

Realistically we are going to have a 22-23 size first team squad and everything else will be youngsters. And those youngster need to be better than those we have right now!

    Sarf… Deadly serious 😐

Nah im referring to a interview pards did that was mentioned yesterday.

“It’s all well and good saying that the set play problem is down to tactics, delivery, whatever. Ultimately you need (players of) six-foot four (inches) to go and head it in, or at least make first contact.
“We haven’t had that all year and it means all our wins have been one-goal wins, apart from Wigan and Southampton.

  • 14 Markaccus // May 30, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Jesper…. i think we should fill the few remaining senior places with established ‘purples’. We need the full 25 otherwise we will be in the same mess with regard to player shortage and lack of experienced back up.

  • 15 geordie@bergen_norway // May 30, 2013 at 10:54 AM

If we are to raid other PL-clubs we should be realistic and look at the clubs below top 5 like Fulham, Liverpool, WBA, Swansea, Everton.
Players like Shane Long, Joe Allen, Kevin Mirallas, Michu, De Guzman, Martin Skrtel.
To aim higher than that is a waste of time imo.

  • 16 Abdhammed // May 30, 2013 at 10:56 AM

    I don’t know also

  • 17 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 10:58 AM

Rainrix – oh dear…the poor guy should keep his mouth shut too often because people are bound to pick up on these comments!

Yes, it’s tough to score from corners when they’ve got 2 or 3 massive blokes in the box and you haven’t but it’s not impossible!

Saylor used to chip in with a few, what’s gone wrong? Before Carroll, who was in the box of 6’4″ it above? Shearer got quite a few top, and he wasn’t that tall!

  • 18 Indian Magpie // May 30, 2013 at 11:00 AM

Pardew to keep his mouth shut?

    That ship has sailed

  • 19 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 11:02 AM

There is only one even remotely possible addition to the first team squad this summer and that will be a striker. Every single other signing will either be a replacement or one for the development squad.

Fans that are dreaming of the 5/6 signings we could make to challenge the top 4 are just setting themselves up for disappointment.

  • 20 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // May 30, 2013 at 11:02 AM

Mark…25 is a large number don’t you think? That means realistically someone would have to be third choice!

…for me that is where the youngsters fit in. I just don’t think our youngsters are good enough.

We need a first team where you cannot pick that starting 11 that easy I think and you need a flexible squad :-) so you can make it interesting from time to time (I know this is not Pardew bag so to speak 😉 lol)

Indian – I don’t know how many of his comments are taken out of context, but he’s hardly helping himself!

He sounds like half of the people on this forum to be honest…”we need to”, “we can’t” etc.

  • 23 Munster Mag // May 30, 2013 at 11:07 AM

Toondarnsarf, pardew blames his lack of scoring from dead balls solely on laxk of height. Obviously nothing to do with training, drills, delivery of movement , inventiveness etc. Pardew is Souness Mk2 although I much prefer him to Souness….

  • 24 Rainrix // May 30, 2013 at 11:07 AM

Sarf… I know, he doesn’t help the stereotype that he makes excuses all the time, or the one where he doesn’t know what he’s doing. :)

Surprisingly a lot of people seemed to have missed that interview. Lucky for him i guess.

  • 25 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 11:10 AM

Jesper – I completely agree with you. No way are we going to have 25 outright first team players. There’s no way we could keep them all happy, not even the top 4 manage that.

2 in every position would be great, the rest of the 25 can be young up and coming players as you’ve said.

  • 26 Markaccus // May 30, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Jesper. Yes it is a big number, but i would fill it as follows…. 2 players in each position plus 3 utility players for emergencies (in our case you could say Perch, Ryan Taylor and Jonas). Cant see many objecting to those players only getting the odd game 😀

  • 27 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 11:14 AM

I think it’s a matter of communication with Pardew. Most of us would agree that it would certainly help to have a big lad in the box for a corner. Someone of Carroll’s ability will get his head on most balls, and if he doesn’t then he’s taken away a big defender or two who are watching him.

But we don’t “need” that to score corners, it just helps a lot.

  • 28 JAMSHA // May 30, 2013 at 11:14 AM

as i know he rejectd juventus… so why would he sign for us

  • 29 Slank // May 30, 2013 at 11:14 AM

I think Vermaelen would be an ideal replacement for Colo as he is very similar to Colo in that they are both very experienced, calm, play the ball out intelligently and read the game exceptionally well but both need a big lump as a partner eg Saylor, Williamson.

However, from what I have seen so far of Yanga-Mbiwa I feel he could easily replace Colo in a year or two when he is fully acclimatised to our premiership.

  • 30 JAMSHA // May 30, 2013 at 11:16 AM

im still thinkng who we would sighn… only one think comes in mind c.cole

  • 31 Markaccus // May 30, 2013 at 11:16 AM

Toondarnsarf…. i agree it would be hard to keep outright first teamers happy, but when i say 2 for each position i mean the back up player just needs to be experienced and solid, without necesarily being first choice. He has to challenge for the place to keep the no1 on his toes, but the best teams have 2 players for each role, often with slightly different styles to allow more defensive/attacking approaches depending on what each game requires.

  • 36 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Markaccus – but we’re not one of the best teams…:-(

If we want to get into the top 6, then any player good enough to be the backup that you describe would have to be an experienced player who would get into the first team in the bottom half of the table. They’re better off playing for one of those teams. The reason the CL teams can do that is the sheer number of games, they know they will get the easy CL games, cup games, and some of the easier PL games too.

What we need is for the likes of Bigi, Fergie, Sammy etc. to push the first teamers.

  • 39 TorqToon // May 30, 2013 at 11:25 AM

Jamsha – yes sir, I believe we are. Said last week that we had progressed with our approach for the player. He will surely have more offers than just us…but you never know in football.

  • 40 croftus5678 // May 30, 2013 at 11:26 AM

i’ll be very happy with a top striker and winger if we keep arfa/collo but if any of those 2 go we need decent replacements also.

personally i dont see tiote hitting form again and value bigi/anita/perch/sissoko for that possition so i would not kick up a stink if a 7mil+ was accepted (besides i want to see bigi in the england team and only way that will happen is with 1st team apps)

arfa is way more valuable to us imo as we have no one else at the club who can get us going like he does (only winger we have who can cross) but 20mil+ could see 2 very good wingers heading our way any lower than that is not worth its value to our team imo

collo again needs to be kept at all costs every new foreign player we get needs time to settle and collo is the best defender we have had since woodgate ! i would not think twice about trading saylor/williamson for a 31yo collo if his contract has years left to run on it then happy or not we should make him play out the rest of it he has to play well to get a contract at another club when he does leave and by then mbiwa will have learnt.

  • 41 Indian Magpie // May 30, 2013 at 11:26 AM

    Use Colons

  • 42 Chris Waddle // May 30, 2013 at 11:28 AM

Don’t see why we shouldn’t at least attempt it I heard rumours of £6 million which has to be worth a pop I think everyone knows Newcastle is a footballing city which is passionate about all things football related – it’s a great chance to become part of a long term footballing project – you could even make him captain for added incentive. I would attempt to go for Skrtel too big strong defender tough to get past wouldn’t cost the earth and has prem experience. I know I’ll get shot down but I would even consider Chris Samba – we need to be more ugly in defence those types of player combined with Yanga creates a fearsome backline which could also get you a few goals going forward.

Newcastle Utd need to go back to basics for me and that DOESN’T involve sacking the manager!! We need to improve the backroom staff/medical staff etc to be able to bring some fresh ideas and impetus to the club I think the problem is Pardew has John Carver and Steve Stone who just seem to go along with whatever Pardew thinks no one challenges or comes up with new suggestions which can help take us forward or change a game.

In my opinion a few decent additions to the backroom staff combined with a focus on making the spine of the team more solid and stable and we would be back amongst the top 7 or 8. If you look this season we were only 8 points of 8th and we had a disgusting season!!

  • 43 jayphoto // May 30, 2013 at 11:28 AM

no chance on this lad at toon! To be honest last season he was shocking but he does get a few goals! The only centreback from the premier league I can see us going for/getting is West Hams James Tompkins!Pardew seems to rate him, wouldn’t be my personal choice though! MacAuley at west brom had a fantastic season and would be worth a look at, West Ham’s winston reid is a fine defender also! Both the lads at stoke, shawcross and huth are also very good defenders albeit a bit disliked and unfashionable! These players are no frills but rarely make mistakes

  • 44 Slank // May 30, 2013 at 11:29 AM

    ToonDarnSarf @ 19

I agree and disagree with you!

Yes, we need a striker and yes I don’t see 4/5 first team players coming in. The only other position is an additional centre back, even if Colo doesn’t move on.

However, Shola’s contract expires at the end of this coming season and therefore the club may cash in now and bring in a second striker. It all depends upon how they rate Campbell.

Ideally, the club should have four out and out strikers. At the moment we really only have one, Cisse. Shola is past it. Campbell is untried. Goffy is really a winger. Sissoko is really a midfield player, IMHO. The only other player who could play up front is Ben Arfa but I’m not sure he will be here for very much longer, pity.

  • 45 Rainrix // May 30, 2013 at 11:29 AM

Sarf… I wonder if pardew has gotten it in his head that we can absolutely not score from a corner without a big man and thus doesn’t bother with new tactics or deliveries. No doubt a big man helps as you say but its far from an impossibility.

Our team is relatively large with cisse santon yanga colo saylor jonas all 6ft and over. Then we have players who we know can deliver. By all logic we shouldn’t be as bad as we are at set plays

  • 46 low fell mag // May 30, 2013 at 11:30 AM

At this moment in time I cannot think of any player with
proven class will relish putting pen to paper, to sign for us.
Being more realistic, we will be looking at the clubs who were relegated from the premiership this season or some French cheap imports.
I once knocked Rontanda heights for his glass being half empty and mine half full (how wrong was I ), my glass now feels like it has been left in the Sahara desert for a fortnight.
My main concern is ,not who we are going to sign ,but who is going to leave .

  • 47 tequilamag // May 30, 2013 at 11:32 AM

Re squad size. we have a lot of younger players no longer eligible to play as underage players. We will have 29 players
as things stand as it is even if we bought nobody, I think 25 players will be named at start of season. The bigger problem is shifting players on to make room for more signings. So expect a lot of players to be sent on loan and a few moved on to other clubs. Quantity is not the problem, quality is the real issue.

  • 48 Indian Magpie // May 30, 2013 at 11:36 AM

  • 49 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 11:36 AM

Slank – why would we need 4 out and out strikers when we often only play one of them? Also, Goofy is a striker who has been played out wide as part of a 3 up front, he’s not a winger.

At centre back, we already have Colo, MYM, Taylor and Willo. Unless Colo goes, we won’t sign a top first team centre back. We’ll sign one around 23 if Willo moves on though.

  • 50 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // May 30, 2013 at 11:37 AM

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and how are we all doing on this beautiful day? 😀

On topic, is it just me or does anyone else think that Vermaelen is a poor defender? Yes he had a cracking first season in the 09/10 season, but ever since taking over the captaincy he’s been shocking.

For 90% of a game he could do everything right, but that final 10% is where he completely undoes all his good work, either by playing someone 5 yards onside, a ludicrous back pass, or by simply switching off.

Also, he’d cost at least 10m, so we can forget about him even on that basis.

PS Does anyone find Pardew’s comments about Campbell being “in and around the first team next season” as a signal that we’re not going to get the attacking players we so desperately need?

  • 51 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 11:40 AM

Rain – but in a typical game that means Cisse, Colo and MYM/Saylor in the box for a corner and marked by their 3 tallest (probably taller) players. You’re right, he needs more inventiveness on the training ground to get goals from corners.

I think he’s referring to the easy goals that some clubs get: stick the ball in from the corner and the big lad with a good jump on him will get on the end of it

  • 52 Slank // May 30, 2013 at 11:41 AM

    Rainrix @ 44

It is a puzzle why we haven’t scored from a corner with so many tall players BUT can they head a ball, that’s the question?

The only players who got close (but not close enough this last season!) are Saylor, Williamson, Colo and Cisse. Is it the delivery that’s the problem? I’ve always thought that Marveaux and Ben Arfa should have taken more corners. I also thought that there didn’t seem enough variation.

Corners must be top of Pardew’s ‘must do list’.

  • 53 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // May 30, 2013 at 11:41 AM

I think if Colo moves on, we won’t sign any replacements. I think Ashley will say to Pardew “Perch can play CB, why would we need a replacement, and you’ve got Willo there so just make do”

Remember how long it took for the club to sign MYM? We waited 2 years to sign a CB, how long would it take to replace Colo on that basis?

I’ve lost faith in the owner as having an intentions in ensuring we have a strong squad, he’ll probably make sure we’ve got the numbers going into next season but it will be quantity over quality I fear.

  • 54 jayphoto // May 30, 2013 at 11:43 AM

@ruddy – with you on that, vermaelen is a poor defender! Hes better going forward, which isn’t what you want from a centreback! Mertesacker at arsenal is one hell of a defender, Koscielny isn’t bad either but vermaelen isn’t in their class!

  • 55 WWYCD // May 30, 2013 at 11:46 AM

Campbell is highly rated by all accounts so he should be getting game time (I dont think he will make it but I will happily be proven wrong) that doesnt mean we wont be in the market for more attackers imo

Relax people big long time until the transfer window closes or even really kicks in. We will have targets and maybe even a few tied up already whether it’ll be enough we will only find out next season

  • 56 jayphoto // May 30, 2013 at 11:46 AM

@Torq – got a feeling Belhanda might have a couple of better options than us this summer! Wouldn’t surprise me if Arsenal were interested as he linked brilliantly with Giroud at Montpelllier, set up over 75% of his goals! Heard spurs like him too! He’s a top player, actually rate him higher than HBA because he’s more direct and regularly finds the net or an assist! Same with Boudebouz, strange we’re linked with these players though given all the players we have that play in wide positions

  • 57 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // May 30, 2013 at 11:47 AM

There was a lot of talk about how poor Mertesacker was with regards mobility, and yes he did struggle to settle when he first signed, and he was never a 10m quid defender when he signed, but his power in the air and timing of the tackle is immaculate and he concentrates for the full 90mins which is essential for a CB.

I’ve always been on the fence about Koscielny, but he has had a cracking second half of the season, and was arguably their best player against us, the man was a mountain.

Vermaelen I think has lost his form massively these last two seasons, is an expensive option, and is unlikely to want to leave the comfortability of Arsenal = move on to realistic targets.

  • 58 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 11:48 AM

Ruddy – I definitely don’t agree with you there. Anyone can tell that MYM, Saylor, Willo, Perch is a weakness at centre back. I don’t believe that Ashley would have invested elsewhere and leave that as such an area of weakness.

Also…using pure economics, Colo is on around £70kpw so that frees up a fair amount of money. I don’t believe that he will let him go for free either. If he’s that desperate to go back home, then he can buy himself out of his contract.

  • 59 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // May 30, 2013 at 11:49 AM

Hope you’re right, no doubt we’ll be making a few signings, but I for one will be disappointed if we don’t come out of the transfer window with a shiny new ST and a couple of glossy wingers who can fit straight into the team.

    I’m building myself up for a fall aren’t I?

  • 60 SupaToonKid // May 30, 2013 at 11:50 AM

Just checked out this Lestienne chap that a couple of people have mentioned on the blog. Looks a very tidy player and at only 20. He looks like a young Dries Mertens. Would not mind if we showed some interest in either of those Belgian gems.

  • 61 Slank // May 30, 2013 at 11:50 AM

    ToonDarnSarf @ 48

If we play one up front (Cisse) and he gets injured then there isn’t an ideal replacement. I don’t think we should play with a single striker. Far too often Cisse was isolated and therefore ineffective.

I regret to say I watched ManU recently and was very impressed at how quickly they flooded the opposition penalty area with their players. We haven’t done that. I don’t see Goofy as an out and out striker, it’s a debatable view I suppose.

  • 62 mindshaft // May 30, 2013 at 11:52 AM

Transfer window is still open for another 3 months, can’t imagine players would want to sign for toon this early in window, their agents will obviously be hawking them around other clubs trying to get a better offer.
To be honest I’m already bored of the rumour mill

  • 63 toonarmydownsouth // May 30, 2013 at 11:52 AM

Well vermalen has come out and said he doesn’t want to leave arsenal so I doubt it, surely skertl is the more obvious player ??

Fingers crossed!!! Would love belhanda here

  • 64 jayphoto // May 30, 2013 at 11:52 AM

@WWYCD not sure on campbell, I think his pace gives him a very good chance to make it though! Think the club should be basing his game and development on craig bellamy! I long for the days when we have a striker like him back in the side, used to terrorise defences, would chase every single loose ball and through ball! The thing we lack at the moment, is a striker who leaves an impact on every game! When defenders played against Bellamy, Shearer or even Carroll, even when that player had a bad game, the defender knew he’d been in a battle, for me Cisse and Shola make things far too easy for defenders, it’s one of the reasons id like us to take carroll back, because in every game, even when he’s not playing well and scoring, he makes life difficult for whoever is marking him and he terrifies defences at any set plays! Not to mention im a bit romantic and would LOVE a forward 2 of Carroll and Campbell

  • 65 WWYCD // May 30, 2013 at 11:53 AM

Yes and no mate all depends on how much Ashleys willing to gamble. I think we will spend this summer 20+ I’d imagine purely because of the huge new injection of TV revenue.

I’d expect atleast 1 striker and 1 winger (I have my opinions on who they could be but purely speculative), also have a feeling we will bring in a few under 20s from Belgium/Holland/France

    Time will tell though

  • 66 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // May 30, 2013 at 11:54 AM

Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to think that Ashley wouldn’t see us exposed in such a way, but this is the guy who left us with effectively 2 starting CBs at the start of last season.

Everyone knew Saylor was a walking sick note and that Willo is limited at best, but still we didn’t sign a new CB until last January. We’ve needed another CB since getting promoted (that’s Aug 2011) and we didn’t get one until Jan 2013.

This is also the guy who let us start last season with only 3 senior strikers; Ba, Cisse and Shola, and it was blatantly apparent that Ba and Cisse couldn’t play up top together. We’ve succeeded in selling one of them but still haven’t sufficiently reinforced this glaring weakness in the squad.

And we still have no pacy wingers!

If Colo leaves it might free up wage space, will it be used to improve the squad? I have my doubts.

We all might like to think that Ashley will address the weaknesses in the squad, but history doesn’t give us much in the way of proof for this.

  • 67 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 11:55 AM

Slank – I agree with you there though. But we’re just not going to sign a top striker to be rotated with Cisse. Either it will be an up and coming striker (and could actually be Campbell if he really is that good) or it will be a more flexible player who can play up front on his own or out wide a bit.

That is, unless Pardew wants to go with 2 up front…

  • 68 WWYCD // May 30, 2013 at 11:59 AM

I am very much championing that lad on here haha also know we have scouted him because we played Brugge and we wouldnt of missed identifying him as a threat imo

Id have Carroll back for the same reason mate and I agree Cisse doesnt battle with defenders imo Shola tries but he isnt capable of doing it for a prolonged period of time.

Campbell I agree has speed and some skills which could see him make an impact but after seeing him player a hand full of times I just dont see him being able to produce regularly in the PL but as I said I will happily be proven wrong

  • 69 Rainrix // May 30, 2013 at 11:59 AM

Sarf… A conundrum no doubt, hopefully pardew can garner back some credit by sorting it out over the summer

Slank… I think its a combination of factors really. Our players not being aggressive in the box. Poor delivery. Bad tactics (i.e hoof it to willo at the back post and hope the keeper doesn’t realise he can just pluck it out of thin air.) It needs sorting out regardless. Its a gold mine of potential goals that we just cant capitalise on considering we seem to win more than most in the 1st place.

  • 70 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 12:02 PM

The thing with Ashley is that he’s made it quite clear that he refuses to pay above the odds. A good negotiator has to make it clear that he is prepared to walk away if the deal is not right. I do believe that we were really trying to get a centre back in, and it just didn’t happen. This is the way he does business, and he does business with Newcastle in the same way.

As far as strikers go…I agree with the Ba and Cisse issue, that was just never going to work and I’m not sure what Pardew was trying to do there. Those 3 strikers wasn’t a problem when we only played one up front though.

As for wingers…well if we play Cisse up front and Ben Arfa and Goofy support him on either side then that’s 2 pretty pacey players out wide! We also have Marveaux and Obertan for that role too. I do think we need one more tricky creative player though. Would be nice if Sammy or Fergie could take that role but only time will tell on them.

  • 71 cyprus // May 30, 2013 at 12:05 PM

    Ruddy my ‘friend’,
I can’t agree with ashley saying this, really disagree:

“Perch can play CB, why would we need a replacement, and you’ve got Willo there so just make do”

  • 72 jayphoto // May 30, 2013 at 12:07 PM

remember that Lestienne giving our defence a bit of a torrid time in the europa league last season! Brugge have got Ryan Donk there aswell, always thought he was a decent centreback

  • 73 Slank // May 30, 2013 at 12:12 PM

    Toon @ 66

Like Jap at 63 I too would like to see Carroll and Campbell upfront. It’s that big ‘un and little ‘un combo that has worked so well for so many clubs in the past.

Carroll is a major threat in the penalty that unsettles defences. They know they have been in a game when he is around. Campbell (and others if they got into the penalty area quick enough) would benefit from the chaos Carroll can cause.

  • 74 Cisse's Big Toe // May 30, 2013 at 12:18 PM

lestienne would be an incredible signing, realistic too

and donk played the whole of this season at cdm

  • 75 Jail for Ashley // May 30, 2013 at 12:18 PM

Why could you not see Mashley saying that he’s been saying that since stalwart Sol Campbell left two and a half years ago.

  • 76 WWYCD // May 30, 2013 at 12:21 PM

Jeremain Lens has stated he wants to leave this summer as well and we have been previously linked with him, some say we very nearly signed him, could be that we have him in our sights

  • 77 toonarmydownsouth // May 30, 2013 at 12:22 PM

I’m so glad you’ve said that!! (Not the Carroll part)
I’ve said so many times this season that cisse does not battle with CBs at all he’s marked out of the match with ease you never see him scrambling across the defender of going shoulder to shoulder, he rely’s solely on playing off the shoulder of the last man, which he has done so poorly this season!
We seriously need imo a top cf if we’re to progress, that’s not me saying sell cisse but at the very least bring in some serious competition

  • 78 cyprus // May 30, 2013 at 12:23 PM

I think his purchase of Cisse at 10 mil and then 5 players in Jan is a statement of intent. Surely he can’t be enjoying our games and he’d want to put that right.

  • 79 cyprus // May 30, 2013 at 12:25 PM

I don’t support the guy, it just seems that he’s trying to do things right. Even keeping AP, who does seem to be out of his depth, is a last ditch effort to go for that L-T plan.

Maybe I’m wrong and it’s just his pride at backing the wrong horse.

  • 80 ToonDarnSarf // May 30, 2013 at 12:26 PM

Slank – you’re right…it has worked so well in the past. But that’s the problem really: 4-4-2 worked well in the past but football has moved on. How many teams play that way now? Look at the top4 clubs and they all have dynamic attacking players with lots of movement with the maximum of one out an out striker (players like Hernandez, Torres or Dzeko).

  • 81 Slank // May 30, 2013 at 12:28 PM

    Toon @ 69

Yes, by all accounts that is the way Ashley does business and he is pretty good at it too given the success of Sports Direct.

I think Ashley lays down the strategy and ground rules and tells Llambias, Chanley, Carr, Pardew and others to get on with it.

Contrary to what many fans say and believe I don’t think Ashley gets involved in footballing matters. He possibly is brought in to unblock a stalled negotiation, usually where money is involved.

  • 82 MysteriousStranger // May 30, 2013 at 12:30 PM

Can’t see him wanting to come here to be honest, he’ll have been subject to the British press and will have full realistic view of the Newcastle United situation…..besides all he has to do is watch videos of our matches and Pardew will realise that being 6′ 4″ is not a requirement to score goals from corners, in fact delivery and movement for an attacking team that is opposing a seriously shit defense will prove sucessful. Ask Evra and Evans of Man Utd, ohhh you can also ask our defense infact why doesn’t Pardew actually research who scored corners against us and investigate how they come about scoring rather than just look at height!

  • 83 Jail for Ashley // May 30, 2013 at 12:34 PM

I was almost duped by the 9M signing of Cisse and had just three of those five signing been bought in January I would have seen that as ambitious and possibly changed my views but unfortunately rather than being bought with an intent to aim high it was to stave off the danger of that 70M pot and ruination which we just managed to do on the ultimate game of the season.

  • 84 MysteriousStranger // May 30, 2013 at 12:36 PM

The trouble is with Cisse he can’t hold the ball up, he either shoots first time os passes (not necessarily to a Newcastle player)!. When your having an awful season like the team had and opportunities are at a premium Cisse is not the player you need for a whole game IMO, we’d have been better of with Goofy who is mobile pulls defenders around and hits the channels as well as holding up the ball and generally makes good decisions bringing others into play. Cisse will score but was pretty poor at team play this season.

  • 85 magicbus // May 30, 2013 at 12:37 PM

Pretty pointless really as we wont pay his current wages or anyone else either who come from a top 6 club

  • 88 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // May 30, 2013 at 12:45 PM

Am I to take the word friend being in quotation marks as being laced in cynicism?

Do you not remember last season, when we were in such dire straits over our CB situation that away to Norwich we had to start with Danny Simpson and Santon at CB and we got thrashed 4-2?

This was in Dec 2011, and yet they still didn’t rectify the situation in the January window of 2012, or the summer window of 2012.

So, why exactly are we to expect Ashley to fork out for any much needed improvements for the sake of improving the squad?

I’m with JfA, the only reason Tubbs licked the BBQ sauce off his fingers to sign the cheque for the signings in January was to protect his lucrative TV money next season.

    Mediocrity ensues people.

  • 89 Slank // May 30, 2013 at 12:46 PM

    Toon @ 79

We don’t seem to be one thing or another. Perhaps that’s the problem and possibly a source of confusion with players.

For many games we packed the midfield, often with one and sometimes two defensive midfield players, and still we let in goals but we didn’t score any (or enough) to win.

I saw an interview with a very well known coach (whose name I have now forgotten, may be not so well known!) who said about Sir Alex is that when you faced ManU you knew that there would always be two wingers coming at you and a centre forward in the middle and another forward hovering around.

I have to agree with others who say that Cisse, for all his goal scoring prowess, doesn’t put himself about with the central defenders. It’s not his style. He is a poacher who plays on the shoulder of the last defender. But upfront by himself without adequate support he is ineffectual.

I do feel he needs a physical partner. It may be that we have to change to a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formation to do it.

On intent, I know it’s very easy for a journalist to write what he wants his readers to believe but this is an independent article by a respected newspaper, although it’s two years old what he writes is actually more apparent now than then bar the fact that I now don’t think he would sell for that 300M as were worth too much to his sports shops :

  • 92 WWYCD // May 30, 2013 at 12:53 PM

Would anyone take Abidal at St James’ on a free? He’s experienced, a winner, French (obviously) and always a class act when I’ve seen him play. I’d take him in a heartbeat. The obvious downside is the health issues but presumably we could work something into his contract a la Demba Ba.

  • 102 Sinner // May 30, 2013 at 1:53 PM

If Colo does leave, i hope Pardew takes a look at Adil Rami, top centre back and has an 8m release clause in his contract!

  • 103 Lilongwe Geordie // May 30, 2013 at 1:55 PM

I imagine if you go on just about any other clubs blog then you will see all sorts of rumours. It isn’t just Newcastle. Every other club just goes out and buys players, Fulham have, Hull are in talks, Liverpool with Kolo. Most clubs haven’t conducted any business, and it is still all talk.

If it gets to mid July and we still haven’t done anything feel free to have a rant, but at the minute we are in the same boat as most.

  • 104 Lilongwe Geordie // May 30, 2013 at 2:00 PM

I’m amazed Gosling got any votes!! Would have been interesting to see the full list of players they offered. For example, no one is keeping Campbell, Sammi, Tav, Inman etc. I agree, they wouldn’t be in my top 6 to keep, but if Gosling, Willo, Shola, Perch etc get votes, then how come none of the youngsters did.

  • 105 Big Pappa Cissé // May 30, 2013 at 2:03 PM

My targets to replace Collo would be:

    1. Alderwireld
    2. Aurélien Chedjou
    3. Semih Kaya
    4. Kyriakos Papadopoulos

  • 106 Lilongwe Geordie // May 30, 2013 at 2:07 PM

Alderwield said he wouldn’t sign for us already, Chedjou has already gone to Galatasary, Papadopoulos is supposedly Liverpools number 1 defensive target.

Don’t know the other, but hopefully he is good if that was Carrs list.

I too would have chedjou as a possible replacement for collo aswell as nkoulou, as the are both similar players and still young..ish

As for vermaalen, his wages would probably be sky high aswell as ‘bigger’ clubs such as man utd and city (not a big club) being interested in him

Before people post, they should really ask themselves the following questions:
1 – have you got your information from real life rather than a computer game?
2 – do you genuinely think the player/manager would join us over CL clubs and richer clubs?
3 – do you understand that the club needs to be run as a business?
4 – do you understand that every other club is also trying to get into Europe and win trophies?
5 – do you realise that players, managers and officials can make mistakes just like you can?

Pardew have lots of weakness as a modern football manager but he can deal with youth players. And he does give youth a chance, tbf.

Its the Owner and the current club situation that this club have to stay in this way.

We just got to fight it out with Stoke, Hull and Cardiff next season, doing better than some of these teams will see us safe for yet another season in the top flight.
Which is important for us to hang in there before are get a richer, wiser owner and change the fortune of this club.

The club have just started to balance its books, yet to mention MA loans.

If he’s available, why not at least have a punt and enquire?! But yes, the reality is that if he is available, then there is no chance he’ll be remotely attracted to us! That is the plight we are in! And Wenger has probably just metioned he may be available to get a reaction from the player so he comes back stronger and better next season! Mind games?
