As you may have noticed, the transfer market since the last game of the season has been very slow, and it seems Newcastle have still to put their first bid in for any player – although we expect things to heat up soon.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – was Newcastle’s number one transfer target
And it’s very possible that Newcastle have already moved away from some of their top targets with St. Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as an example, wanted by a number of big clubs other than Newcastle.
And of course we still don’t know where Newcastle will be playing their pre-season games this summer, although Portugal has again been mentioned as a possibility after the club ruled out South Africa, for a second year in a row.
Two years ago at this time we had already signed Yohan Cabaye from Lille, and by June 18th we had also signed Demba Ba and Sylvain Marveaux, both of whom turned out to be good signings for the club.
And last year we had brough in Romain Amalfitano and we were busy trying to get Mathieu Debuchy through the door, but we only signed then 18 year-old Gael Bigirimana, who was an excellent buy from Coventry, and also Vurnon Anita from Ajax last summer, even though we had the Europa League.
And that turned out to be a massive mistake and we paid for it dearly last season when we just avoided relegation and finished 5th bottom of the league, although we did reach the quarter finals of the Europe league before being eliminated by the beaten finalists Benfica.
We assume manager Alan Pardew will return from holiday early next week – so things may start to heat up then – maybe.
