Newcastle were linked with PSV Eindhoven striker Ola Toivonen last summer, and there are claims from PSV there is real interest from other clubs for their 6’2″ striker.
Ola Toivonen – 26 year-old PSV and Sweden striker
Ola has just one year left on his current contract and is looking to leave Holland this summer, and there are reports coming through that Norwich have gone in with a bid for the Swedish striker.
PSV want Ola to sign a new deal, because they will lose him for nothing next summer, or for a reduced fee this summer, and he’s been told he will training with the Juniors next season, if he doesn’t sign a new deal.
We should point out that he has every legal right in the world to see his contract out at PSV, and the player should hardly be subjected to such pressure to sign a new deal – but that’s what happens when real (big) money is involved.
Toivonen has said the fee that PSV want of £4M is too high, and it would seem he would be a decent buy for anything less than that.
Ola said this about the fee:
“The asking price is too high. I’ve said it before and I continue to say it,”
The reports coming out of Holland are that Chris Hughton’s Norwich City have now agreed a fee with PSV, so the Canaries may be in the lead for the striker.
And you have to remember that Chris also bought another potential Newcastle striker target – Sporting Lisbon’s Ricky van Wolfswinkel – when they agreed a deal of £8.5M in early April with his Portuguese side.
PSV technical director Marcel Brands told VI there is interest:
“There is real interest, and also from a number of clubs.”
It would seem that Ola would be a decent buy for the money, and he can play as an out-and-out striker or in midfield, and he scored 10 goals in 26 games for PSV last season and has played 33 times for Sweden with 6 goals.
WE don’t know if Toivonen is a real target for Newcastle this summer, but he would seem to fit the bill as one of the two strikers to be bought into the Tyneside club this summer.
What do you think?

Comment #2He’s not a ‘top’ striker by any stretch of the imagination. We will do well to stay clear of him, if he goes to Norwich I would put money on him getting between 8-12 goals. He’s not one of PSV’s main strikers anymore and nor is he for Sweden. We should look elsewhere.

He was a genius, and like every genius he was desperately flawed, what a character, wonder if we could get him in the show as a guest star!? Haha

You always get straight to the point. No one cares about a single thing you have to say. Even Kets is better value you than you. Even catchy, in his own way, puts things in a better way than you. You’re nothing but a bloody parasite so change the record, offer something more or just bloody p*ss off!

Comment #15Not sure if we were ever interested in RVW and I reckon Norwich will be back in for Hooper rather than this lad. At the min I’d be happy if we would sign an under 16 for the schoolboys so that we would at least know those in power are at work. The silence from the club is deafening.

Will you put down your crack pipe for five minutes lad?
I flick through the comment every day, and there’s always a comment from you mumbling on about Benteke.. It used to be Paul Scharner, now its Benteke.
If you think for one minute that Ashley would dish out what he’d cost, your a lunatic.
If you think we have a chance of signing him, when liverpool see him as a replacement for Suarez, and Atletico are considering buying him with the falcao money, your a lunatic.
He’s not comin here, he’s not comin here.
Make sense or shut up. I know this was unprovoked but Im sick of seein it on every f*****g thread.

I have seen him play up top on his own and at 6″2, he is definitely not just an attacking midfielder, ST/AM(C) would probably define where he plays best. 10 goals in 26 games for an attacking midfielder is also really high, so suggests further he doesnt play that deep

If he goes he’ll go to one if the big boys.
I don’t think we are after this player at all. My guess would be de Jong is our no 1 target this window. Whether we get him is another thing.

Comment #33Ed, you’ve destroyed the meaning of the word “Top”, you missuse it all the time. On the subject of Toivonen: Not good enough, I come from Sweden and know quite a bit about the lad, he is not good enough to succeed in the Premier League.

Comment #34Don’t think Benteke is worth 18 million, 1 good season. Maybe if he can replicate last season you’d be looking at 20 million at least, at the minute 12 million

Comment #36I rate this guy. Not a main striker but one that can fit in tHe hole nicely and pair a smaller pacey one.
Strong in the air. Good link up play and chips in with goals withOut limiting his strike partners chances. Unlike when we had Ba and cisse.

Comment #37Are we in the market for a benchwarmer? OT is deffo not the perfect foil to work with Cisse, nor is he a man that can operate as a lone striker. I would say avoid, unless we are planning for a long term future in the champo.
