The Newcastle Journal is reporting that Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is keen to join Newcastle United this summer, with news breaking last night that Newcastle were (supposed to be) interested in the 29 year-old England striker.
Darren Bent – would he by a good acquisition?
But Darren Bent doesn’t fit the profile of players owner Mike Ashley likes to sign, because his best days are behind him,and his value will hardly increase at Newcastle.
Sources close to the striker have told The Journal he is keen to join Newcastle, but that doesn’t come as any surprise, because Newcastle are a very good club, and take care of their players – and we even play well now and again. 😀
Darren still has England ambitions, and would like to be in the World Cup squad next summer, and with the dearth of good English strikers, we suppose if he plays well next season and scores goals, he’s got some chance, a small chance, of making the squad.
Darren used to play for Sunderland of course, and the Black Cats got a massive transfer fee of anywhere from £18M to £24M for him a short 30 months ago, when he deserted Sunderland in mid-season and joined Villa – so he’s hardly popular at Sunderland.
Alan Pardew has pushed to be able to bring in players with Premier League experience this summer, and we don’t know if he’ll get his way, but maybe a player like Darren Bent, who Alan worked well with at Charlton, is a player Pardew was thinking of, when he said this late last season:
“Whatever players we bring in, somewhere along the line, we need experience.” “We have got a lot of young players with potential now, and we need a little bit of guidance around them to help them, particularly if Coloccini leaves.”
“His position will be quite critical really. If there is a situation where he is not here next year, it is important we replace that experience he has.” “We are losing Harps as well and that’s another source of experience. Shola too, so we might be losing two or three very big senior players.”
“They will all gain from the experience we have had this year, the extra pressure in terms of never really being able to get away from getting sucked into the relegation battle. At one point, after the Sunderland game, we were sucked in. So all of that will make those players stronger.”
The Journal is saying that Villa would be willing to take around £5M for the player, and at that price maybe he could do a job for Newcastle over the next three or four years.
Bent’s wages are said to be a massive £80K a week, and he will not get that much at Newcastle, and we’d think Darren would be willing to take a lower wage to join the Tyneside club.
Let’s assume we can get Bent for £5M and reasonable wages – do you think Newcastle should get him?
