Are Newcastle Really After Darrern Bent?

9:49 am, Wednesday, June 12th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 42 Comments

The Newcastle Journal is reporting that Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is keen to join Newcastle United this summer, with news breaking last night that Newcastle were (supposed to be) interested in the 29 year-old England striker.

darren bent at Villa

Darren Bent – would he by a good acquisition?

But Darren Bent doesn’t fit the profile of players owner Mike Ashley likes to sign, because his best days are behind him,and his value will hardly increase at Newcastle.

Sources close to the striker have told The Journal he is keen to join Newcastle, but that doesn’t come as any surprise, because Newcastle are a very good club, and take care of their players – and we even play well now and again. 😀

Darren still has England ambitions, and would like to be in the World Cup squad next summer, and with the dearth of good English strikers, we suppose if he plays well next season and scores goals, he’s got some chance, a small chance, of making the squad.

Darren used to play for Sunderland of course, and the Black Cats got a massive transfer fee of anywhere from £18M to £24M for him a short 30 months ago, when he deserted Sunderland in mid-season and joined Villa – so he’s hardly popular at Sunderland.

Alan Pardew has pushed to be able to bring in players with Premier League experience this summer, and we don’t know if he’ll get his way, but maybe a player like Darren Bent, who Alan worked well with at Charlton, is a player Pardew was thinking of, when he said this late last season:

“Whatever players we bring in, somewhere along the line, we need experience.” “We have got a lot of young players with potential now, and we need a little bit of guidance around them to help them, particularly if Coloccini leaves.”

“His position will be quite critical really. If there is a situation where he is not here next year, it is important we replace that experience he has.” “We are losing Harps as well and that’s another source of experience. Shola too, so we might be losing two or three very big senior players.”

“They will all gain from the experience we have had this year, the extra pressure in terms of never really being able to get away from getting sucked into the relegation battle. At one point, after the Sunderland game, we were sucked in. So all of that will make those players stronger.”

The Journal is saying that Villa would be willing to take around £5M for the player, and at that price maybe he could do a job for Newcastle over the next three or four years.

Bent’s wages are said to be a massive £80K a week, and he will not get that much at Newcastle, and we’d think Darren would be willing to take a lower wage to join the Tyneside club.

Let’s assume we can get Bent for £5M and reasonable wages – do you think Newcastle should get him?

Torq- is there any news of us and belhanda or has it died down?

  • 2 G // Jun 12, 2013 at 9:53 AM

I just cant see this one being true, he wont play very well with Cisse, has no sell-on value so seems to go against the model, and his work rate is pants. He is a good finisher to be fair, but thats all he is. His off the ball contribution is non existent.

Expect Garcia to sign for roma today.

2 year deal, option to extend by 1 on 1.5 million euros

  • 4 Graeme // Jun 12, 2013 at 9:57 AM

There just have to be more viable targets than Bent!! PLEASE

  • 5 Edd Case // Jun 12, 2013 at 9:58 AM

If we can sell Cisse for like £15-20M and bring in Bent for free or a couple of M’s…

    I’d take that…

More money to buy other players and Bent’s proved he can score in the Prem while Cisse’s been misfiring a fair bit…

Bent would be cheaper I suspect in wages too…

    Makes sense…

Bent and then use money to land a young, very pacey ‘purple’ striker…

    I’d settle for this scenario.

No chance – too old and little sell on value.

  • 7 Barras // Jun 12, 2013 at 9:59 AM

£5m for Darren Bent is a truly horrendous decision.

At first I thought ‘well as long as he isn’t Demba Ba’s so-called replacement’ (which he probably is supposed to be), but now I have realised that as a squad addition or as a first team purchase, this is nonsensical.

He seems to have lost his desire.
    He is nearly 30.
He has not been prolific for a while.
    He is injury prone.

Aston Villa dropped him, and gave two young forwards a chance last season, and what happened?

Weimann and Benteke, that is what happened.

What’s the standard of football like in India nowadays. I once went to a game in Calcutta about 30 years ago played in front of about 15 000 screaming fanatics in a rickety old wooden bleacher type stadium on a dry dusty dirt pitch. Standard was modest to be kind, but the game was exciting, the crowd full of passion and good humor and the players amazingly in bare feet.

Bent may or may not fit in our sytem and/or transfer policy but for 5 million he would be cheap for him

i can see a promoted side paying 8-10 mill for him

So IMHO your logic and premise are flawed

  • 10 TorqToon // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:03 AM

Geordie – I’m off for a couple weeks mate before the clubs meet back again, so not around a specific club to get as much info.

I know we still have a vested interest in the player, and have put together a good offer, but if they ARE holding out for £12-13mil I dont think we will pay that, nor do I believe it will be good value for money.

  • 11 G // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:03 AM

Edd case, regarding Cisse missfiring, a fair comment, but I feel its worth pointing out that until Ba went he was deployed on the wing, rather than up front, so he only played half a season as a striker. If he was played consistently as a striker he wouldn’t have had a bad tally at all. He deffo didn’t look as prolific as last year though, but he isnt a bad player, and he isn’t offside as much as he is chastised for, he’s just one of those players who always plays on the shoulder of the last man.

Charnley and co are due down here at bodymoor heath today! Have no idea what for, but they are meeting Villa officials so there might be legs in this?! On the brightside, those not wanting Bent, theres likely to be about 5m difference in how much we offer, rumour was Villa want 10m and we know dekka only offers half of what a team wants for a player

  • 13 yo-yo // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:04 AM

    BBC Sport’s Saj Chowdhury reports:

“Newcastle are not interested in signing Aston Villa striker Darren Bent. Reports on Wednesday suggested that the Magpies were keen on bringing the 29-year-old former Sunderland forward back to the North East.

“Bent signed for Villa from Sunderland in January 2011 in a deal believed to be worth up to £24m. He scored 11 goals in his first full season, but only scored six in the last campaign having made just 23 appearances under manager Paul Lambert.

  • 14 Lachu // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:07 AM

if we want a player like Bent , Then why the hell pardew sold Nolan

  • 15 Bearsize // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:08 AM

3 mill and 40 grand then maybe. Cisse cant play all the games. Need a big striker also (bony) and campbell to come through. Not a bad quartet of strikers. Bent will score goals and goals make us happy. And shola leaving will give everyone a lift as shola is poo!

  • 16 HAZZY1 // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:09 AM

Hi all I wouldn’t mind Bent but what im hearing lately is scaring me we want to replace that exp with free transfers like Cole, Malouda, Bentley, Franco Di Santo if these r the players we want to bolster our squad then we still need to spend money on Mertens, De Jong, Wijnaldum but I am starting to think my info on these players might be wrong if we r looking at free transfers.

  • 17 Indian Magpie // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:09 AM

    Australia to Bat first

  • 18 geordiefromthemidlands // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:09 AM

    Thanks torq.
Not sure on bent at all. Rather a younger striker

  • 19 Carl92 // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:10 AM

I hope we are in for another Pacey, tricky winger. Hoping for someone like Payet or Mertens or even Boudabouz wouldn’t be a bad signing either.

  • 20 Edd Case // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:14 AM

For what it’s worth, I cannot see us signing Bent anyway.

Just not in Ashley’s blueprint for transfers.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we actually signed someone though!

  • 21 Bearsize // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:19 AM

Darren bent was mis treated last season obviously wants to prove a point, world cup season and being 29 this guy will be hungry. Kick up the backside he has had, think bent might just surprise a few. I would def take a punt

  • 22 Indian Magpie // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:21 AM

Mike Ashley would rather play himself than buy Darren Bent

  • 23 Barras // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:24 AM

    Et al.

Bent will not go to the World Cup.

  • 24 Bearsize // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:31 AM

    Ha dont tell him that

  • 25 HAZZY1 // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:34 AM

Torq any news ur end m8?

  • 26 TorqToon // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:38 AM

Hazzy – No mate. On my holidays for a couple weeks. I only hear stuff when I’m not about when I receive calls etc.

I hear anything I will let everybody know.

  • 27 Newcastle Brown Alien // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:38 AM

I’d pay £5M, hope he scores a load, and put sunderlands nose right of joint

  • 28 Angel Of The Toon // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:38 AM

Dont see why we cant get realistic players who are either being wasted at big teams with great potential or up and coming players like the Scott Sinclairs and Tom Ince’s of this world, and try and get back to the days of pace when we had bellamy, dyer, robert…

cant remember the last time we got in behind teams consistently

  • 29 Jan Stavik // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:38 AM

Bent at 5m would be a snip. He’s strong and has pace, even though he’s been prone to injuries he’ll be able to play more (and better) than Shola. Bring him in!

  • 30 ToonDarnSarf // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:41 AM

I can confirm, we were after Darren Bent!

10 years ago anyway…we could have (and should have) signed Bent at the same time as we signed Darren Ambrose…shame…

  • 31 Indian Magpie // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:41 AM

Can’t believe peeeeeeeeople would rather have shola than this guy

  • 32 blew // Jun 12, 2013 at 10:54 AM

Brokenbrain has stated we need to address the lack of goals from set pieces, at 5ft 10ins Bent is hardly the man win high balls from our hoofball and set pieces.
He would be a good signing, but not to play alongside Cisse.

  • 33 Owldman // Jun 12, 2013 at 11:14 AM

Seems to me that the talk that we had signed Douglas was way of the mark word is that he will be meeting his advisers today to discuss his future, hardly the action of someone who has already signed for the Toon!

  • 34 Greebol1892 // Jun 12, 2013 at 11:35 AM

5m??? The world’s gone mad…. 3.5m absolute tops for a bit-part striker who could do a better job than our current no.23 but is lightyears behind Cisse. Slash his wages as well and it could be a reasonable deal (2-years?). Don’t really care about the ex-mackem rubbish….. if he’s good enough then I’m all for it.

  • 35 wynsleap // Jun 12, 2013 at 11:35 AM

A 29 year old has-been striker deemed not good enough for Aston Villa?
Why should we want him? – £5million can be better spent elsewhere.
The current lack of transfer urgency from The Toon is quite disturbing. It’s looking like last summer’s window all over again.
Does this useless, unambitious lot ever learn?
More to the question – do they even care?

  • 36 LEROI // Jun 12, 2013 at 11:45 AM

i would be quite satisfied if we signed bent as our first transfer of this window. the guy has always scored goals for fun in the past, he gets a bad review off many a football fan, but goals win games and he’s still got 2 or 3 yrs of minimum at 10 goals a season, injuries permitting that is. pardew may go further back to the dark ages of 442 but this can be pretty effective as in the shearer/ferdinand partnership.

  • 37 numba9 // Jun 12, 2013 at 11:48 AM

He will get us goals like he has everywhere he has been villa paid too much like Liverpool did for Carroll but he has more goals in him than Carroll so 5 is good value

  • 38 ledonkey // Jun 12, 2013 at 2:37 PM

NUFC have received a 15m bid for Cabaye from Atletico Madrid – Cabaye keen on the idea and not ruling out a move!

    You heard it here first!

  • 39 Marty-Toon // Jun 12, 2013 at 4:07 PM

Good player on his day but injury prone the last couple of seasons and 29 years old
Wouldn’t think MA will pay for him but Pardew likes him and Carlton Cole too. ouch

  • 40 nufcursed // Jun 12, 2013 at 6:41 PM

    pardew will take us down
    i’m 100%sure of that.
if we’re truly looking at players like bent, we might as well give up before we start!
    championship here we come again!

  • 41 low fell mag // Jun 12, 2013 at 8:13 PM

A very good signing ,if he is a back up striker. He has a wealth of experience in the premiership ,and is perfect to replace Shola.
He could be the new Mackem slayer ,and once quoted by Keegan, Id love it.
