French Reports – Cabaye Has Passed Medical At Monaco?

1:12 am, Saturday, June 15th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 125 Comments

The French web-site L’Equipe 21 is said to be reporting late Friday that Newcastle midfielder  Yohan Cabaye has taken and passed a medical at French club Monaco, who were promoted back the French first division last season.

yohan cabaye i can't hear you

Yohan Cabaye - is that Monaco calling

Cabaye has been linked closely with a move to Monaco for a few weeks now, and only a few days ago their Sporting Director Vadim Vasilyev said that Cabaye was an interesting, exciting player.

Monaco have been spending money like it’s going out of style this summer, backed by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, who bought the club in November of 2011.

A player takes a medical only when a fee has been agreed between the two clubs, and then the player must agree personal terms, so if this report is accurate, then both those things should have happened.

Monaco have spent vast amounts of money already this summer on their three signings – Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao (£50M), and Porto players Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez for £60M – so we have to assume – again if this story is true – that Newcastle got a massive fee for the French International.

There is also no income tax in Monaco, although French authorities are trying to change that, and the club’s stated intention is to get to Champions League qualification just as quickly as possible.

But L’Equipe has also been wrong in some reports like these in the past – but this is so big that we expect Newcastle to comment tomorrow morning on whether this story is true or not.

If it’s true then we hope we got big big money – like £25M (in cool cash), and at least we’ll have time to bring in a replacement.this is all started with a tweet

But a note of caution – this all started with a tweet from French Football writer Robin Bairner, and he claimed this news was on the  L’Equipe 21 web-site – but we cannot find anything on that web-site about Cabaye having passed a medical at Monaco.

Robin also says the news is from a sure (trusted) source in the Monaco FC  medical department.

Yohan Cabaye has been at Newcastle for two seasons since signing from Lille for £5M (£4.3M) – and he has played 73 times for Newcastle with 11 goals and 11 assists.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Is it just me, or if Cabaye for £20M means Graham carr has £20M to spend is that not an exciting prospect?

  • 2 Kc-Toon // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:14 AM

Im not too concerned whether he actually goes or not, Im more interested in what price we get for him!

  • 3 Toonabroad // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:16 AM

@andynufc I totally agree with you and the way Monaco like to spend money and Cabaye being ashley’s favourite player hopefully it is even more then 20million, but then comes the reality of Newcastle not reinvesting that money into our future. Sigh if only we did.

  • 4 Newcastle Brown Alien // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:17 AM

If he goes i hope it doesn’t lead to a mass exodus of our french

  • 5 manxpie // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:18 AM

andy not for me tbh cabeye imo is the hardest player to replace without doubt especially with peanuts and now every club knows we need a new playmaker (if this is true) it won’t come cheap!

  • 6 AndyNUFC // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:18 AM

Kc same, funny old game modern football is!

It has a big echo of the Carroll deal for me – uproar about the player sold, then, how much?! Oh alright then that will get a whole new team!

  • 7 Toonacious T // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:18 AM

Andy If its anything like the Andy Carroll money, he’ll get a third of it to spend in January 2015, lol!

  • 8 Shane's Silly Season Of Spectacularly Stupid Speculation // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:18 AM

    Its simple,

Yohan, you are not going anywhere, you are under contract with us and so will continue to play for us.

I don’t believe in this, ‘every player has a price’, if we sell him for 20M we can get 2 decent players in, it’s all nonsense, we should be building the whole team around a player like Cabaye not selling him!!

By the way, I’m going to give cred Steve G for Prism research.

Only mention I can find of ‘Cabaye Monaco medical’ is on this ITK-looking forum earlier, citing ‘sure source’ http://www.jeuxvideo.com/forums/1-20-23384965-1-0-1-0-monaco-cabaye-a-passer-la-visite.htm#message_23385021 … #nufc

sazzer u seem to know your twitter stuff but where does the 21 come from on that tweet from “l’quipe ” isn’t it just l’quipe?

  • 12 Toon-Prodigy // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:25 AM

    Oh dear,

Can’t say I believe this, the source is from someone who works in the medical centre where the supposed medical took place.

Surely big news corporations would of been onto this if true?

  • 13 Sazzer // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:26 AM

It is not Daily L’Equipe Ed, but L’Equipe 21′s evening edition.

The fans or have now become accountants on this site will be delighted again. oooh how much have we spend now etc……
Sad fact Is he is our star player despite some indifference in performances last year. We will gamble on more overseas players on the cheap and we again take a step back………….
am certain despite the money from sky we will still make a profit in transfers again this window

I’ve always been just Shane, changed it up specially for this summer… I had a feeling it would be a hectic one. :)

    manxpie
    Hope that answers your question.

    Toon-Prodigy
The guy posting on the board @SteveGardnerITV is supposedly this player http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florian_Pinteaux, had surely can have inside connections. So not impossible that he knows somebody at the club. It would be a bit like Bradden Inman went out saying some one passed medical at Newcastle on his regular gaming forum. Hopefully, L’Equipe have check with Monaco for confirmation.

  • 17 Mister Tuff // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:38 AM

  • 21 Toon-Prodigy // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:53 AM

Does this not seem weird though that NUFC have not released a statement saying they have accepted a fee?

One would have to think this has been accepted sometime during yesterdays working hours. Why would Newcastle wait to release a statement 24 hrs later?

Seems off to me, time will tell though.

  • 22 Mister Tuff // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:54 AM

Ref Cabaye there is currently nothing on L’Equipes’ internet pages about this story.
Cannot get the TV channel video for this evening to play in the UK -comes up with “Cette video n’est pas disponible dans votre pays”. (This video is not available in your country).
I think the story is rubbish.

  • 23 Toonacious T // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:55 AM

Manxpie – I hope your right but its hardly beyond the pale with the way things are looking. I mean they tried to sell the naming rights of the stadium, they have pedalled their wares with their “silly money” mantra every window for a while now.

  • 24 Shane's Silly Season Of Spectacularly Stupid Speculation // Jun 15, 2013 at 1:58 AM

Haha, goal.com. Have they ever reported any factual news?? I believe them as much as I do the nut job Alex Jones and his conspiracy theories. :D

Got to love a tongue twister though, my missus sure does.

  • 25 manxpie // Jun 15, 2013 at 2:10 AM

well i got that from nbc news and they say that fella who posted it works for goal.com (btw gary lineker follows nbc news) just to clarify does this class me as an ITK?

  • 26 yahya_nufc // Jun 15, 2013 at 2:22 AM

If this were true, then I would mind because think who we could sign for £20m

  • 27 Sav // Jun 15, 2013 at 2:35 AM

If its true, we definitely need a dead ball replacement for a start. Preferably, one who could take adecent corner for a change.

  • 28 p // Jun 15, 2013 at 2:39 AM

lovely jubbly, 30m for a player who was depressed and injured for half of last season.

now we have the money to sign Carlton Cole

  • 29 toon252 // Jun 15, 2013 at 3:12 AM

PLEASE READ BELOW – IT HAS IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING TH CABAYE SOURCE

Sazzer are you playing dumb or are that stupid? Read the rest of the topic, all the other posters are taking the p iss out of the lad.. “another badger invent “sisters sources” “The same medical visit Valdes? (with a snoring smiley on it)” (google translate)

Also if you click on the lads profile he’s 17 year of age – But then puts that he’s a 20 year old footballer.. It’s a gamers forum for ps3/xbox/ pc games… Yet a professional player is posting itk info on there, after posting info that Valdes had passed a medical in a previous topic (As pointed out by the above quote by poster Moyes who on his profile claims to be David Moyes “Scottish coach at Manchester United”..

Sorry if you think this seems harsh but your provoking our fans absolutely no reason, all you had to do was read the other comments!

  • 30 eplforecast // Jun 15, 2013 at 3:42 AM

If we get 30 million – i would say its a good sale. Thats exactly the type of money Cabaye is not worth.

What i say is to get Ricky Lambert, Carroll and a replacement midfield player. And its a good transfer window already

  • 31 p // Jun 15, 2013 at 4:09 AM

And get 15m for williamson while we are at it

  • 32 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Jun 15, 2013 at 4:51 AM

If Cabaye has to go then I’d want it to be to Monaco.
If Cabaye goes to Monaco then I would want it to be for at least 30m- Because Monaco can/ would pay it! Less than that and I hope they wouldn’t accept it.

HOWEVER, I would want every last penny of that money to be spent on top, ambitious players.
No more Llambias quotes of “the money will be invested but just not all on transfers….” like last time.

  • 33 89Norcal // Jun 15, 2013 at 5:01 AM

AndyNUFC, ha! a pipe dream in every sense!

I think there’s a reason JFA hasn’t chimed in yet; it’s because he’s probably died from laughter at the notion we would reinvest any money.

This may call for another Mike Ashley/Derek Llambias parody cartoon…

  • 34 cyprus // Jun 15, 2013 at 6:09 AM

Don’t know if this is true, but anything over 20 mil. will be welcome. I’ve seen too many games in which Cabaye was swamped. And we need a new set up as the current one is clearly not working. The money should buy us two speedy, exciting wingers. That together with a new small crafty Uruguayan (or something) CF and we should be looking at CL football! Sorry AP, it’s Europe again ;)

  • 35 valle // Jun 15, 2013 at 6:10 AM

Cabaye is gone, deal with it… Whether this deal is true or not, there is simply to much smoke to make it quite clear that he wants a move, he even more or less stated so himself and anyone thinking otherwise are kiddin themselves. This is in my opinion not a huge deal, Cabaye are a good player but he has been blown up to be something even more spectacular than he really is, especially in his native france and allot of it stems from media coverage of how our supporters took him to heart from the start. He does however have a bad streak in him as we have seen by some headless tackles now and then and he was there in the end to our season when we couldnt buy a win, heck he was even captain. If we can get a huge over the top amount for him, I would see that as a great deal. Not because im much bothered with our accounts as some people make it out to be, but because we can buy a replacement and then some for any amount of more than 20 mil.

  • 36 Aussiedave // Jun 15, 2013 at 6:11 AM

Cabaye may well leave but this story for me is absolute rubbish. Monaco would be required to have a bid already accepted from NUFC for a medical to take place. This is usually disclosed by the club.

Cant see him going back to playing in France as he knows this is a step down in quality, top clubs in better leagues would be able to offer him similar wages to Monaco

  • 37 Aussiedave // Jun 15, 2013 at 6:13 AM

Just a though on the Andy Carroll situation,

Ladbrokes are offering 6-1 on Carrol returning to NUFC, why dont we bet 3m on him coming home then sign him. The 18m winnings (15m profit) will cover the transfer fee.

Would be great if this was allowed

  • 38 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jun 15, 2013 at 6:30 AM

Selling Cabaye to make way for Sessegnon ??????

  • 39 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Jun 15, 2013 at 6:37 AM

@Charlie – where have you got that from? Sessegnon is a good player but not for me.

He goes in and out of form in patches, and seems to have gone bad now; not reliable enough.

He’s in no way a replacement for Cabaye because he’s a totally different type of player. He’s more an attacking mid/ winger and not the deep passer that Cabaye is

We have someone like him (runs at defences, shoots from range, does something special) who is superior to Sessegnon and that’s Ben Arfa.

Also, he’s almost 30 and obviously from Sunderland.

  • 40 Graeme // Jun 15, 2013 at 6:41 AM

Complete speculation until its confirmed by NUFC I’m afraid.

But, if he does go, it will be for serious money, which we have to hope will be re-invested in the team during this window, to allow incoming players to do the pre-season and bed in.

Its not like we don’t need the investment and this may be the only way we are going to get it. Hopefully Mr Carr can get some players that Pardew can actually coach without ruining them by improving the wingers ability as a full back!!

I guess we just wait and see!!

  • 41 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jun 15, 2013 at 6:45 AM

    gonufc
Got it from nowhere – but stood out a mile last season at home against us played in position – floated between midfield and attack hard to pick up we hadn’t a clue how to play him –

As for Cabaye class act but had a poor season played to deep always went off with some mystery injury after 70-80 minutes, tackling not the best leaves his foot in and didn’t look interested at times – if we get £20 million plus – good deal

    Morning all,

People aren’t really going for this Cabaye deal, are they? The biggest give away is that Indy hasn’t said anything on it yet ;)

Whilst he may be off at some point this summer guys, for our own sanity we have to try and not fly off the handle after each tweet or we’re going to have a mass breakdown on here :)

On Colo, aww bless his little cottons, they wont pay enough for him and we wont let him leave for free so he will honour his contract….snarky sarcasm to one side…at least he is handling it somewhat gracefully and not kicking up. For what it’s worth, I do get the impression he has a lot of respect for the club and it’s fans and his reasons for wanting to go really are family matters. Well, that’s what I believe anyway.

Time for a Cabaye, I mean coffee.

  • 48 Ibizatoon - Back By Popular Demand // Jun 15, 2013 at 8:03 AM

  • 56 Readingmag // Jun 15, 2013 at 8:25 AM

Sadly it does not work out when you sell a player for £30m, you cannot buy £30 m players, with signing ons ,wages, agents fees…no doubt a little goes missing.

Realistically buy 2/3 players for Approx £23 m..(2 more expensive and one kids)

Sad news if true about Yohan….but made my day about Colly….our best player (brings stability to the defence, then the team)

  • 57 Slank // Jun 15, 2013 at 8:25 AM

The dates for the French transfer window (1 July – 31 Aug) are the same as England.

If he is going well…. adieu. Wasn’t impressed with him last season. couldn’t cross a decent ball from set pieces, his shooting was dire and his rash tackling that should’ve seen a red on more than one occasion. There is no doubt he has bags of talent and could play for a top team, just wondering about his commitment to the toon. Glad Coloccini is staying even though not his choice. I’m sure a few known faces will leave this window , lets just hope Carr has found good replacements.

Why are some fans fixated about transfer money?

It’s not as if it financially impacts them. It would be quite different if the club asked them to cough up more of their own money to fund the purchase of players.

The transfer price we sometimes see in the papers is not the total amount of the transaction. There are other transactions associated with purchase and sale of a player that nearly always take place to which it is rarely, if ever, reported in the papers.

Selling a player for (say) £30M and therefore thinking that club can now buy two players for £15M each is for simpletons.

  • 72 sparky55 // Jun 15, 2013 at 8:42 AM

1 purple down, 2 purples to go…it’s starting to unravel.

Yes he will be replaced (although Anita is the natural replacement anyway if pards can convince him to stay) but don’t think we’ll spend more than half of what we get for Cabs on his replacement.

Remember lads…Ashley and lard@rse will come out with the same old saying…’all the money we get from the players we sell will be reinvested in the club for new players and their wages.’

In essence what that means is 40% of what we get in cash terms gets reinvested in buying players and 60% of what we get in cash terms is re-invested in wages for the players we buy in.

So in simple terms…less than half of what we collect will be spent on replacements. It’s a very good and sensible business model that covers the wages of new players coming in going forward…brilliant business model but not so brilliant for long suffering fans who want to see progression.

We haven’t seen the selling cycle yet of the ‘purples masterplan’ yet but we’re just about to…2 more purples to go

Ashley only ambition is to get loads of money when he sells the club…until then it’s wheeling and dealing to keep the club cash flow positive…no ambition to win anything whatsoever so this year we’re a selling of purples club and the cycle of recruiting new replacement promising purples to be sold in 2/3 years starts again.

You have to admire the logic but as a supporter we’re never going to like it

  • 73 Toonfan8 // Jun 15, 2013 at 8:45 AM

most important is Collocini, Cabaye can go for good money…We can use it and bring Belhanda…and we can try Dortmund tactics 4-2-3-1
    Debuchy,Mbiwa,Colo,Haidara
    ——Anita——–Sissoko
    Ben Arfa–Belhanda—Santon
    ————–Cisse—————–
and we have options S.Taylor,Douglas defence
    Tiote,Bigirimana holding midfielders
    Marveaux AM
and bring one pacey winger and Bony and thats it
    sell Cabaye,Williamson—-27

IF and I don’t think this is true, but if he is going, then for me he’s doing a runner, cracked under the pressure of the league, cracked under the weight of the captains armband, was truly abysmal last season (to the point I can’t see anyone paying £20 mil for someone who literally couldn’t make a pass last season)
For me cabaye needs a reality check this season, he needs to stop thinking about playing for France in brazil next summer get his head down and graft along with the rest of lads

According to Wiki it is still 1st July to 31 August but ESPN says that the French window is open. Very confusing.

    Good Morning Lads !

In the Dutch Press this Morning ! Trust the Dutch Papers marginally better the UK ones?

Roysten Drenthe to Reading on a 4 year deal ?

75% of the first team selection at PSV are up for sale! This includes Pieters,Mertens Lens and Toivonen.

The last two Jermaine Lens and Ole Toivonen are reported to be om the verge of signing Four Year Deals for Norwich City?

So it looks like Norwich not only have got van Wolfswinkel but are also getting Lens and Toivonen too?

If Norwich are busy making deals with Agents and Players when transfer windows are not even open then WHY the hell are,nt we doing that too?

Re-post: I would,nt let Cabaye go to any other club for anything less than 25 Mil ? And such a transfer would still Piss me Off completely!

  • 80 NUFCarter // Jun 15, 2013 at 8:54 AM

    Newexpat
Oh yeah was reading sky sports yesterday and saw that reading had signed drenthe. That is a great deal.

Also I read jermaine lens is close to a deal with dynamo kyev

  • 81 NUFCarter // Jun 15, 2013 at 8:56 AM

I would to for mertens though. Dont need pieters, don’t really rare toivonen but I’d take jermaine lens as well but for a small fee.

  • 82 proudtobageordie // Jun 15, 2013 at 8:57 AM

    Gents

Nufc have not accepted a bid for Cabaye as it stands. So these rumours of passing a medical are nonsense as this has to be agreed before any medical takes place?

  • 86 NUFCarter // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:03 AM

Reading BBC sport gossip column and John obi Mikel could be going to galatasaray for 16 million!! Now that is overrated.

Also, Paulo di canio wants to bring in 10 players to safc with Mignolet and sessegnon leaving.

  • 87 proudtobageordie // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:03 AM

    Sparkky

Im not convinced on that at all. Speaking to debuchy on that subject last season he was pretty convinced that he was staying so the jury is still out on that subject with me

  • 88 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:04 AM

Just like to add ! If facts are anything to go by !

What i said is only quoted in the Dutch Press ! And Dynamo Kiev are the other club linked to Lens !

If i was scouting PSV i would go and look at their youth squad? There are supposedly three or four players from their youth scheme making the step up to first Team Footy, with at least one in the National Youth Squad !

Also as a side story van Ginkel apparantly also on ther verge of a 5 year deal move away from Arnhem Vitesse to
    Chelsea !

Who are in for ? Darren Bent!

  • 89 johnboy // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:11 AM

Jesus there are some ridiculous comments on this thread! From what I have read there is no base to this story yet people are going mental chatting rubbish about Ashley lining his pockets etc!
I’m not a fan of the bloke but can we not at least wait till some ACTUAL news on this before we start giving him shit!

  • 90 lesh // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:12 AM

Off topic but the Guardian’s reporting that Murdoch with his near global spread of tv, has proposed the establishment of a summer competition for top big clubs.

It’s suggested that the competition would be staged in cities throughout the world with potential hosts bidding to do so – ala Formula 1.

Such a competition could lead to a new franchising arrangement that could lead to a super-type league outside of Eufa, Fifa et al. And, that’s the FFP rule dealt with too!

How’s the travelling Toon Army gonna deal with that one, or could it spell the end of home and away games as we understand them?

    Food for thought eh?

  • 91 Hatem's better than Messi // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:13 AM

Amazing that after six years of Ashley and his five year plans … no one trusts him to invest any transfer monies on new players.

    ASHLEY OUT!
    LLAMBIAS OUT!
    PUPPET OUT!

    Morning all.

If we get £25 million for Cabaye, whether we spend it or not, I will be delighted.

Woeful last season. EVERY corner was a set piece for the opposition.

73 games, 11 goals and 11 assists is not world class.

Getting 2 players in with that money would be superb business.

  • 99 stuart no9 // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:21 AM

TADS @ 74 again i dont think it is true about cabs , however i would disagree with your reasons why he would leave. i believe if he went it would be simply because the thought of another miserable season, playing cr@p football under a negative manager does not appeal to the best of players, nevermind quality. his whole attitude was not right last season – and as some people say- you dont become a bad player over night.

  • 100 proudtobageordie // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:22 AM

    Tiote

Imo we do not need to replace Cabs if he does go as Anita is just as good if not better. He has not been given a real run in the team. Also we are not short in that department either. Personally Cabs is at nufc next season anyways

I don’t really get this anger at Ash not spending the cash.
Were the 6 new quality players in January a mirage then?

I think money is always available for the right player. Our squad is easily top 6.

My only beef with Ash is his rubbish chairman and managerial appointments

  • 103 Tommyy // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:26 AM

Cabaye for any less than 20m is pointless, as little of the money will be used for the transfer kitty. Any other club would have all the funds unless they were in financial trouble.

  • 107 NUFCarter // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:28 AM

I would love to see siem de Jong at NUFC even if cabaye stays.
He’s only 24. Scored double figures in the past 4 seasons. 69 goals in 213 appearances and 50 goals In 149 appearances in the league.

This player would be brilliant in the premier league. No dought.

Morning proud – possibly some very exciting news ahead this weekend. Things have stepped up a pace on 3 of our primary targets.

And no, they aren’t Darren bent and James tomkins as I’m sure you’ll already know. I’m hoping we swoop in and meet with thauvins reps whilst we are in and around area. :-)

Spot on with Colo news – saw you were torn to shreds by certain people but you were proven right. Well done. Anything else happening that you are aware of?

Hatem – relax man. It’s only early!

  • 109 Tommyy // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:29 AM

Seim de jong very exciting and ver close to a deal. Have you heard the same?

  • 112 Rotonda heights // Jun 15, 2013 at 9:35 AM

It’s very worrying Pards has asked for a more hands on role in transfers and ever since we’ve been linked with Spearing, Tomkins and Pilkington who are far more his workaday journeymen type players . Pardew can’t seem to deal with top names.

Any more news on that technical director?
