It could be that Mike Ashley has been waiting for Joe Kinnear to become fit enough to work again, before he offered Joe another job at Newcastle, after Joe had to leave the Newcastle manager’s job in February, 2009 after more heart problems.
Joe Kinnear – in September, 2008 at St, James’ Park
Doesn’t look like Newcastle were playing well
At the meeting that took place with Alan Pardew and Mike Ashley at the end of the season, it seems that Mike Ashley told Alan he was thinking about appointing a new Director of Football to help oversee the transfers, both into and out of the club, although Mike didn’t mention names of potential candidates.
This is what Joe Kinnear has said about being approached for the job a few weeks ago by the Newcastle owner:
“Mike Ashley, the owner, came round my house and we had a chat,” “He asked me about my medical condition and how I was feeling and one thing and another. I said I’ve been cleared, medically, for the last four or five months.
“I’m coming off my treatment. I’ve lost a stone-and-a-half of weight. I’m very fit, and I’ve been looking after myself. I have been going to the gym a lot and taking walks.”
We don’t know what coming off the treatment means, but if it means coming off the medication he’s been on for his heart condition that’s not good.
And with the pressures of the new job he will need that medication more than ever, although it’s good that Joe has lost weight, and extra weight is always a strain on the heart.
Joe Kinnear was the Wimbledon manager when he suffered a heart attack before a league game against Sheffield Wednesday in March 1999, and he had to stand down form the Wimbledon job a few months later.
Joe did come back to manage Luton Town and Nottingham Forest before coming in as interim manager at Newcastle in September of 2008.
And at Luton Town in 2001, he was hired as the Director of Football initially, but then Kinnear demoted manager Lil Fuccillo and appointed himself as manager of the club.
That’s interesting.
Luton were fighting relegation at the time. but they were still relegated in May of 2001 from the second division, although in the following season Kinnear had them promoted.
And it will be good to see what Joe looks like these days, since we’ve been using photos of him from 2008 and early 2009, when he was the manager at Newcastle.
It will not be good if Joe has more health problems in his new job – not at all good for Joe – so we hope he really is fit enough for his new job.
And as you grow older your health becomes more and more important to you.

Comment #41After his unprofessional approach towards the media, fans, and players’ his position is untenable. His contract should be terminated forthwith. Just like the debacle with Dennis Wise. In any other business if I or anyone else brought the company into disrepute: our contract would be terminated with immediate effect!

Comment #47I wasn’t suggesting anyone on this blog wishes ill health on anyone, merely pointing out that some articles on here are not newsworthy, and only contribute to a negative atmosphere around the club. Ed has a responsibility to set the tone, and I feel he could do a better job.

Comment #48Well what’s happening today, thought my computer was broken earlier on as it seemed to be repeating long winded posts submitted by “the rose tinted self congratulatory back slapping jam tomorrow brigade”, previously known as the “Blind Faith Brigade”.
After eventually getting through said posts,(stopped halfway through for refreshments -bit like the interlude at the cinema) I would not necessarily disagree about getting the club on a sound financial footing – excellent position to promote the sale of the club, or make it ultimately self sustaining but will probably have no effect on financial management when other “big clubs” drive a coach and horses through the Financial Fair Play Rules.
There was a suggestion by one that it was the fans who caused the bad press stories. This is really not true -the Toon are lousy at PR and bring it all upon themselves.
Lastly it is reputed that the worlds most common lie is when people say “trust me”.

No Div 1/Prem Lge title in 87 years.
FACT.
No FA Cup winners success in 57 years.
FACT.
No League Cup win in 52 years.
Proves how ambitous and successful our owners were before Ashley.
I watched my first Toon match in 1959 and I’ve seen us win win one trophy – the Fair Cup in 1969.
Don’t tell me Ashley is the worst and most unambitious owner we’ve had.

Comment #58Great to see some of these deluded morons being slapped down by the likes of PAW, Bill’s-son and Rooster (amongst others).
These idiots obviously don’t have a clue about what is happening in the wider world and think that they have some valid complaint. Get a grip and thank your lucky stars that you weren’t born in Syria or Libya or somewhere similar and aren’t having your country completely screwed over in the name of the Petro-dollar.
We are on the road to WWIII and people are whining on about us not finishing higher and higher in the league with each passing season.
Here’s the news, you do not “deserve” success nor is it possible for any team to constantly improve. It is frigging impossible.
Some of you whingers need to wake the frig up and realise there is some serious stuff happening while you are living in your football fantasy land.
Be thankful that we aren’t part of this ridiculous, debt-with-interest culture.

Surely if the bloke knew anything about football the job for DOF would have been advertised and a more suitable appointed would have made.

Comment #61Billson, trying to defend Ashley by comparing him to useless gobshites like McKeag et al wont get us anywhere. We are in hock to him now, and yes he has cham=nged things to buy us some good players, good investments. But so many other aspects of his tenure are so badly flawed , some of his decisions so misguided that spouting on about him being our best owner ever is pretty pointless. You must have felt a kick in the teeth when this man you laud so much again went down the “jobs for my mates ” route and appointed Kinnear….

Comment #64Vanc, MA will keep everything in house, he likes and trusts JK we may not be over ennamered by him, but the top man does, nowt we can do, another hard decision and one that divides a lot of fans again, I don’t want to come on the forum with the I tell you what it is patter, but there has to be a different voice, look I aint to fond of our manager, and I had a right pop at him many times last season, its up to him to put certain things right from last season, it was hideous at times, his excuses his tactics his favorites etc etc.
I support MA on the whole, he brought Pardew in but I will still have a go if I don’t think something is right, Pardew for me the coin is still in the air, good the season before last, awful last season, we just pray the coin drops in our favour this season, I personally, THINK IT WILL.

It is a football blog, if people want to complain about Ashley, then that is there choice, if they want to support Ashley, then that is there choice.
Bringing in Syria, Libya etc is utterly irrelevant and brings nothing to this debate. If that is what you want to discuss then use a different forum.
Anyway, right my 2 cents, I don’t think Ashley has done as much good as some on here seem to think, whilst he has done some good, a lot can be traced back to beneficial reasons for him. That isn’t a problem for me, if things that benefit his evil plan benefit the club at the same time then great. If by SD growing through global audiences means we need to be in the prem, great. If is buy low policy brings us talented players like Cabaye, HBA etc, then great. If he doesn’t have to accrue further debt by interest payments, meaning extra cash to spend elsewhere then great.
However, he has made some huge errors while at the club, and has alienated himself from the general public through doing this. I can by and large accept some of his past misdemeanours, the stadium name change was an error, particularly using SD, if he had done it but used The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Arena to ‘showcase’ it there would not have been the uproar. Wonga, if they offered the most cash, and if the reports were true that they would pump money into various areas of the club on top of the fee then I can begrudgingly accept it.
But, the kicker for me is that if he had shown even the slightest hint that he was becoming more savvy on the football side I may be a little more sympathetic, but from day 1, he has listened to the advice of close friends rather than people who are suited to give advice.
Jimenez, Wise, Kinnear, Llambias were all terrible appointments. Pardew was a baffling move. Keegan and Shearer were an attempt at appeasing the fans, both were awful appointments (proves fans don’t always know best) Hughton, he got lucky, the man was already here, and Ashley didn’t find someone who wanted to step in to the turmoil while Ashley attempted to sell the club.
He continues to make recruitment errors to key positions in the backroom, and by all intents and purposes, the recruitment process is a beer down the Orange Tree pub. Until those backroom positions are filled appropriately then how can there be this “stability” we hear so much about.
I can guarantee that he will not run SD recruitment like this, so why should we have to put up with it?

Comment #74I’m talking about life. Not politics.
Opinions are only worth something when they take into account the whole picture. Some people seem so focused on Newcastle and nothing else that their opinions are not in fact opinions, they are mere thoughts and conjecture. They don’t have a clue about the history of Newcastle nor do they have a clue about how life is for the other god-knows-how-many football teams in the world.

Comment #75Well I for one am not defending MA to the extent I want people to follow me.
Everyone should make up their own mind, we have free will for a reason.
I just feel alot of people are giving him alot of negativity when in reality he is the reason the club is still going today.
You cannot say we would/or would not be here today if MA did not buy the club, its one of those “What ifs?” scenarios, but the club was in melt down before he came. The way it was heading, we could well have been Pompey/Leeds dropping through divisions.
Time will tell if we manage to improve under his tenure, right now I think we have. The club is more stable, younger, and has more prospect.
We have no real mercenaries like Owen, Geremi, Smith or Viduka anymore. AND Thank god that is the case!
I agree we have a very average manager, I agree we have a shambles of a DoF, but anyone needs to understand MA is here for money.
If the club fails to improve, changes will be made, as he is not getting money! Simple as!
If they do improve then he makes money, but ultimately we are winning to because for him to succeed in his goal, Newcastle need to win games, and be a better club in all aspects.
If the clubs strands itself around relegation like last season the club will ultimately be worth less. And that is not an option for him.
Being all negative and inviting the world media to put the club under a micro scope will not help our cause, infact if we are looking at PEA why would he come to us?!
Our fans are protesting about the chairman, its all doom and gloom! All they do is make the club overall look a state, when in reality this time last year it was all fine and dandy, which in reality is no better off OR worse this year.
Ok we arent in EL but that has caused some iffy performances, so it has two sides to the coin!
Talk to me in December, and we will know a better standing to where we stand in the overall PL, with NO excuses this time round. Pardew certainly will be held accountable, as would Kinnear according to the man himself.

Comment #76Martoon, I really do think MA respects JK as a football man, and he is a football man, many may see him as a bit of a t rex but its his decision, I think he may well be friendly with JK but he thinks he can do a job for him, again lets wait and see, it is better the devil you know with Mike, and I would be surprised if in any of his other businesses if any people out of his circle get the big jobs.

Comment #78Rooster – good parallel – the bunker mentality -never thought of that. The way the JK “appointment” hit the news could feature in future PR guides as how not to do something correctly.
1.All those authorised to speak are away on holiday.
2.JK goes solo and makes a fool of himself and as a consequence the club.
3. Nobody is in position to effect “damage limitation”.
4. As usual no a peep from MA -to limit the press speculation by setting a Toon agenda.
5. Not even a lying story from SD News.

You speak alot of sense, and I wholeheartedly agree with the appointments in both manager and backroom staff.
I think you make a valid point, and fans in reality do not know best. Lets be honest you cannot please everyone!
The fact is Kinnear, for me is the only bad thing about the club I love right now.
Why? Because he is a walking car crash, especially in modern day football with how “under the scope” everything is.
Kinnear although football savvy (maybe 20 years ago), is for me the wrong man for the right job.
Still we as a collective whole have NO idea what has been said behind the scenes. I mean Joe Kinnear may/may not be a good appointment. I suspect the later, but we will see.
Right now the club needs its fans, and as you delicately put it, if the club does well who cares?!
People need to understand though, MA wants that too, so if we want JK out, and Newcastle do badly this season, he will be out!
Simple as that really, MA will go elsewhere. As for Pardew the same solution.
If we do well, then all these moaners and groaners will wait for a rainy day to put their troll helmets on and come out in force with their pitchforks as has been expected in the past, and the will be in the future!

Comment #80I was illustrating a certain ignorant mentality that these whingers are displaying. They are ignoring the reality of the situation. Insulting anyone who disagrees with them.
Be it about football or “world politics” (reality) they are incapable of absorbing the information presented to them by others. They think acting like a hard man makes their opinions right.
It is completely related to this blog and the deluded child-like moaning of some of the people on here.
