Newcastle have been vaguely linked with Montpellier star Younes Belhanda this month, and he has said he has the chance to join an English club, and that he will make his decision imminently.
Younes Belhanda – likely moving to Aston Villa
But the only time we have been linked with Younes is earlier this month, when Aston Villa were reported to have put in a solid bid for him, when Newcastle were said to be interested.
Certainly Graham Carr will know all about the Moroccan play-maker, after he tracked the Montpellier captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa for over a year, before Newcastle signed the French International in January.
This is what Belhanda said to Sky Sports today:
“My decision is imminent, I have still got the time to think a bit but I will stand by the decision I will take,” “I wanted to play in the Premier League, I have the opportunity so let’s see.”
Sky Sports is reporting that a second offer had come from Abu Dhabi club Al Jazira, and we would be a bit surprised if Newcastle were really in the hunt for this player – and most likely he is talking about joining Aston Villa.
This is what he had said in early June, when Newcastle were supposed to be linked with him:
“I am definitely aware that there are five clubs with serious interest in me,” “The president told me how much I will cost for any team that wants me.” “I have told everyone that England will be my first choice.”
“Aston Villa is a great club with a big history playing in the best league in the world, so let’s see what will happen.”
It seems that Joe Kinnear has already put in some offers for our targets, so Newcastle’s first signing could be imminent, and it could be a surprise signing too – and while we doubt it will be the Moroccan International – you never know.
For the record, Belhanda joined the Montpellier Youth Academy at the age of 13, and since making his debut in the team’s first league match of the 2009–2010 season against Paris Saint-Germain at the age of 19, he has made 142 appearances with 29 goals and 16 assists for the former French Champions.
Belhanda has also played 22 times for Morocco with a couple of goals.
