Reports That Newcastle Bid £11M For St. Etienne Center-Back

France Football is reporting that Newcastle are not only after St. Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but that we are also interested in their top young center-back Kurt Zouma.

Kurt Zouma

Kurt Zouma – top young French center-back

18 year-old Zouma is of Central African descent and made his first team debut for St. Etienne in April of 2011, when he started the game against Bordeaux, and he was only 16 at the time.

Zouma stands 6’2″ tall,  and since his debut he has played 46 times for St. Etienne with four goals, and he has played for all the France Youth sides through U20.

Zouma is currently representing the French U20 side at the U20 World Cup being held in Turkey at the moment, where both Gael Bigirimana (England) and Curtis Good (Australian captain) are also participating..

France Football magazine is reporting that Newcastle are about to bid €29 million (£24.7M) for the two St. Etienne players. in a double bid.

The way it’s supposed to be split is €16 (£13.6M) for Aubameyang and a massive €13 (£11.1M) for Zouma,

We have never seen Zouma play, and just over £11M seems an absolutely massive fee for the youngster.

The current President of France Francois Holland has stated in an interview in April this year, that he sees Zouma as a potential future captain of the full French national side.

If Newcastle can pull off this double scoop from St. Etienne, we would have a top class striker, and a top class young center-back at the club.

And presumably Zouma would be the center-back we bring in this summer – and Newcastle would not need to pursue West Ham center-back James Tomkins.

We hope Newcastle can pull this deal off, that would be fantastic, given the great potential of the 18 year-old, and then we could even accuse Mike Ashley of spending some big money this summer. 😀

Here’s some video of Zouma in action.

Would be great to get these two through the door. Really hope we get at least a prospect for rb though. As for belhanda hes linked with a lot of big clubs and im not sure we will get him or even if we are actively trying.

    Hoping for an interesting window.

Could be a sweetener to the PEA deal…. but i carnt see us paying 11million for a potential nonenglish cb…. surely wouldnt it be wiser to go for Sakho from PSG?

Kizza that wouldnt stop the club confirming our bid and accepting or refusing it… that is ultimately the first step of the process that usually is the stumbling block for NUFC. Then we would have to get PEA to choose us and sign on the dotted line, hopefully everything will be in place for him coming back from holiday.

I think either real or barca are after thiago silva so if thats true I cant imagine psg letting sakho go too.

Unfortunate as hes a great talent and was getting wasted on the bench last season

@Sean if anyone get thigo then no i cannot imagine PSG will let him go, unforetuneatly PSG are one of these clubs that can afford to bench great tallent without the worry of having to sell them…. which in turn is useful when people come to buy your best players.

Aye, would you want Newcastle to be like that though? I don’t think I would myself, just another city, chelsea, psg, or Monaco.

Saying that chelsea cant seem to BUY the title any more.

I certainly wouldnt want our team to be like that, however i wouldnt mind a full 11 of excellent players with some half decent covers for every spot.. some players on the bench to really come on and change a game for the better. Isnt it about winning things not always balancing the books, to see us drop our interest in players over 1-2million when they have great potential, just to then invest that money in useless players at 1-2million prices is frustrating to say the least.

Yeah thats the only potentially good thing about kinnear replacing lambeezee, I saw him as more money oriented but I imagine if kinnear knew another mill or so would make the difference he would fight for it. That said, it remains to be seen. Iv calmed down a bit and can talk about him without grinding my teeth now too, which is a positive.

Zouma is rated along the same lines as Varane who plays for Real Madrid…. And we know how well he’s turned out… They will be France’s two CH’s in years to come.. I hope we do get him… Fingers crossed…

So… Zouma, PEA and Belhanda and Kinnear’s a genius!! (tongue firmly in cheek!)

Would be interesting if what one person on here said (can’t remember, sorry!) that Kinnear was brought in to listen to Carr a lot more than Pardew was. That Pardew was after the old cloggers like Tomkins and Darren Bent whilst declining to bid for raham Carr’s gems from europe!

    We can but dream….

Well… Last time we had Llambias as DOF and his transfer methods, and he got sacked. I don’t know if it was the main reason he got sacked, but Ashley did takeover the transfers in January, and he didn’t waste time bringing 5 players in. I think there some truth in PEA and Zouma rumours, I think it’s still reasonable amount of money for him, it’s not like we spending 30mil for one player. We nearly relegated last season thanks to Llambias and pardew did make a lot of excuses about his failure. If we do signed these players, there will be nomore excuses from pardew and he will have more pressure to do well.
Anyway it’s still in bidding process, nothing is final yet.

@Santon03 – Exactly, if we do sign PEA or similiar then it would be criminal if Pardew still insists on playing the same way he has ALL of last season (not just when struggling!).

He can’t keep bringing on Shola at 65 mins and just lump it up more and more!

It’s embarrassing, more long balls than stoke!

I`ll certainly be singing a different tune if Ashley sanctions the sort of spending mooted on this blog over the last 24 hrs. Big if though, at this stage of the game.

I have often wondered just exactly why he is so prudent financially when he really probably only ever needed to spend 5 – 10 % more on transfers and he`s got the dosh in spades and the returns are potentially so high for him.

    Remain perplexed, actually.

I’m not bothered about Bony going to Swansea – he isn’t the player to partner Cisse. Bony is an out and out striker just like Cisse and what we lack is a player to run the channels, hold the ball up and make assists. Bony is also slow and that is the biggest reason why so many prolific strikers from the French and Dutch leagues have failed in the Prem – its 100mph and you don’t get the time or space.

PEA is far more like it, quick, can play up on his own or off another striker and he had plenty of assists last season. Talking about pace, that is the big thing we lack. We don’t have it up front, wide, in midfield or defense. It’s a glaring reason why we struggle to breal teams down and concede so many goals.

Signing players with pace has to be a major part of our strategy this summer and Bony doesn’t fit that at all.

    Common people be realistic!

Paying £11M for potential for us is not good business knowing what we might have as spending capacity this summer.

What a team we could have with just TWO signing…best scenerio and possible

PEA would fit perfect into this team. He had around 14 assists last year and Newcastle need a player like him. Perfect with Cisse

Belhanda would also create more goals for the team and give our midfield some goals. He could play instead of gutz and has played in a defensive midfield roll so he wont let the team down

    ——————Cisse
    —————PEA
    Belhanda—————-arfa

    ———-tiote——cabeye

Zouma would be amazing but not a priority

    Precisely. Speed and brains.
Incidentally, many years ago, when Wenger was deified, he was asked what he looks for in a player and that’s what he answered.

First off, if clubs are offering 6million up for Marveaux get rid. If we can squeeze 10 out of one of the Russian clubs then that should cover a more than adequate replacement, although I wouldn’t mind seeing Inman given a chance in the CAM role from the bench. Last season was the most assists Marveaux has ever managed in one season – 6. I was amazed when I saw that, but it just backs up my belief that he is missing far too much through games, and is a last 20 minute from the bench player.

Zouma, 11million is huge for a centre back – particularly an 18year old, and even more so for a club that have kept it pretty frugal. Looks a top prospect, but would need lots of game time to continue developing. Who gets left out, Colo or MYM? It depends how much Ashley is willing to spend, if there is another 20million on top of these reported bids, then fine, but if we have very little else to spend, then I think it i too much for a position where really we just need a 3rd choice.

Cyprus – a first, we agree on something 🙂

The other thing we desperstely need is a couple of born leaders in the side. The single biggest thing that helped us at the start of the Champs season was Nolan and Smithy shaking their fists, shouting and bawling and bullying the oppo who probably thought we would be a soft touch. We don’t have one player like that in the team, STaylor is a plastic version of the real thing.

One of Fergy’s big things at ManU was having those type of players in his team and a big reason why he still played Ferdinand for the past two to three season even though he is past his best as a footballer.

Pace and leaders will go a long way to helping the other talentec players we have to show their best form.

    Bills,
I agree whole heartedly on the leader issue. Any names or suggestions as to who though? That is where I struggle. For me it would preferably a centre mid, but I can’t think of any that fit the bill off the top of my head that would be likely to be available.
