No Real News On Newcastle This Summer Apart From Kinnear

11:35 am, Sunday, June 30th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 105 Comments

This season hasn’t only been a bit unique because of absolutely no action in the transfer market, but it’s also because there’s been a dearth of real news about the club.

mike ashley smiling

Mike Ashley - has not made fans laugh with Kinnear appointment

In any summer there’s always going to be some daft reports about players we may be after, but we haven’t heard much at all coming from of the club.

And maybe no transfers and being eerily silent are related, but it’s been so quiet this summer, with very little happening apart from the Joe Kinnear nonsense, which has cheesed off (so to speak)a lot of Newcastle fans – so much so that some want their money back on their season tickets.

It seems that Newcastle cannot keep their head above water and controversy, and to have signed Joe Kinnear means we are very likely to have some negative headlines in the press this season – if his actions and words in his first week as Director of Football are anything to go by.

Of course we would hope Joe would keep a diplomatic silence – as executives should be able to do – but little to no chance on that one.

And we still expect a new Managing Director to be appointed, who well be the executive face of Newcastle United to the fans and the press.
.
If we don’t appoint somebody to replace Derek LLambias it means that Joe Kinnear could be that face to the press.

Heaven forbid – says it all.

Now having said there’s nothing much going on at Newcastle, watch us sign somebody like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this afternoon.

That would be good.

Note – please try to keep all your comments respectful to other readers – even though they may have different opinions than yourself   – thanks.

    Ed,

‘…there’s been a dearth of real news about the club.. ‘

Is that because those in the club are doing their job correctly and not leaking to the press, which is the way it should be?

  • 5 Tommyy // Jun 30, 2013 at 11:59 AM

    Slank – What, nothing?

    Tommyy,

    Yep, nothing on transfers.

Why show your hand especially when dealing in millions.

Well, we were. It’s common knowledge. We definitely undercooked it last summer and maybe we planned to buy MYM in January, but Debuchy, Goofy and Sissoko were planned for this summer from what I understand. Now we need to make sure that the signings we need this summer are made this summer.

I think ash may want out and that’s the real reason llambias walked.

it seems as if llambiais was behind the 8 year deals for that joke word stability and also the wonga deal, both of which apparently ash was non too pleased about.

It could only happen to us when we do have a good squad and only need a couple of good signings and a good manager and we’be off and running.

Sod the damn stats, this isn’t Championship Manager here. Look at the way Cabaye plays, he’s a playmaker so that certainly counts as creative to me. Ben Arfa is clearly an exciting player but I’ve said that we need another player in that mould.

The kind of striker we need is a top striker that would interest CL clubs, it’s unrealistic that signing could have been lined up when we weren’t sure what league we would be in. The signings for Villa and Dunderland are either decent squad players or youngsters. We don’t really need the former.

As for RB, we also have Tav, Santon and Saylor who can play there. MYM can play LB and Raylor should have been able to cover RB there too if he wasn’t so unlucky. GK? I forget the name of the youngster but they need to assess whether he’s good enough or not. I wouldn’t say that 3rd choice goalie is anything to worry about…

    Agreed

  • 15 BandB // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:14 PM

    TDS,

It’s good we agree. They told us directly that the January signings were a catch-up job, and they have already had the credit for that.
I hope they don’t now start saying, “but we gave you this summer’s signings back in January.”
You can’t hold two squares with one pawn.

  • 16 Roy Morten // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:14 PM

Do we really need so many new players? I think it would be enough with a LW/Striker and a CF. And replace Cabs if he goes.. Santon would be a good LW…

If we actively pursued debuchy last summer how could he of been a target for this summer?
And if MYM was a target for this summer then it shows what an utter joke our system is seeing we needed a CB for bear on two years
Same for goofy a CF was needed BEFORE ba left
If these were all targets for this summer it’s shows MA is happy to blag his way from season to season on bare bones

  • 20 geordiemark // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:19 PM

I reckon that we will sell cabaye and ben arfa to PSG think they will go for both players and we will be left up the swanny again by the club and aye your right they will say jan signings where for the summer aye right ashley so maybe our season ticket sales should be held until you do sign quality good players you tight git

  • 21 Tommyy // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:20 PM

BandB – You can if the rules are broken, and since when has the club played by any rules? It’d only be the Xth time we’ve been cheated.

  • 22 ToonDarnSarf // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:20 PM

    BandB

Yes. I think they expected a few of the youth players to break through into the first team, but they didn’t.

If we sign a striker and another attacking player, then I think we’ll have the squad where it should be.

  • 23 toon kk // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:21 PM

The january signings may have been our summer targets brought in early, we would have been relegated with out them. But our static team badly needs revamping. Imo its not all down to Pardew half our squad arnt good enough, so unless there’s changes expect more of the same next season.

  • 24 Slank // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:22 PM

I think it’s reasonable to assume that a bid will be lodged for Cabaye, because of his standing in France, but it’s no means certain that it would be accepted, especially on an initial bid.

The dilemma for Cabaye is whether his loyalty to his French colleagues (and good friends) is greater than another challenge and possibly more money elsewhere.

  • 25 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:25 PM

    TDS
There was nothing creative about cabaye last season mate, nothing at all he couldn’t even pass and seeing as we don’t play him in a role were he can be creative then yeah I’d say we need to bring in some creativity
As for the list of players who can play RB tav is not prem standard at all, Taylor is out for the season so why count him? Stevie Taylor is injury prone in a position where were short of quality so why count on him as cover in two positions, MYM at LB? He’s needed at CB santon at RB? He’s played there once for us due to not having enough cover!!!
Of course we need to strengthen our squad players we have no quality in depth at all

  • 26 ToonDarnSarf // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:28 PM

    TADS

Because the club seemed to make the decision that they wanted to give some of the youngsters their chances. Simpson and Tav could have been the RBs, Campbell could have been a striker. We also didn’t know that Ba would leave for sure until January.

I think a CB was a Jan target anyway.

It seems the people at our club can’t win. They don’t give the youth their chances and they get slated, they sign players and they should have signed them earlier…

Football isn’t an exact science, they have admitted they got it wrong. If Fergie, Tav and Campbell had done really well and we’d have got top 10, we would be saying it was a great decision.

What I want is for them to not screw up this summer. There’s 2 months left of that.

  • 27 toonarmydownsouth // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:29 PM

@NUFC_Stats: NUFC anticipate a transfer request from Yohan Cabaye when the player reports for pre-season training, according to The Daily Star #nufc

  • 28 ToonDarnSarf // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:31 PM

    TADS

Cabaye was off form last season due to injuries and other issues, we all know that. Sissoko should be able to fill in next season and be even better after a pre-season.

We have 4 CBs, about right for us, then Debuchy and Santon as FBs with Fergie and Tav as cover, plus the main CBs as necessary or even Jonas. Sure, maybe another FB as cover would be nice but hardly a priority!

  • 29 Slank // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:31 PM

    toonarmydownsouth @ 25

Right back is a position where we don’t appear to have much cover. Saylor is not very good in the position. Anita has filled in before but he is far too slight for that position. Tavernier is good going forward but is very naive at defending. The much maligned and now departed Simpson was a very good stand-in.

  • 30 geordiemark // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:33 PM

I just think its a liberty taken by the club on its supporters year in year out its always been the same going back 50 years that I know off

with the exception of keegan we have never had a stable club its always been a laughing stock of the press and tv, I even remember the time when match of the day got banned from SJP jimmy hill insulted the toon and cant remember if it was westwood or someone else who banned them

I remember when ashley took over the club he said he will invest 20 million a season into the team so hes been here 6 years and hes spent nowhere near 120 million maybe on the debt aye but bugger all else

I have decided not to renew my season ticket for next season on the grounds of fraud by the club into taking advantage of the fans am not putting up with crap tactics from an adiot manager and then listen to kinnerbasher going on and on as far as am concerned ive got sky tv and euro tv to so sod it

Think 99.9% could of predicted that tav and Campbell would break into the first team, the club let the youth down by not organising proper loan spells for them nothing to do with the first team at all
The reason the board can’t win is because they never get it right, or half right
Do you really think fans would mind slow business or stadium renaming or any of that if it genuinely came across as progression?
Nothing MA has done has been progressive, it’s been half ars3d lazy and not in the interest of anyone really
Like starting to re camp the youth, releasing half the team then just stopping completley

  • 34 numba9 // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:35 PM

The club doesn’t instil confidence in players to stay as we build because they can see from the top the ambition is lacking. He is a shoestring owner and should have bought a club like reading or Burnley

I believe Ferguson may be off to Birmingham.

  • 36 BandB // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:37 PM

Nufc.Com carried a quote from Mike Ashley the other day, dating back to when he first tried to sell the club.
To paraphrase it, it said: “I came into this as a fan. I didn’t know much about football. Maybe I’m not very good at this. I’ve made mistakes, and I’ve lost my money. I’m sorry.”
I’d give him credit for signing some good players, though sometimes too late. All of his bloopers aside, his main failure has been to invest in the backroom know-how to forge a progressive team.
Maybe he has been blinded with science while trying to get to the root cause of that, and because he stubbornly believed his business model could be grafted onto a football one.
The man needs good advice. And he needs to learn where to find it.

  • 37 ToonDarnSarf // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:38 PM

At RB, we have Saylor, Tav, Santon, Jonas and Raylor (when fit) to provide cover. Tav is old enough that he’s either ready for some action or should be sold.

But that area still isn’t a priority for me.

Our squad is much better than it was last summer, with the exception of Ba. Replace him and we’re in very good nick for top 8.

  • 40 ToonDarnSarf // Jun 30, 2013 at 12:39 PM

Agreed, we should have let the youth go out on loan. The problem was the required rebuilding after relegation, it takes time! They needed the youth as cover.

I heard that is a possibility too. Not sure for how long though? Might not be the whole season.

Also tbf alot of the players your saying can play there are squad players, kinnear has said we will be moving up to 5 players out
Raylor is out for the season, that’s confirmed so no point discussing him as cover
I’d rather see one player who can actually play RB rather than 5 who can sort of cope there if needs must which was one of our biggest downfalls last season

Mate he’s never in a million years a xavi or a iniesta! Hardly any player in world football can play there roles!

‘… club doesn’t instil confidence in players to stay as we build because they can see from the top the ambition is lacking..’

One of the problems, especially amongst the wifes of the foreign players, is that Newcastle in particular and the North East in general is not very appealing.

Heresy many would say but it has been a problem that the club has worked very hard to address, and also kept quiet about. Sunderland has the same problem, but worse.

It’s rumoured as one of the reasons why Cayabe is unsettled.

IMO we’re not able to make a sensible move in the transfer market place until such time Cabaye and Cisse and Tiote commit themselves to the club so we can then plan accordingly.

Sensibly we can’t go out and spend whatever budget Ashley has authorised and then have to react to 3 purples leaving because the team would be in disarray.

As soon as we know who’s going then we can plan…until then we’re on hold apart from the fact we need a centre forward irrespective of who stays or goes because we need one anyway.

  • 54 Klatoon // Jun 30, 2013 at 1:23 PM

If st.ettiene play hard ball why dont we take the exact bid to Cska for Seydou Doumbia? He’d compliment cisse nicely and he’s got real pace to burn. And hope no 1 brings up the afcon excuse, Ivory coast dont rate him,we can convince him to skip it.

  • 55 HullMag6 // Jun 30, 2013 at 1:26 PM

Ashley unlike whelan is running our club like a pure business so the books must balance but not the llambias style penny pinching. He has NO emotional attachment so he isn’t going to be swayed by our emotional outpourings.

He only got wound up at the end of the season because we we’re so close to losing some serious income had we gone down. He will invest – he has to, to ensure that we get back up to top half minimum because the higher you are the more money you get winnings endorsements sponsorship etc.

Now is the right time to get rid of Cabaye. If we also get rid of Tiote for £15m, we could get Siem De Jong for £9m and Mcmanaman for about £6m.

  • 87 Ketsbaia9 // Jun 30, 2013 at 2:45 PM

Sissoko, Anita and Debuchy can all play in the holding midfield role.

  • 88 Sazzer // Jun 30, 2013 at 2:52 PM

Within budget Ketsbaia, If we can get player at that fee think they will be bit more expensive. Not terrible so and the fringe players might cover that cost.

I’m not sold on Zarate though but he can’t be worse than Amalfitano for free.

  • 89 Sazzer // Jun 30, 2013 at 3:06 PM

Especially when they bought him for 20 m.

  • 90 colwell // Jun 30, 2013 at 3:16 PM

    Kets

Alderweireld thats a new one haven’t seen you mention him before.

Luckily we can offer him European football, Champions League back at St James.

If you can be DELUDED so can I!

  • 91 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Jun 30, 2013 at 3:21 PM

@Kets – who on earth is gonna pay 15m for Tiote? After the last season we’d be lucky to get 5m- he was abysmal.

Also- Alderweireld? What an original, fresh new idea that is! Why have you not mentioned it before?!

On Mcmanaman- he looks a decent young winger but not the starlet that some seem to think. His crossing is average and he tends to be a bit ‘loose’ with his touch when taking people on. I await next season to see he’s not another James Mclean.

so long as we have 3 more quality (purplish) players more than we do now which gives us a quality starting 14 rather than a quality starting 11 we have now then that’s the sort of result we should be looking for by the end of the transfer window.

if we keep everyone…then that’s great but we still need 3 more quality players…if we lose three purples like I think we will, then we need to buy 6 quality players.

Far too often last year we had nothing on the bench to change the game irrespective of Pardew being clueless and not knowing how to change a game anyway (unless to fall back and defend the 1-0 lead of course).

The squad is still too thin to embark on a serious challenge for the bottom half of the top ten or god forbid even a european place and that needs to be sorted.

  • 93 Sazzer // Jun 30, 2013 at 4:06 PM

If Cabaye or Tiote leaves I would go, then I would try replacing them with Milan Badelj.

  • 94 Sazzer // Jun 30, 2013 at 4:08 PM

    Btw, I would…

just found this online thought id share

(speaking about alvaro pereira) ‘I’m an italian Inter fan,and guys this man in real life is the worst player I’ve ever seen playing in our team. He fails every cross, is weak and can’t defend at all. I sow players like Gresko,Vampeta,Pasquale and a lot more shits, but he’s really the worst. I miss the days when mourinho played in his position a Guy called Davide Santon..’

I’ll lay odds all you neggers and Ashley bashers will have egg on your face when the window shuts.

I said at the end of last season that this window will prove a) if we are a selling club under Ashley (absolutely no evidence of that to date) and b) whether he will invest in top qualty player where we really need them, an all round CF not just a goalscorer, fast wide players who can cross and a real ball playing controlling CM (Sissoko might be better in this role than Cabaye imo).

Either me or the doomsay neggers are going to be eating humble pie. Having said that if I get it wrong I’ll admit it – bet 90% 0f the Ashley bashers wont.

    Bills

How many signings do you predict then, and how many “purple’s” do you think will leave?

  • 98 stuart no9 // Jun 30, 2013 at 4:51 PM

sparky @92 —– how dare you mention europe on this site. this is a nufc blog – not a football blog, anyway, you will upset ashley again and we all know he is capable of anything when the red mist appears . so please , do what all the other ash apologists do , and agree to whatever he says. ( just to keep the peace )

  • 99 jazzyp // Jun 30, 2013 at 4:59 PM

    bills-son.
nice to see some positivity on this site mate.
hazzy1 was predicting big news on the transfer front this week regarding de jong.
as ive said before all we can hope for is a transfer window to match January and everyone will be buzzing for the upcoming season, providing its not of the Tomkins-bent mould lol

  • 100 fatman // Jun 30, 2013 at 5:04 PM

    bills-son
if we sign bent you will find something to praise Ashley about, the fact we have the most negative spend in the premier it’s still no sign to you we are not a selling club, & if we had a player someone else wants we will sell.

  • 101 jazzyp // Jun 30, 2013 at 5:14 PM

    fatman
we all understand the frustration of being a nufc fan.And when you look at other prem clubs signing 2-3 players already the feeling is all to familiar.
the transfer window opens this week and lets see which direction mashley chooses to take us.hopefully aubameyang-de jong ect and not Tomkins and bent, which I personally feel are upgrades but not to take the team to the dizzy heights of the top 5

  • 102 Tommyy // Jun 30, 2013 at 5:16 PM

It’s always ‘next window will prove etc’ and when it invariably doesn’t? ‘Oh well the next one will for sure’.

  • 103 Ketsbaia9 // Jun 30, 2013 at 5:20 PM

Hate the word ‘purple’ players and the word ‘smokescreen’. Seems to be used by lots of people. Does my head in. Zarate is quality. 4 goals in 11 appearances for Brum. Great talent and still only young at 26.

If we put a £6.4m bid in for Alderweireld, we’d sign him.

Tiote is overrated so £15m isn’t unrealistic. We should’ve got rid of him last season to Chelsea for £25m.

  • 104 jazzyp // Jun 30, 2013 at 5:21 PM

imo I would say the last transfer window was very fruitfull.although abeit to late it still saved us from the championship next season

  • 105 sparky55 // Jun 30, 2013 at 5:24 PM

Stuart No 9…yes…very sorry…I over-stepped the mark there and apologise unreservedly!

Bills-son…I’m not anti ashley…but the 5 year plan and transfer strategy blue print said he’ll buy cheap and sell high to bankroll the next acquisitions AND their wages in an effort for the club to become self financing…which I whole heartedly agree with by the way…so at some point he has to start selling.

Selling can be because (a) a player wants to leave or (b) part of the aforesaid strategy to raise the money for more player acquisitions as per the 5 year plan model, or (c) just to raise money so he can put it in the bank

We have yet to see the selling part of the cycle but we will this summer for sure but mainly IMO because I think three purples want to leave.

I again have no problem with that on the basis we get 6 players in so we are nett 3 players better off.

No ashley bashing here…just want to see him do what he said he was going to do and we have to be realistic in that it’s very difficult to keep players that are determined to move on
