Newcastle The First Choice Of Striker Target

10:22 am, Monday, July 1st, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 103 Comments

Newcastle are said to be the number one choice of 29 year-old striker Darren Bent – who returned from his honeymoon over the weekend, and now wants to get fixed up with a new club as quickly as possible.

darren bent at Villa

Darren Bent – no bids yet

There have been no bids yet for the England striker, who is still hoping to make the England World Cup squad next year in Brazil – although England are by no means certain to qualify for that tournament.

But Darren has told friends he is only interested in Newcastle if Alan Pardew is the manager, and of course, Pardew and Bent had an excellent partnership when Alan was managing Charlton Athletic, and Darren scored 37 goals in 79 appearances for the club, who were still relegated in 2007.

There are a number of fans against signing Darren Bent, but we think he would be a decent signing at around £5M as the second striker brought in this summer, with Newcastle hopefully also bringing in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
from St. Etienne.

Here’s the poll we had out on Darren bent this summer.

Should Newcastle Pay Out £5M For Darren Bent?

The Newcastle Journal is reporting today that former Managing Director Derek Llambias made contact with Aston Villa about a potential bid, before Derek resigned in protest at the shock appointment of Joe Kinnear, and showed that Newcastle are anything but a happy family at the moment.

i would rather see a top youngster than mr bent ,why are villa getting rid if he was as good as he use to be for me his best days are gone

  • 6 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:31 AM

I see the Journal have got Kinnear as going on a family break this weekend. That is the second holiday that they have reported him having since his arrival. I honestly hold zero hope for any incite or knowledge as to what the club are up to if they can’t even get this right.

I’m pretty sure the Ronny Hill announced Pardews return to work twice as well. The lot of them at Thomson hose are clueless.

On Darren Bent, 2million, performance related pay, 2 year deal, extension provided he hits certain performance targets. Otherwise, no thanks.

  • 7 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:31 AM

Swansea are hopeful of concluding deals for Bony and Redmond this week. They have no longer any interest in Gomis.

  • 8 DevonToon // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:33 AM

Graham Courtney reckons kurt zouma is a top up and coming striker! What a knob

  • 9 mikeashleyisamackem // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:36 AM

bent smells like patrick kluivert to me

  • 10 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:39 AM

Yeah, I have said that as long as we get good wide attackers in our midfield trio should be Anita Sissoko and Cabaye. All can do most jobs in the midfield, all can pass. It would create a fluid midfield where they can control possession and seamlessly cover each other or attack as required.

  • 11 Roblar80 // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:42 AM

Darren bent at £5m would be a good deal. This guy scores goals, proven in pl. if we bring in pea or another top striker then bent would be a very capable back up. Especially as we lose cisse and potentially pea for acon. With the players we have marveaux, Ben arfa, cabaye. All the ammunition bent would need. I think if cabaye leaves then tiote will be the force he once was. He tries too hard with cabaye alongside him. Sissoko can provide cover and share the burden with tiote. Just my humble opinion tho……

  • 12 hadthetshirt // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:42 AM

Well not the news I was hoping for.
If we sign him it means we have a good attacking winger though—Papiss Demba Cisse

  • 13 Markaccus // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:42 AM

I have never smelled either of them so i wouldnt know :-D

  • 14 Slank // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:43 AM

I looked at the club’s official website and at the first team and it lists as many strikers as goalkeepers. There was only Shola, Cisse and Gouffran. There can’t many premiership clubs with so few strikers.

Therefore, I would welcome Bent as we need to strike a balance between the very many midfield players and our very low number of strikers, but Bent should not be the only striker through door this transfer window.

Bent has an excellent strike rate in the premiership. Yes, he is getting on but so was RVP when ManU took him from Arsenal.

  • 15 Roblar80 // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:45 AM

Also. Would anyone take a cheeky punt on denilson from arsenal? Available on a free and capable of playing in pl. also young. I think he’s only 24

  • 16 Markaccus // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:46 AM

RVP and Bent in the same paragraph???

I know you were not really comparing them, i just thought i would be a pain!

  • 17 Slank // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:48 AM

    Sazzer @ 7

‘Swansea are hopeful of concluding deals for Bony this week. ‘

That’s interesting as Sky are reporting that they

‘… switched their attention to …after becoming frustrated in their attempts to sign Wilfried Bony…’

  • 18 Joe Blog // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:49 AM

For £5m I’m sure we could prise Shane Long away from Brom, given he’s entering the final year of his contract, or another alternative would be Gary Hooper, who’d cost around the same. If it had to be a domestic ST with that kind if price tag, I’d prefer those two over Bent, who is seemingly in the decline.

  • 19 John Tudor // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:52 AM

bent couldn’t score in a brothel especially as he is married now

  • 20 Slank // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:52 AM

    Markaccus @ 16

I was only trying to suggest that age (reasonable age) shouldn’t necessarily be a barrier. Shearer was knocking them in well after the age RVP and Bent are now.

Would RVP be as good as we was for ManU if he was in a mid table team like NUFC, I don’t know. Almost certainly not as prolific.

  • 21 Tommyy // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:52 AM

No thank you Bent, unless 2 mill and pay as you play. If he comes here it will be the beginning of the end. We’re in such a mess we need the right decisions. Starting with a new coach!

  • 22 Joe Blog // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:55 AM

Not to mention those two I doubt would want as much dosh as Bent, particularly Hooper.

Still, I’d prefer a technical target man to partner Cisse, if we’re going to return to 2 up top – god knows what Pardew is plotting.

  • 23 Markaccus // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:55 AM

I deffo agree bent could do a job for us (at a low price). As long as we sign another forward alongside him, i would not be too bothered.

  • 24 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:56 AM

I reckon we are going to end up getting Bent and Carlton Cole !

Boney and Redmond to Swansea !

PEA will end up at Everton !

Adam Mahler completed his move to PSV for 8 Mil this morning !

Dries Mertons has gone to Napoli !

Jermaine Lens has gone to Dynamo Kiev !

Erik Pieters has been signed by Stoke !

We have sold Simpson to QPR !

Llambias Quit when Kinnear was given his job !

Agree with Shane Long. He is a great forward. He is surprisingly good in the air for such a smallish forward, unlike Shola who is surprisingly bad for such a big forward.

Check out this site, a database of all the players in the world who only have a year remaining on their contracts – which obviously means discount – so I’m sure we’re giving some of these a lot of consideration!

Many very good players in that situation, this season!

PEA at 33 place on Goal ratio.

  • 45 pawl250 // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Why do people want this guy!

He contributes zero to the squad! He’s like an older Cisse! He is an instinct finisher!

The only problem is he has lost ALL of his pace from injuries at Villa!

I pray we are not in for him as he would be a gigantic waste of money, effort and time. Past his best we can get better players for the price quoted! Hell Belhanda was that price!

Think some people need to realise he is not the
Same player that got 20+ goals! His injuries have wrecked him!

Cannot believe the poll shows we support a buy! Unbelievable!

  • 46 Joe Blog // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:18 AM

You can scour all the leagues from around the world, just change the dropdown selection bar.. As for Nani, if he was allowed to leave Man U, unfortunately I’m sure he’d have more attractive options than us – non-starter.

I didn’t know Leroy Fer was entering his final year, we’ve been linked with him a few times in the past and again recently. I could definitely see him marked down as a potential Tiote replacement, in Carr’s little book of secrets.

That list is a bit of a joke really. Who in their right mind thinks Larrson is worth over 6 million, let alone Colback being worth more than 5.

That is without the fact that Nani has reportedly been told he can leave for around 8million. Still way out of our reach as he won’t sign a new deal at Man U because he wants in excess of 150,000 a week.

  • 52 pawl250 // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:27 AM

Look STOP believing everything the press writes!

They write it to feed gullible fools and sell papers in the process!

70-80% of the stories relating to transfers are fabrication! Only in the final stages are transfers out in the open world.

Time will tell who we are after but we probably have NEVER been in for the likes of Bony, Belhanda, Redmond, Bent and everyone else we have been linked with! Its all tripe!

Some people on here swear by it! Why not wait before u criticise the club for soemthing it never did!

They’ll still turn up though and effectively keep Ash going.
Empty seats is the only thing that will make Ash think how’s he treating the fans while being hit in his pocket.

The people who keep going and won’t stay away even just for a few games shouldn’t really moan when they continue to get s..t on.

No club on earth and I mean no club would employ one , let alone both an out of his depth manager and the neanderthal D.O.F we’ve been lumbered with.

  • 59 Spotlight Kid // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:43 AM

The fact fans are even talking about 29 year old Bent-out-of-shape being a good deal at £5m (even £2m) is a powerful argument why fans should never run a club.

However if he is being seriously considered to fill one of our traditional (obligatory) ‘past it, perpetually injured & mostly ineffective when fit anyway’ squad member slots* it would be yet another reason Ashley is nowhere near the entrepreneurial mega-brain Bills-son & Rooster would have us believe.

Let Hull or Palace have him, and ffs let’s move on.

    * – the list is depressingly long… Kluivert, Viduka, Owen, etc. zzzzzz.

Not seen any so called ITKs mention it but Kinnear has spoken to Molde about Orjan Nyland! No idea what their response was but hes quite high up the wanted list this summer….
Got a feeling Belhanda has gone to Kiev on astronomical wages, only explanation for it, hearing we didn’t even bid, reckon NUFC are being used alot by clubs an agents to drum up interest in their players!

  • 64 Marty-Toon // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:56 AM

Although i think he uses money onplayers that ain`t worth the amount they pay out i think all of us can say that Abramovich is a billionaire that has a passion for football and wants to win things.
    11 trophies in 10 years
Let`s see how many Mike Ashley will have in his first 10 years…..can`t see us getting 1
Would be nice to see him show some passion for the club moving forward,
not using 100 million but show the world and our best players that we`re moving forward.

Might be missing the point, but alot of ppl seem really anti ashley, i’m not sure why! We have a great squad, we all wanted a DoF and Llambias gone and we’ve got that! Fair enough Kinnear wdnt have been anyones choice but all hes really doing is running the rule over players pards and carr have scouted, its not like hes now head scout! Looks like his main target is PEA who we all want anyway! Most want pardew out, well JFK doesnt suffer fools and if we play next season how we did last season and hel make sure pards is gone whereas pardew was watertight under llambias! JFK is an upgrade (no matter how small) to llambias, think we should all give him a chance before putting the knife in! If on sept 1st we’re watchin bent, tomkins etc play hoofball and hba , cabaye, etc have gonethen faur enough have the ashley out canpaigns but how stupid will we all look if we are watching PEA, zouma, de jong etc? Hes got the job,Think he should be given a chance to fail or succeed before ppl overreact

  • 80 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 1, 2013 at 12:21 PM

  • 82 jayphoto // Jul 1, 2013 at 12:26 PM

Really think with the new tv deal that he ‘ll spend more than before! Im expecting 15m plus 15/20m of the cabaye money (really think hes gone) to be put back in! My point wasnt really about transfer budgets anyway , it was about giving JFK the chance to prove himself or fail as DoF! Seems to me anyone whos ever worked with him has glowing reports, takes a lot for joey barton to not slag someone off whilst having a pop at our board

Yeah, I guess Joe convincing Ash to spend 40 mill on duds is entirely plausible considering the laundry list of mishaps inflicted on us in recent years. Then again, I wouldn’t put it past him to shell out for exactly the right bodies either, probably out of sheer contrariness.

    Anyone here unemployed?

New vacancy just cropped up working at NUFC:

Job title – PA to Joe Kinnear

    Salary – NMW
    Hours – FT

    Duties include –

Giving Joe a morning sponge bath.

    Shaving his back.

Wiping his bum and in case of him soiling himself, changing his shreddies and washing the dirty ones, by hand, as Mike wont have a washer fitted as the leccy will cost too much.

Running errands to the nearest porn shop to buy him his daily smut rag and bringing him it in your mouth, on your hands and knees like a pooch.

Giving Joe booster English lessons – reading, writing and speaking.

    Who wants it?

  • 86 Rooster // Jul 1, 2013 at 12:35 PM

Rotonda, ITK, I prefer it as a bit of sixth sense ha ha, after all there are many who say there wont be any signings arnt there, its their opinion, as for Bent n Tomkins, they have both worked under Pardew with quote a bit of success, not my ideal choice by a long way, but Tomkins in for an outgoing Williamson, well hes better than willy, and Bent would almost certainly score more goals than wor Shola, but lets all wait and see.

The wait is unpleasant of course, but I feel we have to get new players in as early as possible.

    My preferred list would be

    Wijnaldum, top drawer.
    PEA,class act.
    Cardozo, real quality.
    vainquaer, (perch role but better)
another keeper, young alnwick not ready for understudy.
    Siam de jong, immense signing.
belhanda, quality player, great football brain.

We probably have targets that we are not aware of as well, Cardozo is the interesting one as he looked like a player who could fit in almost any team from what I have seen, maybe wants champs league footie? but the newspapers are reckoning between 10/15 million would get him through the door, a proper strong skillful aware and mega talented centre forward.

  • 87 Rooster // Jul 1, 2013 at 12:38 PM

Joe Blog, that job would be a beauty for our very own John Tudor, it would get him out of the house in his retirement, he n JK could spend all day on the debating table, with John givin it to JK with his sharp one liners, while wiping his of course ha ha!

  • 88 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 12:38 PM

First time I hear about Nyland being linked to us. Belhanda had no choice. Only Kiev and Al Yazeera met price tag and Montepellier wanted him gone.

  • 89 Joe Blog // Jul 1, 2013 at 12:38 PM

How is the list a joke? Because you perceive the players not be valued at those prices, which is of course subjective? Anyway, I was merely posting it to give everyone a source of info for who’s entering the final year of the contracts, can’t say I cast my eye over the valuation column, because I said, it’s an ambiguous factor.

Wasn’t having a pop at you there mate. Chill lad. Lots of people on here use that website as a valuation tool though. I’ve even seen some people label it the most accurate site for transfer values.

Anyway, I reckon there are maybe 4/5 players on that list that might interest the club, but unlikely to be enough to persuade us to part with money for.

I did notice Albrighton on it, what happened to him? 2 years ago he was being touted as the next big thing when he broke into the Villa team.

Where did.Nyland link come from? Any other info? I doubt it would be smart move since it would take up a foreign spot for reserve keeper.

pea / cisse and bent as 3rd choice with cambell covering ^^

would be a great signing imo and be everything shola should have been (experianced striker who can still score and is still not past it to teach cambell)

perfect for acon /cup cover also and a bully up front to give cisse the time and space he desperatly needs in tough games.

The Bent story just will not go away, wonder if Ashley is hanging on till the last minute, to see how many supporters say enough is enough & finally walk away! before he decides to spend some cash on players , but please not Bent or Spearing. However having supportd the Toon for over 55 years I am never surprised at what happens, from the McKeag days to the present nothing has changed, no one knows whats going on behind the scene, perhaps Carr is about to come up with something special, to give us all a boost or will see a sports flash that tells us some of our best players are gone and our dreams blown for another season.
