Wigan Lodge Formal Bid For James Perch

5:58 pm, Monday, July 1st, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 216 Comments

News coming through from the Daily Mirror that Wigan Athletic have put in a bid for Newcastle’s James Perch.

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Newcastle United v Liverpool - St James' Park

James Perch – Wigan put in formal bid

The report says that Wigan are waiting for a response from Newcastle, and of course Newcastle need to decide whether they will sell James this summer or lose him as a free agent next summer when his four-year deal runs out.

And James may be one of those players that new Director of Football Joe Kinnear says isn’t good enough to be at the club, but James is solid player who can play in many different positions, and he’s proved that since signing on from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2010.

He’s an excellent squad player and after a difficult first season, he has played well over the last two seasons, and we’d like to see him stay on Tyneside.

For the record, James has played 81 times for Newcastle with one goal in his three seasons on Tyneside, but he’s also picked up 21 yellow cards.

Reports coming out of France we have put an 18 mil bid in for PEA. Looks like the sale of Perch has “made all the difference” 700k to MA is complete pennies, personally there are a lot more players I would have shown the door to instead of perch!

  • 2 Macas // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:06 PM

Was far better than Tiote last season

  • 3 magicbus // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:07 PM

Thought Perchino did a good job for us in a varaiety of positions last season. Would prefer to see Shola Obertan and Gosling go before him.

  • 4 d122 // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:08 PM

An average player, Anita and Tiote over him. We can let him go.

  • 5 the truth will out // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:09 PM

pass the salt i’ll tack a pinch

  • 6 d122 // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:14 PM

If his sale provides the extra funds for Aubamayeng it will be worth it.

  • 7 tynesidetommo // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:15 PM

JP had a great season for us and doesn’t seem to mind being a squad player so why on earth would JFK want to sell him?. Keep hold of him. JP is solid and dependable. He’s also consistent while others let us down badly last season.

  • 8 Ibizatoon // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:16 PM

    Colin ?@cwarr07 Protected account 2m

Deal for Aubameyang involves Obertan joining Saint Etienne #NUFC

Too good to be true? Well, it is from Colin so probably.

  • 9 Cool Hand Luke // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:19 PM

Of all the so called “fringe” players, id like to see Perch leave the least. How many MOTM performances does it take to convince Pardew to start him?

  • 10 Levi // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:22 PM

Nooooooo. A player that lacks talent compared to some of our other players but has great drive. Him and Steven Taylor are players who will always give 100%. Just like Jonas. But if perch wants to live I think we should let him because he has been a true bent to newcastle

  • 11 Levi // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:23 PM

A true gentleman to Newcastle. Stupid auto correct

  • 12 croftus5678 // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:23 PM

aye agree perch is/was a solid performer as cover but i dont think anyone wanted him to be a starter just that tiote had such a bad season we thought perch should have been picked ahead of him.

personally if perch goes its a good thing as its more chances for bigi who could well become my hope for a toon english international.

but i would agree there are others in a perfect world i would have shipped out before perch ! suppose if the offer came in you can not guarentee it would happen again if it was turned down to move others on 1st.

  • 13 d122 // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:23 PM

I think Obertan deserves a chance, he played well in the Europa league last year

  • 14 geordiefromthemidlands // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:24 PM

    Kiss of death from colin.

  • 15 Burni // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:26 PM

I’d be a bit gutted if perch left. I think he has been very good since his first season. Solid. Dependable. Strong. IN MIDFIELD…. I’d rather guti… Tiote…. Gosling were to leave.

I realise guti isn’t exact match but still 🙂

  • 16 tequilamag // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:27 PM

Cooll Hand, Perch played 27 games last season 19 starts.
Great squad player but he is really there to fill in the gaps for injuries. Much better options in all the positions he plays.
Don`t want to sell him though.

  • 17 nightfa11 // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:28 PM

i agree…i think we should keep perch..

    1. hes english
    2. hes an ok sub
    3. doesnt cry to the press if hes on the bench..

gosling, shola, etc..are english players who we should sell..

    cabaye tiote sissoko
    subs: (marveaux, bigi, anita)

6 cms should be enough..(plus vuckic)

  • 18 darrenfletcher88 // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:30 PM

Where’s these reports coming about pea?are is it just more crap????

  • 19 Slank // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:32 PM

After a shaky start Perch grew into a very effective utility player when injuries robbed the team of first choice players.

He will probably leave as he can get regular starts at Wigan unlike with us.

  • 20 Santon03 // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:34 PM

I think this guy will be 1st signing then PEA

  • 21 JackButler // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:35 PM

We cannot sell Perch for such a pathetic amount of money!!!

For me there are a number of our so called star players that I’d get shot of first, at least Perch can say that he’s improved over the past few seasons unlike most of the squad we have

  • 22 JackButler // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:39 PM

So far we are signing 46 players and selling 17???

  • 23 Santon03 // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:39 PM

probably will lose Cisse and Cabaye

  • 24 gndtoon // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:52 PM

Cheikhou Kouyaté — hope we go after this beast, in the last year of his contract. haven’t heard his name yet this window (which is a good sign) better and cheaper than zouma

  • 25 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:52 PM

I agree that the fee for Perch is low and I agree he have been great utility player for the squad we had.

But since we bought Debuchy, Haidara, Bigi, Anita, Sissoko and Mbiwa is there really a need for him?

I would say no. He also in his last year of his contract.

Gosling is going, Obertan is going. Amalfitano is going. Abeid is going. If to believe rumours.

So it’s not like he going before them, just perhaps easier to get rid of him since he’s good utility player.

  • 26 Zero // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:54 PM

Perch was one of the more consistant players last season and really didnt shame himself like other players. It’d be a crying shame if we sold him before the likes of Jonas, Obertan, both sholas. Hes not the best but certainly fills the criteria for a decent sub for if things are going wrong i.e. injury or suspension.

  • 27 Markaccus // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:54 PM

If perch leaves for wigan, we should try and replace him with a solid english squad player who can play in a few roles and has an excellent attitude and team ethic. I think the best option would be to contact wigan and see if they will sell us James Perch…..

  • 28 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:55 PM

I’m expecting these players to leave:

Perch (has done well for us, but £700k isn’t much at all)
    Shola Ameobi

  • 29 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:55 PM

Out of all are fringe players perch is the one i wouldn’t sell, great covering player gives 100% and always puts in a solid performance much rather see gosling go tbh

Mind couldn’t blame him for leaving if he could get 1st team football

  • 30 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:55 PM

Add Kouyaté, Zouma, Sakho, Sané and young FB and there is even less room for Perch.

  • 31 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:56 PM

Cabaye, Tiote and Gutierrez will all probably leave, so we need to sign at least 6/7 first teamers and 3 young prospects.

  • 32 NUFCarter // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:57 PM

    Good news for Newcastle perhaps.

  • 33 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:57 PM

I didn’t mean we get all of them but one or two. I have feeling some 10 %:ers might…yeah.

  • 34 Zero // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:57 PM

lol @Markaccus, i was going to say something similar… just think how much itd cost to replace him ‘like for like’, i still regret us getting rid of the likes of Barton and Nolan, would have been perfect bench players coming on to really shake up a game.

  • 35 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:58 PM

Any evidence of Jonas leaving or is it wishful thinking?

  • 36 Zero // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:59 PM

Kets have you taken your meds today, Newcastle will not allow players to leave ‘enmass’ like you suggest, i very much doubt cabs will leave, nor will we sell him when his value has been damaged after a poor season…makes more sense to give him a season to increase his stock then sell him

  • 37 Markaccus // Jul 1, 2013 at 6:59 PM

I dont know like, a versatile player like him is almost certain of a place on the bench… if he is happy with that we should keep him. I will be disapointed to see him go. If he wants to go (hed get every game in the chapionship imo) the i supppse its fair enough. He has more than earned our respect and thanks.

  • 38 Rotonda heights // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:01 PM

Numpty Pardew always played Perch and others ahead of Anita, so I’m not too disappointed. Good lad and a trier but not really premiership class. A bit like when Pardew played Mullins instead of Mascherano.

If Pardew had anything about him he’d walk, but he hangs round like a bad smell. No pride, just misplaced arrogance.

  • 39 Markaccus // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:01 PM

Aaron hughes. Andy griffin. We have had a few versatile squad players who never let us down, yet we always seem to get rid.

  • 40 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:02 PM

Would you sell Cabaye if a £20m+ bid comes in? I would. We can get Benteke in for around £18m. Forget about Aubameyang, Benteke is proven.

  • 41 roshan MAGPIE // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:03 PM

extension in his contract he is a really good squad player and since we always loose players because of injuries he can come in and do a great job

  • 42 JackButler // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:04 PM

I wouldn’t be surprised if Anita wanted out, Pardew obviously doesn’t like the guy and he was wasted last season as Pardew stuck with his favored players despite their lack of form

  • 43 roshan MAGPIE // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:04 PM

I think perch must get extension in his contract he is a really good squad player and since we always loose players because of injuries he can come in and do a great job

  • 44 JackButler // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:04 PM

Benteke would have bigger and better options than us Ket’s

  • 45 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:04 PM

When are people going to stop going on about MA’s money?

You all know that he’s running the club as a proper business. So any money that is spent is the club’s money. He isn’t taking a salary from the club and from what I’ve seen in the accounts, he’s only taken back about £15M so far which is to pay off some of the interest free loan.

Sure, it would be nice if he would spend about £20M a year of his own money to help grow the club but I don’t blame him for not doing that when so many of the fans keep slagging him off.

From what I remember, that was what he originally said he’d do. But that was in the days that he was sitting in the stands as one of the fans. Then he unfortunately became one of the fans, brought back KK, and then realised that KK’s way of working just doesn’t wash in the modern footballing world.

For anyone disagreeing with me on this point, please do tell me what club KK has managed since, and please do tell me what success he has had apart from 2nd place at Newcastle and getting Fulham promoted…

I’m not slagging him off, he’ll always be a NUFC legend in my eyes for the first time he was managing us, but just because he’s a legend, that doesn’t make him the right choice to be our manager in the 21st century.

  • 46 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:05 PM

    Villa want 25 m £ for Benteke.

  • 47 OhSholaAmeobi // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:05 PM

Maher just signed for PSV, Mertens just signed for Napoli, Isimat-Mirin went to Monaco, Chedjou went to Galatasaray. Oh and Belhanda signed for Kyiv. You snooze, you lose.

Will be fuming if we let perch go for any less than 2m. He was one of our best players last year and if you watch him he keeps it simple, very rarely gives it away and puts himself about. Would sell Gosling and Jonas before him of the midfielders.

  • 48 jazzyp // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:05 PM

evening guys-no big signings on the 1st day of the transfer window I see.
on perchinio I thought his first season after we signed him from forest,he was pretty poor.but to his credit imo has become one of our better squad players who frequents the subs bench
he offers more to the squad than the likes of Jonas-obertan-gosling and was of a better standard than a certain tiote last term, but from previous campaigns would not sell tiote

  • 49 Zero // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:05 PM

Aye Markaccus, i think its all very ironic that pards wants a ‘English’ team with grit and fight, literally just after we sold all our English gritty players lol Nvm hopefully Perch will sign a new contract and provide the loyal service to the club as always, however i dont believe he should be starting ahead of the likes of Anita, but hes exactly what we need in terms of ‘Depth’ to the squad, covering multiple positions to a decent level

  • 50 Cool Hand Luke // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:06 PM

Tequilamag, I just remember a few totally dominant performances by him over the past few years, and some excellent tackles put in, liverpool last year for example. Hes not always the choice for a CB and hes pretty poor at RB, but holding in the middle of the park ive been nothing but impressed by him, his pass completion and tackling stats back this up. Hes not flash, wins the ball back and gives the short pass. To me that’s far better than Tiotes total liability act.

  • 51 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:07 PM

Hughes and Griffin were very poor. We made a mistake getting rid of Boumson, Domi, Acuna, N’Zogbia, Laurent Robert etc. They were great players. Olivier Bernard shouldn’t have gone to Soton.

  • 52 Zero // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:08 PM

Kets Benteke = 25 million and he aint as good as Cabs when cabs is inform…seriously 1 bad season and people want to sell him for 25million…. do you seriously think if we sold him for 25 mill we’d buy a player for 25 mill… itd be a make shift replacement at best probs about 5-10million.

  • 53 OhSholaAmeobi // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:08 PM

If we’re going 4-3-3 we need to have 6 centre mids – Cabs, Tiote, Sissoko, Anita, Perch and Bigirimana. Simple as.

  • 54 jazzyp // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:09 PM

    zero-agree totally
he is one of the most improved players and definitely one of the more consistent players from last seasons campaign

  • 55 JackButler // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:11 PM

    PEA off to Dortmund?

  • 56 Rotonda heights // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:12 PM

    NUF carter

if we want to play good football in a 433 it has to be PEA.
Bony although prolific is slow and would encourage more hoof ball it that were possible!

  • 57 Markaccus // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:14 PM

No. Hughes and griffin were not poor. Yoi dont know better than SBR did. Then you follow it up by saying we should have kept Boumsong. A cluster fk as a defender. N zogbia left because he was a childish stroppy cnt at the time. The jfk mis pronounce was a pathetic excuse. He proved this by moving to wigan and not a big club. You really are detached from reality at times.

  • 58 Zero // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:14 PM

JB they apparently met at the weekend according to other papers… PEA and his agent have already stressed his next move will be to the EPL…. and why would Dortmund want him…. they have Lewandowski and 2 other guys who would most likely get a game ahead of him.

  • 59 IITianToon // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:16 PM

Colin what an idiot! Though I haven’t unfollowed him yet 😀

  • 60 Markaccus // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:16 PM

Bernard admits himself he fkd up his own career. We offered him a new deal. He admits he was to greedy and should have accepted it.

  • 61 Markaccus // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:18 PM

I keep following him simply because of the entertainment he provides!

  • 62 tequilamag // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:18 PM

Cool Hand, funny thing perception, you think he does not get enough starts Rotunda thinks he is a Pardew favourite who always gets picked ahead of Anita.
I agree he is much better at CM rather than defence and think he has done more than enough to earn a new contract.
We have very few English players and I don`t see the sense in letting him go. But with a fully fit squad he would not be in my starting 11. I think Tiote is still a better option but even if you leave him out of the equation Sissoko would still get the nod ahead of him.

  • 63 JackButler // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:19 PM

Lewandowski could well be off this summer and money talks regarding where PEA will go, I’d love to see him come here but think we are gonna be left reeling again after failing to land our top target’s

  • 64 geordiefromthemidlands // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:19 PM

Vanquier has signed an extension with liege

  • 65 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:20 PM

Add De Jong to that list, add Marveux to that list… and Perch is number 7 unless one prefers him over selling one of the others.

  • 66 Zero // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:22 PM

JB could well be true Lewandowski is going but, itll take around 40mill to shift him, with that kind of money why go for a 15mill player, i dont think Dortmund fans would be happy with such a short changing after all the disgruntling over selling players to their main rivals only to get beat off them in the league and CL.

My worry is its starting to shape up like the Debs and Luuk de Jong sagas again and we may well lose out to him… if that happens who will we be targeting in our price bracket?

  • 67 OhSholaAmeobi // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:22 PM

Who’s De Jong signing for? I know Lens went to Kyiv too and Bony is on the verge of Swansea. We’re dillydallying too much. Yeah I guess Marveaux is better in the middle. Just illustrates our lack of out and out wingers too though haha.

@KHeneage: William Vainqueur will not be coming to #NUFC. He has signed a new deal at Standard Liege. @d_demyttenaere with the details.

  • 70 Zero // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:24 PM

@ Saz; a transfer window where we get PEA and Siem de Jong and i think id forgive all that MA has done in the past, providing we dont lose any main players aswell.

  • 71 Rotonda heights // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:28 PM

Ba wasn’t a problem. He just didn’t like the way Pardew had us playing. Who did?

  • 72 JackButler // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:28 PM

Dortmund are well known for having a history of buying cheap and selling for massive amount’s, it’s how they run the club and the Dortmund fan’s would’t bat an eye at loosing Lewandowski for 40 million and having PEA as his replacement.

We’ve been kicked in the teeth so many times with Ashley failing to land the players we go after and still they come out with the pathetic ‘We couldn’t get the deal over the line’ BS and I can’t see Kinnear making things any better

  • 73 sparky55 // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:29 PM

The 5 year plan doesn’t allow for buying £20 million players. If we get say £18 million for Cabaye (then that money buys two players and pays for their wages for the next 3 years.

If we get say 10 million for Tiote…that’ll buy one good player and wages

If we get say 15 million for Cisse…that’ll buy two medium priced players and we have a squad 3 players stronger.

    IMO that’s how it’ll work.

I think Ashley has sanctioned a large lump of money for a very good striker, the rest will be financed by selling the players we bought cheap and now sell for decent money.

IMO it’s bye bye Cabs, bye bye Tiote and bye bye Cisse and hello 6 players in exchange

  • 74 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:31 PM

It was and illustrative point. If we were to sign De Jong he would be add to that list. If we sign PEA, Marv will most likely play AM. Mbiwa and Debuchy can play there as well if we sign another defender.

  • 75 Zero // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:32 PM

JB, then we have nothing to loose by being optimistic… i personally dont think we will get all or even half the players we really need or deserve…. but im happy thinking hell anything is better than nothing, and if MA fails to invest again i hope we are relegated to force a ground up rebuild…again! only this time do it right. At the end of the day relegation and rebuild is better than sticking our heads in the sand thinking everything is ok whilst continuing to flirt with relegation.

  • 76 JackButler // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:34 PM

By all accounts our new Director of Football Mr.s Kinnear is off on holidays with his wife at the end of this week!!!

  • 77 Zero // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:35 PM

I thought Joker was currently on Holiday? and due to come back when the TW opens along with having a meeting with Pards?

  • 78 sparky55 // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Rotonda…you’re right about Ba and that’s why IMO cisse and cabs are also pissed off and want to leave

  • 79 OhSholaAmeobi // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:37 PM

To be fair centre mid isn’t a problem position, just Perch has done well there and isn’t the best player to sell for a profit.
Well we’ve lost Simpson, Raylor’s practically out for the season and Tavernier isn’t good enough. Either Dummett’s gonna get a chance or we buy a young defender.
Winger/Forward like Auba is essential but it’s looking less and less likely we’ll get a £12-15m quality one.

Selling Williamson/Gosling/Obertan for 5m and bringing in Zouma, Aubameyang and a winger like Biabany would set us back 25m, which is easily recoverable with a good table finish, a cup run and TV fees.

  • 80 gazzaforever // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:37 PM

We shoud try Thauvin , from Lilles. He just signed therebut the club needs cash urgently. Alessandrini is great too. And Remy.

  • 81 Zero // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:37 PM

  • 84 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:42 PM

  • 90 G // Jul 1, 2013 at 7:52 PM

Back to the story, I can’t believe even though he’s starting the last year of his contract JP is worth only 700k. He was shocking when we first signed him as an RB, but in my opinion the last 2 years, particularly when he was deployed as a DM he has been one of our best performers. I know it will give Vernon Anita a better opportunity of a start next season, but personally I would rather see JP retained as cover for VA, and Tiote sold for big money (based on last season, that’s unlikely though). I do hope JP goes on to bigger and better things, unlike our last export to Wigan.

Jono we are not 267 mill in debt, the debt we do have(130 mill) was ran up by Sheperd and has been covered by interest fee loan. If and when MA sells up it would be covered in the selling price. well it was debt but structured and secured against hall land so they got a secured loan at lower cost and the repayments were levied against the stadium extension so if the club failed to pay the loan the financier would take control of the seat sales, and get their money that way so they could not loose, half the £7m debt was for a well known Welshman.

  • 125 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 8:54 PM

I also think Kinnear is different in that he’s understand the manager POV better than Llambias.

We had a history of playing quality players out of position and callig them s*hie back then, bobby Robson was guilty of this too. Playing Hugh’s at right back instead of Center and also viana on the left instead of letting him pull the strings in the middle. Also many other young players where ruined because of this.

  • 148 tequilamag // Jul 1, 2013 at 9:23 PM

Ftman sorry but your logic makes no sense xisco cost 5 mill and wages were 2,5 mill per year so 17 mill for fee and wages over contract. A small amount of the overall debt was accrued from the relegation season so arguably MA can take some of the blame for that but the vast majority of the debt was ran up before he took control. MA paid all the creditors in full and for accounting purposes is lodged against the club. As this soft loan accrues no intetest we gain. Of course MA raises the profile of SD so it can hardly be called a free gift.
This whole issue has been hone through on this site so many times it is beyond dull.
But if you are correct that the stadium debt does not count then why the hell am I paying my mortgage like a sucker. I will ring up my bank tomorrow and tell them it does not count.

  • 149 bills-son // Jul 1, 2013 at 9:23 PM

Perch’s best position is central defence imo not CM. He reads the game well, is very good at intercepting passes and plays excellent short passes to the midfield. At £700K he is an absolute steal.

If he was 2/3 inches taller with a bit more pace he could be another Woodgate.

  • 153 Sack Llambias // Jul 1, 2013 at 9:26 PM

According to data from, Newcastle suffered 41 significant injuries last term – the highest in the top flight.

The total number of days lost to long-term injuries was 1,745, by far the largest amount in the league. Wigan Athletic were next with 1,281.

Key players like Tim Krul, Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa, Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini were all sidelined at times, while Ryan Taylor and Haris Vuckic missed the entire season.

Players were dropping like flies, and it is clear something needs to be done this summer in an attempt to rectify the problem.

Can it just be bad luck? In terms of days lost, Newcastle had the fourth highest amount in 2011/12, so there is a clear pattern.

The figure from 2011/12 was increased by almost 40 per cent last season to leave Newcastle by far and away the most injury-hit club in the Premier League.

Physio Dave Henderson left the club last week to join SPL side Hibernian, although it is thought his departure had been planned for some time. When Joe Kinnear took over as director of football, he promised to assess all areas of the club, although the fitness department was not something he mentioned.

It must surely be near the top of his agenda, though, because as the figures show, injuries adversely affect clubs off the pitch as well as on it.

some fickle fans eh, we won’t be bringing any 1 in as long as MA is concerned, we already have the players bought in from January that was suppose to be bought in this season, we have all the positions filled by MA expense so what makes us all think he will bring anybody in now, he could but he won’t end off.

    1) 2 players out of contract, did he go for them?NO, why? he didn’t want to pay high wages or increase the wage budget.

    2) we’ve been linked with 20+ players according to BS newspaper and has Newcastle confirmed any of this?NO, why? because MA wants to get our hopes up only just to sit back and laugh at us.

    3) why on Earth would any quality players would want to come to this club and waste there time and talent on a club that only has supporters with real ambition whilst the chairmen is tighter than SCROOGE and never delivers on his promises.

    4) why on Earth would top players want to come to a club filled with Sunday leagues coaches and a manager who thinks the word ( sky’s the limit ) is an actual technique formation.

It would be nice to have Pardew or even Kinnear giving us at least their thoughts on transfers. Kinnear gave some interviews a couple of weeks ago, but in reality he wasn’t properly engaged in his role then.
Even if one of them were to come out and say that they feel that the squad is as it should be, I would be fine with that. At least we would know what’s going on. What’s killing is that we’re out in the dark not knowing where the club stands at present.

Thought this may be helpful as some people found it the other day. This chat about debt is pointless – the reason for the structuring is tax.

If Ma bought club for 100m and then pumped in 100m as a loan then when he sells up, none of that will be taxable as the loan return isn’t taxable and neither is the initial price under capital gains tax.

If he bought for 100m and pumped in 100m as a gift and then sold for 200m, the second 100m would be taxable as it would effectively count as a 100m profit.

Anyone that thinks Ashley is taking money out or got us in more debt etc is deluded – the key point is that it is interest free. I have absolutely no objection to Ma using a tax efficient structure

And kets for Christ sake please stop chatting about Benteke – they has slapped 30m on his head and he would demand huge wages. No way it will happen so please stop suggesting it

  • 179 King Arfa // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:10 PM

Toon 252 if only that where true big lad something has to give this week killing me seeing everyone else doing business while we stand still as per usual leave it till last min or worse January!!

  • 180 BandB // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:10 PM

If I were a football club owner with a particular buying policy, and had, for example, paid £8m for a Dutch international on the recommendation of a highly-trusted scout, I’d wonder why he wasn’t getting game.
Anita, Marv and even Ben Arfa to some degree, have been victims of what most of us have from time to time called an “odd” selection and substitution policy.
I’d want to see my assets getting a show and not losing value while parked behind players who may have little resale value. You can’t tell the manager who to pick.
But you can take away his options by moving out his favourites.
I’d be very surprised if we saw an “English invasion” at the club to please the manager, as I think his stock is the lowest of everyone who’s still there.

  • 181 Rooster // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Maybe the Perch deal involves money and one of Wigans players, they have some very canny players on their books! so maybe perch and a couple of million for one of their players, I liked a few of their players, my fav of theirs was malhony but he is 28 I think but its not that old in todays terms, we desperately need a good cover goalkeeper as young Alnwick is not ready at the moment.

  • 182 bills-son // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:14 PM

How come some of you think that there is no chance Benteke would come to us but believe that PEA might?

  • 183 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:15 PM

Getting us, Fulham and City promoted to the top flight spending large amounts of money on players are hardly things that justify recruiting a manager to get a club into the CL. Keegan did brilliantly in the first few years, with fantastic exciting signings and a dynamic style of play. But football has moved on and those times have gone I’m afraid. I think he was an awful appointment the second time, and I really think it was MA trying to be popular.

£267M debt is just book keeping, £137M of that is the purchase price. And the debt and destruction of our squad happened before MA took over. Check out the squad back then and the huge wages they were on.

We’ve fallen behind because of inconsistent finishes in the league. Look at the incredibly consistent finishes from Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool, Utd and Chelsea over the last 10 years. Bet there are none out of the top 8.

  • 184 stan anderson // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:16 PM

Perch has turned out to be a useful member of the squad and is versatile, unless someone coming in better than him he should not be moved on,especially at that money

  • 185 jimmysmith // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:22 PM

Hee, hee, Mikey did get his fingers burnt early doors, didn’t he, still smarting I bet. sigh!!!!

  • 186 p // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:24 PM

@173, I think that is bollox.

From an accounting perspective if Mash sends a check for 100m to NUFC as a gift that has to be accounted for.

If it was not a loan, it would likely be a capital injection which would count as part of his cost when calculating capital gains at sale.

The difference with a loan is that it can be secured on assets and be way ahead of shareholders when it comes to recovering money in the event of bankruptcy.

I am not an expert on the financial status of NUFC but I am not so sure capital gains avoidance is the main factor here. It is likely to be MA’s exposure of financial risk to NUFC. Since he is a 100% shareholder, he get’s 100% of the profit regardless so there is no additional profit reward for that additional shareholdings. This is probably why the loan is interest free anyway.

He wants to limit his financial exposure to the club (by giving a loan vs. additional capital) but is not saddling it with unnecessary additional debt (by charging interest on that loan).

  • 187 bills-son // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:26 PM

I wonder how Perch has improved so much?

Might have bought The Dummies Guide to Football….

Can’t have been anything to do with dumbars Pardew and his coaching staff.

  • 188 p // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:27 PM

bills-son – PEA is not proven in the premiership, Benteke is.

He has a much higher price tag, I think there is consensus on that.

PEA, could use us as a stepping stone, Benteke probably has already used Villa as his.

  • 189 Taking the Papiss // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:28 PM

I used the term Ma in a misleading way and apologise – but the lending entity is a corporate as well rather than him in his personal capacity and a group company at that – it is the reason for use of loan – the fact it is secured is irrelevant unless the co enters liquidation as the only shareholder and lender he would have priority anyway you look at it!

  • 190 p // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:29 PM

I thought perhaps a Wigan player might be coming the other way.

I know Taylor came in exchange for Insomnia but there is bad blood between Toon and Wigan and that gives me pause on that as a likely scenario

  • 191 bills-son // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:31 PM

P – Messi isn’t proven in the Premiership.

  • 192 p // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:32 PM

TP – still don’t see your angle. Is this your assertion or did you read it somewhere?

  • 193 p // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:37 PM

    bills-son – silly analogy don’t you think?

Messi is proven in Champions league, Spanish league which is regarded considerably better than the French League and, is the first person on the Argentinean team sheet. Argentina are ranked 3rd, Gabon 82nd.

Additionally Messi has won a ridiculous amount of personal and team honors.

  • 194 Sazzer // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:43 PM

I don’t like this proven thing. Look at Liverpool, they are going to do much better this year with all the cheaper unproven players they have bought then all the proven PL they have acquired in recent years,

    Carroll was proven…

  • 195 aidytoon9 // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:43 PM

Kone to Everton will happen within the week, confirms Owen Coyle.

  • 198 jimmysmith // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:44 PM

Surely you wouldn’t pay capital gains tax on any existing debt you pay off after purchase, whether it be in the case of a loan or gift, in the event of a sale. Seems more about tax breaks and juggling money. Isnt the purchase price actually cash paid plus existing debt and capital gains paid simply on resale price beyond initial purchase price.

  • 199 Taking the Papiss // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:45 PM

My understanding from working in a related industry. Loans are by far the most tax efficient way to invest money. As principle repayments under a loan attract no interest whatsoever

  • 200 Taking the Papiss // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:47 PM

My understanding is that the debt that he acquired wouldn’t have been part of purchase price as it forms separate repayments – this was done by way of dividend. Distributions to shareholders (or same as repayments under a loan) are also taxable.

  • 201 Taking the Papiss // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:48 PM

    Of loan sorry

  • 202 stan anderson // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:51 PM

Would sooner see Shola given a free transfer as Perch moved on.Shola was dscribed on here as a goalscorer by some blogger the other night haha

  • 203 p // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:54 PM

Sazzer, just to be clear, I am not saying I agree on the proven/unproven thing but I think it is generally regarded as the case that those with premiership experience do command a higher price just like it is accepted that English players command a higher price.

That does not mean shola would cost more than messi though

There are other factors also including the selling club, length remaining on contract etc.

Looking at a website though Benteke is only values at 12m EUR vs, 15m EUR ofr PEA.

Still, I just could not see Villa sell him for that.

  • 204 Honoured2BNUFC // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:55 PM

Kets ffs STOP MENTIONING REMY, the man is on a rape charge-until that is cleared he will not be a target-you’re like a broken bloody record. Do you even think before you type these players we should/should not sign? Give it a rest.
In other news came across article saying Kinnear wants a signing by Friday-hoping somethings in that, could do with something positive coming through the club, it’s too quiet at the moment.

  • 205 jimmysmith // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:55 PM

Love Shola, but if he remains one of our top two go to strikers come seasons start, I’ll struggle to muster the enthusiasm to get out of bed each day.

  • 206 pawl250 // Jul 1, 2013 at 10:58 PM

Toon 252 you are so full of it!

Stop talking tripe! You only cause discontent amongst the fans when they find its a load of bull.

  • 207 p // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:02 PM

    Still don’t get it.

If he loans – he pays capital gains on only his shareholding but the loan has to repaid so the sale price will be less.

He invests, he pays capital gains on the sale price less his investment including the bit that he is not loaning now.

Both dividends and interest are taxed at source.

Loans are generally lower risk (for the loaner) but less return as it is normally fixed. Investment (equity) is regarded as higher risk and higher return – you can lose it all but, you also get a full share of profits unlike loaners.

Ashley gets 100% of the profits of Newcastle whether he loans the money or invests it.

Loaning is likely a simpler transaction from a legal company perspective also.

So why bother to invest it?

I don’t think this principle changes regardless of what vehicle/corporate structure owns it. This may defer tax but probably not avoid it.

  • 208 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:06 PM

@RBairner: #Lorient president @LoicFery has announced his side turned down a bid of greater than £10m for an unnamed player. #Aliadiere?

@RBairner: Maybe reading too much into it, but the fact he gave the figure in £ rather than € hints bid was made by an English club.

    Oh please god no…….

  • 209 jimmysmith // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:08 PM

I think it would definitely have crossed our very arbitrary owners mind that we have 4 strikers in Cisse, Gouffran, Shola “good grief” and “gulp” young Adam Campbell, and why isn’t that enough? Chilling!

  • 210 Galtierez // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:10 PM

We have these players as home grown.

    R Taylor
    S Taylor
We look like we will be left with Krul, Elliot, Bigi and Steven Taylor. The rest are either going to be sold or loaned out. Also Ryan Taylor will not have a squad number next season due to injury.
Being as we need 8 home growns, I would love to know what is going on. Also to sell Perch for £700,000 is as bad as selling Aaron Hughes for a million, all those years ago. You can’t buy a loyal squad player for that money, unless you buy off NUFC.

  • 211 gfp13 // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:14 PM

Tbh I would say its too early to call benteke proven he has had 1 season. You never know if he’s gonna do the same next season or not. But his price is going to be sky high due to last season. Aubameyang price also seems to be very high tho so maybe worth looking into

  • 212 Taking the Papiss // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:19 PM

Equity is only a better option if shares are readily tradable – in this case the aren’t.

Shareholder equity is not tax free on return hence why cos use intranet group tax free loans to fund each other… Loans are much more complicated from a legal perspective than just an equity injection and issuance of more shares or increased premium on shares.

  • 213 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:23 PM

No way are we buying Benteke. Villa will be targeting top 8 too, why would he leave for a club not in Europe? And there’s no way we will spend £15M+ on the basis of one excellent season.

We’re trying to sign players like him as he was a year ago. That boat has sailed, people need to move on from the obvious Championship Manager style targets.

  • 214 jimmysmith // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:24 PM

ok, but aren’t Ashley’s bean counters just saving money wherever they can, as you’d expect from any well run business, and this notion that Ashley has “pumped” 250 mill plus into Newcastle semantics when he’s actually just bought it and cleared the debt, effectively shuffling cash and tangible assets.

  • 215 p // Jul 1, 2013 at 11:31 PM

Well TP, unless you have a link to a credible article where someone has researched both what Mash has done specifically and why he has done it, you are not going to get me onside with somewhat generic statements.

For equity, he can just increase the allotted shares if he wants, with a private company you not even need to file anything with respect to the articles to do this.

As for a loan, it is not that complicated when you are effectively loaning money to yourself with no bank involved + you have full time Corporate lawyers on your payroll.

As I said, I think he has loaned the money because it is straight-forward and a risk averse way of funding the club beyond his initial investment.

If we are to believe it is more tax efficient to loan vs. invest capital, I think you need to better explain the tax benefits of doing so.

Or perhaps not. Maybe we should stick to talking about hypothetical transfers, what a knob JFK is etc etc.

  • 216 Sazzer // Jul 2, 2013 at 12:06 AM

Yeah, I think we agree. Benteke is out of our reach unless we pay silly money or do a RVP. Rivarly and economic resources determine prices. Villa and us is both rivals and have similar amount of resources. That’s usully there worst set up for deal. It can happen but it will be most likely for silly money or contract loopholes.
