Kinnear Clear-Out Begins – Perch Off To Wigan Against Pardew’s Wishes

The Joe Kinnear era as Newcastle’s Director of Football has started, and while we seem to have missed out on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, one of our dependable if not great players at the club – James Perch, has officially signed for Wigan Athletic.

james perch 99

James Perch – now a Wigan player

Perch was signed by Chris Hughton from Nottingham Forest in July of 2010 for around £1M, and in his three seasons on Tyneside he made 81 appearances with one goal.

James will be a terrific signing for Wigan at around £700K, and he had this to say on their web-site today:

“It feels great to be here with a new challenge ahead of me, and I’m very excited at getting that started,” “The prospect of helping to get the team promoted was really appealing and I can’t wait to meet the rest of the boys and get started.”

“I think Wigan Athletic is a great club and after speaking with the manager, his ambition and determination to take the club back to the Premier League where it belongs is something I wanted to be a part of.”

It’s important to remember that in March of this year Alan Pardew wanted to extend James’ contract, which would have ran out next summer, but Mike Ashley said no.

So there’s no doubt that Alan’s power at Newcastle has been cut, not to mention he now has to work for a guy like Joe Kinnear – and that cannot be pleasant – although Joe may come out soon and say he’s the best man to work for in all of football.

James had a tough first season on Tyneside, but he then played very well for Newcastle over the last two years under Alan Pardew, and proved he was a valuable and dependable member of the squad.

We wish James all the best at his new club.

This is totally fine as long as he is replaced with a better player.

No point getting equal quality or a worse player.

Ed this is speculation, why add smoke without
    Fire?

Where did Pardew say he wanted to keep Perch? Oh that’s right he didn’t you have no idea if he did or not!

Stirring the pot, like others do by making things up on this blog!

I may get a lot of hate for this, but…

Perch was average. He’s an average player who was on the last year of his contract and probably wanted either more wages or a promise of more first team football. The only reason he ever seemed good was due to the fact that he was decent in an absolutely dreadful team which made him stand out. This gave him a fan favourite status and fair to him he gave his all each and every match.

1 million for an average player on the last year of his contract who wants more first team football is absolutely fine by me. He was getting played over the likes of Anita who is far better anyway.

Next on the list is Squidward.

Im sad about this, I liked Perch.

I read an article somewhere about bgi successful teams relying on players like Perch to be the oil in the machine which helps the rest of the team function. I certainly think he was one of those important players, and I hope the team doesnt suffer because of him going.

Having said that, we’ve got Bigi and Anita like others are saying, and they have been brought in to be the future of the club so lets see them step up.

    I’m gutted.

Ginger, no stick from me but average? Maybe not.. The guy gave some stellar performances at times. I agree Anita is a good prospect but perch is a great utility player who we could rely on. He became consistent…. Anita wasn’t consistent at all.

Someone else said we need to replace him with someone better…… You know for q fact that’s not happening

I do agree with Kinnear on this one, he was one of Pardews favourites used to get a place in the team when he shouldn’t have done …Perch is no more than a championship full back…as soon as he got the ball he used to get rid of it sideways or back and had no technical ability. On the plus side though he did improve whilst he was here and was fairly dependable but not premiership class.. Guthrie used to stand in better when Tiote was out, for example.

to say that this is definitely against Pardews wishes is out of order. At some point Bigirimana becomes a better player than Perch, and to this effect Perch becomes surplus. He was entering the final year of his contract and not guaranteed first team football. Transfer -wise no teams have as yet had serious ins and outs, and as usual the work done behind the scenes only shows when they arrive for a medical anyway.

    Hold up Ed.

Where exactly has the ‘against Pardew’s wishes’ bit come from?

Perch was always going to be sold this summer, we were not going to give him another contract, but there is no way Ashley would allow a player to leave on a free, he would rather get the cash now and also save on a years wages.

I don’t believe there is anything sinister in this sale.

Perch i a good lad, but for me this is the right thing to do.

IMO one of the major problems last season was that in time of crisis the fringe players were not good enough and most of the youngsters needed to go out on loan (seems this has been a problem as long as I can remember)

Next one out of the door:

    – Obertan
    – Willo
    – Gos (maybe a loan deal)
    – Tav (loan deal)
    – Sammy (loan deal)
    – Fergy (loan deal)
    – Vuckic (loan deal)
    – Raylor (maybe this is a bit contraversial since he’s injured, but I don’t think he’s good enough) *Model prof. though!

Have Abeid and Afil been released?

Yes he played 30 odd games last season, more through need than merit.

Average player at best, put in some good shifts, I wont take that away from him, but to be fair, never EPL standard.

Good luck perchy, he did a good job for us, but as has been said already, at least anita [and bigi] should get the game time they need to improve now, and how much do we think he would have been on? 15-20k ?? that will go towards any potential signings and there wages along with the circa £1m transfer fee as im sure thats the way MA likes it.

    @ 15

I agree, very much the problem.

You look at the teams in the top half of the table, they can chop and change players without it having a detrimental impact on the team.

We could not do that, and in my opinion, that is the difference between the teams at the top and the teams at the bottom.

Man U for example could send out their second choice XI and get a win, if we could put together a second choice XI, we definately wouldn’t get a result – only have to look at some of the results in the cups to realise that.

Personally I think Perch will do a good job for Wigan and at the price people are saying, good bit of business for Wigan. Hopefully this means more of Anita as he has seemed very capable when actually played!

A few players I hope we take a punt on are:
Nacer Chadli, Marko Arnoutovic, Zarate, Georginio Wijnaldum

All skillful fairly pacey players and wouldn’t cost more than £8mill at the most. Playing alongside HBA and Cisse in a front three.

I don’t think he ever gave a man of the match performance. Whereas Anita gave three in a row and was then dropped, so there’s no wonder he wasn’t consistant.

Perch for me was good back up, but also preventing the development of Bigi who was already equally as good as Perch already. So, if selling Perch means one of our best youngsters gets more games then I’m happy with that.

He won’t be replaced because I don’t think he needs to be.

tads…you want me to cry a river? No player should be here just so we can fulfill the homegrown rule.

…If they are not good enough then they should leave and make room for some one better (British if that’s what it takes)

The youngsters should not be a problem sending out on loan. If you are concerned about replacing Perch, Raylor, Willo and Obertan in order to fulfill the homegrown rule I am sure that can be taken care of without breaking the bank?
