Newcastle Go In First For England Striker

12:26 am, Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 154 Comments

Newcastle United look to have missed out on our number one striker transfer target, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (what again?), so the news late last night was that Newcastle are going in for 29 year-old Darren Bent, and we don’t think this news will delight too many Newcastle fans.

Darren Bent – Newcastle to make bid

Newcastle need a top striker brought into the club this summer to replace the departed Demba Ba, and that’s not Darren Bent, whose best days are behind him.

It was obvious as soon as Paul Lambert took over the Aston Villa job last summer that Darren wasn’t exactly his favorite player, but just to make it absolutely clear this summer, Lambert has informed Bent that he will not take any part in the squad’s pre-season preparations.

So that means Darren will not be part of the summer training camp in Germany, and he will not even train at all with the first team.

It must be that B.O.

The news late last night was that Newcastle are expected to now make a move for the 13 times capped England International.

But of course just as the fee was a problem in Newcastle’s pursuit of St. Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, so it will be with Bent, and Mike Ashley will not be willing to pay too much for a 29 year-old past his best.

And it could be that Newcastle’s bid will be the first for a player who has hardly been courted heavily by any club up to this point, probably due to the £8M fee Aston Villa are asking.

Since they paid in excess of £18M for Bent a short two and a half years ago, when he forced a move away from Sunderland, Villa will be trying to recuperate as much money as possible for the striker.

And it seems that Alan Pardew wants Bent brought to Newcastle, and we think Newcastle will be willing to bring him in if they can get the fee down to less than £5M,  and his wages down from the reported £70K/week he’s been getting at Villa.

Darren Bent will be looked on as very much second best as far as Newcastle fans are concerned, and hopefully Newcastle will be going after another younger striker this summer, although it’s looking like Borussia Dortmund will soon land our first choice – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

If only Mike Ashley had more ambition for Newcastle United ……

Before I go off lads i said this before. It was all speculation about us going for PEA, its all the press rumours so us fans can think that we were actually after him just like previous targets; luuk de jong, Gamerio, Gervinho. Did you know Mike Ashley pays journalists to make speculation up in North East newspapers? Mark Douglas, Steve Wraith, people over in TalkSport.€13 million basically £11 million… What a bargain if thats fully done.

  • 2 Jamiemac // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:30 AM

To be fair we don’t know what and how much the bonuses are. If the initial fee is only €13m as reported then i imagine there are a fair amount of bonuses and future fees

  • 3 microbar // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:34 AM

I thought Bent would have had more ambition than to come to this club,At least theres not much chance that JK gets his name wrong.Maybe thats his plan.

  • 4 p // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:34 AM

This is also pure speculation, no quotes, no credible source

Chronny often creates this type of rumour and then next day dismisses rumour “wide of the mark”

Unless both bent and villa drop their knickers, he will not join. Not even jfk can convince mash to pay 8m + 80k a week for someone who has already been at his peak

Perhaps he will come but i think our striker will come out of nowhere

  • 5 spitfire_ // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:37 AM

Kinnear logic – why to buy PEA when we can get Bent?

  • 6 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:38 AM

I agree, but I count playing in CL and Euros as experience on highest level and playing enough seasons in L1 as well.

Sissoko, Debuchy, Mbiwa, Gouffran have more games as professional players than Simpson, Tiote, S.Taylor. Not in PL sure, but still. Santon have 55 games in PL. Cabaye 60. Gosling 38. Shola 286 games.

Cabaye had 191 games in L1 when he came over. Debuchy 233 games.

It’s quality that matters. We need better quality players on our bench.

  • 7 AMEOBI // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:41 AM

    That picture is benteke?

  • 8 Rooster // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:44 AM

Ukn hell man, Bent is just a mercenary type who gets chance after chance, no use to the team whatsoever unless he has the ball, bloody lazy bugger that he is, and if it is not going well for him then, he goes in to hiding, and an ex mackem as well. im writing this with a face that looks like ive just chewed an asprin!!!

  • 9 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:45 AM

    Kinnear’s extended logic
Why get Darren bent when we can get Markus bent

Christ next season is going to be depressing at this rate

  • 10 JackButler // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:46 AM

Here comes that kick in the balls we’ve all been waiting for, being let down by Ashley and co is now the norm but I can’t believe that I am still surprised with how he runs this club

  • 11 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:46 AM

All those players went to clubs with higher reputation than us hardly suprising if they choose rather then us. The probably got better wages as well.

Remy and Gamerio are the only two that went for worse teams that pay higher wayes. At least PSG were at that time.

The rest went to CL clubs. So stop blaming Ashley for that.

  • 12 lesh // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:49 AM

Just what’s going on is anybody’s guess.

The cat that lives three doors down said we’d be bidding for Bent.

Maybe it pops into the Orange Tree fur the laser hour too.

  • 13 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:49 AM

He will call him Mr.Bench for sure.

  • 14 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:50 AM

Completley agree washed up has been who’s best form is 3 years behind him and couldn’t get into a desperate villa side
Still remember him telling mcliesh the previous season he wouldn’t play in the last 6 games of the season, despite being in a relegation battle and there captain, in case he got injured and wouldn’t be available for international duty, the tw@ wasn’t even called up
Scummy little merc steer well clear

  • 15 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:52 AM

Hi peps ive good some good news and some not so good from what im hearing we r still after Siem De Jong but we have pulled out of the race for PEA now joe wants 2 players for the price of 1 Bent, Bony/Ideye Brown also we have made contact about a CB but I have no names yet but he plays in italy.

  • 16 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:52 AM

Liverpool agree £6M deal with Swansea City for Jonjo Shelvey.

At least we dodge that bullet.

  • 17 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:54 AM

Ive also heard we want Jack Rodwell if Cabs does leave and when perch leaves we want Leroy Fer.

  • 18 JackButler // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:55 AM

Bony will be a Swansea player before long according to reports

  • 19 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:56 AM

The PEA race is over. Confirmed done deal today. CB from Italy. That’s new.

  • 20 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:58 AM

    Bloody hell!!

It’s begun, Darren Bent as only major signing this summer….

  • 21 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:58 AM

Is he italian? or just plays there? Which team?

  • 22 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 12:58 AM

Sazzer yeah m8 PEA is over not yet signed but he wants to go to Dortmund and you can’t blame him can you they play great football and have a great manager im still waiting to hear more about the CB but ive been told he is a international player not sure what nationality he is?

  • 23 gfp13 // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:00 AM

England striker!? When was his last cap?

I wouldn’t mind having either of them. Rodwell isn’t as good as cabaye but being English I’d have him, as he had massive potential at Everton. Leroy fer is a definite upgrade on perch for a centre mid but isn’t as versatile. I would only sell cabaye if we were to invest the money on other areas of squad too. Cm we are relatively okay, sissoko, tiote, cabaye, Anita, bigi and I might be missing a few so with the money for cabaye, getting those 2 and a player or 2 for another position. But with rodwell… What are his wages? Would like both the players you have mentioned tho

  • 24 p // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:02 AM

    Is it that Spazzatura lad?

  • 25 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:04 AM

gfp13 as far as aware he is on big money but not getting game time ive heard it will be a loan deal with option to buy to give us a chance to find a replacement that wont cost as much Bony is touch and go as he looks to be heading to swansea but I expect a late move from us or we may just go for Brown carr has watched Ideye for many years when he was in france and now in russia also we r after a winger but again ive no names yet just he is in holland?

  • 26 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:04 AM

Another guy talked about Rodwell coming if Cabaye leaves. So that seem to be the plan then.

I personally would go for Badelj if that happens.

Fer is friend of Anita but plays more like Sissoko.

  • 27 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:07 AM

Sazzer I agree about Badelj but from what im hearing joe is stuck on getting english type players strong and big ie Sissoko, Fer, Rodwell, Tiote, Anita lol.

  • 28 Newcastle Brown Alien // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:08 AM

right, I’ll take bent, if we also go for another striker/winger. Then it will be a good summer

  • 29 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:09 AM

It the italian on big money or do you mean Rodwell?

  • 30 pizzicatochan // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:12 AM

    Darren Bent-eke

  • 31 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:12 AM

Sazzer Rodwell m8 im not even sure who the CB is yet let alone his wage I should here more 2moz I let everyone know when I do Siem De jong will be the signing of our summer I really hope we pull it off and his Bro if he wants to join him.

  • 32 manxpie // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:13 AM

can anyone actually show me any proof that we had bid for PEA in this window or the last?
i was just wondering why everyone seems to think we were so close to signing him and now this disappointment which will get worse over the next few hours(days) which seems only to be from media sources that constantly spurn out shit every minute!!?
ok he spoke about us but remember his twitter account has been hounded by nufc fans and we seem to be used as a bargaining tool by many agents!!
so why is it your all disappointed by this then in uproar because we’re “supposed” to be in for bent??
do you not learn your lessons lol?

  • 33 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:15 AM

manxpie No evidence but hope we actually tried to spend that sort of money but I think it would be better if we got Bent and either Bony or Ideye Brown for the price of PEA.

  • 34 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:16 AM

Badelj is 6 ft 1 in or 186 cm. Tiote is 1.80 m 5 ft 11. Makes more interceptions and tackles than him and he has better delivery then Cabaye.

  • 35 pizzicatochan // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:21 AM

Maybe in the next morning we will see some unexpected news like how we signed Marveaux at first.

  • 36 manxpie // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:22 AM

and as for perch as great as he’s been the last couple of years he’s what 27? in his last year of contract n prooved himself in the prem we’ve got enough CM to have a b team and i think he deserves 1st team footy and fairplay to him but obviously its the management and owner thats gettin rid just 2 make some money!!
come on? i would say he’s decided he doesn’t want to be a “loyal hardworking utility player” and actually be a 1st team player week in week out!
and i wish him luck and fair play

  • 37 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:23 AM

Sazzer I agree m8 but I dont see anyone spending big on either Cabs or Tiote to be honest would u have Rodwell and Gosling in our Mid together?

  • 38 pizzicatochan // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:28 AM

    HAZZY1, I like this idea.

  • 39 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:29 AM

    pizzicatochan Which idea?

  • 40 manxpie // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:30 AM

hazzy exactly i hope aswell but thats all it is but alot of drama queens on here take twitter and other media as gospel and then slag of the club even though theres no substance to any of the stories!!
it certainly doesn’t help when local journalists do the same!
rotunda recently has spouted some unbelievable crap about the club and sadly i actually think he believes it :)

  • 41 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:30 AM

I think we were a alternative for PEA but obviously not his first choice all along. Nobody have clear evidence we were close unless you are in the know. I think it was confirmed we bid for him in January as did Fiorentina. Leverkusen had bid rejected this summer. Everton was never in for him.

  • 42 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:36 AM

Best would be to have Rodwell as Goslings replacement rather than Cabs.

  • 43 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:38 AM

Sazzer again I agree but I just get the feeling Gosling will come good don’t ask y so I say give him another year on loan in championship or play him more.

  • 44 Mister Tuff // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:39 AM

manxpie – I’ve just been checking all the press releases from ASSE in January. I always thought we had bid for him then -but it appears perhaps we did not. Around about 26th Janaury there was a load of speculation in the English press about our link and a possible bid. ASSE issued a club statement to the effect that any bid would be refused – but without actually saying there was a bid from us -so perhaps we did not bid after all.

  • 45 manxpie // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:40 AM

sazzer yeah but i still don’t get the over the top disappointment that you see on here i mean you see it with any red top link lol
now until sportsdirect news covers it i won’t believe fully anyone that is linked :)

  • 46 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:49 AM

There are plenty of rich owners prepare to spend silly money on players in Turkey, Ukraine, Russia and France nowadays.

I don’t clubs in PL will go after them as was rumoured before.

  • 47 manxpie // Jul 3, 2013 at 1:51 AM

tuff well thats a shock lol hang on while i recover from my heart attack……………………………………………………………could it be more media speculation that they love to shovel at us?
especially if they took notice of forums like this lol
storms in teacups come to mind!
how many drawn out transfers have been completed under ashley i can only think of debuchy and that was drawn out because of money then need!
he would be here in this window with a couple of mill knocked off but every other long media based interest in players we havent got because they become too expensive
thats why i believe we are used by clubs n agents n i think most fans should expect the unexpected as we know from recent events!?

  • 48 pizzicatochan // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:00 AM

HAZZY1, Rodwell and Gosling are Everton’s high-profile youth products.

  • 49 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:04 AM

Yeah, I was more disapointed we didn’t sign Michu or Mirallas last year. Since I think they might have chosen us over Swansea and Everton if we have been in for them.

    Mister Tuff
Then maybe I should take some of the blame for starting this PEA circus or contributing to it since I was few people talking about PEA when it was all De Jong and Remy. I never claimed we were in for him though just I though he ticked all the boxes for us back then.

  • 50 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:08 AM

pizzicatochan Was there young products now 1 is sitting on our bench and the other on city’s both should be playing full games by now they r both in there 20′s now.

  • 51 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:10 AM

Sazzer don’t blame urself for telling us ur thoughts if people take your comments to heart that’s not ur fault I also thought PEA was a good option but id would have been over the moon if we had got both De Jong’s instead.

  • 52 HAZZY1 // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:14 AM

Im off to bed now nite all hopefully we sign a player when I wake up Ideye Brown or De Jong would be nice.

  • 53 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:14 AM

I don’t see anything in Gosling that gets me excited. I have more belief in Vuckic. Even though I think neither will be dominating players in PL. If Gosling study Lampard enough he might find his niche after a year in Championship.

Will Hughes gets me more excited and Bigi.

  • 54 Geordie-Exile // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:16 AM

I would have liked us to have shown some real ambition and tried to get Aubameyang on board. We are crying out for more pace throughout the side and this guy has that in abundance If our ambition is Bent and this Nigerian who has an extreme lack of pace the best we can do then I am not suprised that supporters are feeling let down again.

I would hope that Ashley had learned his lesson from last year and realised that you need to spend just to stay in the chasing pack. I certainly do not want a repeat of last years fiasco when we went to the wire and just missed the drop.

Being a NUFC supporter for the best part of sixty years is like being the patron saint of lost causes.

  • 55 manxpie // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:19 AM

sazzer i’m not havin a go at you or anyone that says stuff but the people who take this information as gospel and hits them so much that they need to throw a hissy fit if its not true it’s embarrasing really!

  • 56 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:21 AM

Why not all three ;-P I meant it more like I might have been part of cause of the circus. Just for this particular player.

  • 57 manxpie // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:21 AM

and i’ve been banging on about hughes for ages lol we should buy him now n loan him back he’ll be a star i reckon

aye sazzer hes 18 and when i’ve seen him (not that much i must confess) but he seems to be both footed and forward thinking and full of energy and will only increase in value the longer he’s left

  • 63 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:34 AM

Musa from Nigerian team had some pace to him in Confederations cup. I don’t think we can afford him though.

You wouldn’t say it was lack of ambition from Ashley that we didn’t sign Jesus Navas would you? So why is this Aubameyang situation different for you?

  • 64 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:35 AM

Cardiff about to sign Victor Wanyama for £11m. #nufc and #safc missing a trick. He’s not worth that, but is top…

  • 65 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:46 AM

Jurgen Klopp said when they signed Marco Reus for 17 m £ that it was cheap. And I agree with that, if you compare it to Pastore and some other players costing the double amount.

I would loan Derby Gosling and Ferguson to get Hughes. Since I think he got what it takes to successful in a top half team rather bottom half given time. Fabregas played in that age. I believe Hughes can as well.

  • 66 Sazzer // Jul 3, 2013 at 2:48 AM

TFS Newcastle United ?@TFS_Newcastle is the source on that Cardiff link.

  • 67 Mister Tuff // Jul 3, 2013 at 3:18 AM

sazzer -worst thing for me ref Aubameyang -was that we were really not interested in him -to any relevant extent -some people have dubbed him the European Neymar – e is a really good player. I wasted loads of my time researching him,and posting about his crystal boots, when he got his cars pinched, his old man touting him around – I confess there was a bit of excitement. I don’t think I could replicate that same excitement/expectation for the Bents/Le Fondres/Puncheons of this world or other similar lower level players.

  • 68 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Jul 3, 2013 at 4:56 AM

@sazzer – was that a copy and paste or did you actually just hashtag something on this blog?!?

I just can’t stop this nagging feeling that this summer will be just like last- only one proper first team signing after a lot of talk.

Then we’ll get the inevitable: “We just couldn’t get them over the line because of the staff changes- but we did our business in January really anyway…..”

I’m just waiting for the first Pardew rubbish like before like:
“We should have two top, top signings by next week”

To which we, once again, sign no one by that time. How many times has Pardew done this?! It’s ridiculous.

  • 69 cyprus // Jul 3, 2013 at 5:00 AM

  • 74 ILuvBnW // Jul 3, 2013 at 5:20 AM

Personally I wouldn’t enjoy we going for Bent…being a striker already past his peak…but I was thinking of something…he is already 29, and perhaps this is his last chance to try and break into the World Cup squad…with the number of young striker talents coming through in Sturridge, Zaha, Welbeck, Ox and so on…he might as well give up the hope of wearing the England jersey in the WC again, unless he can impress and get in the squad with a good run of goalscoring form throughout this season.

So, that might bring out some extra initiative from within him, and might trigger a solid season from DaBent…just might!

  • 75 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Jul 3, 2013 at 5:21 AM

@p – yeah, I can see that happening. If we don’t have a successful transfer window then Kinnear will be in trouble.

That is his sole job and responsibility so if we don’t sign several very good players then it is proof that his appointment as DoF was not a good idea and does not help the club with transfers.

Yet I’m sure he’ll still be the best, and will have been DoF for atleast 4 years by september- maybe he’ll name the players we ‘nearly’ got. It’ll at least be funny, even if people will be laughing at all of us….

  • 76 p // Jul 3, 2013 at 5:27 AM

  • 78 89Norcal // Jul 3, 2013 at 5:47 AM

might sound crazy but I would prefer starting Gouffran or Vuckic over buying a 29 year old Darren Bent

  • 79 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Jul 3, 2013 at 6:11 AM

@89Norcal – Not crazy at all. I’ll be so annoyed if we buy him.
    -useless outside the box
    -big wages
    -too old
    -too expensive
    -barely played for a year
-not as good a finisher as some say
    -terrible at one on ones
    - Ex sunderland
    - Would be his last chance for a big payday
    - Same type of player as Cisse
    - Can’t play anywhere else
    - as many embarrassing misses as goals
    - Sulks

Then again, maybe he’d be good….

  • 80 bills-son // Jul 3, 2013 at 6:20 AM

There is a reason why we can’t get most players over the line…

We were never in for them.

The stick Ashley gets over hacky press rumours is laughable. As others have pointed out if a Champs Lge team is in for a player we – and any team not in the Champs Lge – have practically zero chance of signing them.

It’s not lack of ambition by Ashley its ambition from the player. Simple as.

  • 81 jimmysmith // Jul 3, 2013 at 6:26 AM

Darren Bent, good grief! Shefki Kuqi written large!!!!!

  • 82 bills-son // Jul 3, 2013 at 6:37 AM

I haven’t got a clue why so many are claiming Darren Bent is rubbish and past it. He hardly played last season – not because of form but because him and Lambert’s relationahip has obviously broken down completely.

Villa fans have said his goals saved them from relegation the season before last and at 29 he is far from a past it age.

I’m not saying he is a world beater but he is a proven Prem scorer and at the right price and wages he could be a very decent buy.

  • 83 Santon03 // Jul 3, 2013 at 6:39 AM

Bent will be the 1st, probably hopefully not the last striker we will sign.
If he is the only striker we sign, hopefully Campbell will have more chances.

  • 84 Santon03 // Jul 3, 2013 at 6:50 AM

If Ashley agreed to what these people wants and not signing Bent, then Bent go to Cardiff and score 30 goals next season. These same people will blame Ashley for not signing Bent and will abuse Ashley for it.
Can’t blame Ashley for not communicating.

  • 85 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 3, 2013 at 6:55 AM

    Morning lads!

It seems we haven’t even bid for PEA; apparantly JFK keeps forgetting what he was suppose to be doing ;-)

It seems we are repeating last season where Carr and Pardew drew up a shotlist of players that was as the word says short. It was compailed of players we either couldn’t afford of MA thought was overprized.

We ended up only buying Anita. First rule of creating a shortlist:

    1. Put players on it you can afford.

    2. Have a plan b and plan c.

    3. Make you move if another club comes in for your target.

These are three simple rules you should be able to follow in order to be succesful in the transfer marked.

    Another rule could be:

    4. Don’t hire a DoF in transferseason who has Alzheimer; he will forget names and who to buy!

  • 86 Santon03 // Jul 3, 2013 at 6:58 AM

We don’t know that for sure. I don’t think these bidding and contract negotiation process are done in front of public or in front of press.
Last time we made it public, we got hijacked on the last minute.

  • 87 Santon03 // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:03 AM

I’m seeing the difference between January and this window. In January, so many news about who we were going to sign, this window 0 news. Only players going out who made the news.

  • 88 Ben3arfa // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:04 AM

    Who remembers this legend??

  • 89 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:06 AM

Santon…I don’t think we know anything, but I am sure if we had bid for PEA it would have come out since Dortmund is signing him.

For me at least it was quite obvious that we didn’t have a big enough shortlist last season and we compiled of players we either couldn’t afford or MA deemed overprized!

I am fearing history is repeating it self; you might see it differently (we all see things differently in here anyway ;-) )

  • 91 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:08 AM

If it’s true, and this is Ba’s replacement and it turns out to be our only new striker, I’ll be completely underwelmed by this.

    Reasons being:

We must have plenty money to spend right now. It would be a clear indication of a lack of ambition to me. Especially after last summers mistakes.

We have a chance right now to go after a quality forward, not an overpaid has been who has struggled for form in a team that were very nearly relegated along with us. I wouldn’t see that as an intent for progression.

The only way I would be potentially ok with this is if he was Shola’s replacement to warm the bench. And our quality striker was brought in also.

If we only spend 3-4 million on a striker this window for penny pinching reasons, I’d be absolutely gutted. And if that is on Bent, i’ll call it a day spending money on this football club.

That’s how strongly I honestly feel about this.

  • 93 magpie6699 // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:15 AM

You know, you can totally talk yourself into doom and gloom when b….r all has happened. We have a squad even now that should do OK in the PL and is much better than some we have had in the past and just because some drunk / lazy journos make up stories about who we were after and didn’t get, people on here slash their wrists and berate the club for not buying a player who chose a CL club instead of us.
As for the people who say talk themselves into saying things like “This is the worst situation I’ve ever known: – perlease! You haven’t been following the Toon for long enough! We are in the top division and have some decent players. Try playing in the old division 2 and relying on signings from Blyth Spartans! Or worrying about relegation to Division 3!
And no, I’m not happy about the appointment of JFK or everything MA does, but for heaven’s sake keep a bit of perspective when it’s only day 3 of the transfer window and nowt has actually happened.

  • 100 Ibizatoon // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:22 AM

    Jesper…It was indeed :)

So then, I take it from the current tone on the blog that PEA to Dortmund is official then?

I am struggling to believe that we will just be bringing in Bent this window. From the sounds of it, we’re looking to offload a few of our fringe players this window and the numbers will surely need to be made up…that’s without increasing the depth of the squad?!?

I know this is Newcastle and nothing should shock us anymore, but I really will be left flabbergasted if we start this season with a smaller squad than we did last season after “lessons were learnt”. Granted, we got 5 players in January and lost 1, but this is a new season and there is money now available (supposedly we were looking to buy players last season too so surely the January spree wasn’t all funded from the summer fund?) and we need to push on.

I’m going, I need coffee before I jump into Newcastle debate. Ughhh.

Good morning gents. In the office all day today but luckily have the internet and this blog.

Although judging by the fact that it’s apparently MY fault we haven’t signed Aubameyang…I’m not sure that’s such a good thing! :-)

    Hope you are all well!

  • 102 Santon03 // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:23 AM

what I’m trying to say is they are more cautious now since Remy incident, I think. Hopefully I’m right.
Btw last time we have Llambias as DOF, things have changed. What I’m affraid of is on Friday, when we reveal our first signing will be Kinnear as DOF, it was a joke that Bayern’s DOF did (I forgot his name).

  • 103 bills-son // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:23 AM

Alex Ferguson signed many so called past it players in their 30′s and they gave great service. Larsson, Blanc, Berg, Van der Sar to name but four.

Sometimes if you are good enough you are young enough – never mind if you are good enough you are old enough.

  • 104 Ibizatoon // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:26 AM

PPB…I feel that Ashley will be thinking that the reason it was difficult last summer was that there was too much info about who we were interested in which made negotiations difficult (more expensive). I would expect that measures have been taken to keep things under wraps this summer. Then again, I’m still hoping that Kinnear is just one giant smoke screen whilst we conduct our business, then he leaves…would be a genius move….as long as any potential incoming player knew of the plan

  • 105 valle // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:26 AM

Darren Bent cannot create his own goals, he is even more of an poacher than Cisse is… What exactly will he bring to the team besides being english? Im 100% sure this is pardews doing more than anyone else, he is blaiming last season on the fact that he lacked premier league experience in the team rather than accepting that he used the wrong tactics and played people out of position. Looking at the players we are going for, the wesst ham players, Bent and Pilkington. I would say we are going to be set back a couple of years.

  • 106 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:26 AM

As with bidding for PEA, we have no idea whether there is even a shred of truth to any of this.

However, if this is to be our new striker, then underwhelmed is not even close to how depressing this is.

He only managed 10 goals the season before last, when he was playing regularly. Not exactly a top striking record. The lad can’t hold the ball up and bring others into play, he is a poacher in the same vein as Cisse. With Bent we have 2 very similar strikers, who would be atrocious playing as a pairing, and would not enable us to mix up the way we play if needed as impact from the bench.

If this is our strike target, despite thinking we desperately need strikers, I’d rather just stick with Cisse Goofy Shola and Campbell.

  • 109 jimmysmith // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:30 AM

He did sign Edward Sherringham, who was fantastic for 20 years at the highest level. Not sure even Darren would put himself in that company, but yeah Bent on form is the real deal, but at 29, with two years underperformance behind him and Newcastle fans looking to regather lost momentum, i`d be forgiving an edge of cynicism and skepticism.

  • 110 TorqToon // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:31 AM

    Ibiza – Torq Out? :-)

  • 111 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:34 AM

Berg was 27 when he joined Man U. Blanc fair enough, Larsson was a 6month loan deal, and Van Der Sar was a keeper, so age is slightly less restricting there.

However, the one thing all these players have which Darren Bent doesn’t a top class career behind them when joining.

    Have fun enjoy your day.

  • 117 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 3, 2013 at 7:45 AM

    I am a geordie,
I don’t think he was injured much last year, just not thought of as good enough for Villa. The previous year he only managed 10 goals, that’s less than Cisse this year – and people have been berating Cisse for how little he brings to the side, Bent offers even less.

I don’t mind getting players with Prem experience, but let’s not have it at the expense of talent and ability.

Mmmmm……. RVP is also 29, is he past it????? Strikers best age for for is 28 / 29 so really Bent would be a good signing / a fresh start for him! For anyone on this blog who is from the UK Bent is best known for hitting a new club and banging goals in straight away. Is he mercenary?? Both Tottenham and Sunderland sold him for Big Money when he was hitting form so you cannot blame him for that.

For the record I also think we should go in for Defoe as I think him and Bent could prove a very good partnership. With regards to PEA – could he be another Gervinho, all hyped up and then goes to Arsenal and fails!?!?!?!

@scottie but rvp is a much better well rounded player. Bent I would take, on reduced wages and half the touted fee. He’s hardly set the world alight recently. My problem is that he’s too similar to cisse. A scorer but not a creator. Them two up front would need a he’ll of a lot of good support, crosses and pitch perfect through balls

I personally would go after Ricky Lambert than Bent…especially after the last season he had, and with Cabs probably leaving, he will be a really decent option from set pieces (he is outstanding in penalty and even good with free kicks). Moreover, he can turned into a solid backup as Shola is leaving…with more of a target man option

  • 154 davis_toons // Jul 4, 2013 at 3:35 AM

I cannot be sure that Bent is as good as Shola. Dont be too eager to off load him. He is tall and can hold ball can assist imagine the numbers of assist he have given to BA…those head -ons.

What can Bent do? I’m not too sure. Can be Owen No.2.

What can Sholo do? We know that at time he does chip-in and it counts, he is a different kind of approach which Pardew loves to use at the mid-stage of the game.
