Newcastle United look to have missed out on our number one striker transfer target, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (what again?), so the news late last night was that Newcastle are going in for 29 year-old Darren Bent, and we don’t think this news will delight too many Newcastle fans.
Darren Bent – Newcastle to make bid
Newcastle need a top striker brought into the club this summer to replace the departed Demba Ba, and that’s not Darren Bent, whose best days are behind him.
It was obvious as soon as Paul Lambert took over the Aston Villa job last summer that Darren wasn’t exactly his favorite player, but just to make it absolutely clear this summer, Lambert has informed Bent that he will not take any part in the squad’s pre-season preparations.
So that means Darren will not be part of the summer training camp in Germany, and he will not even train at all with the first team.
It must be that B.O.
The news late last night was that Newcastle are expected to now make a move for the 13 times capped England International.
But of course just as the fee was a problem in Newcastle’s pursuit of St. Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, so it will be with Bent, and Mike Ashley will not be willing to pay too much for a 29 year-old past his best.
And it could be that Newcastle’s bid will be the first for a player who has hardly been courted heavily by any club up to this point, probably due to the £8M fee Aston Villa are asking.
Since they paid in excess of £18M for Bent a short two and a half years ago, when he forced a move away from Sunderland, Villa will be trying to recuperate as much money as possible for the striker.
And it seems that Alan Pardew wants Bent brought to Newcastle, and we think Newcastle will be willing to bring him in if they can get the fee down to less than £5M, and his wages down from the reported £70K/week he’s been getting at Villa.
Darren Bent will be looked on as very much second best as far as Newcastle fans are concerned, and hopefully Newcastle will be going after another younger striker this summer, although it’s looking like Borussia Dortmund will soon land our first choice – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
If only Mike Ashley had more ambition for Newcastle United ……
