Newcastle have been linked with Lyon striker Bafétimbi Gomis before, in fact we put in a £10M bid for him back in the summer of 2008 when he was still at St. Etienne, and there is news coming out of France today, that he has been made available for transfer by his current club Lyon.
Bafétimbi Gomis – made available by Lyon
The report is in le10sport and here it is and you can have it translated automatically to English by Google Chrome, and probably by other web browsers too.
The Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas wants to sell the 27 year-old Gomis as a priority this summer, although the player himself was happy enough to remain at Lyon to increase his chances of getting into the French World Cup squad for next summer’s tournament in Brazil.
There was a meeting between the Gomis representatives and the Lyon President on Monday, at which time Gomis was told to find a new club.
However, it is then all conjecture about Newcastle, but the report suggests Newcastle may be interested – and there are at least a couple of reasons for that.
We have missed out on out top striker target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who signed for Borussia Dortmund today as expected, and Newcastle have been interested in Gomis in the past.
In fact the report in le10sport says Newcastle have already contacted Lyon, and the French club are in need of the cash, so if Newcastle think Gomis could do a good job on Tyneside, presumably we could even arrange a decent deal for the 10 times capped French International.
We’ve never been too impressed with Gomis, and we’d prefer Loic Remy from QPR for £8M, but it seems like good strikers are available in the transfer market, so we wait for Joe Kinnear and Mike Ashley to get the job done.
Gomis did play for France in South America in the June friendlies, but he didn’t look too impressive.
But Newcastle need two good strikers brought to Tyneside this summer.

Comment #3I might be in the minority but i don’t rate Gomis.
Siem De Jong, Luuk De Jong, Gamiero, Hooper, Austin, would all be better options.
Is Nelson Oliveira still good, haven’t heard anything about him in the last year or so?!?!

Comment #5I dont know why, I just dont rate Gomis highly :S I’ve only seen him play once or twice so cant really judge. looking at his records he is is definitely better buy than kone/bent (mostly due to age imo)

Comment #8De Jong, Remy would be my choice!
Not that it will happen …. EVER!
More likely to sign some average mid age player!
We have a decent squad we just need to bolster it for competition and options.
Hoping we get this signing JK talked about tomorrow! Fans begging for it after watching
Sunderland buy 4/5 now and linked and bidding for 2 or 3 more!

Comment #10Gomis reminds me too much of Kenwyne Jones, he can be unplayable but a lot of the time games can pass him by.
Checked on Nelson Oliviera and his record on loan for Deportivo is on par with Xisco’s when he was there the season before.

Comment #11Remy for £8M and Bent for £5M would give us four strikers with Cisse and Gouffran and then Camplbell is coming through. Having said that I think Kone would be a great signing to play alongside Cisse or Remy. Physical, holds the ball up well and runs all day. A very good buy for £6M.

Comment #23I think Man Utd will struggle to make the top 10 this season. Their squad is very average compared with Arsenal, Spurs, City, Chelsea. I’d rather have our squad than theirs if we signed another two quality strikers.

Comment #24Now PEA is a gonna along with Lens, I would actually like Remy as our options are becoming more limited. We need pace and finishing and he has both (and heading).
Money, Fernandez, whatever. We were hardly riding high up the league were we. We were close to QPR in the league (nice one Alan) And for someone who has no prior affiliation to our club, I don’t think choosing them should go against him too much. A lot of people would a have done a similar thing.
If we were comfortably in the top half of the table we may have seen a different outcome and he could well have been here instead.
Even then, he would have just continued to paper over the cracks of our abysmal coaching and tactical philosophy which Pardew proceeds to blag his way through to earn his salary.

Comment #28Kets, I like Gouffran. Decent and thoughtful on the ball, pace and has some strength too. Decent shot power.
Again, a decent system and interplay would see players like Gouffran step up two or three gears I think.

Comment #33Don’t rate Gomiz either, he was a potential at some point but doesn’t seem to fulfill his promise

Comment #37I don’t think Welbeck’s good enough. Infact he’s a poor player. I’d hate it if we signed him. Players like Kone and Bent are more influential than him and that’s a fact.
United have Van Persie, Hernandez and Valencia but all the rest are distinctly average. Who would you rather have? Oscar and Hazard or Cleverly and Carrick.? Their midfield is extremely weak.
Now they don’t have sir Alex, I can see them struggling unless they make 7/8 first team signings.
We we’re better than them last season in the games we played against them. We had a poor team out then.
I’m sure we’ll beat them twice this season if we sign the players we need.
