Will Newcastle Go After Loic Remy This Summer?

9:10 am, Thursday, July 4th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 62 Comments

Newcastle will miss out on St. Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and he’s in Dortmund right now undergoing a medical by all reports, and his signing could even be announced today.

loic remy qpr

Loic Remy – are Newcastle interested?

So Newcastle will miss out on another top transfer target, because we were unwilling to pay out the big money for a top player, and that’s been the case a lot since Mike Ashley bought the club.

But we’ve still managed to buy some top players, because of the scouting of Graham Carr, but now Newcastle will need to turn to their other striker targets this summer, and hopefully we can get a couple through the door.

Newcastle will try to bring in Darren Bent, but will not pay more than a nominal fee for the 29 year-old, so we could lose out there too.

And we wonder if Newcastle will go back in for Loic Remy, who is available for just £8M from QPR.

Things got a little bit more difficult in mid-May, when Remy and two of his friends were accused of rape by a 34 year-old woman, and they were arrested and released on bail, but that case is still to be heard.

There’s little doubt that as a striker Remy would have been a good buy for us in January, when he was supposed to come to Tyneside, but went for the big money at QPR instead – silly lad.

So bearing in mind his rape charge, and that he didn’t want to come to Newcastle in January, should Newcastle still go after him for £8M this summer?

We are going to release a new poll on this topic – so please let us know what you think.

Should Newcastle Try To Sign Loic Remy For £8M This Summer?

“Newcatle will try to sign Bent”

    Who told you this Ed?

  • 3 Markaccus // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:16 AM

Ed. You know we all enjoy the blog, but where have you got all of this positive info from. “We were unwilling to pay enough money” “we WILL try to bring in Bent”?? Its all paper talk isnt it? According to other reports we offered MORE than dortmund for PEA. I really think people are jumping to conclusions too soon without any solid facts.

  • 4 Rotonda heights // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:16 AM

So true. Pardew payed Perch ahead of Anita and as we both acknowledge he prefers artisans to artists.

He has history though. How in anyone’s world do Mullins and Harewood get played ahead of Mascherano and Tevez. I mean what did the latter 2 ever do!!!!

  • 5 TorqToon // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:16 AM

    Of course!

Innocent until proven guilty. Whack an escape clause in the contract in the chance he is convicted, but at £8mil, leave the past in the past and move forward.

  • 6 Beattie25 // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:18 AM

Quality player who quickly adapted to the PL.

No chance of us signing him though because we’ll be arguing about the amount when a team in Russia or Turkey offer the asking price and we refuse to meet it,

That’s what I think will happen.

  • 7 John Tudor // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:18 AM

    wheres the poll everyone wants

  • 8 jeff // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:18 AM

playing football manager… pardew signs chris baird for 4 million.

  • 9 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:19 AM

Personally, I would have kept Perch. We saw a similar clear out last summer, and were told they would be replaced by talented youngsters pushing for first team spots. I don’t remember Lovenkrands, Best, Forster, Smith etc. being replaced like that.

We have now lost Harper, Simmo, Perch, I’d say it is likely that at least 1 of Shola, Willo, Obertan and a couple of youngsters go out of the door as well.

Now, while not anywhere near top 6 standard, all of them need to be replaced. Do we honestly think that will happen? We would be talking bout bringing in 10+ players.

I’m all for upgrading, but in such quantities in one transfer window, howay people, let’s be realistic!

  • 10 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:21 AM

Ashley just stopped going to the ground last time we sang songs against him and his cronies. Again, no real impact on him. He is thick skinned and stubborn.

  • 11 lesh // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:21 AM

    Pardew doesn’t do signings anymore.
    Have you forgotten? Pay attention!

  • 12 John Tudor // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:22 AM

longwe if they do all that and dont replace its bye bye time cos come jan when we are in it watch those prices for crap sky rocket

  • 13 John Tudor // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:22 AM

ala bent 8 mill utter crap

  • 14 neilinho // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:23 AM

Torq, what would be your opinions on Keisuke Honda and Fernando Gago. From what I understand Honda is off contract in December and Gago is up for 2 million euro.

  • 15 joeinthecheapseats // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:24 AM

There’s still a long way to go in this window and as much as people like perchino a lot sat around me at the games last season thought it was wrong when he got in the first team ahead of Anita with Liverpool at home springing to mind.
Obertan Shola and a few others need selling to allow other better players to come in this season.
As for the ground being half empty it won’t happen in a million years people up here love the game and with a better manager our team would finish a lot higher in the league.
If I was Ashley I think I would offer Chelsea their money back and get Demba back.

  • 16 Markaccus // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:24 AM

Not that i dont agree that pards prefers certain players….

But given the ‘irregularity’ in the transfer of tevez and mascherano maybe he had to be careful about playing them. Just a theory of course

  • 17 John Tudor // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:24 AM

save him more money he can pay himself back with, chopper fuel sticky buns pies beer and time etc.

  • 18 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:25 AM

Okay, I posted this earlier, but will say it again.

If we signed Remy, with an escape clause in his contract, where does that leave us if he is convicted? Down to Cisse again. So realistically, if we signed Remy we need to bring in 2 top class centre forwards. Given our struggle to get one, does this make any sense.

Would we get our 8million back? Is Ashley likely to take a gamble on a significant chunk of tranfer kitty where he could end up with zero return?

Does anyone know when his court date is? If it was in/around a transfer window then we could(maybe) sign a replacement.

  • 19 John Tudor // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:26 AM

    joe in the
we wont get a better manager

  • 20 John Tudor // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:27 AM

who would buy shola we cant give him away

  • 21 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:27 AM

Didn’t Villa confirm we’d made contact about bent??

Is it really true Gomez is available for £10-£15 mil?? Wow great player
If there was ever a marquee signing to be made 😉
Weren’t we in form him before he signed for bayern?

  • 22 TorqToon // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:27 AM

    Neilinho – Is that true?!?

From a marketing perspective alone, Honda would soon pay for himself. On top of that, he is a good footballer and would add that quality.

Gago for €2mil is cheap. And he had the experience and ability to hold his own in the prem.

  • 23 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:29 AM

Honda has supposedly agreed to join Milan.

Yeah, if we sell the ‘deadwood’ it has to be replaced. We are in a much better bargaining position if we buy the replacements and then get rid of the deadwood, but why would anyone think to do that.

  • 24 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:29 AM

Hasn’t Honda just signed for Milan?

  • 25 Markaccus // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:29 AM

I reckon Shola will end up at a championship club. He would be a decent player there. He found goals easy for us down there until he got injured. I think its his level.

  • 26 John Tudor // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:30 AM

why would we buy those the fans would,i would, the club no chance

  • 27 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:30 AM

Hasn’t Honda just signed for Milan?
    Thought I’d heard that somewhere

  • 28 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:30 AM

A couple of clubs in the UAE are supposedly interested. A massive payday for him to end his career…

  • 29 TorqToon // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:31 AM

Lilo – either that, or sign Remy and somebody like siem so IF we lose Remy, then we still have siem to play in part of a front 3 with cisse.

2 strikers would be nice to bring in, but failing that, we need to add creativity to this club, and siem de jong would bring that.

  • 30 John Tudor // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:32 AM

    failed medicals
player brought in first player left unsold =more cash outlay he wont do it

  • 31 neilinho // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:32 AM

As far as i know Honda’s CSKA contract is up either now, or in December and Gago (who has been on loan from Valencia to Velez) is up for sale this summer for 2 million euro.

I’d jump at the two of them. We need champions, not slight upgrades on what we’ve got already!!

  • 32 Rotonda heights // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:32 AM

When curbishly took over from the sacked Pardew west ham were facing relegation like us last season. Curbs first move was to re-instate tevez who proceeded to score vital goals to get them out of trouble and in the process became a hammers legend

  • 33 Markaccus // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:33 AM

I dont remember hearing owt. The papers sometimes make false reports of confirmation but dont mention a name. It does my heed in 😀

  • 34 Rotonda heights // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:34 AM

Honda and gago would be awesome but under JFK and Pardew it’ll be Brit has-beens or never wassers.

  • 35 neilinho // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:34 AM

According to wikipedia (not an accurate source of information i’m aware) still has him registered as a CSKA Moscow player. Just googled too, and the AC Milan rumours as just that – rumours.

is it the corperate supporters cow towing to ashley or the true fans

There is too much talk here and no action!

…If anyone sees JFK walking around Newcastle looking lost and forgetful please send him back to his desk 😉

  • 39 Markaccus // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:36 AM

Yes he did. But then the hammers got into trouble over tevez playing and were lucky to escape being relegated from a points deduction. Shef utd (i think) we really psd off because it meant they were relegated, basically due to tevezs goals. I just wonder that had they not played him, and survived, (unlikely), would thete have been an issue?

  • 40 Rotonda heights // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:37 AM

I know Ashley stupidly gave 8 year contracts out but surely there would be a proviso in place should Remy get convicted, ie loan with option to buy.

Well you’d think wouldn’t you but where as Ash has been fantastic in business generally, in football he just seems to fatally turn his brain off

  • 41 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:38 AM

Even with bringing Siem in, if we did lose Remy, that is 8million down the drain as far as the transfer kitty is concerned. I think it is more likely he will get off, but is it worth that risk? Not to mention it leaves us needing an injury to Cisse to leave us with no real options, unless we switch to a Barca/Spain ‘false number 9’.

Football wise, I’d have him in no worries, I just think there is a fair bit more to be considered then that on this one.

  • 42 Markaccus // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:38 AM

We could tell him he is president of Egyptand send him there instead…..PROBLEM SOLVED!

  • 43 welshgeordie9 // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:40 AM

is it true that a player we are after was in newcastle last night.

  • 44 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:41 AM

With this rape case is he able to move abroad before it is heard? Not 100% on the legality, but I’d imagine as he is on bail he will have certain requirements to fulfill.

A loan may work, but that would most likelymean we ended up paying his full wages and Ash wouldn’t like that. Again, it could potentially leave us in the position we were in after Demba left. Just one out and out striker

  • 45 Markaccus // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:41 AM

I remember when we signed joey barton, there was a money back clause (basically a cancellation of sale) even if he had played, if he had of gone to prison over chinning his man city team mate.

  • 46 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:42 AM

That was a bit of gossip started by a supposed ITK called “Secret Sausage”. I’d imagine it was mainly porkies.

  • 47 John Tudor // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:43 AM

    un confirmed

  • 48 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:43 AM

    Markaccus…that is not a bad idea 😉

…And I am sure if he look through his CV he could probably coin something up that would make it seem so lol

  • 49 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:44 AM

No to loic. Dodgy character which I wouldn’t want to see here. Dont think the Nightlife here would do him any favours either to be honest.

Stick to proper professionals who know how to behave off the field and who has there house in order.

    Best of luck Perchy!!

  • 50 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:45 AM

Surely there doesn’t need to be a get out clause (in the contract)? In any other walk of life you wouldn’t get paid off if you went to jail under a rape charge. I’m also certain that Ched Evans wasn’t paid off. It would class a Gross misconduct, and therefore able to get rid with no pay off.

  • 51 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:45 AM

Maybe he doesn’t even remember MA gave him a contract in the first place or maybe he thinks he has been here three years already 😉 lol

  • 52 John Tudor // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:46 AM

if the clubs in such a state owing monies to the man in 6 years of tenure why is the bill not reducing if it is it will take the man forever to get our monies back best go ashley

  • 53 John Tudor // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:48 AM

we knew about rape accusation how can it be gross mis more like coch up

  • 54 welshgeordie9 // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:51 AM

all of these rumours are starting to get on my nerves surely it can’t be that hard to sign a player.

  • 55 RooneyToons // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:52 AM

I think we should really distance ourselves from Remy at the moment. The last thing we need is the press having another field day over us signing a possible rapist…. If we are interested it will surely come out and the press will be all over it

Combine this with the fact he already turned us down and is clearly only interested in the money and you have your answer… No thanks.

I think people are just gasping for a signing and the suspense is killing them.
The press just build everything up making everyone wanting heads to roll if we don’t have 5 signings in the first week of the window.

Just remember we are are 4 days into a 2 month window relax just the 58 days to go.
The unexpected is just around the corner…. Who thought we’d sign 5 players in Jan? No one

  • 56 I am a geordie // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:55 AM

When will people realise if not for ashley this club would probs be bankrupt.
Sign remy and sign bent .
    Kinnear will come through.
For me his silly but amusing outburst are genius .taking all the attention off pardew .
The man is no mug believe me .

  • 57 lesh // Jul 4, 2013 at 9:57 AM

The ‘new’ player in town last night would have been the new 17 yr old we’ve brought in from France. There was a pic of him on dated yesterday, 3rd July.

So, secret sausage wasn’t telling porkies and will doubtless re-appear and have a giggle!

Don’t bite and believe when you see new signings in the shirt.

Oh, and don’t hold your breath, they may some time coming!

  • 58 fatman // Jul 4, 2013 at 10:19 AM

    I am a geordie

    And how would that be?

  • 59 Dondatta13 // Jul 4, 2013 at 10:48 AM

Alot of people saying “Put a clause into his contract, that if he’s convicted of rape…blah blah blah”…

Do you think for one second his head will be in the right frame of mind to play football once his case goes to court?

He will be splashed all over the media, left right and centre, for a very serious accusation.

    My second point is…

Have we really become so morally bankrupt, that we would clammer for a player who has been accused of such a thing?

I know he’s innocent before being proved otherwise in a court of law but we should stay well clear imho!

  • 60 ArtyH // Jul 4, 2013 at 11:22 AM

    re post:
On Remy as far as I am aware he is innocent until proved guilty. This could be a great bargaining tool for his signing, and pay structure. As there is uncertainty about his future he may be available at a bargain bucket job which is right up Ashley’s street. After all how many fooballers have actually been proved to be rapist’s??? Very difficult offence to prove, so don’t be to quick to be judge and jury. The only down side s he went to QPR in reference to us…..but that was just for the money, so we cannot blame him there as they are all the same. This time the boot is on the other foot which gives us the leverage, time will tell, I wouldn’t be to quick to cut of my nose to spite my face. Just MHO.

  • 61 jimmysmith // Jul 4, 2013 at 11:32 AM

I am a Geordie, that’s as long a bow as anyone has dared pull on here.

  • 62 nufc 11 // Jul 4, 2013 at 12:00 PM

He looked very good at times for QPR only concern is injury record and we need to buy player who hardly ever miss games, BA come bk please, the horror tackle aside I really like the look of Mcmanaman frm Wigan give real pace to hit teams where it hurts which we lacked badly with Jonas on that side.
