One of the tasks that new Director of Football Joe Kinnear was asked to do when he was first appointed about three weeks ago – it seems much longer than that – was to unload some of the fringe players at Newcastle.
Shola Ameobi – likely to leave this summer?
And there at least two reasons for that, one is to help reduce the wage bill, and also to allow some of our top young players to get some games in the first team, like Adam Campbell and Gael Bigirimana as two good examples.
And Joe, who is in Sardinia on a holiday that was arranged before he came back to Newcastle, has already moved out James Perch to Wigan, and Dan Gosling to Crystal Palace, and there will be others who will be sold this summer.
And we have to remember that Danny Simpson and Steve Harper have already left the club this summer, when their contracts ran out at the end of June, and Danny was picked up by QPR, so that’s four Englishmen who have been moved on already this summer.
The two other Englishmen who could leave this summer are Mike Williamson and Shola Ameobi, and both players found it difficult last season to get games, especially after the five Frenchmen arrived in January, and Newcastle will want fees for both players.
And 20 year-old Mehdi Abeid has already been told to find a new club, and that’s a big disappointment to us, because just two years ago we had high hopes for the Algerian U23 player, who looked a very good young player when he first arrived on Tyneside.
And last summer’s French recruit Romain Amalfitano, just couldn’t make a break-through last season and ended up playing for the Newcastle U21 (Reserve) side, and Romain will probably seek a move back to France this summer.
And Gabby Obertan also didn’t get too many games last season when he was fit, and it’s likely Newcastle will allow the 24 year-old French U21 International to leave the club.
So there’s Shola Ameobi, Mike Williamson, Mehdi Abeid, Romain Amalfitano and Gabby Obertan, who are likely to join James Perch, Dan Gosling, Steve Harper and Danny Simpson in leaving the club this summer.
That sounds like a clear-out to us.
