Some Bad Bets Being Placed On Newcastle?

5:42 pm, Monday, July 8th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 164 Comments

We were kind of hoping the news form Sky Sports earlier today may have even been accurate, with large bets being placed on Newcastle signing Manchester City winger Scott Sinclair.

scott sinclair

Scott Sinclair - Newcastle no nothing about any contact

The odds had been cut dramatically to 1/4 on this morning, and SkyBet were wondering if the punters were in the know and knew what was going on.

But in an exclusive from Sports Direct News they say that Newcastle are “unaware” of reports linking the club with a bid for Manchester City’s 24 year-old winger Scott Sinclair.

Sports Direct News is reporting that a Newcastle spokesman “has poured cold water over any potential move.”

The Newcastle spokesperson had this to say:

“We’re unaware of those bets. I don’t know where that information has come from, so I can’t really say much more.”

Of course that statement doesn’t exactly say flat-out that Newcastle are not in for the player, and they cannot say much more – maybe until after Scott signs along the dotted line for Newcastle?

We’ll have to wait and see, and the news of a possible signing could be completely untrue – but for around £3M Scott – a goal-scoring winger – could be a decent buy for Newcastle.

So what is happening with that? still advances talks? just asking

Re cabaye. I suppose the obvious would be cash+gameiro, if he has had a change of heart about fighting for his place

    wow

Baresi, Maldini, Ginola, Costacurta will be in St. Jame’s Park for Harper’s testimonial match

Is this the same sports direct website that stated we bid for Rooney?

  • 7 Unbelievable Tekkers // Jul 8, 2013 at 5:54 PM

I gave up the hope of us signing Sinclair this morning after I saw that Colin on twitter said we had agreed a fee.

  • 8 JG83 // Jul 8, 2013 at 5:57 PM

I hope this is true about Sinclair. I think he wasted a year at man city and really needs to look at a club who will give him game time. I think playing with cabaye and Ben arfa will bring his game on as well.
I am still hoping for Tom ince to come through the door. Heard Kev Phillips on talksport last week saying he rated him higher the zaha and he played with both. Would be good if we could get one of them and remy, even bent.

  • 9 Markaccus // Jul 8, 2013 at 5:57 PM

You mean you dont believe him? I find your lack of faith disturbing #sith force-choke#

You can’t get decent amounts on with the bookies anyway on these markets I have tried in the past its a waste of time. They use it as a pr exercise. Don’t believe the hype

  • 11 Joe Blog // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:02 PM

Cabaye’s gone. I’m resigned to that. The manager who gave him his international debut, has come out and said he wants him at one of the richest clubs in the world, which is in his homeland’s capital, they are targeting conquering the CL and will at least double his wages.

What’s the least MA will accept? Probably £20m, but will play hardball I’m sure.

I’d take £12m and Menez, who’s contract expires next summer. Obertan, but with control and direction when dribbling and speed of thought to match his pace, also, buddies with HBA. Then you use the cash to bring in Siem De Jong – easy-peasy. ST and we’re sorted.

Ahhh, there’s a sample of my pipedream summer…

  • 13 swemag // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:05 PM

This would be a fantastic signing. Him on one side and Ben Arfa on the other with Cisse in the middle. It certainly works for me. And the price, even at 5 Million I think he would be an excellent buy.
Anybody knows about his attitude? The club have, and rightly so, been looking not only at footballing skills but also what goes on in the head of the players they are approaching the last few years, whats the status of Sinclair, troublemaker?

  • 14 GeordieTwo // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:06 PM

Hi Joe. Back to work yet? Did you unearth any hidden gems for us while on holiday? No rush but could you please start doing the job you’re actually being paid for? We’re all very happy that you’re getting some much needed rest after 4 years off but still… Players to watch with Graham, chats with Mike and Alan. It all still needs doing. But again no hurry Joe, it’s not like other clubs are signing anyone after all.

sinclair would be awsome signing and if other rumours are true that we have a bid agreed with psg for gamerio also i’ll b over the moon.

on cabaye he’s our best midfelder but sissoko/anita are not far behind him if i had confidence these funds from his sale would be put into other transfers i would say accept 25mil (sadly i dont so i say keep him)

See the Mackems are getting Altidore. Looks like 5under1and might have a decent team next year wit Di Canio. Fletcher & Altidore up front anyway. The rest of the team is miles away. If we don’t sign anyone this week I might explode.

Id say about 7 atm. More if more leave because i dont think most of the kids are ready for the 1st team yet.

On sinclair id definately sign him. Pards would probably still play jonas though

  • 29 GeordieTwo // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:25 PM

The statements from Pardew don’t exactly fill me with confidence that he and Joe are going to get on well. Alan thinks Alan is the boss and Joe begs to differ. That’s what I see coming. Does all of this really make sense to Ashley? I hope Carr is just ignoring it all and getting on with his job without Joe’s brilliant input. If Pardew and Carr are coming up with the names to put to Kinnear who then speaks with Ashley before handing it over to Charnley then why do we need Kinnear again? Director of f*** all indeed.

    thats because its rubbish lol
if we lose cabaye then maybe we will look at him but why would we go for another midfielder when we are allready packed full of them !

joke-kinear has allready said he’s looking to gain players in weaker areas and lose them in well stocked areas hence perchy going so we have bigi/cabaye/anita/sissoko/marv/tiote all fighting for 2 positions.

  • 34 toon kk // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:32 PM

The main objective of this transfer window is to have a clear out and keep our wage bill down. All this talk of us in for players is just speculation. Expect a smaller squad next season. I bet we bring just one player in and he’ll have to be cheap. I know alot of fans get excited about different signings we might get but im afraid your going to be disappointed.

  • 35 GeordieTwo // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:32 PM

Kone, Sinclair, Remy, the names go on and on but it’s all just rumours. No real bids, no medicals, no shirts held up at the ground. No Kinnear, a few unhappy sounding comments from Pardew. SNAFU I say.

  • 36 ToonDunno // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:33 PM

    Remy’s off to turkey…

  • 37 Bearsize // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:34 PM

Sinclair is a good player, however pardew doesnt like width for some reason, so its a non starter for me. Who would he drop really? He has his 11 knights and no one can touch them. I do want him though

  • 38 JG83 // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:34 PM

Cheers sazzer, hardly advanced stages on some would have you beleive.
I am gonna name 10 players and then if I get lucky and we sign one of them I can say that mike Ashley is my uncle.
Not having a go at the supposed itk’s on this blog as it does give me hope on a day to day basis. Just don’t pretend you know more then us when really you don’t. I don’t even think joe kinnear has an idea who we r buying yet.

  • 39 Tsunki // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:34 PM

Joe Blog – cadence? Hang on I thought erudition was prohibited? Do you want me to rattle off a pretentious poem about hypocrisy? ;)

Having said that, agreed – totalsport is the venue of the slack of jaw and feeble of wit.

  • 40 Tsunki // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:38 PM

ITK’s are as vulnerable to the law of averages as we all are to the law of gravity. When you come to terms with the fact that MA doesn’t know what’s gonna happen on a day-to-day basis, you realise that the ITK is a mythical creature.

  • 41 Sazzer // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:38 PM

De Jong is mainly a second striker/attacking midfielder but can play midfielder and striker as well.

  • 42 Tsunki // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:39 PM

    @34 toon kk

i agree and am not that bothered about it tbh as the players we had to back up the 1st team were not that great !

the best of the bunch are perchy/ameobi/obertan ! of whats going (maybe williamson but i think he will stay tbh) so that to me looks a good thing.

amalf/gos/perch/abied so far only perch’s wages have been justified and of those who i hope go (shola/ober/tav) personally i would trade them all for just sinclair.

  • 44 AndyNUFC // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:45 PM

  • 45 Laurent Robert 32 // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:47 PM

He’s on about not frettening the goal enough on the radio now… why play second halves of games scared to go into the other team’s half? Prat.

Listening to industial noise at an uncomfortable level is more bearable than listening to Pardew spin his silver.

  • 46 Sazzer // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:50 PM

    JG83
It doesn’t look impossible for us to sign De Jong if we really want him. I think smaller clubs will go for Toivonen and bigger clubs will go for Eriksen.

  • 47 Big Pappa Cissé // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:50 PM

    @ Robert

The guy is clueless. playing 4-5-1 at home and now wants to threaten the goal ? . He hasn’t got a clue

  • 48 croftus5678 // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:53 PM

    @40 sazzer

attacking mid i can believe but i have seen a fair bit since we have been linked with him and he is a great player but i have never seen him as a striker/2nd striker only as a mid running forward and creating/scoring from there i would say he’s cabaye when in atk mid role but maybe a bit more mobile but i havent looked up his playing as a striker if he’s played there.

so do we go for goals from midfield and just counter football ? i would prefere a strong striker up there to relieve our defence of pressure (pea/bony *cries*) ideye who i dont think is a true link would have been good imo but i am hopefull on gamerio if rumours are true.

  • 49 Big Pappa Cissé // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:54 PM

We could have this team with the players we are rumoured to be interested in :

    ——————————-Krul—————————

    –Debuchy——Collocini——–M’biwa——Santon–

    —————Sissoko——————Cabaye————

    ——–HBA—————De Jong———Sinclair——-

    ——————————-Cisse—————————

    Yes please :)

  • 50 Ian Toon // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:54 PM

Sorry i am not convinced over Laudrup /Swansea with or without Bony being a force and challenging the likes of the big 4/5 this coming season. Talk of us signing de Jong and a couple of offensive players which would include a wideman/ winger would have us in real contention for a top 6 place.

Whilst i buy into the need for financial stability i really think we have little option other than to make the signings mentioned to ensure that we have the fire power to score the goals to compete at the other end of the league. Stability will be achieved in keeping Cabaye our most influential player for another season. What a prospect Cabaye, de Jong and HBA in the same side- a mouth watering prospect.

I’m a football fan mate, not an accountant and that’s the shame of model day football. Young supports shouldn’t know or care about profit margins and all that money crap.

It’s not that i have Cabaye on my shirt that i would not be attracted at the prospect of a £20-25m fee for his sale but the thought that he would have been sold before we see the best of him. Injury free he could be a star in the PL this season and I would like it to be for the toon. The accountant fans and their profit and loss manipulation can wait! The best is yet to come- let the turgid doomsters be gone.

  • 52 Joe Blog // Jul 8, 2013 at 6:59 PM

That was a fairly reassuring 2nd part of the interview.

Sounds to me like Pardew has really reflected and listened to a lot of the criticism. He accepts that we were too negative and bothered about the threat of the opposition, isn’t particularly concerned about the homegrown quota. Definitely wants a ‘top striker’ and a left sided winger. And he’s definitely aware patience was wearing thin last season with his excuses.

He spoke better than I expected and didn’t put his foot in it, like so many times last year, but words are cheap.

What a stange club MA has turned us into. We’re like a club thats just been promoted after years in the championship and trying to get a foot on the ladder. We’re a big club with NO ambition. Only a fool like Cashley cant see we’re only a few good signings away from being a decent side, but he’d rather gamble and sit tight. If we get relegated it would be sad for us fans but it would serve MA rite.

What do you think the argument between Mike and Dekka was?

  • 63 Big Pappa Cissé // Jul 8, 2013 at 7:32 PM

    @ beattie

Answer to number 1 – Most likely Kinnear has put Carr’s little black book of transfer targets in his suggestion box, aka the paper shredder

Answer to number 2 – Whether Ashley’s weight loss was down to hard work or the Gastric band. My money is on the surgery :)

  • 64 Jail for Ashley // Jul 8, 2013 at 7:38 PM

    Beattie,
There was obviously a lot went on behind the scenes last year that we’ll never know about, but imo Mikey boy was over the moon with everything until he had to spend 19M pounds that he really didn’t want to have to spend and he couldn’t bleme Pards because of the ridiculous eight year contract that somebody gave him.

  • 65 roe997 // Jul 8, 2013 at 7:43 PM

    Big Pappa, I agree.

Joe Blog, as Rotonda said, he spoke better than how I initially thought he may do. However, he was preaching last year on what he’d do in the coming games, like the example I said before, prior to the Liverpool game he said we needed goals. Just like today, yet he puts out arguably the most defensive line up of the year, and we get hammered. He says one thing to get people on his side, then continues to do what he wants.

He even said again today similar to his strong philosophy line about wanting to play his teams a certain way. If that is the case, we have no hope.

  • 77 Big Pappa Cissé // Jul 8, 2013 at 8:03 PM

    @ Robert

I just don’t believe a word that comes out of his mouth anymore. I remember watching a Spain game during the Euros a couple of years ago and Pardew was one of the pundits. He said he admired the way spain retain possession and pass it around and he thinks that is the future of the game and we wants to use the system.

Fast forward to last season and the most long balls in the league and little to no movement at all of the ball. Now all of a sudden he wants to attack the goal more. This coming from a guy that plays defensive football against Reading at home FFS.

Fair enough if the guy was a relatively inexperienced manager but he is in his 50′s and been in management for a long time. I fully believe he has reached the limits of his coaching ability and just says what he wants people to hear. Whether the words come from him or the Puppet master Ashley.

hate to keep repeating myself …but a leftsided centreback should be priority one
priority two is striker …could be franco di santo…or jordan rhodes would fit bill …sinclair or tom ince for left side …
in the past mashley wanted players out before anyone in …so imo expect a couple of signings in next few weeks..

That statement doesn’t actually mean anything. They were unaware of the bets and don’t know where the people who placed them got the info. Could quite easily be ‘shit, who leaked it!’. No denial there my friends. No denial and positive thinking…

  • 100 Jail for Ashley // Jul 8, 2013 at 8:37 PM

This time last year I was starting to get a bit impatient as I thought we were dragging our heels a hit in the transfer market, I had no idea at the time we had absolutely no intention of signing anybody but Anita and hoping Cabaye or Tiote went for big money, the reason I was impatient was because after a great season and listening to views on here that claimed that Mashley had ambition and wanted to push us on, a year later and I think it is apparent to everybody bar the few remaining with their head in the sand that Mike Ashleys aim is to have us treading water in the PL his other supporters who don’t have their heads in the sand seem content with this as they are happy we are not Leeds or Portsmouth, so there won’t be any disappointment or anger this summer if we don’t sign anybody only a little sadness as I wont be going to SJP next season as I really have had enough of this shambolic ownership.

  • 101 van-damn-bad-man // Jul 8, 2013 at 8:40 PM

But JFA, we have to replace the players that we have, right? I don’t see much happening, but getting some young players with potential could not hurt.

  • 102 FootballPsycho // Jul 8, 2013 at 8:41 PM

Personally if it was up to me (which I know it is not) I would do the following:

Out: Shola, Williamson, S.Taylor(see In) plus other obvious candidates/deadwood (Jonas etc.)

In: Remy (in swap with S.Taylor), N’Koulou, Sakho, Gameiro, Sinclair, Bent

This would leave us with centre backs: N’Koulou/Coloccini/Yanga-Mbiwa/Sakho, Sinclair can play No.10 role and this will push gouffran up front in his more natural role and so will give us striking options of cisse/remy/gameiro/gouffran/bent

Would b a decent squad, easily top 10 with those defensive and attacking options

    Thoughts?

  • 103 roe997 // Jul 8, 2013 at 8:45 PM

Zarate only 26. Once 20mil player with a 60m get clause. Argie so he would fit under colos leadership id imadgine. The more i think about it,the more it makes sense. I could see him hitting form again in prem. Plays a 10/second striker/winger. Great freekick and penalty. And hes on a free.

  • 104 Jail for Ashley // Jul 8, 2013 at 8:49 PM

    Van dam
We are woefully short in the forward positions, Shola should be nicely told to retire or go elsewhere and Campbell should be on loan, sometimes I feel like banging my head against the wall, Patoon claimed earlier that if players were leaving that it’s obvious we’ll replace them where the fusk has he been hiding for the last six years.

  • 105 joeinthecheapseats // Jul 8, 2013 at 8:52 PM

Mcechran has looked good in carling cup games for Chelsea and also on loan at the boro.
Good footballer but very slight build from what I’ve seen for a million quid wouldn’t be a gamble at all if he doesn’t cut it in the premiership could be sold to a championship team.

Well I see we’ve missed out on David Villa now. Damn! I was counting on Joe’s name and reputation getting him across the line for us. I suppose it will be the same with Suarez then? Never fear there are still many extremely talented players that are drooling over the thought of coming to us now. I don’t know their names but Joe does. It’s all taken care of lads and lasses. All our worries for the club are over. Joe’s brother-in-law knows a lad who knows a lad who knows a really good striker. He used to play for Wimbledon and he’s getting on a bit so he will be the perfect price for us.

  • 112 Premiership Manager // Jul 8, 2013 at 9:19 PM

I’d love to see McEachran at the club, he has a great engine, is a good passer of the ball and is a superb prospect, better IMO than Gosling or Guthrie, however like many players of the same mould he needs first team football.

Sinclair and Hoilett would be superb signings and if we got £12M + for Cabaye, sold HBA and secured McEachran, Sinclair and Hoilett and a forward I’d be a very happy man.

I do get annoyed when people sing the praises of Cabaye and HBA citing them as world beaters because the reality is Cabaye is a very good midfielder but not in the same league as Hazzard, Fellini, Modric etc. He’s not worth £25M and a £12M + bid would secure his services.

HBA despite showing signs of brilliance is a liability who can easily upset his team mates by giving away possession. He’s not a team player, never will be and for me is too old to change which is why he does not get into the national team.

Although Pardew has his critics and I am one when it comes to tactics, he is an honest manager who’s days may be numbered at the club. I’m not looking forward to this season and that is something I have never done.

It’s going to be a roller coaster ride and I can’t see it going smoothly despite having one of the best fixture lists in the league.

Both players should be scoring 10 goals a season with at least 10 assists.

Person wanted for new Newcastle United position of Assistant to the Director of Football. Qualifications:
    1. must be willing to listen to endless streams of bollocks from immediate superior
    2. must be ready and able to immediately respond to requests from the press or supporters organizations for clarification of statements made by the DoF.
    3. must be willing to carry out the crucial task of buying presents for the owner Mike Ashley. Bottles of wine are no longer a top priority present as previous MD provided hundreds to the owner during his distinguished stay at the club.
    4. most importantly, must be willing to carry the blame for any lack of progress by the team in the coming season.

Keep doing it and getting it right, then they will gain trust, no point in people lying about it because they will get found out straight away

I think our latest cunning plan from Joe is to wait for Villa to actually get desperate enough to pay someone to take Bent off their hands. Then he will step in and haggle over how much they are willing to pay and blow the deal. After that we’ll move on to Carlton Cole and try the same approach.

  • 132 Ian Toon // Jul 8, 2013 at 9:45 PM

Rotonda – Do i sense some long awaited rethink? Have lessons been learnt? I like you reserve judgement, let’s just wait and see.

Pre season is a time for optimism or why be a fan. From my experience Pardew does communicate in a far more lucid and
open manner when addressing comments to the fans. He will want signings because he knows the area of the team that needs to be strengthened if we are to progress. He will want to send a clear message to potential departures like Cabaye..

He is left to manage fan expectations because our PR is abysmal. We still need a Chris Mort character to generally present a more professional image.

  • 133 toon kk // Jul 8, 2013 at 9:45 PM

Its going to be like last summer transfer window, waiting for a few good signings to come in and probably end up with just one. Alot are brain washed by MA tight way of running the club thinking it’s a good idea. Well I prefer ambition, I don’t mean spend silly amounts but surely a club like Newcastle could spend a decent amount on a top striker. Teams like Swansea show ambition we show none.

  • 134 mikeashleyisamackem // Jul 8, 2013 at 9:51 PM

i have a good feeling about abel hanadez he has been scouted by carr he plays for palmero and they just been relagated and he is top top notch ,real madrid tried to sign him on the cheap a year ago ,he is a real poacher of the andy cole brand of poaching he would be available for 8 million relagation release clause and would only demand wages of 50000 a week which would be double what he gets now ,also pablo sarabia is sitting on the getafe bench as he fell out with his manager he is a spanish u21 but he is tipped to be the new mendietta ,they are very simular type of player he has bags of ability really skillfull and he actually can cross a ball ,sunderland are also after these players according to rumours i have read but lets hope we also go after them coz if we get them we will be in very good hands

  • 135 GeordieTwo // Jul 8, 2013 at 9:52 PM

Ketsy hasnt given up on Scharner then :|

If teams like Swansea and Norwich are snapping up our so-called targets, what does that say about:-

    1/ Us?
    2/ The ‘targets’?

  • 142 Beattie25 // Jul 8, 2013 at 10:11 PM

    Tsunki

It shows that Norwich and Swansea are not put off by they perceived small stature and the fact that they cannot compete with bigger clubs.

They are showing massive ambition not to only survive but to grow and progress.

That is attractive to players so it shows that our targets want to be a part of a progressing club and that we are not a club looking to progress (currently).

  • 143 Tsunki // Jul 8, 2013 at 10:13 PM

Beattie – or, possibly, we are aiming at low targets?

  • 144 mikeashleyisamackem // Jul 8, 2013 at 10:16 PM

as far as i am concerned there is always a target who can take you forward there is always someone better than ya last target , pea for example who is better and same type a player ? who can replace cabaye if he goes home to psg and who could blame him ,and who could be are very own gillespie who can do a job on one of are wings and which young cb could come in and complete our defence in replace of mike williamson ?, thats a striker a winger a cmid player and defender ,that is the bare minumum we will need to start the season if we offload who is been talked about !,would love to hear peoples thoughts on this and obviously would have to be realistic targets

  • 145 Tsunki // Jul 8, 2013 at 10:18 PM

Actually I think its all smoke and mirrors> we arent going after a quarter of supposed targets at all. The real reason they go to Norwich etc is because in the end we dont actually go in for them. We probably aren’t going in for anyone, poss a striker backup, because MA has spent enough for the minute, he wants to keep the petty cash box full for 4 months if he can.

  • 146 Beattie25 // Jul 8, 2013 at 10:21 PM

  • 150 mikeashleyisamackem // Jul 8, 2013 at 10:26 PM

  • 151 Tsunki // Jul 8, 2013 at 10:30 PM

@150 – I would like to think not. But recent events make me think otherwise. Prepare for 4 months of riding out with the first team and fringe players being tested first. Yes I know they didnt step up last time, but you never know…….

  • 152 GeordieTwo // Jul 8, 2013 at 10:41 PM

And we really need to get the best out of Sammi and Adam Campbell, which Pardew has failed to do so. Look at when Michael Owen was first playing for the Liverfools.
