Alan Pardew today has admitted that both Darren Bent and Loic Remy are on Newcastle’s list of striker targets this summer.
Loic Remy – on Newcastle’s list
And both strikers are expected to leave their clubs this summer, Bent because he is not wanted by Villa, and Remy because he doesn’t want to play in England’s second division.
That;s especially true for the 26 year-old Frenchman because the World Cup is next year in Brazil, and he wants to make the French World Cup squad.
This is what Pardew told the Northern Echo today:
“Both of those players are on our list. I make no bones about that.”
“But they are under contract at other clubs. It’s difficult, you have to be careful. It’s nice for our fans to hear names, but I don’t want to disrupt other clubs’ preparations.”
“We have a list of four or five strikers who will push Papiss Cisse, Shola Ameobi, Adam Campbell and Yoan Gouffran because that will be important next season.”
“We do need two strikers. Last year, I didn’t think there was enough competition in that area for a Premier League team.”
So Alan also admits for the first time that we need two strikers through the door this summer.
At the moment it seems it would cost Newcastle around £8M for Remy and about £6M for Bent, but obviously (as usual) Newcastle will attempt to being those fees down so they get good deals.
But if the club can get both strikers through the door this summer, we should be in very good shape next season to be able to score a few goals.
And it seems Newcastle are willing to forgive and forget Remy’s refusal to join Newcastle in January, when a deal seemed to be almost done – and of course since then the Frenchman was accused of rape in May, and that case still has to be heard in the courts.
And if two good strikers are brought in this summer, then Newcastle could also allow Shola Ameobi to leave the club to get more first team football elsewhere.
