Another Newcastle Bid Turned Down – It’s Not Enough

The Daily Mirror reported today that Newcastle’s  bid to sign goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet was a done deal, but we guess not, as sources in Holland are telling talkSPORT that his club, PSV Eindhoven have turned down a £1.7M offer from Newcastle for their 22 year-old 6’3″ goalkeeper.

The bid was reported to be £2.5M by the Mirror so the fee being talked about is also different, but the news is that PSV rejected Newcastle’s bid immediately – it’s simply not high enough.

PSV apparently see the star 22-year-old Dutch U21 goalkeeper as important for them in the future – translation – they want more money for him.

We were surprised that Newcastle were even after a goalkeeper, since Alan Pardew seemed happy enough with back-up goalkeeper Rob Elliot last season, and Rob played very well overall, and the 27 year-old has improved a lot since arriving on Tyneside from Charlton two years ago, by his own admission.

But we think Alan Pardew likes to have three experienced goalkeepers in the squad, and is probably trying to replace the departed veteran Steve Harper.

20 year-old Jak Alnwick is now Newcastle’s third choice goalkeeper, but could be sent out on loan this coming season to get first team experience.

We don’t know if Newcastle will go back with an improved bid to PSV – but maybe not.
