Another Newcastle Bid Turned Down – It’s Not Enough

4:41 pm, Wednesday, July 10th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 316 Comments

The Daily Mirror reported today that Newcastle’s  bid to sign goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet was a done deal, but we guess not, as sources in Holland are telling talkSPORT that his club, PSV Eindhoven have turned down a £1.7M offer from Newcastle for their 22 year-old 6’3″ goalkeeper.

zoet

Jeroen Zoet – 22 year-old PSV goalkeeper

The bid was reported to be £2.5M by the Mirror so the fee being talked about is also different, but the news is that PSV rejected Newcastle’s bid immediately – it’s simply not high enough.

PSV apparently see the star 22-year-old Dutch U21 goalkeeper as important for them in the future – translation – they want more money for him.

We were surprised that Newcastle were even after a goalkeeper, since Alan Pardew seemed happy enough with back-up goalkeeper Rob Elliot last season, and Rob played very well overall, and the 27 year-old has improved a lot since arriving on Tyneside from Charlton two years ago, by his own admission.

But we think Alan Pardew likes to have three experienced goalkeepers in the squad, and is probably trying to replace the departed veteran Steve Harper.

20 year-old Jak Alnwick is now Newcastle’s third choice goalkeeper, but could be sent out on loan this coming season to get first team experience.

We don’t know if Newcastle will go back with an improved bid to PSV – but maybe not.

What do you think?

Well if you’re not going to believe anything that the club says, what’s the point in discussing it? You can believe whatever story you want if it’s just speculation.

We don’t have masses of money to overhaul the squad and we don’t need a huge number of players. The sensible thing is to wait for the right deal. There haven’t been any signings from other clubs yet that I thought we should really have been in there instead so I don’t see the problem at all.

  • 5 kevymartins // Jul 10, 2013 at 4:57 PM

@TDS It’s like talking to a brick wall, why rush in for players like kone when you can just wait, play it smart, Patience is the key, and I have a instinctive feeling that a lot of people on this blog will be relieved and happy by the time the market shuts.

  • 6 nut meg // Jul 10, 2013 at 4:58 PM

Just as a matter of interest doe’s anybody know for sure who from nufc puts the valuation on the players we want to buy ? Is it Carr,Pardew,Kinnear or Ashley ? only asking cos they all take a hella long time to sort out.

  • 7 DevonToon // Jul 10, 2013 at 4:59 PM

Sissoko + goofy, whos contracts where running out where supposed to be signed in the summer for free. Wasnt that confirmed at the time?!?!

  • 8 Phatoon // Jul 10, 2013 at 4:59 PM

    @ToonDarnSarf

Pretty sure Gouffran was a brought forward as well (he was supposed to be free this summer). I think Yanga-Mbiwa was a delayed from the summer (as was Debuchy. Not sure when Haidara was meant to be bought.

  • 9 stuart no9 // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Into the 2nd week of july now and its good to see all our transfers running smoothly. the 2nd week of july and all we have to show for it is a 16 year old kid., bearing in mind we didnt have a CF for most of the season , i would have thought that would have been the priority. shambles absolute shambles . joke’s earning his money then !

  • 10 Phatoon // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:01 PM

    @ToonDarnSarf *amended to make sense!*

Pretty sure Gouffran was a brought forward as well (he was supposed to be free this summer).

  • 14 jazzyp // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:09 PM

7 month since ba left the toon. I would have thought Carr and the scouting staff would have had our intended targets lined up to the board.
Yet we’ve gone back in for remy, who will make a quality addition I might add.but if qpr had survived relagation we wouldn’t even be contemplating this target. And as for bent, excellent player in his day-but past his best by far

  • 15 daztoon // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:25 PM

    @jazzyp
It always takes an age to replace what we need.Campbell left and it took over a year to replace him. Loven and Best left and took over six months to bring in cover.

  • 16 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:29 PM

If the majority of fans are pleased by the end of the window I’ll be very surprised.

In order for that to happen we would need to bring in about 4 players and if the board brings in 4 players that would seriously improve the squad I’d be flabbergasted.

Not saying it won’t happen, but it is unlikely.

  • 17 jordijohnty // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Is it true that kinnear is on holiday as of the start of the transfer window opening? I thought he had been on a long break since spring 2009, or am I missing something?

  • 18 HullMag6 // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:32 PM

Remy was Ba’s replacement or that was the theory until gazumped by qpr with no plan b.

Beginning of the end for lambeezy that was.

  • 19 toon kk // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:36 PM

Kevy@5………lets hope you’re right but I have an awful feeling it’s going to turn out like last summer leaving alot disappointed. MA doesn’t like spending. He had to in january or we would have been relegated.

  • 20 toonluvva // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:40 PM

I expect that we tried to get this lad on the cheap.

Nothing wrong with that if it leaves some more cash in the kitty for the next target.

If we think we need another keeper and rate him enough then we should go back in at say £2m. Obviously we have a top price in mind for him and won’t go above it. Just please don’t be too stingy.

I’d still like to see 2 strikers please and perhaps another young central defender to bring on for a couple of years time.

    Hope you agree JoKe.

  • 21 WWYCD // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:42 PM

I think some people want to be miserable!

I can see the sense in going in for Kone though. His release clause was relatively low and we know he wanted to leave. He’s a good buy for Everton and his wages won’t be too high either.

I’m happy that we were in for him and I hope we stick it out to get the right deal. I don’t want us to pay £12M for a player like Bony that no CL teams were after, I’d rather sign a player who wants to be a regular for a CL team but isn’t quite ready. We can sign him for £10M or so, give him regular first team football and then either he gets CL football with us or he moves on for £20M+

  • 24 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:46 PM

    DevonToon

I’m not sure what you were getting at about Sissoko and Goofy? They were both going to be free in summer apparently but they cost a few mill in January and they do get paid a lot in wages too.

  • 25 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:48 PM

    Phatoon

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that MYM was supposed to be bought last Summer. Debuchy, Sissoko and Goofy were brought forward though. I think we would also have liked to have signed a replacement for Ba, so that’s where we’re lacking I think.

Haidara is a normal transfer just adding to the youth team I think. We need to keep signing prospects like that who can challenge the first team and be sold on for decent money if they don’t quite make it.

  • 26 WWYCD // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:49 PM

Why don’t we have masses of money to overhaul the squad? Pretty sure we are the 20th richest club in the world, we aren’t on the bread line

  • 27 Tommyy // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:49 PM

Another day we get weaker relative to others in the league, ah well it’s only a game.

  • 28 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:50 PM

    daztoon

It’s one thing questioning what the club is telling us, and another thing completely to believe that the club is always lying to us to suit an agenda that you believe they have.

It makes perfect sense that Debuchy, Sissoko and Goofy were going to be signed in the summer. Simpson was covering at RB and we wanted to get them for free. It’s logical.

  • 29 Tommyy // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:52 PM

Of all the young players we have, Haidara is the most promising for me. He plays like a young Evra and has everything to be just as good if not better.
Once experience allows him to improve his positioning and decision making he will be our starting left back for certain.

  • 30 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:53 PM

    WWYCD

We are the 20th richest club in the world in the costliest league in the world. 20th also means that we are behind Utd, Chelsea, City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs, plus 13 other clubs who often play in the CL.

We don’t have masses of money because about 70% of our revenue last year was spent on wages. Check out the accounts.

  • 31 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:53 PM

How the hell do you know what sissoko or goofy are on wages!!!
And they didn’t cost a few mil goofy wasn’t even a million euros and socks was like one and a half

  • 33 daztoon // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:55 PM

Debuchy wasn`t brought forward he was our target all last summer and was a certain for January. If Simpson had been fit in January he would have been sold.Ashley needs every penny us not having being a rich club

  • 34 terencelim // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:57 PM

Not quite sure why some fans are so obsessed with players’ wages rather than football performance.

In most cases clubs pay higher wages usually achieve more (league position, titles etc). Wages has probably nothing to do with the quality of players but surely there’s something to do with the vision and how ambitious a club is and the performance speaks for itself.

  • 35 DevonToon // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:57 PM

TDS yea im at work.. Takes me ages to post then i forget what my point was… I see so many people say most of our signing where brought forward from this summer, i was pointing out only sissoko and goof was planned for this summer due to them being on a free…

I’m sorry but when the fcuk did the toon army start working for the tax man?
More keen on the accounts than what’s happening on the pitch, seriously it’s embarrassing

20th costly club in the world? Behave!!! Are players are on bloody peanuts ffs the only high earners are pre pardew and even then there only on an average top 7 wage!
No money is spent on the academy none on improving staff none on strengthening the team

  • 37 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 10, 2013 at 5:58 PM

    toonarmydownsouth

Well they’re not on £25,000 per year are they?!

You can bet that they’ll be on at least £20kpw and quite possibly a bit more. The point is that it’s daft to say that we’re not spending money when we have signed players. Ok, so €2.5M is a couple of million pounds, plus I’m sure there were signing on fees, agency fees etc. plus their wages. It’s still a lot of bloody money!

Where are we squirrelling it away??? It really is bloody annoying with you lot seemingly convinced that we’re not going to sign anyone this summer when it’s only bloody July 10th!

  • 38 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:01 PM

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Detach yourself from the club emotionally, step back and prepare for the worst yet hope for the best.

While AP is manager and MA is owner we’re on a nothing road to nowhere so the time spent cursing their mismanagement is futile.

I’m simply going to try and enjoy the ride until the fat one buggers off and the muppet mouthpiece is exposed as the clueless charlatan he is.

  • 39 toon kk // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:02 PM

We play in the richest league in the world of course players wages will be reflected in that. As for competing with the other 19 up there I didn’t ask to but Christ lets not act like we are skint eh? It’s embarrassing

Other teams in the league are spending money they have we are currently standing still. Of course they should get the right deal but those aren’t always cheap and they can be sorted out before the windows open

  • 41 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:03 PM

    toonarmydownsouth

You’re being daft now. In season 2011-12, our wage bill was £64M. That was the 8th highest in the league that season, higher than Everton, Fulham and QPR for example.

We may have had the 7th highest revenue, but we spent 69% of our revenue on wages.

So when you’re going to spout of things about our player’s wages, maybe you should get your facts right.

  • 42 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:04 PM

    TDS
Not half as annoying as hearing how well we’re being run every day
£20k a week, yeah it’s a lot to you or me but guess what were not a top flight football team ffs!
Howay man there are championship clubs that pay that in wages, they also pay signing on fees transfer fees and agent fees that’s not something that’s unique to us
Oh and the signing on fees would be considerably less than when they were free agents

As for squirrelling away, when you scrape survival, desperately need players through the door and appoint a DOF to handle transfers because you’ve sacked the last fella for not getting business done, you then get fcuking business done not p1ss around for 6 weeks after the season finishes and see what scraps are left on the reduced to clear shelf

  • 43 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:04 PM

I understand what your saying regarding taking your time to find the right candidate for that position. But we are a pl club and time after time nufc shoot theirselves in the nuts and crackers with the way we handle the transfer market
January was a must otherwise we would have gone down.last summer when we had our best finish for years should have been the time to act as we would have attracted better players with the attraction of Europa football

Happy? I was bloody delighted the season we got promoted, after we got rid of the damn mercenaries like Owen, Smith, Martins, Duff etc. Delighted when we finished 5th with young, hungry and ambitious players too. I’m happy we’re not just splashing out money for the sake of it and spending £15M on 29 year old players with a 5 years contract on £80kpw. That attitude drives me nuts.

When the likes of Villa, Norwich and Swansea have shown ambition and got players wrapped up already, then it’s understandable why some fans are disgruntled, given our small squad and dire need to invest this summer some would’ve thought there’d be movement by now.

We need to stop quibbling over pounds and pennies. We’re a multi million pound company with a billionaire owner, this penny pinching is embarrassing.

  • 63 fatfreddie // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:18 PM

I’m just as frustrated with the transfer window as everyone else. It’s quite clear in what areas we need too strengthen. A left winger with an eye for the goal and a good crosser (Sinclair), a pacy forward (Remy). That’s the priorities.

We are seeing teams around us getting business done like Norwich, Sunderland, Liverpool and a few others. But there’s one thing we are forgetting and most likely our delay in transfers. Many teams around us have a lower quality abroad their squad and can easily find improvements cheaply around Europe.

We haves good and solid squad already which means we are looking at players in a bracket over the others. Problem is they are costly. Money Ashley aren’t really willing to spend. So we need to find those quality players with a lower price tag which is hard and most likely time consuming.

    That’s my thoughts anyway.

  • 64 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:18 PM

I’m going on about the accounts a lot??? Yeah, that’s because of all the muppets saying that we should spend all that money on players that we have sitting in the bank account. Garbage. What’s the point in people demanding that the club spends more money and slagging off the owner when they don’t even understand whether the club has money or not.

Season 2011-12, we generated £94M (only £24M was from gate and matchday) which was the 7th highest in the PL. Of that £94M, £64M was wages!

It’s one thing saying that you’d like an owner who would put in say £20M a year of his own money as a gift to help grow the club, but it’s hardly fair for you to expect that of a man that most of you call a “fat c**t” most of the time. And I don’t exactly see a queue of billionaire Geordies willing to stick in £20M a year and also spend £300M buying the club, do you?

How about you stop focussing on the accounts and actually look at the reality of the decent squad that we have, the possibilities for strengthening our weaknesses, and the prospect of a decent season with our key players remaining fit and us finishing 7th or 8th or even better?

  • 65 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:19 PM

Do you actually watch the media circus that is Newcastle? Have you built this high expectation based on the one great window and one window driven by blind panic and the other 10 windows of no real strengthening we’ve had under mike Ashley?
Or do you sit in a corner with your fingers in your ears going NANANANANANANANA?

But it’s okay we’re craftily scheming for the nose bleeding heights of tenth place driven by the ambitious mike Ashley
    6 years 1 good season

  • 77 GeordieTwo // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:27 PM

TDS@68 we do have a thin squad, especially up front. One decent striker (Cisse) and an apprentice (Campbell). Oh we also have that amazing 1 goal scorer Shola from last season’s league games. We also have a number of useless players such as Obertan hanging around. We also have an injury prone squad because of poor training and fitness producing disasters like Vuckic and Gosling. We need to spend proper money, and do it starting now.

Last season we had absolutely no cover, so nobody is saying we’ve got worse but if you can’t see we have no quality in depth at all then there is something very wrong
    No natural wingers
    One proven CF
One decent RB and alot of people who can play there a bit but certainly not adequate cover for injuries
Two decent CB’s one injury prone bench warmer and mike williamson
A midfield packed with defensive talent and equally packed with injury prone attacking talent

TDS take your point, trouble is everyone else has moved forward more quickly than us. Last season was ruined by Christmas because of a lack of activity in the transfer market. Our dealings in January should have been done last summer.
Pardew stated in January that the club made a mistake by not strengthening last summer. We’re in danger of making the same mistake.

You mean the media circus that is Newcastle because fans like you are so damn easy to wind up? Because when a football fan at work makes a comment about our club, you then spend the next 5 minutes slagging off the owner, the manager, the DoF, the quality of the squad etc. The media bloody love it because we’re easy to wind up.

    History of Ashley at Newcastle
    – Summer 2007 – MA buys club for around £134M but screws up and doesn’t notice around another £100M of debt
    – Summer 2007 – MA sticks to the transfer plans and makes net spend of around £8M under Big Sam
    – Jan 2008 – MA tries to make the popular decision and gets rid of Big Sam due to his style of play and brings in KK (decision based on emotion, not logic). At this point, MA was loving sitting in the stands with the fans.
    – Summer 2008 – MA realised that KK is a dinosaur in terms of modern football management and needs someone above him. Screws up by appointing Wise.
    – 2008/9 – KK walks out (rightly – and later vindicated in court), JFK and Shearer send us down with a team full of overpaid donkeys and some decent players who didn’t perform
    – 2009/10 – MA backs the club with his own cash to ensure we kept key players and we got promoted with a record total
    – 2010/11 – we sign Tiote and Ben Arfa and make a massive £35M on Carroll. Miss out on top half on the final game. Not bad for a newly promoted team
    – 2011/12 – we sign Cabaye, Ba, Santon and Cisse for net outlay of around £12M. Miss out on CL on the last day
    – 2012/13 – we sign Anitam Debuchy, MYM, Sissoko, Goofy and others for net outlay of around £14M. Poor performance in the league due to many key players not performing or being injured.

Realisticly, where would you see the current squad finish this coming year.

  • 92 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:43 PM

    Ruddy

No. We’re not a top 6 squad and it will take years for us to be established there. Face it, Spurs and Liverpool are the 5th and 6th biggest clubs in the PL right now and their revenues are miles bigger than ours, their wages bills are miles bigger than ours, and their squads have been grown over many years with both clubs being in the top 10 pretty much every years for 10 years.

We don’t play with out and out wingers, neither do Chelsea really. But we do have the likes of Goofy, Ben Arfa and Marveaux to fill the roles of the likes of Mata, Oscar or Hazard.

I agree though. We need one first team striker to compete with Cisse and one attacking midfielder/winger.

  • 96 HullMag6 // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:46 PM

  • 97 GeordieTwo // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Quality squad depth Joe. Start thinking about it now. And I’m not talking about players like Obertan and Shola. Why was Perch the first to go? Would someone actually pay for him? Nobody interested in Obertan and Shola Joe? And what about future stars like Amalfitano? Clear them out Joe. Then bring in some decent replacements. Do your job Joe and stop telling everyone how amazing you are. Let us decide that.

  • 98 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:46 PM

    TADS

Yeah, as I’ve said before 5th place was an overperformance.

Compare our squad strength to the likes of Everton, Sunderland or Villa. Those are definitely 3 clubs that should be up in the top 10 with us based on the size of club they are. I’d say we compare favourably.

  • 99 viv // Jul 10, 2013 at 6:47 PM

Once uncle Joe, gets back from his holiday. Old Pardew, will be told he is surplus and sacked. Then the ins and outs will start for real. We’ve needed a decent crossing winger for ages. Apparently nobody in the squad (except perhaps Ben Arfa) can take consistently decent corners. The list of inadequacies goes on and on.

Why do people look at the window and assume it will be negative? Because of one bad window?

I’m not bothered about any of these players going to Norwich or Swansea. If we really wanted them, I believe they would have joined us. Sure we lost PEA because he wanted to go to BvB, and we lost Kone because he wanted to play for Martinez. I can handle that.

A club where everything is working well doesn’t finish 16th and have a manager whining about having to play in Europe. Then Pardew says how relieved he is not having European games this season. MA loaned the club around £100M to pay off debts when the club was bought. Ok, £87M if other people are correct. He then loaned the club a bit more for operational costs the next year and about £30-40M to keep us ticking over the season we were relegated. All in all, I believe there is a £267M purchase price for MA to break even. That includes the £137M original purchase price and £130M of interest free loans that he’s given the club.

For the fans that actually want the team to come out and say WE want too really push the top 6 not aim for top 10, we need more than 1 or 2 signings, 2 need to be strikers, a winger and overall players with pace. I think it’s fairly clear from Pardew’s recent statements that we’re not getting a fullback in. He says Mbiwa can cover both fullback positions. So then if Mbiwa gets injured what happens? As for wingers I don’t even think we’re looking. Carr probably has a few on a list but we have the amazing Obertan as backup. Vuckic should manage to stay fit for at least 2 games so we have cover at AMF. What are we worried about lads and lasses? Alan and Joe have it all sussed.

    Farman joe
Think your missing the point tbh
Nobody is saying we need to make a signing because Norwich have
The worry is that the teams that finished around us are all strengthening sensibly, and actually alot of there signings are players we were linked with so the calibre of player is decent
It’s all well saying well we shouldn’t of finished 16th last season with the squad we have, the fact is we did and there’s nothing to say we won’t again and MA has a responsibility to ensure that doesn’t happen again

  • 151 croftus5678 // Jul 10, 2013 at 7:28 PM

    @134+135

i’m with kevy on this one forgetting the fee ashley paid for the club (which is blks about ashley claiming it in his loan as the money he paid for the club is there when he sells it) the debt alone was over 100mil (obv it was ashes fault for not investigating before putting his money on the table though)
and at the time our wages and running costs over the year was on a minus for previous years past meaning it was losing money (but agree it would not have gone into admin as things would have changed at some point before that time i.e. selling star players ect) and i would guess we had another 5 years or so before we was up sh*t creek.

i like ashley has made us fend for ourselves on that front but i also believe he makes a bloody good profit from us also and that the club is gaining value also for when he sells.

unfortunatly i think swansea will overtake us this season with there signings and scumderland all i can hope for is that all there players flop :-)

  • 153 FatmanJoe // Jul 10, 2013 at 7:33 PM

Just because we were linked doesn’t mean we were actually ever in for them. You know that right?

We have a team than most of the teams that were around us but we had a rotten season of injuries.

I’m not saying we don’t need to sign. I’m sure we are going to sign some quality players. Clearly if we were willing to spend 13-15m on one player we are going to spend that kind of money on others.

Has the thought occurred to anyone else that the reason why nothing is happening in the transfer market as far as we’re concerned might be because we could be showing pardew the door at any moment.

JFK going on holiday at the most important time of the transfer window is wrong on all fronts and there must be reason why he’s keeping his distance and nowt is happening

  • 158 GeordieTwo // Jul 10, 2013 at 7:35 PM

I see Norwich have signed Martin Olsson now. A very decent fullback from what I recall and an international. Who have we signed Joe? Oh that’s right we don’t need anyone. When you finish 16th you are in a clear position of superiority. And as I recall Pardew has already stated that only the top 4 clubs can sign players early in the window. Is that a new rule that we’re not aware of Alan? Already having to make excuses for Joe are we?

The thing that is worrying me is the fact that at the rate were going the players we get aren’t going to have anytime to settle in before they’re thrusted into a premier league match and sometimes it takes ages for them to settle.

Just look at our captain Collo, took him a full season to turn into the quality CB we all know and love.

Yet again you’re passing judgement on what the squad think of Pardew, MA and the rest. I’d have Martins back. We need pace and power.

  • 185 djm... // Jul 10, 2013 at 8:06 PM

If we had signed Martin olssen people would have said we weren’t showing ambition.

People need to chill, we are only 3 players away from having a team with two players at least at premier league quality for each position.

If we get a top quality left forward and attacking midfielder like remy and de jong then No need for an out and out striker unless someone leaves (I.e. bent in for shola). Then we just need a young right back to cover and compete with debuchy.

Cisse, Campbell, gouffran, remy, de Jong and, at a push, Ben Arfa can all do a job upfront. With Ben Arfa, gouffran, marveaux, vuckic, remy and de Jong all playing for the three attacking midfield positions.

Cabaye and Anita as the two deep playmakers. Sissoko as the battering ram of a box to box player with tiote as another more defensive option.

Santon with Hidara as back up. Debuchy and young player simalar to Hidara as back up. Colo and MYM with Taylor and Williamson as back up.

Krul with Elliot as back up and Alnwick third choice.

De Jong and remy are only examples of the type of players we should sign, I’m not too keen on remy for the two obvious reasons.

  • 186 FatmanJoe // Jul 10, 2013 at 8:08 PM

Alderweireld is quality, I’d be surprised if he went to Norwich after saying he wanted a move to a European club. I think he’d prefer to wait a year and end up at a top club.

    @ Devon

The mackems have decent strikers in Fletcher and Altidore, also Jonson & Giaccherini (if they sign him)are decent. Sessengon is probably going to leave though so IMO they have 3 decent players possibly 4. Not to mention they lost Mignolet as well.

Although their signings would not look as good if we brought in some quality ;)

  • 191 djm... // Jul 10, 2013 at 8:10 PM

  • 193 GeordieTwo // Jul 10, 2013 at 8:14 PM

Martins plays in Seattle now. He has had a decent start with them considering the league is not great (MLS). I’ve watched him a few times. A little less pace than before but still a surprisingly good passer of the ball. He still knows how to pressure defenses. Not sure how he would do in the Prem at this stage though. Could probably play for the likes of Palace and Hull.

  • 194 Belfast // Jul 10, 2013 at 8:14 PM

I would say it’s probably Kinnear who wants a goalkeeper, and not Pardew.

Or maybe they’re looking to sell Krul.

Have to say though with signings like amat, fer, olsson, RVW, bony, hadj ba and altidore alot seem to be doing a mis justice of just how good the business clubs around us are doing, most are young players looking to step up to the next level, young hungry with European experience

We’re looking at players in bent who have played at that level and peaked and are past there prime

I liked Owen when he first came.
It was the rushing back to play for England and getting injured again, that really ferked me off. Never liked him after that.

  • 241 roblee7 // Jul 10, 2013 at 8:59 PM

Would anyone take Barry n Lescott from city? Never been keen on Barry, but certainly experienced

Martins is/was shite. Missed a boat load to put us down.

  • 244 SeanNufc87 // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:00 PM

Yeah, at throwing the ball 10 feet in front of him? Super distribution.

I swear some of you seem to have short memories, the season we finished 5th krul was passing regularly short and starting attacks. Now for whatever reason this season be it pardew using long balls or the team not confident enough to attack from the back he hasn’t done, but I guarantee he kicked the ball out of play less often all season than Elliott did in one game (not including when under pressure as thats just get rid)

  • 245 Galtierez // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:04 PM

    Gamiero to sign soon?

  • 246 Yohan Kebab // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:04 PM

would take lescott as a saylor upgrade, not barry, we have enough depth there

  • 247 kevymartins // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:04 PM

@Galtirez I think he was the second top goal scorer in our team the year we wen’t down so can’t really blame him, what was the rest of the team at?

Personally I blame duff for us going down.

  • 248 09nufc09 // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:06 PM

Oba martins was a classic example of a brainless striker. If he was in a one on one with the keeper (which he wasnt as much as he should have been with the pace he had) i was never confident he would score, he never placed the ball into a corner to avoid the keeper, he always went for power and more often than not missed/ hit it straight at the keeper. Players like shearer and owen know that if you take off a bit of power and place it into a corner then you will score more times than you miss, thats why they have such good goal scoring records.

  • 249 roblee7 // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:06 PM

Kebab…on barry, on a one or even 2 year contract id take him, any longer n definite no. Lescott wud b great IMO

  • 250 G // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:06 PM

@247, he certainly scored the own goal that did it.

  • 251 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:07 PM

    Sean
It’s still better distribution, doesn’t matter if he’s played the ball 10 yards or 60 yards it keeps possession and allows us to build, garuntee krul turned possession more than any player

  • 252 Toon_Tom // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:08 PM

I blame Kinnear for us going down

  • 253 jazzyp // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:10 PM

    Yohan.
Agree mate,Barry’s legs have gone.dm is where we do have plenty of cover.am is what we crave for to link the midfield to attack and that’s where hopefully a certain mr siem de Jong comes in

  • 254 G // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:12 PM

I would take Lescott. I just wouldn’t fancy our chances of paying his wages though.

  • 255 kevymartins // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:12 PM

@Toon_Tom haha I was waiting on that, Remember big andy with his braids scored that year vs stoke then the lines man gave them a offside goal funny how football works if they didn’t get that goal we would have stayed up.

  • 256 Toon_Tom // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Kevy – indeed, however hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Going down helped us get rid of the money grabbers and overly paid players IMO. Worst time of my life but I think it helped us as a team with the mighty Hughton in charge!

Also – it was nice winning nearly every week ;-)

  • 257 roblee7 // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:16 PM

G – I dunno like, we’re paying colo sumit like 75k a week….thats big wages for Ashley to fork out wen u think about it

  • 258 Galtierez // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:16 PM

Kevy, and the rest mate, and Joke etc. Hate Duff with a passion.Said to him in Morpeth before that game with villa, that he and the team had our support and we would shout like crazy to keep us up. He gave me a dirty look and shook his head! Told him I would loosen his head if he did that again little tw@t. So I guess its my fault he scored an og. Probably said thats for you as he passed it into the net.

  • 259 roblee7 // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:17 PM

Anything happen at 8 o clock then?

  • 260 Toon_Tom // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:19 PM

    Roblee7 – I made a sandwich and had a $hit at 8pm.

What did everyone else get up to? ;-)

We won’t be signing anyone until the weekend at the earliest!

  • 261 G // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:25 PM

Toon-Tom, that’s impressive multitasking, but I have to wonder about the hygiene of your sandwich. I hope you made it for somebody you didn’t like?

  • 262 SeanNufc87 // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:27 PM

Another itk bites the dust eh? Speaking of, where is toon danno? Seems awfully quiet since announcing we have signed remy and bent in a double deal last night…

  • 263 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:28 PM

Damien Duff is the single biggest scumbag that has ever darkened the doors of our football club.

I really don’t think we could sign anyone as detestable as that square headed prick.

  • 264 mikeashleyisamackem // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:29 PM

i think ashley is gonna suprise us in this window ,i have a feeling at least 4 new arrivals ,i think with lambayzee leaving and the joke in here arriving and the mount a stick he has been getting ,would ashley leave him out to dry by not backing him to bring in the purples ,i think we are gonna get a wow signing because its the only thing that will shut people and there negativity the f**k up ,what ya recon ? and no am not on drugs ,alo i am partial to a wee willy bifter .

  • 273 Jail for Ashley // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:36 PM

I don’t know if I’ve ever broached this subject before but just in case I haven’t I can’t fuskin stand Mike Ashleys regime.

  • 274 G // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:38 PM

I hate Duff, I hate Owen (mostly Owen), and I hate the people who were in charge that season. I don’t blame Shearer, as the damage was pretty much beyond his control when he came in, and I think he was pretty much only intended as a figurehead to inspire the troops (Not unlike Keegans first stint and the great escape). I will always hate MA / DL / JFK etc, and I especially dislike the players who used the seasons demise and heirachy as an excuse to put themselves in the shop window (NZog / Bassong etc).

  • 275 Toon_Tom // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:39 PM

Having a rat nibble small holes in his ball sack and then lowering him in to a bath of vinegar is too good for Ashley ^

  • 276 Toon_Tom // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:40 PM

Nzogbia and Bassong both left us for greater things. So far I’m not convinced ;-)

  • 277 G // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:41 PM

Both were capable of being up for the fight, but both of them were looking elsewhere rather than fighting for the team.

  • 278 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:42 PM

    Sean

    To put it mildly.

  • 279 Toon_Tom // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:42 PM

Some say the same about Jose – however he is one that I still admire as a player. Even tho he’s a fool

  • 280 GatesheadMag // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:44 PM

If i was n’zogbia and i lost my place in the side to duff id sulk aswell. Zog looked like he was gonna be a world beater so we signed duff. Roeder get ya head checked

  • 281 Toon_Tom // Jul 10, 2013 at 9:45 PM

We’ll put a cheeky £10M bid in for Nzog just as this window slams shut ;)

If Gouffran isnt a striker or winger can someone tell me what he is?

I keep reading we only have Cisse and no proper wingers – so what is Gouffran? A centre half that Pardew is playing out of position?

  • 290 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 10, 2013 at 10:20 PM

Forget Lescott. Alderweireld is available at a cheaper price and would demand lesser wages. PLus he is 10 times better than Lescott.

  • 291 SeanNufc87 // Jul 10, 2013 at 10:25 PM

I think turkish is right, it looks word for word in fact, even the price of 4m check out the piece ed did on kadar

  • 292 TurkishFan101 // Jul 10, 2013 at 10:25 PM

    @Ketsbaia9

We would get Alderweild but he wouldn’t want to sit on bench so I rather see colloccini get sold along with Williamson and saylor. Bring in Alderweild/Sakho and Zouma or similar young lad.

  • 293 SeanNufc87 // Jul 10, 2013 at 10:27 PM

mikeashleyisamackem, that’s the young Ba, not the Fwd…. but we were linked to the young Ba previously.

Bill-son, right, Gouffran is a forward. Blame Pardew for mis-utilizing.

  • 299 pizzicatochan // Jul 10, 2013 at 10:31 PM

    mikeashleyisamackem, we have signed Kemen.

  • 302 pizzicatochan // Jul 10, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Could we actually consider Lubo, Streete, Good, Mbabu as our backup CBs?

  • 303 pizzicatochan // Jul 10, 2013 at 10:34 PM

If Pardew could adequately utilize Adam Campbell and Gouffran, I think we should be fine for a short while.

  • 304 pizzicatochan // Jul 10, 2013 at 10:39 PM

I still think Chelski will replace Ba before we do.

Whatever happened to the ITK’s saying deals were nearly finalised for Best, DeJong and Remy?

    I’m ITD (in the dark)

  • 310 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 10, 2013 at 10:45 PM

    Sammy a forward? No thanks.

He’ll be away on loan next season if the powers that be have any sense, and if push came to shove I’d say he isn’t good enough to ever be a NUFC player (though that doesn’t mean he won’t be)

I actually have the same opinion about Fergie. I’m not sure any of our youngsters can make it other than Bigi and maybe Campbell. I’d like to think Streete can make it but we’ll have to see.

  • 311 sparky55 // Jul 10, 2013 at 10:47 PM

Vermaelen is going cheap…shouldn’t we go after someone like him with good premiership experience instead of more defenders from mickey mouse leagues

  • 312 djm... // Jul 10, 2013 at 10:48 PM

I don’t consider sammy as anything. At least if we are stuck with another amoebi for 12 years, we will know that mrs amoebi has an incriminating photo of Ashley.

  • 313 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 10, 2013 at 11:04 PM

you lot think you have it all sussed out.i truly laugh at you.pathetic sheep.norwich and swansea have half the wage bill we do.and finished higher so actually earned more revenue outside of ticket sales.if you notice we actually charge reasonable ticket prices and could probably gain alot more if we increased like arsenal.the key issue is that SWANSEA AND NORWICH ARE DEBT FREE.we are not.they can afford to spend as they have NO DEBT.

also my friend itk said that forest are interested in shola and that a young man with brown flowing locks was sighted at benton..
