Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul was linked with a move to Arsenal earlier this year, and reports in the Dutch media today suggest the London club are still interested in the Dutch International.
Tim Krul – would take a big fee to get this lad
One of the weaknesses in the Arsenal side over the last few years has been goalkeeper, and it seems Arsene Wenger wants to strengthen in that position this summer.
There is news on the Dutch site AD.nl a today that Arsenal are still interested in signing the 25 year-old 6’2″ Newcastle keeper.
It seemed the London club were close to a deal for Brazilian International goalkeeper Julio Cesar a couple of weeks ago, and Julio had a very good Confederations Cup this summer and was voted goalkeeper of the tournament, but reports lately have said he may be arranging a deal back to Italy.
The report is that Wenger is keen on Krul, but it will take a big fee for Arsenal to land the player, and we’re not sure they would want to pay that, especially when Cesar can be picked up on a free transfer.
Newcastle have been linked with a number of goalkeepers this summer, which would be consistent with Krul leaving, but we think Pardew just wants to replace Steve Harper in the squad.
What do you think?

Comment #3Torq…whilst you seem to have a good handle on stuff with reference to players being linked to newcastle (keep them coming by the way…always good blog fodder and drags the looneys in from the garden)…do you get to hear much about those that may want to leave.
Whats your thoughts re Cabs and Cisse…and now Krul with this latest offering from ED, and is Tiote gonna run to the hills because of the court thing…who do you think might end up going?

Comment #4I had wondered how long this would take, after us showing an interest in a back up keeper, there would be rumours saying club X were after Krul. Surprised it took this long.

Comment #5Jeff – Cabaye is not better technically than Marveuax. Marveuax has astonishing close control and touch and pick a far more delicate pass.

Comment #6Torqtoon – I disagree, I think at 20 million pounds it would be accepted instantly. His resale would never get higher and he will only decline here as we cock up on a consistent basis and achieve absolutely nothing paralleled with his increasing age.

Comment #7So. Here’s a bit of speculation. What if Ashley understands that the current TV rights fueled bonanza isn’t sustainable. What with money swilling about in other leagues as well. Perhaps the EPL has a shelf life?

Comment #9Is this another typical transfer window……………
This is exactly the same mistakes being made as last. I though MA was a shrewd businessman. Firstly he appoints JoefingKineear – who has done FA since he’s got here apart from wind up and insult anyone who has anything to do with the club. We’ve made one junior player signing….that’s it…..and the best we can come up with on a short list is Darren Bent…..c’mon please….someone run all this clowns out of our club please!

Comment #12Tommyy – Just going off the figures that PSG are looking at for Cabaye mate! And if they thought £20mil was enough, then not sire why they are looking higher than that.
Sparky – don’t hear an awful lot with regards NUFC itself. But cabaye will leave for the right price (not £15-20mil!), cisse isn’t going anywhere, krul isn’t going anywhere. And tiote will be with us next season, I feel.
There won’t be the fire sale that many expect. And people desperate for lots of new players clearly don’t see how great our current squad is.
2-3 New players, GOOD players is all we need. The scum are signing plenty of players, but their squad is still a shadow of ours!!

Thought it was just me.
Pardew quotes
“You like things done sooner rather than later, but if I have to wait a bit longer then I have no problem with that. I could put a team out at Manchester City on the opening day that could win with what we have got.
Really Alan? which side would that be ?
“But we need to strengthen and I need to strengthen this squad to make it ready for a 38-game season.
So that means we aren’t expecting to go very far in the cup competitions !
What a c..t he is. I have never been so despondent and uninterested in a new footy season . ever .In 45 years of being fanatical about it. Thanks Ashley, you fat southern b…..d!
Half the f……s couldn’t even manage 38 games last season and he was still whinging that they were tired.
Most hated Newcastle manager I’ve ever seen. More so than Sourness
He still thinks he’s loved, the deluded b…..d.
Tell you what i think is happening here – Kinnear’s been brought in to screw things up but also to make Pardew look like the good guy, when in fact they are both c….s for stringing us along.
Good point, Taff. When compared to Kinnear, Pards is almost an adopted Geordie.
“Last season, in the end, I felt we were a top-ten team for the last 15 games when those guys (Newcastle’s five January signings) arrived. That kind of went under the radar. One win would have had us jumping four or five places and that would have looked more respectable.”
He just does not get it does he. We obviously did not end up in a relegation battle and humiliating losses to Liverpool and Sunderland. We were Top 10 in Pardews reality.
Feel free to pull me up on this, wasn’t our form in the second half of the season more or less the same as our form the first half of the season i.e abysmal?
We had a purple patch around the close of the transfer window of 3 wins in 4 games which turned into 4 wins from 6. Other than than we never did better than 2 wins in 6 all season.

Comment #19torq…I agree we have a very good squad…just wish we had a very good manager to bring out the best in them.
i’ve being saying the very same all summer…a good squad that needs a winger, another CF and some more cover across the back four.
we’re not a million miles away from having a very competitive squad…but unfortunately a million miles away from having a good manager

Comment #23I think most of our team will be here next year.
Arsenal would not go for Krul, and he would be worth 12-15m if they do! Thats based off Sunderlands Mignolets figures which is fair in my opinion.
Of course you need to take into account Sunderland have signed 6-8 players by the end of this week! Is that
1. A good thing, so many next bodies no time to gel as a team?
2. These “value” players, 3 of them were Free, our only Free signing last year, and the years before have been Gosling, Ba and Amalfitano. Ba was PL proved, and the other 2 have been shadows in our team with arguably 10-15 PL games between them!
I feel Sunderlands free players are in the mold of Amalfitano. We will see, I mean Altidore is the only real signing they have made thus far.
It would also be worthy to note Sunderlands squad stands at 24 INCLUDING all the new signings that have been confirmed, without these additions they would have been looking to youth to sit on the bench week in week out. It had to be done!
I agree with Torq, I feel we are not a selling club (in that we HAVE to sell our best players), the only time we will sell is because we wish too. Name a player other than Ba (clause) and Carroll (extreme amounts of money for standard he was) that we have sold and didnt want to in recent years?
2-3 players away from a decent squad, I feel players in the mold…..
De Jong, Remy, and N’Koulou would be the type of players those 2-3 should be. Remember Colo is getting on (arguably leaving next year), STaylor is nearly always injured, we need to consider another centre back for cover. Williamson should be considered last resort!
Torq has nailed it on the head though, and I very rarely disagree with him on matters as he sees the club very much in the same light as me.

Comment #24ED it dosnt matter what pardew thinks or who he wants to keep or sell – if ash wants a few quid he will sell , joke will make sure of that . i can see that “understudy goalie ” arriving and krul will become a cockney. If ash was looking for a keeper as a no 2 to krul , he certainly wouldnt be paying more than 500,000 – 750,000 .

What’s TOTT ?
You still getting OCD about Pards ?
I hope your blood pressure is okay – there’s steam coming out of that last post …
Firstly – we COULD win at ManC with current players – but the real point is that he wants to strengthen.
The reference to the 38 game season DOES NOT mean he is abandoning the cup competitions before we start the campaign – the inference really is way OTT.
We’ve just got to let it go and get on from where we are… JFK and AP or not

Comment #30Most will accept that we have the makings of a very, very good squad and two or three good signings this summer will set us up perfectly for the coming season and as we proven time and time again they don’t need to be big money signings, but then most would agree that we need to add to the coaching set up and finally get to the bottom of why we pick up so many injuries

Comment #31lets try and emulate barcelona:
krul (already an improvement on valdez)
debuchy (dani alves) mbiwa (pique) colo (puyol) santon (alba)
tiote (busquets)
cabaye (xavi) marveaux (iniesta)
sissoko (sanchez) ben arfa (messi) gouffran (pedro)
front three are a bit of a stretch, especially sissoko, although he is powerful and direct (like sanchez…)

In that case, we are a better side than Chelsea!!!

That’s the whole tragedy in a nutshell.
We have a fantastic squad on paper, full of technically gifted players who play modern pass and move football
which is totally at odds with Pardew’s long ball defensive philosophy.
Pards would be far happier at a Stoke type set up with workaday journeymen, big lumps and no expectations.
Pardew still blames injuries and the Europa and basically anyone and anything but himself, but as Torq alluded to I think the training methods must be pretty archaic to get these type of injuries with players fitness levels an absolute farce for a premiership team.
All the months Blanc didn’t have a job was a no-brainer for us to get him in. As I say I don’t share quite the same contempt for Ashley as some people do but I just wish he’d throw a big contract at a proven and consistently successful and modern technical coach even more than buying players.

Anything further on Bent and/or De Jong mate?
Seems to have gone a bit quiet. AGAIN.
Do we have to wait for JFK to return from his jollies to close any deal?
