Newcastle were first linked with Anderlecht defender Cheikhou Kouyate last November, and the news at the time was that Newcastle were looking to bring the 6’4″ Senegal defender in during the January transfer window.
Cheikhou Kouyate – 23 year-old Anderlecht defender
That didn’t happen, and instead we brought in five Frenchmen, three of whom were defenders, so we don’t know if a priority is another defender in this summer]s transfer window, with Fab Coloccini now deciding to stay at Newcastle.
His agent Tedir Bekir had this to say on the Brussels web-site La Derniere Heure yesterday:
“I won’t give any names, but Cheikhou has contacts with clubs from the middle of the table in England,”
“He hasn’t made a choice yet. The right balance between the sporting challenge, family and finances has to be found.”
The big lad can play at center-back, but has also played in defensive midfield, so he seems a versatile enough player. He joined Brussels FC in 2006, from his home town club ASC Yego Dakar, and then moved to Anderlecht in 2008, after rumors that Arsenal had been scouting the player that summer.
Anderlecht were said to want around €7M for their star player late last year, but if that’s true we cannot see Newcastle paying that amount for a center-back, but maybe Mike Ashley can surprise us.
Kouyate has played around 200 times for Anderlecht with 8 goals, and 5 times for Senegal.
Newcastle want to increase competition for places in several areas of the side this summer, and Kouyate would certainly do that at center-back.
