Newcastle Again Linked With Senegal Defender

Newcastle were first linked with Anderlecht defender Cheikhou Kouyate last November, and the news at the time was that Newcastle were looking to bring the 6’4″ Senegal defender in during the January transfer window.

Cheikhou Kouyate 99

Cheikhou Kouyate – 23 year-old Anderlecht defender

That didn’t happen, and instead we brought in five Frenchmen, three of whom were defenders, so we don’t know if a priority is another defender in this summer]s transfer window, with Fab Coloccini now deciding to stay at Newcastle.

His agent Tedir Bekir had this to say on the Brussels web-site La Derniere Heure yesterday:

“I won’t give any names, but Cheikhou has contacts with clubs from the middle of the table in England,”

“He hasn’t made a choice yet. The right balance between the sporting challenge, family and finances has to be found.”

The big lad can play at center-back, but has also played in defensive midfield, so he seems a versatile enough player. He joined Brussels FC in 2006, from his home town club ASC Yego Dakar, and then moved to Anderlecht in 2008, after rumors that Arsenal had been scouting the player that summer.

Anderlecht were said to want around €7M for their star player late last year, but if that’s true we cannot see Newcastle paying that amount for a center-back, but maybe Mike Ashley can surprise us.

Kouyate has played around 200 times for Anderlecht with 8 goals, and 5 times for Senegal.

Newcastle want to increase competition for places in several areas of the side this summer, and Kouyate would certainly do that at center-back.

    if this is true it would be a more perfect signing right now than i class douglas would have been !

    season to get used to the prem while we still have collo/mbiwa who must be our main 2 cb’s then this lad to play bit parts of the season to get used to it then when collo goes mbiwa/kouyate.

    Actually not a bad move by Pardew / club to remind those who were thinking about our purples that perhaps the way the club were hard nosed over the sale of Andy Carroll will be the same with any future bid for one of our players.

    Pardew wanted a dominant centre back who is good in the air.

    If we indeed had competent and ambitious transfer committee we would have gone after Felipe Santana who moved from Borussia Dortmind to Schalke for 1M Euros .

    I dont think we are after Kouayate either .

    My anatomical knowledge may not be as good as it once was but isn’t a ‘spine’ down the middle?

    Would this not be Cisse, Cabaye, Colo and Krul?

    Can’t see them being replaced by Brits.

    With the loss of Perch and Simpson gone….we need to replace these players. People forget how thin our squad was last season.

    Therefore we need a RB and a CDM of a better quality just to stand still! In addition to that we need a truly attacking midfielder….De Jong would be perfect (Siem) and then two fast wingers/ strikers…..i,e, Jermaine Lens and possibly Remy though not sure I want a problematic player and I was disappointed (very) that he messed us around re: QPR saga. Anyway we need 5 players….yet BAU…….we drag our feet in the transfer window.
    I’m glad I’m busy with work as spending the summer tfr window on here would send me loop de loop! 🙂 I’ve heard they’re a good player in the Dutch league…..LOL 😉

    We could be in serious difficulty come the end of this transfer window, MA is once again choosing the tight b…ard root. It just takes a few of our better players sold and we’ll never get around to replacing them.
    Our first game against man city is on sky sports, watch us get ripped apart.

    @16 spread

    imo we allready have better quality replacements for them in anita/bigi/dummet/santon/hairdryer ! obv santon or hairdryer would move to the other side for cover as i expect santon to be 1st team

    we was overstacked in this area imo and needed to lose players so we can get cover in cb/wing’s and forward lines.

    Who have we not replaced?? Ba. That’s it.

    We are shipping out lower ability players right now! And its about time.

    Our injury record is horrific. Through both bad luck, and poor rehab.

    Management and ownership at times have been questionable. However, had it NOT been for MA we would be selling players dirt cheap, whereas now, we don’t have to sell anybody as we are financially sound.

    Add to that;

    Cabaye
    Santon
    Sissoko
    Gouffran
    Yanga-mbiwa
    HBA
    Krul
    Haidara
    Debuchy

    All top quality players, who we wouldn’t have if circumstance were different.

    Has anyone seen this guy play either in the flesh or full games on TV & i don’t mean on you tube ? I think we need a new CB who is quick cos I really think we will play a pressing game further up the pitch.Last season we were caught out a few times with balls played over the top of Collo/Taylor /Williamson & they were beaten for pace.I haven’t seen him /sakho & or some of the others CB’s that’s been mentioned so I’d like to hear from anyone who has. For me we need to have in order of priority 1/Siem De Jong 2/ Remy 3/ CB who is quick.

    well torq ,never have i slated our squad and you may have a point ,but what if and it looks likely that the injuries will occur again regularly and the squad being as thin in places we will suffer big time and then you may say thats the fault of the negative vibe up here i can assure you that you and i will beg to differ but if im wrong i will be man enough to to admit it but im toon thru and thru and seen it all before i cant see my opinions being unfounded

    @32 jt

    i’m thinking thats unfair even for the agro they are causing atm !

    i’m pretty sure almost all fans we have would not call the quality of player we have since ashley came in as we got some players we should not have got in cabaye/tiote/arfa/sissoko ect ect ect to the point of players like bigi/anita/hairdryer/marv considered backup players ! so i’m pretty sure our overall squad has got better.

    i understand in seeing red as i have been doing it pretty much since jk got in 🙁 and with the fact everyone else inc teams below us are snapping up quality which is pulling us back and i personaly am getting annoyed that we need a few positions filled in order to improve ourselves to make a huge difference with just 2-3 players of quality but it aint happening atm 🙁
