Newcastle In Talks To Sign Young Goalkeeper

9:33 pm, Thursday, July 11th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 181 Comments

Sky Sports is reporting that Newcastle are in talks with PSV over the transfer of their 22 year-old 6’3″ Dutch U21 goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet, who we are interested in bringing to Tyneside.

Jeroen Zoet 99

Jeroen Zoet – 22 year-old Dutch goalkeeper

The news is that Newcastle want to bring in a young goalkeeper to replace Steve Harper, and challenge Tim Krul and Rob Elliot for the number one position on Tyneside, and the fee is thought to be around £2M.

On transfermarkt.com he is listed as being worth €2M, which is around £1.7M, and that’s the bid that was reported to be turned down a couple of days ago by PSV, if reports are to be believed.

Jeroen has spent the last two seasons out on loan at RKC Waalwijk, and he has looked a good young goalkeeper, and if the fee is right Jeroen could fill the hole left by veteran Steve Harper, and he will only improve as he acquires more experience.

There had been some news that Zoet was coming in because Krul was moving to Arsenal, but that Arsenal deal for Krul is probably not true, and the latest we saw was that Arsene Wenger would bid £7M for the Dutch International.

tim krul yes!

Tim Krul – Newcastle number one goalkeeper

Tim is worth a lot more money than £7M, and Mike Ashley would want at least twice that amount to allow the 25 year-old to leave Tyneside.

And of course Tim is very happy on Tyneside, where he’s been since 2005, when Graham Souness brought him in (or was it Joe Kinnear?), and he’s progressed through the ranks to become the number one goalkeeper for the last two seasons.

We think Zoet would be a good signing for Newcastle, and then we’d have very capable goalkeepers at the club.

Comments welcome.

Proof that our youth system can work.

Dutch = Krul the conquerors mate (by geographic location) so therefore a worthy number2 IMO

I only hope this is a replacement for Harper and not because the fat controller and the gobshite JFK are debating cashing in on Krul!!!

It’s just very very odd that we have talked about needing a replacement for Carroll, and then Ba, and pacey wingers, attacking players, coupled with an additional CB – so why on earth would our first real acquisition be a young GK to warm the bench and pick up £15-25K each week for potentially/obviously doing nothing to push players or make a difference?!

  • 4 John Tudor // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:41 PM

what is, krul or bringing in a kid

  • 5 ENNYOUEFFSEE // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:43 PM

What about Foster. Came through the youth system and now plays in the champions league.

  • 6 TorqToon // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:43 PM

Tom – In 2-3yrs time, Zoet’s valuation will sky rocket!

The right time to buy mate!

  • 7 FatmanJoe // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:46 PM

He seems to have a good reputation and there’s nothing wrong in buying talented young players if they’re going to be utilized. But I really think we should be focusing all our attention in bringing in 2 very decent proven attacking players.

  • 8 Versace101 // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:46 PM

will be an awesome buy!! get it done ASH!! and sign sum fuckin strikers! u tight fat git!!

  • 9 ENNYOUEFFSEE // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:48 PM

Torq 2-3 years time his valuation will sky rocket if he gets playing time. The only way that will happen if Krul gets injured god forbid

  • 10 stuart no9 // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:49 PM

if this young lad comes in , krul will be sold . ash would not pay 2M for an understudy keeper. he struggles to pay 2M for a CF.

  • 11 Versace101 // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:49 PM

get him in!!! looks better hislop and srnicek combined!! Mike ashley buy sum Friggin Strikers!!! im getting restless! i beg u ill even massage your feet and run u a bubble bath!! pleaseeeeee!!

  • 12 TorqToon // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:49 PM

  • 13 SeanNufc87 // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:50 PM

    Tudor

Im assuming you are taking to me? If so then yes krul, came through the ranks to be one of if not the best current prem keeper… maybe llroris.

  • 14 ENNYOUEFFSEE // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:51 PM

Torq what about Rob Elliot. Surely he is our no.2

  • 15 Toon_Tom // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:52 PM

Torq- I trust your judgment :-)

  • 16 bills-son // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:53 PM

    Stuart @ 9

Ashley didnt struggle to bid £9M for Cisse or outbid other clubs to sign Ba.

Another post that is pure fiction.

  • 17 Sazzer // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:53 PM

He might come learn from Krul for a year and then he’s prepared to take over next year.

  • 18 SeanNufc87 // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:56 PM

I can’t be the only one who doesn’t rate Elliott? Not s bad shot stopper but none of our players should come with the tag ‘not a bad’ such and such

  • 19 Versace101 // Jul 11, 2013 at 9:57 PM

Lads i feel a striker is in the pipe line and will be delivered by 2mo!!! watch this space… Remy not Bent… and one more preferbally siem de jong… Adam Cambell is going to be phenomenal though… im getting wet just thinking about his rise to the stars!

  • 20 croftus5678 // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:00 PM

this lads going to be a holland international and must be close to krull’s quality ! i dont see a problem with this tbh as krull wasted too many ball’s last year kicking the ball into no mans land but is a brilliant keeper and def our 1st choice and elliott had good distribution but i doubt will ever be one of englands best keepers.

and the fact harper has left and he did play games for us last season means we may need a 3rd keeper if alnwick is not what we expect of him.

with krull and him trying to be main internation keepers it can only make them play better imo.

    @17 sean

    elliots not bad m8 :-)
never a world beater and decent for a backup but for nufc who have had the best keepers for a long tie now since shay we need a better backup and i do think this lad is good from all angles.

Wierd if it is true since used to be all about Eriksen to Liverpool then that became Eriksen to Dortmund then same story all over again with Mkhitarian except Dortmund never signed Eriksen.

  • 28 Versace101 // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:07 PM

he will only go to those benders if king luis leaves for madrid or north london… need to bid for SIEM… he is a true footballer who plays the right way! hes would fit in perfectly!

  • 29 scout // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:08 PM

Someone told me Elliott lived next door to Pards dunno if its true.
Anyone seen the video on YouTube, write in pardew tactical, it’s a black and white clip, almost choked to death laughing

I think if we lose de jong as well as pea this blogs gonna go into meltdown.
This is the man that everyone keeps talking abt And sees as a perfect foil for our link up play between midfield and attack

  • 31 Sazzer // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:09 PM

4.3 m £ price tag on Boudebouz. Why haven’t we sold Obertan and bought this guy already?

  • 32 SeanNufc87 // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:12 PM

I could live with not getting de jong, I just dont want anyone else in the league to have him, is that fair?

Id be happy with remy, bent, zoet a LW and a young RB shouldn’t cost much more than 18 total.

  • 33 ENNYOUEFFSEE // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Sazzer agreed even if we dont buy Boudebouz why havent we sold Obertan.

  • 34 AaranD // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

If he ends up anything like Krul, who still has his best years to come, surely worth snapping up. Top notch keepers are hard to come by.

Realistically get Remy, De Jong and a winger, my choice would be Nacer Chadli, signed and draft a couple of good prospects in and I think that would be a good summers work.

If we have that team and endure a normal amount of injuries then anything lower than 8th next season would be disappointing. The top 6 I think rights itself and looks so hard to break into. Our squad the 7th most expensive in the PL is £140m Liverpool in 6th are £245m!!

Its not just the money they can spend. When you look at the top 6 they all have at least 1 match winner who will win them games.

    City – Toure, Silva, Aguero
UTD – RVP, Rooney, Kagawa (will be amazing this season)
    Chelsea – Mata, Lamps, Hazard
    Spurs – Bale
Gunners – Hmmm They either all play really good or all crap!
    Liverpool – Suarez, Gerrard.

I think that’s the big difference between the top 6 and the rest having them match winners perform week in week out clocking them points. Far to many of our match winners perform outstanding two or three games a season and go missing the rest!!

  • 35 Versace101 // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:13 PM

siem de jong… would cost us 12-14 million.. max… and think hes better than PEA… the french league is not even close to ours.. he would be another Chaomakh im glad that didnt happen… we need someone strong and get the job done! no nonsense football.. flair isnt required… we have lots of that on show!

  • 36 croftus5678 // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:14 PM

have we had anything concrete on siem ? even pardew or anyone at the club mentioning anything about him ?

personaly i think this has just come from the fact we was after de-jong some seasons ago and are expecting us to be still after him if we ever was !

  • 37 Novocastrian66 // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:16 PM

Why do people think we’re in for DeJong. We a mile away from signing anyone.

  • 38 Sazzer // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:16 PM

There is also this going around rounds:
Liverpool have had a combine 32.5m bid accepted for duo Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld.

I couldn’t find the source references but yeah it’s about Liverpool.

  • 39 noladonna // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:17 PM

  • 40 Toon_Tom // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:18 PM

Sean @17 – stick any half decent GK in and he will become world class after a few games due to our tactical defence strategy – ie> bomb forward and leave open spaces for the opposition to attack ;-)

I think elliott is a decent no 2 but signing this guy would be good for squad depth. I have a feeling though if we sign him krul will be away. If we do sell him which i hope we dont should be at least 12-14 mill

  • 47 Toon_Tom // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Not many teams, world wide, hold 2 cracking GK’s on their books. It’s always 1 top keeper (depending on the team’s calibre) and 1 half decent replacement to fill in when required.

So, if this is simply a replacement for Harper, or even Elliott, then sign him up

  • 64 p // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:41 PM

we won’t sign de jong as he won’t be a bargain

we only sign perceived bargains remember?

Remy – possibility as both the QPR player want to get out of that relationship

Bent – not fashionable right now after not much footie last season, issues with maanger etc.

Zoet – cheap’ish, young, one for the future. Expected to appreciate in value

These are more what we are likely to sign: young’ns, players with a year left on their contract, perceived bargains

The irony in the posts that accuse John Tudor of being abusive to other posters when 99% of his posts are dry humour directed at Mike Ashleys insidious regime albeit without the correct use of grammar which in itself is part of the context of the post and from what I’ve read from his posts he only gets abusive after someone has been a dick after been put down from a witty repartee.Keep up the good work John Tudor.

  • 67 toonicle // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:45 PM

  • 68 Toon_Tom // Jul 11, 2013 at 10:46 PM

P – I know where you’re coming from , but players like Debuchy, Anita, Bigi, even Cisse won’t increase in value too much in their whole careers!

So I think MA, somewhere within, still craves to make rash decisions (gamble) on our team. You can interpret that as good or bad but most, if not all, true businessmen always look towards a gamble now and again for the potential pay-offs and bragging rights within the local cigar club ;-)

How about some quality through the door Percy???? We always are planning for years ahead. Somebody tell Percy we were 5th bottom last season and would have been relegated if we were not gifted two goals at QPR. Percy reckons we can keep our best players. They would be the same best players who came 5th bottom??? Somebody needs to have a word with Perce. Not looking good. Lining up a Villa has been and a person on bail for rape and it aint Titus. Can we have him please / up front with Cisse – using his skill, pace and power to destroy other defences ;-)

Or, my old Maths teacher, Mr Campbell could probably do the same damage ;-)

  • 95 Toon_Tom // Jul 11, 2013 at 11:15 PM

Cisse does not need a partner. He can rely on his football and positional sense, his ball control and physical presence, combined with his hold up play and blistering pace to tear all defences apart.

If Cisse had the chances we used to create for Andy Cole and Shearer, he’d bang loads in. Not the abysmal non attacking which Pardew forces.

But we sit back for huge chunks of the game and get nowhere near attacking effectively.

The coaches and management should be focused on that, the team basics, before singling out Cisse, who makes good runs At times.

Sometimes it’s taken the passer so long to wind up the lengthy pass that he wanders off. Shorter more intricate passes, and he wont be caught off as much.

Lauren – you’re absolutely right – I am guilty of mocking Cisse’s numerous offsides each game but it is down to poor distribution. Cabaye, IMO, is the only true visionary in our midfield. He is a different class. Best player ( now and potentially) that we have had in a decade.

I’m neither an Ashley fan nor a Pards one, when push comes to shove, but it wouldn’t surprise to see this side finish top 8 easy as is this season and top 6 with the addition of even only two top players in the right positions, and there is little real reason to think we aren’t really trying to get them. To be honest I’d be as surprised as disappointed if we don’t get them, given the way we’ve built this squad.

toon tom based on what mate?

  • 117 Mister Tuff // Jul 12, 2013 at 12:05 AM

manxpie -there are some good players in the squad -however I have observed as others have that we look as though several pieces of the jigsaw are not correct. Still think we need a couple of forwards/attacking midfielders who have the power/skill to break through defences. Currently Cisse /or the way he is played is absolutely no trouble to defenders — little nudge in the back and he loses possession – usually occurs just over the half way line. Winger -who can cross would be a good addition and another must for me is a commanding CB.
Then it’s down to Percy to get them playing -still have doubts as to whether Percy can/will change -but all will be revealed.
I hope we sign quality as opposed to has beens or el cheapo bargain basement players.

  • 118 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 12, 2013 at 12:06 AM

What I would give to be a fly on the wall in Lee Charnleys office.

Really, what are the strikers that are available at the moment apart from Remy and Bent?

Are there any decent ones that are available?

  • 119 manxpie // Jul 12, 2013 at 12:17 AM

aye tuff agree with that but i posted last night quotes from pardew saying how last season we held back to much and worried to much about wat the opposition were gonna do so that makes me think he’s certainly taken on board alot of the issues from last season but the ammount of times i’ve seen we’ve got the best squad we’ve had ever or in ages makes me laugh!
surely it should be based on results and how we play instead of names that are on fifa or fm lol

  • 120 Mister Tuff // Jul 12, 2013 at 12:27 AM

manxpie -and there lies the issues -Percy has acknowledged some problems -about holding back (or as I would say reverting to his defensive safe ground) -is he able to mould the team to attack – and if it is required in a game to swiftly change the style/tactics -in response to what the opposition are doing. Forgetting any input or further input from Looney Joe, Percy has got to produce the goods or he’s a gonner -we have ot have the extra strike force though or we will struggle again.

  • 121 jimmysmith // Jul 12, 2013 at 12:27 AM

The side finished 5th the season before last and did play well and made the quarters of the Europa last under duress. This side should be stronger as the 5 Frenchmen are now bedded in, and more so with a couple of gooduns in. I don’t see too much wrong with the quality of the key players we have. Management, coaching, rehab, ownership seem to be where problems might lie.

    Mister,

Pardew can set-up an attacking force, he has demonstrated it in the 4-3-3 we have seen and also the 4-2-3-1.

All decent attacking formations where the players just under performed. Apart from the 4-3-3. Injuries played a huge part in it also in the underperforming.

With two new strikers and a winger dare i say, I have no doubt he will be playing attacking football next season. And without a doubt two upfront.

People talk about his football he set us out to play last season.

With a fully fit squad and decent back up I believe we will go out to dominate games. Tactics, game plans all himge on what you have available. Last season we didn’t have these luxurys. Our better players missed half of last seasons games.

With the right amount of investment and quality brought in we are nailed on 6th-8th. Two strikers and a winger.

    My own view of course.

Is it not possible we had our plan A that was nearly a done deal until dortmund came in? Then we had to scramble our efforts to our plan B whom we are in the process of signing?

As for available strikers that we could possibly get id say:

    Remy
    Bent
    Gamiero
    Gomis
    Hernandez
    Luuk de jong
    Lukaku (loan)
Man city youngster iv forgotten the name of.

These are the strikers id say can improve our squad and could be persuaded to join.

  • 134 Mister Tuff // Jul 12, 2013 at 1:44 AM

Toon – couple of points from my observations.
jonas – extremely hard working player for the Toon – best player I have seen for shielding the ball and then drawing a foul – whilst we retain possession -any momentum stops automatically for the free kick and allows the opposition to re-group -thus quick break killed in its tracks. For defensive play he’s ok (protecting a 2 goal lead) but not for any offensive play. (as the team stands now)
Sissoko – needs to have the ball to facilitate his power and surging runs going forward. Having him chasing down the opposition from one side of the pitch to the other is a misuse of what he does best. We are nearly there but need those additional quality signings for a good season.

  • 135 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 12, 2013 at 1:49 AM

    Sean,

Didn’t Gameiro decline us to stay with PSG? I could be wrong.

Gomis, im not sure he would work with Cisse. Sure we have made a bid and been rejected also? Unless it was speculation.

I don’t think we have any chance of Lukaku seeing as we finished 5th and beat Chelsea and finished above the season before last.

The Hernandez mention is interesting. I think he would be mint with Cisse but it is highly unlikely.

Luk de jong is an attacking mid (who) can play upfront. We have too many attacking mids at the club already unless there is a sale. Can’t see it being a priority.

Guidetti is up for debate, but untested really in this league.

I really think the quality is dwindling.

  • 136 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 12, 2013 at 2:08 AM

    Mister,

    Jonas.

Who do we have though to replace him with. No one of that sort of workrate and experience in this league. Through tough times with injuries where experience is valuable we had Ferguson and Marveux. Which were both hit and miss when available for that left wing slot.

    We need a winger.

He is getting on. I’ll personally miss him if he goes. What a heart the lad has and workrate. Talent limited also (under instructions maybe).

    Sissoko.

Perfect plan. His pace surprised everyone in the league. He got goals. A move which kept us in the league with his goals and bursting runs. It paid off then died off because teams begun to realise his presence. Next season he won’t play that role. Pardew would be a fool to do it and you don’t get to be a Premier League Manager by being a fool.

With the right players at his disposal I think we will comfortably finish 6th-8th so long as the quality is brought in. 2 strikers one winger.

  • 137 Uncertain Toon // Jul 12, 2013 at 2:34 AM

    Prodigy,

Aye Jonas has been a great servant. Can’t knock his work rate and commitment. I remember the Chelsea game when he scored that header, I was watching the cross go over and noticed he was in the 6yard box. WTF was he doin there! Tis just a shame he has never delivered from out wide himself. Still think he’ll get game time next season though.
Possibly bring him in for the games we know are goin to be a very physical midfield tussle.
Dries Mertens was the player for me mate, would’ve been perfect for our winger issue. I’ll be keeping an eye on Napoli, see if he performs over there.
Can this De Jong character play out there? I’m not sure, is he not more of an attacking mid through middle. Hope we get him anyway, hope we get someone!!!!

  • 138 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 12, 2013 at 3:02 AM

    Uncertain,

Jonas goal against Chelsea was telling, his emotions afterwards all suggested he was being held back but I could be wrong. Anyway, he was surely deployed to some defensive duties which we don’t really appreciate as Geordies. Hence the stick he got. Not that im defending him, his stats speak for themselves, but if that’s what is wanting of him it would be a whole lot of different stats. Maybe he has done a great job?

On transfers, we still await eh mate. Nee good.

It’s all suggesting a lack of planning, not good man.

Lets hope there ganning somewhere with it.

….Luk de jong is an attacking mid (who) can play upfront. We have too many attacking mids at the club already unless there is a sale.
    ———————————–
I think you mean Siem de Jong, not Luk.

Personally I think SDJ would be a great acquisition – I don’t agree that we’ve got too many attacking mids at the club. We do have plenty of players who CAN play in that position, but for most of them it isn’t their main/best position. For example, I see Anita and Tiote as mainly DMs who can also play CM and I see Cabaye and Sissoko as mainly CMs who can also play DM or AM. I can’t think of a single top player in our squad who is PRIMARILY an attacking midfielder, so to bring in a quality player like Siem de Jong, who can also play as a second striker, would be a smart move IMO.

  • 140 RonVanDam // Jul 12, 2013 at 5:59 AM

As for Jona’s i wouldn’t play him in every game the way Pardew does. He’s more of a defensive player, in a game where we are more on the back foot or 1 man down then i’d play Jonas or in a 4-5-1 formation.
Jona’s is a type of player that adsorbs pressure so it would be pointless to deploy him in a attacking game. Was good to see him show some fire in the last 5-6 games of of last season

  • 141 Slank // Jul 12, 2013 at 7:12 AM

    Toon @ 134

Jonas has admitted in an interview recently that age is catching up with him and he was realistic in saying that he can’t keep up his work rate for a full 90 minutes. Yes, I think a young and industrious winger is required.

I’ll be surprised if Sissoko is not played through the middle alongside Cabaye. He is the nearest I have seen to Patrick Vieira.

I too believe that we will finish between 6th and 8th.

Whilst many moan about our lack of activity in the current transfer market, IMHO it is better to bring in a small few than a bus load, like the great unwashed is now doing and what QPR did this time last year. All our Winter buys will now be fully acclimatised to the premiership, the club, the team, living in the North East, having a greater range of the English language and have had a preseason to prepare alongside more established players who are no longer injured. I have high hopes for this season, if we can get a winger and two strikers.

  • 142 Jail for Ashley // Jul 12, 2013 at 7:25 AM

I would be a happy with a striker, a ten goal winger and a young RB who will keep Debuchy looking over his shoulder, I don’t know why people are wanting a CB Willo is adequate at fourth choice until Curtis Good or Streete come through.

  • 145 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 12, 2013 at 7:35 AM

    Jail,
I’d agree with that. Don’t think Tav is good enough to fill in. although think Pards mentioned Mbiwa may be used there as he is naturally more right sided than left.

I think maybe 2 strikers, one Shola replacement, and one Ba replacement. Gouffran has replaced Lovenkrands/Best.

I can see why people might want a centre back, but it would be second last on the priority list. I don’t understand why we are after a keeper, particularly a young one. We have 2 England youth internationals coming through. I see people above mentioning he will be worth loads more in the future if he plays, but so will Alnwick/Woodman. (We also just extended Mitchell’s contract).

If we want to loan Alnwick out, then maybe bring in an experienced keeper who is happy playing back up. Given on a short term deal? I think he would prefer to be back up here then at Villa. Alternatively, if something happens (injuries/suspensions), have an agreement to recall Alnwick, or bring in an emergency keeper loan.

  • 146 Slank // Jul 12, 2013 at 7:35 AM

    Jail,

I agree that Willo is good enough but only as you say fourth in line. He seems happy enough to fill that role.

And yes we definitely need a striker and a winger.

Do you think Tavernier is good enough as an understudy? I suppose a fit Raylor could give Debuchy a run for his money.

I noticed that quote, but not sure what he means. We now have three staff that are more qualified than any others at the club, having passed their elite coaching course with UEFA, they spent time at Ajax, PSG and other clubs as well as working with elite sports fitness and medical professionals, so maybe he means them. If that is the case, then it is time we promoted them from Foundation manager, U16′s coach, and an youth educator.

  • 149 Ian Toon // Jul 12, 2013 at 7:41 AM

Slack- you mean like the bus load we bought in January that many thought would immediately flick a switch in our fortunes. We need 2-3 offensive players to supplement and achieve a 6-8 finish along with a good run in one of the cups. It would be ideal if it was sooner rather than later to get the maximum from pre season.

  • 150 Slank // Jul 12, 2013 at 7:44 AM

Our defensive record is shocking – even with Collo in the team – and one of the reasons is we have no real height, pace and power in CD. Look at ManU with Ferdinand and Vidic, Chelsea with Terry, Luiz and Ivanovic City with Kompany and Lescott – our CD’s are powder puff compared to these guys plus we have Santon and Debuchy who for all their attacking strengths are 4/10 defenders at best.

I keep saying, we have some very good players but a squad that is seriously lacking the right type of players in more than one area.

If you need to use a sub keeper you want them to be able to step straight in, and that is probably easier with experience, so a keeper nearing the end is better for now, and allows space for Alnwick and Woodman to develop.

    Ian Toon,
Probably a clever move if that was the case but Shay Given wanted out pal and it had nothing go do with forward thinking as didn’t the sale of England international James Milner who sold for a bloody fortune not long after he left us.

    JT,
We may have had one falling out in the past, but don’t let any of the people who slate your posts drive you away. You are just as entitled to your opinion, and while I don’t agree all the time, I enjoy reading none the less, as it is only with listening to and understanding other views that you can improve your own knowledge and viewpoint.

Oooooooooh………Soreeeee!!!!!! Although I fail to see how you can categorically say he was the better keeper and its not a question of sentiment but unfulfilled potential.

Not sure we will win any of the televised sky fixtures going off last years form.

People often say we need this and that player replaced which is true. We desperately need a very good striker.
But our squad needs to take a good look at them selves, some were poor, unfit and didn’t simply try hard enough last season

Further thoughts on Llambias fall out. Clearly spending has to be sustainable if we are to seriously compete with the top sides and Llambias missed out on a key transfer cycle last summer. His fiddling of the timing of the cycle helped the financial position for accounting purposes but let down Manager and players .
When the dramatic fall in motivation of players came from an apparent lack of ambition , in no small measure it could be related to the sparse Summer transfer activity. Ashley did not immediately grasp the significance but now feels better attuned with Kinnear on board.

As well as the direct benefits of phased spending it is just as important to work out whether the money was spent efficiently and
Llambias purchase of Anita was seen as one covering many. Forget the quantity look at the quality. He argued that the extra benefits would not be proportionate to the extra spending. The test would always be in the outcome. With a third more games it was absurd
    proposition.

I suspect that the final straw was the inactivity post loss of Remy current benefits were being bought by mortgaging the future loss of tv money. The comparative benefits meant Llambias had lost the plot
Ashley had to get involved. Pardew doubtless made the same points.

    Ian Toon @143.

New knowledge as Pardew described it, might just refer to that brought back by a couple of younger coaches who visited and talked to big-name European coaches as part of their EUFA elite coaching courses?

If I remember, that was reported in the Evening Chronicle a couple of weeks ago. I may be wrong but…..
