Shola Ameobi was not used much at all this year by Alan Pardew, even though he was fit and ready to play and we were short of striker after Demba Ba left, but when Shola did finally make a substitute appearance at West Brom, he injured himself with almost his first kick of the game, and that just about sums up Shola’s frustrating time with injures, in his thirteen years as a first team player at Newcastle.,
Shola Ameobi – future doesn’t look bright on Tyneside
We didn’t see Shola again last season, and although he played 35 times in all competitions with four goals, he didn’t play much t at all his year, and most of his appearances were as a second half sub.
And there were rumors that Shola may try to leave his home town club this summer, to get first team football elsewhere, and that could still happen before September rolls around.
But with one year left on his contract he becomes a free agent next summer, and he could get himself fixed up for a couple of seasons at another club – if he wants to do that.
Ameobi was withdrawn from Nigeria’s African Cup of Nations squad in January by Alan Pardew, because we were so short of strikers after Demba Ba was sold, but recently he has made himself available to the Nigerian side again.
Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi had this to say to the BBC.
“He’s been dealing with this for a while and I’m happy it (the alleged clause in his contract) has been removed,” “Just as we were giving up on him, he called to give us the good news.”
“I’ve always admired Ameobi’s wealth of experience and I respect his personality – for him to make himself available is fantastic,” “I would love to have all my strikers available and Ameobi, Emmanuel Emenike, Brown Ideye and Victor Anichebe are all fantastic players.”
“When we start selecting the squad to face Malawi (in September’s World Cup qualifier), to have someone like Ameobi available is excellent for us.”
Brown Ideye is a player we have been linked with this summer, and the 24 year-old plays at Dynamo Kiev, and he also wants to join Newcastle.
The fact that Pardew has allowed Ameobi to play International football, means that he is not high in the pecking order of strikers at the club.
And if we can get a couple of strikers in this summer, he could behind those two and also Papiss Cisse, Yoan Gouffran and even 18 year-old Adam Campbell, who will be a fully fledged member of the first team squad next season, and will get a lot more games than the five appearances he made last season.
Shola’s played 368 times for Newcastle with 76 goals, since Bobby Robson give him his debt back in September 2000, in a home game against Chelsea.
We think the future doesn’t look too bright for Shola Ameobi at Newcastle – what do you think?

‘I’m just getting sick of our increasingly lowering ambitions ‘
Do you mean in league position?
Many fans, myself included, believe we will end up around 8th in the league.
The top four (ManU, ManCity, Chelsea and Arsenal) would appear preordained for the top table but will the change of manager in three of those clubs affect their league position?
The next three are likely to be Spurs, Liverpool and Everton although I think the latter might struggle with their new manager.

The lad is quality, any player is a risk coming to a new league but I reckon he’d be a quality investment, young hungry European experience, good player all round

Comment #48kets/tads Thanks for that excellent news, exactly what i wanted to hear because he was my choice to replace Collo who IMO will be replaced in either of the next 2 windows which will then give us plenty of pace at the back which we badly need to allow us to press further up the pitch.

Comment #53I would love Pardew to play three CBs – Saylor, Colo and MYM (only really have Willo for competition !?!) – with Tiote (Sissoko) just in front as protection and to break up attacks – then with proper wing/backs in Debuchy (Santon) and Haidara (Gouffran – can he defend?, I’m loath to include Jonas as competition, as I think his attacking/crossing is behind him) – a couple of AMs Cabaye, Marv – and a couple of CFs Cisse, HBA (Campbell) – we could do with more CBs, but are desperate for CFs who can compliment Cisse and provide something ‘else’. Bent might be that something, but is likely just cover. We really needed to get Bony, he is going to be brilliant next season. I would suggest a player like Nils Petersen from Werder Bremen or Pierre-Michel Lasogga from Herta (though they aren’t French), or Wissam Ben Yedder from Toulouse, younger and cheaper (under 5M) and a lot better value.
