Can Kinnear Get A Striker And Defender In Soon?

11:51 pm, Sunday, July 14th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 114 Comments

Joe Kinnear has not made a good start to his job as Director of Football at Newcastle, and there’s a few reasons for that – one is his comments to the press have been a disaster, an absolute disaster, and Joe still hasn’t managed to get anybody through the door at Newcastle yet – which is his major job function.

darren bent at Villa

Darren Bent – Newcastle to bid £5M?

But there was news on Sunday that we have made Darren Bent out priority target, at least for next week, and that Joe Kinnear will discuss the transfer situation with Alan Pardew tomorrow, and then presumably lodge some bids.

We expect Kinnear and Pardew have already talked some last week or over the weekend, so we hope bid(s) can be lodged tomorrow.

Aston Vila officially want £8M for Bent, but news tonight that Newcastle are confident they can get that price down to £5M or less, so for 10M Newcastle could have an experienced striker and a decent center-back added tho the squad.

And there was news today that we are after Rolando, the 27 year-old Porto and Portuguese International, who is supposed to be available for £5M, with Everton also said to be interested.

If Joe Kinnear can bring in those two players in the coming week, then we need just one more striker this summer, and could potentially be one of two French Internationals – Loic Remy from QPR or Bafetimbi Gomis of Lyon, who has just one year left on his contract at the French club.

Time is passing by, and Newcastle and Joe Kinnear need to show Newcastle fans that they can get the job done in the transfer market – we certainly did that in January, before Joe came back to Newcastle in his new role.

And the sooner the new players are on Tyneside, the sooner they will be fully integrated into the Newcastle squad.

Comments welcome.

Can Kinnear Get A Striker And Defender In Soon?
    Not without help. .

  • 3 djm... // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:00 AM

Hazzy, do you know what the hold up is with us actually making bids for players. It just seems that we are always in talks, but surely all that’s needed to be done is ‘how much do you want’ then we negotiate from there. Like if your buying a car or a house, you generally know how flexible the seller is going to be just from the first conversation.

  • 4 HAZZY1 // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:04 AM

djm as far as im aware the hold up is the agents ie fees or wanting to wait for a bigger move for there clients also we r hard when paying the fee the club wants and r always wanting them for less we have money to spend but we will only spend what we feel is the right price thats y we r not closer to signing anyone I was told De Jong was almost done but that was 2-3 weeks ago so like I said I feel the agents r holding everything up or MA not paying up.

  • 5 jimmysmith // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:05 AM

Bent is worth a punt at 5 mill. Players fall out with clubs from time to time, doesn’t make them poor players. Was very good at Sunderland and was in the mix at Tottenham when they had real options up front, but you do get the feeling he might be the only attacker in, which would simply be the slap in the face that would shatter the last of my illusions.

  • 6 djm... // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:07 AM

Ahh that does kind of make sense. Suppose there are a few more parties to keep happy with these deals too. But I would have thought they would have an idea of how flexible the other clubs where willing to be by now.

  • 7 lesh // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:08 AM

Of course Joe still hasn’t managed to get anybody through the door at Newcastle yet and there is a good reason for that – he’s hasn’t put a full week in since he announced himself some four weeks ago!

Hazzy, we haven’t bid for De Jong yet but we’ve been in talks for a few weeks. Who with? What the hell is there to talk about? The fiasco that is Newcastle United?

Is it any wonder we get turned over by other clubs who get our supposed targets signed up while we we’re talking.

  • 8 HAZZY1 // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:14 AM

lesh Like I just said I was told we were in talks with De Jong his agent and Ajax but ive not heard anything else maybe they want to much agent fees or wages or maybe ajax want alot more than the 10m that has been banded about on here im not sure I only know what I hear or been told then I let everyone know.

  • 9 HAZZY1 // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:19 AM

Soz peps go to go again my son isn’t well today ill check back with u all as soon as I hear anything about De Jong or other targets nite all.

  • 10 lesh // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:20 AM

Thanks for coming back Hazzy. There was no need as you’d answered my question (@4), before I’d asked it!

Thanks again and as you say, you’re only passing on what little bits you hear.

  • 11 Mister Tuff // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:20 AM

I think everything has just been put on hold until Looney Joe gets back from his holidays -so if there are any signings he will get the credit and then he will be a hero.
Somebody mentioned previously -do not know the origins that Obertan may not be leaving. If that is true I’m shocked. he is useless.
Also Percy stating that the defence was ok -when most observers know it is not – gives me the shudders. The other item I could not really understand was Percy suggesting that it was up to Sissoko where he should play – but that in midfield it would be at the expense of Cabaye or Mr T..
We need 2 quality strikers -winger and a commanding CB or do not expect a lot this coming season.

Let me guess-your dogs’ hairdresser is the cousin of Kinnears parrot and thats where you get your inside info right?

Forgive my scepticism but ITKs should really get a life!

Whats the point? Obviously you’re not an ITK though are you so you’ll agree whole-heartedly of course. ;)

  • 13 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:22 AM

    Personally,

I think it’s a disgrace if we only bring in Bent as a forward this window. At best, this lad should of been coming in to play as a 3rd striker in replace of Shola. He is good enough for competition to our major front two strikers.

If Joe dosn’t show Shola the door, then that is a failure through my eyes straight away in his job role.

Part and parcel of his job role is to shift out the dead wood, and if Shola isn’t dead wood, then I don’t know what is.

Can someone please explain to me why we need a defender in?

At the moment we have 4 centre backs:

    Coloccini, Mbiwa, Taylor, Williamson.

Right back – Debuchy – Cover – Anita.

    Leftback – Santon – Cover – Haidara.

I can see only a young right back needed for cover if you did not want to use Anita, but it is hardly a priority right now?

With the amount of CM’s at the club, I would not be bothered about Anita filling in at right back to give one of are other CM’s a game until the return of Debuchy.

    Just my two cents?

  • 16 Spuggy // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:28 AM

We need a commanding CB because when colo is injured the calm control at the back and therefore in midfield goes to shits.

  • 17 potski // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:29 AM

    Jimmy

Why is it “astonishing” to take a holiday at this time of the year? Millions do it, mainly for the weather or because of school holidays.

Joe, we are told, had the holiday pre-planned, and let’s imagine for a minute that perhaps, just perhaps, there was a very good reason why he couldn’t cancel it and take it some other time?

Weather? Nice in Italy now, I’m there now:). But I guess he could afford to cancel and take the missus to somewhere more exotic once the window closes.

Schools? He’s 66, surely he doesn’t have kids still at school?

No, his only child was 40 when he died of cancer two years ago.

But he left two grandchildren under ten, who live with their mother in USA. Do you think it is possible, strange I know, that the man wanted to spend some time with his grandchildren while they are off school? And just possible that his new employer said yes?

OMG!! The man has a family and a life away from football, how dare he. What if there had been some development with one of our transfer targets? Surely, the don’t have mobile phones and Tinternet in Italy, do they?

  • 18 stuart no9 // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:35 AM

potski — he shouldnt have taken the job if he wasnt going to be here to do it. Do managers go on holiday on the first day of the season ? the answer is no .

  • 19 potski // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:44 AM

Going to be “here”? One of the previous posters mentioned a player at Napoli. How do you know Joe was not at that match, and tell me please in our modern world where you would go on holiday that you can’t use a phone, email or Skype? Italy was mentioned in lots of sources as the destination for this mysterious holiday, not trekking in the Himalayas.

  • 20 Spuggy // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:44 AM

Darren bent does not inspire me one bit – if that is the best we can do it is a downgrade from cisse. As a replacement for shola yes, as our first choice striker to replace Ba no.

  • 21 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:47 AM

    Spuggy,

    Between Colo, Taylor, Williamson.

They kept 15 clean sheets the season we finished 5th. And then we have added Mbiwa and his leadership qualities since then. Very unlikely we will add a centre back until we sell or lose one of them.

I agree when Colo is out the side we are not as settled, but Mbiwa is here to rectify that problem now.

    Potski,

This is a club that has just been thrown into the air, that’s in turmoil, in the need for signings that have not came. Joe is the man to do that, that’s his job and will be being paid an awful lot of money to do that.

Players are being signed by clubs and the longer the window is open the quality drivels away.

If it was an emergency then fair enough, get yourself away Joe, see to your business. But, I havn’t heard anything such.

He can go on holiday whenever he likes, visit grandkids galore. But for this important time period, his most important time period in this particular job role, he should be putting the graft in and getting this football club ready for next season. That is a given.

It really is as simple as that.

Everyone from office workers to Executives don’t have such luxurys year after. They get on with their jobs that they are paid to do.

It’s a pi55 take. No doubt about that.

  • 22 stuart no9 // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:57 AM

potski- by jfk s actions , tells me he is not one bit bothered about NUFC , but only in it for the money. It has been mentioned he got the job because he was jobless and potless . he is what he is -a waster . in time , you will agree with most of us , it just takes some people a little bit longer than others before it gradually sinks in !

  • 23 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 15, 2013 at 1:02 AM

The situation with Joe Kinnear and this summer break typifies everything wrong with NUFC under this regime.

    Poor planning.

  • 24 89Norcal // Jul 15, 2013 at 1:06 AM

Fun (predictable) fact: we are now the only remaining EPL club to not have signed a player this summer; if anyone is still unaware.

  • 25 potski // Jul 15, 2013 at 1:10 AM

What world do you live in? Everyone takes holidays now. And while I don’t know that he is with his grandchildren, it certainly seems a more than plausible explanation.

I have employed new people and if they have holidays already arranged within the first few months I would always honour them, even if I’m entitled to say no.

When MA offered him the job. “But Mike the grand kids are coming over in a few weeks, I was planning to take them away for a week.”. “Don’t worry about it Joe. Alan will be back from his holidays then, and him and Graham can keep an eye on things. If anything happens they’ll ring you straightaway.”. “Thanks, Mike. I really appreciate it. Me and the missus only get to see them a couple of times a year.”

You really would need to clearly explain what “work” he does that requires his physical presence in the UK on every single day of the window to justify all if the abuse he has received over the last week.

  • 26 lesh // Jul 15, 2013 at 1:12 AM

In my experience, there is an expectation of directors and that is that they are commuted to the business 24/7.

As far as we know, he hasn’t put a full week in yet and that’s hardly sending out the right message – particularly at this stage of his employment with the club

  • 27 lesh // Jul 15, 2013 at 1:23 AM

potski…. Yup most folk do take holidays in summer but directors should be around when they’re needed.

Yes we know that communication’s not a problem these days but for hell’s sake, if there’s urgent business to be done, it needs to be done before opportunities disappear!

Maybe we should give him the benefit of the doubt but I’d have thought that he’d be trying to establish some credibility especially after his clumsy media performances.

Bur, maybe that’s never occured to him.

  • 28 potski // Jul 15, 2013 at 1:30 AM

But you don’t know that he hasn’t been in contact with agents, managers, players etc throughout his “holiday”. Though I doubt the nature of his “work” requires constant action. If they submitted a bid for Bent then they are waiting for Villa to get back to them whether they are willing to accept it, and allow them to start negotiations with the player.

Whether you like it or not, most of the window is a waiting game. Only on deadline day is there frantic action.

And in Bent’s case I can easily see it going to the last day. Only an injury to Cisse or another club sniffing around Bent might cause us to up the offer. Villa will cave in on deadline day if Lambert is serious about offloading him.

JFK will be lucky if he finds his own way back to Newcastle never ming bring any players in

  • 32 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 15, 2013 at 2:12 AM

    Potski,

Joe Kinnear oversee’s transfers coming into the club and going out of the club. The lack of action over the past week and from the start since he was appointed has been shocking. All suggesting zero planning.

He is Mike Ashleys eyes and ears on the training ground. The fact he has been given an office at the training ground backs up this fact. He has done nothing in regards to this aspect either.

How can he shift out the deadwood if he is know where to be seen or looking at the squad?

Im not saying people should not enjoy a break away in the summer. Im saying for the state of this club through recent events, and the importance of him having a hands on approach which is his job role, he shouldn’t be away right now.

His job should be his priority, especially given the short window which he has to operate in. Every waiting second is a second that could of been spent planning for the new season, chasing up targets, removing players he feels is not good enough.

Now if we were signing players still with him being away, and our targets were through the door, then I could understand your reasoning.

The facts are though as it seems, no business has been done at all, no bids have been offered and we are waiting on him coming back. Which is slowing the whole process once more on top of his already mental appointment that seen a set-up manage to get five players in within days in January.

It shows a lack of care and consideration from Mike Ashley and Joe Kinnear and it’s unfair to everyone connected to the club. Year after year we see poor planning without learning from their mistakes.

Toon fans are tired of being taking for granted.

This scenario typifies that problem once more.

Got to dash, work to do, catch ya soon.

  • 37 Santon03 // Jul 15, 2013 at 5:42 AM

    hi guys

I don’t think Kinnear is on holiday, he had enough holidays imo.
Why are we so stuck with Remy? I still think that we will sign 2 or 3 unknown strikers, definitely not the ones that we or the media have mentioned before.
Everything is done secretly right now, better if less people know what we are doing. Probably those strikers are not playing in europe and waiting for the work permit, it would be silly if we announced it then failed on the work permit.

  • 41 cyprus // Jul 15, 2013 at 6:35 AM

    Ed,
Being an old timer I thought you’d appreciate the need for wingers, mate. They provide width, thus opening up tight defenses, they carry the ball and can play close or far (crossing) to the CFs.

We don’t really need any backs, despite our horrible defensive record, unless sub Good is no good.

  • 42 Santon03 // Jul 15, 2013 at 6:48 AM

If pardew has evolved, he would probably try 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, that would mean we don’t need wingers. Wide players will be WB and they don’t have to hurry back into defensive position.
    —————————-Krul————————
    ————-Saylor——Colo——-MYM———-
    Debu———Cabaye——–Tiote———Santon
    —————————-HBA————————-
    ——————Cisse————-Gouff————-

Cabaye as deep playmaker like Pirlo. This way wide players are more multitasking, defensive and attacking rather than pure wingers. HBA as wingers can’t really help defense, he is not good in defending, if we have 2 that will be more problem.

  • 43 jimmysmith // Jul 15, 2013 at 6:50 AM

ermm….because we desperately need two to three top signings, it`s his job to get em over the line, now`s very much the time to do it and he started about a week before he took off.

I`m assuming he has some involvement while away, someone else has essentially covered the role in his absence and he had the hols planned before the job. Even so, it is far from ideal and we are talking big money as well high hopes and expectations set against one mans holiday that unless there are extenuating and significant circumstances surely should have, could have, been re scheduled.

Get the job done and by all means take an extended vacation with a bonus Joe, you`d have earned it.

  • 44 SeanNufc87 // Jul 15, 2013 at 6:53 AM

    Santon

Its a good formation and wigan looked great at times playing it, our problem would be we dont have enough cover for the three cb.

It certainly would suit our squad with both our full backs being more attack minded players but the la k of cover is certainly a worry for it.

  • 45 Santon03 // Jul 15, 2013 at 6:56 AM

btw.. where did JK go to on holiday? probably just a cover, didn’t see any pictures of him on holiday if he is a hot topic for the media (in negative sense).

  • 46 Santon03 // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:01 AM

    Sean

We still have Willo, Dummet, and Streete. I read some news that Streete is training with 1st team now. We should give these 2 youngsters chance to play, they would probably perform better than new CB. They will work harder than for example Douglas and they will be happy being 5th or 6th choice CB.

  • 47 Santon03 // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:03 AM

well… unless all 3 CB injured at the same time then we will be in deep sh!t.

  • 48 jimmysmith // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:06 AM

Santon, thats a good side, with perhaps Guttierez and Haidarra understudying the wing back roles and we would perhaps need one more back up centre back, wing back and two strikers in two pull that off, but it does set up lovely.

  • 49 Ian Toon // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:07 AM

potski- The academy manager said in May that with the increased staffing levels and implementation of new initiatives, that category one status would be awarded.

The decision was to be communicated in June and a lack of any communication on the decision has created rumour.
The benefit of category 1 status is that it attracts young talent from far and wide. Currently 20 clubs have the status.

Ed- I would suggest that this might be a good subject to do an article on .

  • 50 nut meg // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:09 AM

    Cyprus @ 40
Pardew recently admitted that he had made mistakes with tactics & that he had paid too much attention to the opposition instead of focusing on what we should do. I’m reading that as a change in his plans for this coming season.I think & hope he’ll us pushing further up the pitch instead of defending the last 40 yards. To play a much more pressing game you need defenders with enough pace to get back into position to do their job. Collo isn’t getting any quicker & as much as I like & admire him he doe’s get caught short with a ball played over the top,Taylor/ Williamson exactly the same ….too slow.I also have my doubts about him being here next year so a new CB will need a bedding in period.Maybe a new CB along side Collo with Yanga at LB or play Collo in the DMF position & see how it works.Preseason games might give us a clue as to any changes in Pardews mindset. I live in hope !! I’ll leave the wingers for Ed to reply LOL……..sorry for the hi jack Ed

I don’t think defensive will be a problem with 3CB, 2DM, and 2WB even if we have Dummet or Streete as CB. Jonas will probably backup for Debuchy and Haidara for Santon. Definitely need striker(s), I’m not sure Campbell will be ready to take Cisse’s or Gouff’s role if one of them is injured. HBA has Marv as backup, DM got plenty backup.

    Ian,
We now have three very highly qualified coaches working in the academy, and hopefully that will bring an improvement in status.

One of the main benefits of being category 1 is the ease with which you can take the most promising players from lower category academies, as they want the best youngsters getting the best coaching.

On last night’s best NUFC of all time, it would appear the majority of posters on here are under 30. Some cracking players missed out from most lists, and some frankly absurd calls on some of them.

  • 60 doonundertoon // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:21 AM

    @santon03

if pardew has evolved, id hope and pray he didnt think 3-5-2 was the answer lol, its a horrible tactic, its why wigan would always get done on the counter every season for the last 3 years.. no matter how bad of a season we had last year and how soul destroying it was at times, wigan and the “3-5-2″ still had a worse one ;)

and i think the damage is already done unfortunately in regards to transfers, its always nice to try and get the bulk of your transfer business done before the first week of your pre-season to allow the new players to gel together, the longer the club leaves it, the worse its going to be, and coupled with the fact that the longer the fans wait, the expectations will rise, then the player that joins halfway through the pre season that isnt fully accustomed to the team or the style, get’s bigged up by the fans, but then will get hounded when he is not up to the pace by the media, and the fans will get on his back..

just a day in the life of newcastle united lol ;)

    Nutmeg,
I see your point and yes Colo/Tayl and Will are too slow. I don’t see Tayl and Will as in the starting 11, so that leaves only Colo, who handles it well due to his experience. That is, unless we play a very high line, which leaves us horribly exposed. Of course, Terry and Ferdinand have had similar problems with a high line.

Santon, I get the point of wing backs and it is effective when they overlap. I still think that the idea they can actually replace wingers is obsolete now.

  • 63 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:26 AM

    Santon,
I think Campbell would be able to step in and play in the Prem, but he isn’t better than Cisse or Goofy at the moment, so surely it would be best to loan him out and allow him to continue his development. I’d say the same for Streete, Mbabu, Alnwick, possibly Satka.

Dummet, Newton, Inman (if he signs an extension), Sammi, Tav and Vuckic should all be asked to prove their worth in training, and if they don’t then send them on loan before releasing next year. If they can’t cut it now, we can’t keep giving new contracts in the hope that 3/4 years down the line they finally make it. Personally, of that list, only Vuckic and Inman will play regularly in the top flight(or equivalent standard), whether that is for us, or someone else is still open to question.

Lil – I am under 30 but my grandfather/ Dad always claimed Brennan CB, Mitchell winger and Milburn should be in any best X1.
Growing up Shearer, Beardsley, Ferdinand , Lee, Centre Parting and
    Ginola were my favourites.

  • 67 cyprus // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:32 AM

    Btw,
I’m not against a high line, when you have the right players who can make it back with a fast winger on the counter. And we have that in Mbiwa.

I know that he was excellent at LB, because he’s an excellent player, but I think he’s best in the middle. We have Haidara to nail down LB and Santon, whose talent we cannot waste, should be moved up.

  • 68 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:32 AM

    Ian,
There hasn’t been any announcement yet. The3 are the Foundation manager, the U16′s coach (who I have stated for nearly a year is the best coach we have, Liam Bramley), and the youth educator (formerly coach for our U15′s). They are now amongst the best qualified coaches (on paper)in Europe. Begs the question why we have poorer coaches at the top level then bottom level. Also gives an indication of why at U16 level we have a glut of youth internationals, with the number steadily dropping when they move away from these coaches.

Another coach who passed with them is currently the manager for Guam, he wants a route back to England, Gary White he is called. I’d offer him a role in our coaching set up.

As for whether we will be upgraded, I have my doubts. I heard something from a friend who works with the juniors that some of the top staff at academy and club level believed the assessors had got it wrong, and we didn’t need to do much to improve. If that is the attitude, then I feel we may be disappointed again.

  • 69 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:36 AM

    Ian,
Yeah, they would all be in for me. Someone said Santon was the 2nd best left back we have ever had! I’d say he is probably the second best left back at the club right now! And yes, Milburn should be top of any strikers list, I noticed people with Bellamy and Tino in the top 5 but no Milburn/Mcdonald/Davies/Gallacher.

  • 70 Ian Toon // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:38 AM

One of my proudest possessions (or rather my mums ) is a photo of me as a kid in a toon shirt with Rob Lee and Barton up on the quayside after a victory. I sent it to Barton a while ago and he said he wished he had the same mane. What a team we had and what entertainment .
I thought it would go on and on with us winning Leagues and Cups.

  • 71 Ian Toon // Jul 15, 2013 at 7:43 AM

Lil- Santon just needs to think a bit more on the timing of his runs. He showed that he can defend, if you recall the Man Utd home game in the season before last, he was outstanding. He’s better in the air than we have seen. I am expecting big things with added competition.

I never thought this was going to be a great transfer winddow, but if this is going to be the window where Pardew gets his way and we don’t offload the deadwood and we end up signing Bent, Gomis and Rolando then I think I prefer last years transfer window!

  • 76 Santon03 // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:00 AM

If we play 4 at the back, I hope Santon will play as winger and Haidara as LB. Haidara more defensive minded than Santon who used to be RW and he will also provide better cover for Haidara defensively. When pardew moved Santon as RW against Wigan, he scored. his dribbling probably at the same level as HBA.

    Lilo,
As for Dummet and Streete, they would be best option for 5th and 6th choice for CB, I can’t imagine any new CB want to be 4th or 5th choice and we will have less games than last season. We are not one of the big clubs where they can afford to bench good CB and they will content being 4th choice CB. We are not big club, so new signing will ask for more regular starts, those players left the big teams to get regular starts not to be a bech warmer in small club and I don’t think Colo, Saylor, MYM will be happy to be 3rd or 4th choice behind new CB.

  • 77 Santon03 // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:04 AM

Like Sakho, he will leave PSG to smaller club to get regular starts not as bench warmer, because he is already a bench warmer at PSG.

  • 78 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:06 AM

    Jesper,
After looking through last nights stuff, I saw you mentioned Clayton.

Very good prospect, Liverpool, Man U and Man City are all said to be watching him closely. I would love us to bid for him and either loan him back to Crewe or post date the signing so he joins in 1or 2 years.

One of the best things about Crewe’s development and nurturing of talent is that the players seem to hold Dario Gradi and the rest of the staffs thoughts in the highest regard. I have seen numerous times that clubs have bid for Crewe players in the past but the players will generally agree with/accept Gradi’s decision if he feels they can benefit more from 1/2/3 more years with Crewe. If he feels it is the right time to leave then they always do so with his blessing.

  • 79 potski // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:06 AM

…and along with Arsenal and Swansea they are by far the most fun to watch the past few seasons!

We are down there with Stoke and QPR if you sak me :-( dreadful!

  • 81 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:11 AM

    Santon,
I agree, that no new signing will want to be 4th choice. To be honest, I think any new signing would move above Taylor. MYM and Colo will be starters(from current squad). While I would love an upgrade on both Taylor and Willo, I don’t see this as an essential. Dummet can stay this year and see if he is good enough to push for a place, I highly doubt he is.

Loan Streets/Satko/Good out all centre backs of promise. It is easy enough to have a recall option if we have need of them, or if they are performing at a level which would see them start.

  • 82 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:12 AM

Lilongwe…yeah I mentioned last night that I was very much impressed with how Crew nurtured young talent and I was very impressed with how Inman progressed :-)

Clayton was a player a saw a few times, but it was hard to tell how gbood he is. Some have been telling me he has a great future infront of him if he makes the right decissions!

  • 84 Cool Hand Luke // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:13 AM

Santo03, very good side you posted there, and kudos for not listing players that we dont actually have yet. On the Santon debate, i feel some fans are a little fickle. he was our best player in the 1st half of the season, i fell the amount of miles he put in burnt him out a little, not to mention the discouragement at being seemingly the only one wanting to get forward. He certainly can defend, Ronaldo commented on his abilities after having been put in Santons back pocket for the whole game when he was at Inter. He just needs a fresh season and the others in the team to perform around him to shine.

  • 85 nut meg // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:20 AM

    Cyprus @61
I think the slower players are always going to cause problems if playing a high line & Terry is one of the slower one’s now,Ferdi is slowing down but still quicker than Collo. So if we get a new CB to play a high line than he has got to be quick, the full backs are pacy so we should be ok.A solid defense is the foundation of all good sides but the toon fans want to see all out attack most if not all of the time.I know because i’m one of them.LOL Fingers crossed for the coming season eh.

Tbh, last season the midfield didn’t perform which put more pressure on the back 4. It’s different style with Inter under Mourinho, they played with 2CB adn 1 Sweeper, and their DM did what they were supposed to do. You are right about the others in the team to perform around him to shine, because he can’t do it alone.
I bet if Santon is on for sale, Mourinho will sign him.

  • 89 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:30 AM

    Potski,
The club has Academy facilities that they are (in their words) committed to maintaining the highest standards possible. It has been a while since I have been to the academy base, living abroad now, but they did take a lot of pride in the facilities offered. Whether they have been maintaining the latest technology, I am unaware, but part of the deal with Wonga is meant to be that Wonga invest heavily in the youth facilities and development.

In terms of medical, fitness and conditioning the academy has its own medical facilities and personnel, who also have very close links with both Universities in terms of the sports science research and development areas.

For me, the area that lets us down is the coaching. We seem to excel at getting the most out of our kids up until the professional development phase. This is the stage where Dave Watson (U18 coach), Beardsley, Donachie and Kevin Richardson (U17 coach) get involved.

I don’t rate Beardsley as a coach in the slightest. He had a natural gift and struggles to impress it and teach it to players. The other 3 are similar in approach to Carver/Stone/Pardew. Most of their knowledge comes from playing and working with managers who are very much old school. Lower down, Bramley, Winskill, Hutton are very much progressive and modern. These are the people who we should look to move up to more influential roles, or appoint similar people in place of the 4 above.

All this is largely futile though unless we play progressive football at first team level to offer a smoother transition going forward.

  • 90 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:37 AM

What I’d give for our club to appoint Dario Gradi DoF, Paul Clement (Ancelotti’s assistant at PSG), Gary White (Guam manager), move up Bramley and Winskill. I’d add Steve Round to that list, but getting him to come back here and leave Man U may be tricky! That is a group of technical coaches worthy of any country, and yet they are all English. What a step forward that would be. And more importantly for Ashley, none of that would cost the earth to achieve!

  • 91 Yohan Kebab // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:41 AM

we dont necessarily have to play with 5 at the back to deploy our attacking wingbacks, so long as we have two defensive mids to actually do their jobs and cover them when needed, aswell as the fullbacks being more intelligent with runs

  • 94 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:46 AM

    Kebab,
To be honest, to cover full backs you only need 1 DM if they know how to play the role. Both full backs shouldn’t be pushing on at the same time, the DM should just need to cover 1, sweeping from side to side as needed. For me, that is where Anita fits in. Has played all 3 positions to a decent level, so should be more than capable of reading play and moving across.

The big problem we have is teaching the 2 full backs when to go, and when not to.

Anyway, we still can get Honda if we want to.
Honda has reached agreement with AC Milan, but the move will be in January when he’s out of contractfor free. CSKA director said the ball is with Milan, they will accept any club who can match their asking price and Milan hasn’t been able to sell Robinho and they are planning to sell Boateng to get some cash in to buy players. So.. it’s not 100% Honda will move to Milan, because Honda is still under contract with CSKA.

not a rm as such but the midfield would set up something like

    tiote anita
    sissoko cabaye HBA

ideally this would be a fluid system with cabaye/anita/sissoko constantly interchanging and hba supporting the attackers

but again this could fall to pieces if there is the lack of movement that we suffered from last season

  • 100 lesh // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:53 AM

Hi Lil and sad to say, you may be right about the academy’s quality status.

And, there’s a strong possibility that the well-knoown ‘they’ll never fail us’ attitude may have prevailed. I and am sure you and many others have seen that before with nowt more than lip-service being given to quality.

Might that have been another factor in Llambias’s demise?

With quality, a business must take it seriously and practice the philosophy of continuous improvement.

Now, given recent events, has that been evident apart from the appointment of a football man in the form of Joe to oversee all matters football? Taking personalities out of it, I’d say yes (and put me tin hat on and keep me head down).

  • 101 beddersmag // Jul 15, 2013 at 8:57 AM

Im constantly seeing posts about colo being too slow on here. Ok so he might not be as quick as the fastest strikers such as long or suarez but who is? I have seen him live in foot races against some quick guys and he is by no means slow. It may give that impression as he is prone to the odd daft jump in, where he is left for dead as the striker takes yards our of him in an instant. Taylor is even more guilty of this but again flat out speed is not the issue imo as you can see when he bombs forward he has sufficient pace to do the job its more positional, first 5 yards in your head an all that. Has anyone seen the sprints in training who can offer an opinion? I would put money on them both being quicker than cabaye btw :-)

    Morning Lesh,
Yeah, I am under the impression Llambias was one involved in the decision that the assessors are wrong. I mean how can FA youth assessors possibly know better than a failed Casino manager…. Beardsley is another issue, as he is a massive fan of the Ashley blueprint, and is keen to keep onside with Ashley.

I’d agree, taking personalities out of it, then improvement would be likely. But these are all considerable personalities, in one way or another, that can’t be taken out.

    Nut meg,
He was at Palace when they were a top flight side in the 80′s (81/82) I think, but took over with them struggling and failed to save them from relegation. He left the following season once it was impossible to achieve promotion. He waited over a year before his next job at Crewe. He was linked with a role at the FA after Venables, and was interviewed for the Benfica job in the early 90′s i think.

    Kebab,
I’d have Anita, Sissoko and Cabaye as a midfield trio. It provies technical ability and a fluidity as all three can seamlessly fill in as a definsive or an attacking player. Save Tiote for the games where we will come heavily under pressure.

You know our defense and midfield really should be that much better this season after having the second half of last season to bed in. We really do have what could be an excellent core of players there. In attack we are light, but again on form, HBA and Cisse are arguably our best players, so really even someone of the calibre of Remy in and an only run of the mill season injury wise could see us challenge sixth.

A top striker who can work the flank and the middle is critical and to be honest if we had Ba back and willing to play that role I’d be full of hope and expectation. Thats not gonna happen but that calibre of player with that capacity is fundamentally what we need. Gouffran is a capable backup for me but on last seasons form not the answer, but he too may have benefitted greatly from the experience gained last season.

  • 113 pawl250 // Jul 15, 2013 at 9:23 AM

I think, and hope our current team is set out like this

    ———————- Krul ———————–
    Debuchy – Mbiwa — Coloccini – Santon
    ————– Tiote —— Cabaye ————
Ben Arfa ——- Sissoko ——– Gouffran
    ——————— Cisse ———————–

Thats probably our strongest starting 11, possibly Gouffran/Marveaux debate or if not on from Tiote/Anita.

We cleary need a striker like winger, Remy mold would be ideal. Left sided is possible.

We could also do with Sissoko moving alongside Cabaye for a central attacking midfielder, creative and good in the air, would be ideal as already stated thousands of times Siem De Jong.

That should be our priority leaving our team looking like this (assuming Gosling has left)

    Krul, Elliot, Alnwick

Debuchy, RTaylor, STaylor, Mbiwa, Williamson, Colo, Santon, Haidara, Tavernier
    (Ferguson, Street, Good on loan)

    Tiote, Sissoko, Cabaye, Anita, Jonas
    (Bigirmana, Abeid on loan)

Ben Arfa, Obertan, Remy, Marveaux, Gouffran De Jong, Vuckic, Amalfitano, (Gosling if stays)
    (Sammy on loan)

    Cisse, Shola, (De Jong/Remy cover)
    (Campbell on loan)

Of course likes of De Jong and Remy can cover strikers role but thats the basis of starting positions if we were to acquire those 2 additions, and no more leaving.

    Pretty strong team.
