Newcastle Surprise – After Portuguese International Rolando

Alan Pardew had told us yesterday that striker was the position he needs more competition in for next season, but he said the defense was strong, and therefore we didn’t really expect any new defenders to be brought in this summer.

Rolando – Porto center-back turns 28 next month

But news today that our new Director of Football Joe Kinnear, who’s back at work tomorrow,  has targeted Rolando, the 6’2″ Portuguese International, who plays at center-back for Porto.

That’s Rolando and not Ronaldo – we’re at least close to the spelling of a world-class player. 😀

But Rolando turns 28 at the end of next month, so he’s not exactly a youngster,  and was loaned out to Napoli last season, where he played only 11 times..

Rolando moved to Porto in 2008 from Belenenses and it seems QPR boss Harry Redknapp was keen to do a January deal for the player.

The fee for the player is said to be £5M, and thats close to the £5.5M he’s valued at on

It’s also an amount Newcastle would pay out for another center-back – although we have doubts about whether we are really after a center-back – after Coloccini said he would be staying on Tyneside.

Rolando has played 174 times for Porto with 17 goals, and he played 99 times at CF Belenenses Lissabon with 7 goals.

Everton are also said to be interested in the 18 times capped Portuguese International.

i would pick Willo over him any day of the week, iv’e watched loads of Porto games and he’s pathetic, he is by all means a younger version of Bramble or Boumsong ( spelling )

Boycotting one game is not enough more would have an impact but the fat man already has his money from season ticket sales so in that respect he would not care but frm the outside looking in media would be all over it I see that as good

Jail – 30,000 not attending a game in protest would tell me that they aren’t that peed off by Ashley’s running of the club that they can be bothered to skip a game.

It doesn’t mean they are Ashley lovers – how many Tory supporters are Cameron lovers but those that aren’t aren’t out on the streets protesting.

The problem with blogs like this is that the Ashley haters think the majority of fans share their extreme views when in reality the blog is probably used by far less than 1% of Toon fans. If the extreme views where reflected in the majority ie., 30,000 of the season ticket holders, then organising a big protest for one gane shouldn’t be a big problem.

How is boycotting a game good? So not going along to support your team you think would help us this season? Also Newcastle always has stuff in the papers about them so place is a media playground already don’t need any more controversy in my opinion

not seen this player but i do think we need another cb in the place of saylor/williamson as imo they are not good enough.

we desperatly need a signing though pref str/wing to stop the worry we will not sign anyone ^^

and i wont boycott the game as i would not disown my family ! we all have a choice and even though we do not like whats happening theres nothing to stop us walking away with no consiquency’s ! personally i’ve stuck with nufc through all the bad times in the past and frankly this gets easier to deal with now.

Personally I think there are more pro Ashley fans are on here than attend games, you know my views on Mike Ashley but I still got to about 12 games last season, so far I think Mashley is being tolerated but as I say another season like last and I think we will see change.

Gfp13 – my point is that fans on here are saying that Ashley is the devil in disguise and that he is ruining our club. They make these claims as if they are gospel and sharec by the majority of fans.

Plenty of them also suggest boycotting matches, season ticket purchase, Wonga Toon shirts and buying from SD. I am just saying if they are right about the level of Ashley hatred it should be relatively easy to organise a mass protest and the best way to do that imo is a one match boycott of a Sky home game.

It won’t happen simply because the vast majority of fans are sensible enough to see that whilst Ashley is far from perfect he is far from the devil in disguise.

Pardew says the defence is strong! He has not viewed last seasons goals against column and he must have missed the home games with Sunderland and Liverpool. We do not have a defensive full back which puts extra pressure on the CBs. However, my big concern is with the lack of creativity in midfield, Cisse was starved and feeding on scraps. Your favourites are not up to the job Mr Pardew.

Jail – if we aren’t shaping up to look like having a good season after 12 games max – especially with our relatively easy start – I’ll be spitting venom if its because Ashley hasn’t signed the players we need and/or Pardew is fkn things up and Ashley hasn’t sacked him.

I keep saying, I’m not a blind Ashley lover I just look at things from a more realistic angle than other fans. The McKeag’s and Westwood’s milked our club when they owned it and the Hall’s and Shepherd weren’t far behind. Ashley is the only one who has put plenty of his own money into the club and imo he does have a plan and he is genuinely ambitious but he isnt going to try and compete financially with the Maktoums and Abramovich. That means us fans have to be more patient and realistic than we’d like to be.

Stuart. Remind JFK it’s Rolando as much as you want – it’ll not make any difference.

Judging by his record on players’ names so far, it’s clear that he’s got the retention span of a newt!

    Nowt personal you understand but….

Well, every single contribution JFK has made so far has served to set us back so pursuing a duff centreback nobody wants when we are after 2 strikers seems plausible enough.

Gfp13. —– if we had boycotted a couple of years ago when we should have , maybe we wouldn’t be going through this embarrassing mess we have at present . All thes so called ” do gooders ” who think boycotting is wrong , don’t help the club in the long run . People boycott because they care , whereas some people just want to see a game of football and couldn’t give 2 f,,ks about the future of our great club , all this ” must support the team garbage ” is the reason we haven’t won nowt for 55 bloody years . Do gooders do more harm than good

Cabaye played 20 minutes of pre season football and was persuaded that rest rather than surgery was the answer. A massive error by our medical staff as he looked well short of fitness going into winter and a lengthy absence following surgery. He permanently looked knackered after about an hour and will benefit from a full pre season and friendly games.

Cabaye is capable of being one of the classiest midfielders in Europe but was missing physically and mentally for a good deal of an abysmal season. So what were looking to next season and based on his debut season we know what he is capable of contributing to a midfield. His range of passing is exceptional and he is our midfield general dictating the play and recycling the ball.

Part of the problem for Yo when playing was that he had too much defensive work to do covering for Tiote . Cabaye is tenacious enough to play in a fluid central midfield pairing with Sissoko . He’s got a mean streak in him which all the best midfielders do.
    Don’t sell Cabaye.

I get sick of people knocking Taylor as he is a very good defender who has suffered like our goal keeper by a lack of regular playing partners and a midfield who cannot retain possession.

If the midfield and forwards did their job our defensive record would have been much better.

Simpson also suffered but was steady and IMO a better defender than Debuchy. Just look at the goal line clearance from Simpson and Taylor however you put somebody in front of them like HBA and they have to do the job of two players and have to clean up when HBA loses the ball.

Funnily enough HBA gets no abuse yet he is one of the major problems and that’s why he can’t get in the French team.

JFK needs to off load Williamson before we buy anybody and I can’t see that happening therefore I expect the defence to stay as it is.

It’ll be interesting to see who JFK does off load as he hasn’t got a lot of time as the season is approaching quickly
