Is Newcastle’s Mercurial One Fully Fit Again – Video

10:08 am, Monday, July 15th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 28 Comments

While the press would probably love it if there was disfunction and controversy at Newcastle this summer, the truth is that training is going well, and Newcastle will play their first game of pre-season at Motherwell tomorrow night.

And while Newcastle fans are getting just a wee bit worried that we have not brought in any senior players this summer, the five Frenchmen we brought in last January will have a full pre-season, and should be a lot better for Newcastle in the new season – and that’s good news.

One player who is in good fettle this summer, according to the Evening Chronicle today, is our mercurial French International winger Hatem Ben Arfa.

Hatem’s been at Newcastle for three full seasons now, but due to injury the 26 year-old has played only 56 times with 10 goals and 11 assists, and last season he was dogged by that hamstring injury he picked up in the Europa League game at home to Maritimo in November.

And Ben Arfa didn’t play much at all after that, and it seemed that the Newcastle medics didn’t handle his injury too well either, and on his return at Fulham in December, he scored a wonderful goal but re-injured the hamstring and was out for over three months.

And it was thought he needed an operation on the hamstring, and then he didn’t – so the situation is he didn’t have an operation.

But we have to hope he doesn’t pick up another hamstring injury this season – because that could point to a physical weakness – or that whatever’s wrong with his hamstring has not been fixed, and that would be bad news.

What would be good news is if Ben Arfa can stay fit all season, and show us some of the magic he is capable of, like the goals he scored at home against Blackburn Rovers and Bolton, which are two of the best individual goals ever scored at St. James Park.

So to lift your spirits this Monday morning, take another look at Ben Arfa’s two fantastic goals, and of course we won both games in the season before last.

Wow – looking forward to seeing Ben Arfa score a few more like those next season. :D

    Lilongwe Geordie

I agree with you, Tomkins albeit is not an amazing world class player he is better than Perch, but had the same versatility.

I also agree he is the same if not better than STaylor, yet younger. For 4 million I would take him, but not sure if I would pay 5 million or over…..

7 million is too much, but shows West Ham value him some what for a reason!

As someone has already pointed out; it would be great to get a Papiss Cissé shirt without The curse of Wonga on it!!

People moan daily about Jonas, but that was a lovely finish against Blackburn!

While hoping to bolster his ranks in the attacking third of the field, Pardew claims to be happy with his defensive unit.

He has been linked with a move for a centre-half, possibly West Ham United’s James Tomkins, but the Magpies manager says his focus is on other areas.

Pardew added: “I think we’re pretty strong there.”

Whats the bet that we sell ameobi and cisse (due to Wonga) and bring in Bent and 1 other like Remy. Would Still be a striker short imo but they would be an upgrade at least.

@ Jeff, Thats not really enough because if the main reason you want him is to fill in as a DMF you have obviously forgot that we already have about 4 player to fill that position. I just do feel he will better our squad, Only thing going for him is he is English.

How anyone could be happy with Willo is beyond me!

…look at our defensive record nd we all know what happens it Colo gets injured and Saylor will not hold up.

We need to upgrade our fringe players…all of them!

Don’t believe pards when he discusses his defence lads.

He wants to strengthen! The money is there.

He also scored an absolute screamer I recall, cutting from tthe left on the edge of the box striking the ball on the volley face on and near fair busting the net. good good stuff.!

Torq, Your confident we will spend this summer. when do you think the spending will start and how many new additions do you think we will see?? Lastly do you think if we signBent and one other we will finally get rid of Shola??

  • 19 John Tudor // Jul 15, 2013 at 10:33 AM

    Torq

It was a nice finish, and he scored a reasonable goal with is head this season. But runs like that into the box are so rare. His “chances” largely come from cutting in from wide positions and shooting from outside the box, and he rarely gets any real power to beat a keeper even if he gets it on target.

His goal record is so poor for someone who has played in an advanced position most of his time here.

  • 23 TorqToon // Jul 15, 2013 at 10:42 AM

Jamesy – Personally I think we WILL strengthen and spend some money. We DON’T need mass signings.

3 first team players (CB, AM and CF) is all we need. We have to add creativity to this side! Then some up and coming youngsters to replace those who have left. I think if bent signs, that will be it for shola. And as much as people don’t like bent, he is an upgrade on shola.

That is based on nobody leaving, but if say cabs were to go, then I would look at cash plus player deals. Cisse isn’t leaving. Nor is HBA. There won’t be a mass exodus.

I’ve only see Tomkins on TV in bits &pieces of games & have never been impressed by him.Anybody give me an opinion of what kind of player he is,whats he good/poor etc.

  • 25 TorqToon // Jul 15, 2013 at 10:44 AM

Potski – I do agree. I’ve met him a few times and he is NUFC through and through! And true gent.

But unfortunately sub par for our needs this season. He won’t be shifted out, but don’t think we will see as much of him.

Marvs is looking amazing in training.

  • 26 wynsleap // Jul 15, 2013 at 10:54 AM

I would think this is Benny’s ‘make or break’ season.
He could be the main bright spot for us this coming campaign if he can stay fit but I have severe doubts about our training methods and backroom staff keeping him that way.
Re Bent and Tompkins – why should we have them when their own little clubs don’t want them around? Second rate purchases in my humble opinion.

Mt Tudor, Ed’s already commented on a PSG bid and it’s been done to death!
