Newcastle Defender Staying Put – Gosling Deal Held Up

10:39 am, Monday, July 15th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 415 Comments

There was a report in the Daily Mirror over a week ago that Newcastle were willing to give Steven Taylor and £6M to get QPR’s Loic Remy.

steven taylor anzhi

Steven Taylor – going nowhere this summer

Now we wouldn’t put it past Harry Redknapp to ask for that deal, but there’s just no way Newcastle would let one of their two starting center-backs leave Newcastle so we get Remy into the club.

And there is news today in the local papers that Alan Pardew has no intention of letting Steven Taylor leave the club, and remember that late last season Alan was pushing for Taylor to be included ion the England squad.

And Steven made the squad but didn’t pick up his first full cap for England in the March World Cup qualifying games for Group H at San Marino (won 8-0) and Montenegro (drew 1-1).

And Newcastle need to keep some local home-grown players at the club, and that’s especially true since we seem to be losing a number of our English players this summer.

Danny Simpson has left for QPR, James Perch has signed on at Wigan and Steve Harper is having a medical at Hull City today,

dan gosling atromitos

Dan Gosling – Newcastle holding out for bigger fee

And it looks likely that 23 year-old Dan Gosling will sign on at Crystal Palace, but Newcastle are said to be holding out for a bigger fee from the newly promoted London club.

Newcastle agreed a £8M fee for Remy in January, so we’re not sure why there’s a delay in putting in a bid for the French International striker, since Alan Pardew has told the world that we are after both Remy and Aston Villa striker Darren Bent.

The saga to bring in a new striker this summer could continue for a while yet, but there’s no way we are going to lose one of our best defenders this summer.

Ed the delay in Remy could be what every other clubs reason for not bidding for him legal problems on his end

the toon loves a good ole criminal, think weve had the most bad boys at our club than anyother club has had in the world
see as there is no decent news, lets name them

    duncan ferguson
    joey barton
    lee bowyer
    kieron dyer
    paul gascoigne

  • 3 Slank // Jul 15, 2013 at 10:46 AM

I agree that the delay by us and others in bidding for Remy may have something to do with the uncertainty surrounding his legal status.

However, I see no reason why we couldn’t put in an offer but subject to him not being convicted.

Potski – I do agree. I’ve met him a few times and he is NUFC through and through! And true gent.

But unfortunately sub par for our needs this season. He won’t be shifted out, but don’t think we will see as much of him.

Marvs is looking amazing in training!!

Were any of those you have listed awaiting a legal judgement (like Remy) before we bought them or did they commit crimes whilst employed by Newcastle (Barton) or had they served their time like Duncan Ferguson? Big difference.

The NUFC board can screw our image quite easily, not sure they would think twice about a player who would do it too.

Torq…I must say I don’t agree with your assessment!

…all I think we need in terms of width is a forward (maybe two depeding on what kind of football Pardew wants to play) and a backup RB.

In terms of quality we to upgrade a bunch of players and send a handful outon loan.

These Swap deals + cash? They are always in the press, but can anybody actually remember instances when it actually happens?
The only one that sticks in my memory is when ManU signed Andy Cole, and we got Keith Gillespie as part of the deal, and that was a long time ago.
    Anybody remember another example?
Does it really happen in football today?

true the circumstances are a little bit different, but I just said newcastle like a bad boy.

as it stands he is innocent, my legal understanding would be that if they had sufficient evidence against him he would have been arrested, charged and bailed. None of those things have happened. he is awaiting confirmation that the ‘case’ will go no further. rape is such a hard thing to prove with no evidence as its one persons word against another.

personally I would sign him on the condition he is not convicted.

we (newcastle) cant complain, top class striker, possibly world class this time next year for only 6ish million and hes young and french.

what more could we ask for

  • 31 TorqToon // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:01 AM

Jesp – You think we have enough creativity in our midfield?!

I certainly don’t. Marv and hba change a game on their own. Cabaye dips in and Out games.

I stated we need 2 forwards, (1 striker and somebody to create in our midfield. Plus a 3rd choice CB. You say 2 forwards and a RB.

So we arent too far apart, sir!

  • 32 toonaids // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:01 AM

were tiote and woodgate bad boys?

i nknow about this tiote thing but thats hardly something a bad boy would do.

  • 34 TorqToon // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:04 AM

Jesp – Problem is mate. Former colleagues of mine work at the club. And they told me how great he looks.

But had I come out and said that right away, it opens up into a so called ITK attack. When in fairness, they work in the medical field and purely tell me how sharp he is looking,

    Lose – lose situation.

But all that aside, if we get him at his peak, and keep him fit, he can rival hba at Times!

How does that work? We pay hard cash up front normally. 6 months time (at least if it goes to a trial in the Crown Court) he gets convicted and sent down for 4 years, “Arry, can we have our money back?”

“No, my dogs looking after it in an offshore account. It’s all legal and above board, honest, guv.”

Forget Remy – no-one is going to pay millions for someone who could end-up in the slammer for years.

Any news on Obertan leaving? Surely we are going to see this waste of space while we can still get something for him? The most frustrating player in the squad by a mile. Bags of potential just completely unsuited to the Prem. Similar to Luque. He could still be of value to a team in France I would imagine. You would expect some news of some sort today now that Kinnear is back. This is the slowest window ever!

  • 53 potski // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:24 AM

    Too aids

Wrong, he was arrested and bailed by the Met:

    http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-22537941

He is waiting for Crown Prosecution Service to decide if there is sufficient evidence for a court case. Given the very high profile such a case would have in the media, that decision will be made at a very senior level, so doubtful that it will be resolved very soon.

He has been bailed to go back to the police in September, so AFTER THE WINDOW CLOSES.

Woodie was a bad boy, involved in an attack on a student in Boro IIRC on a night out with other Leeds players. Bowyer was charged with a racially motivated assault, but the jury found him not guilty. Woodie had the good grace to put his hands up to being involved and taking his punishment.

Torq…I missed one of your questions there.

As for creativity I am okay when you look at our possible 11 pick.

I did say alot of our fringe players need upgrading and I would love for us to ship Obertan out and someone alot more creative in.

But if you look at our best team possible with the addition of a forward who can play wide I think we have enough creativity.

Pardew just new to find a way to fit in both Marv and Benny I think and bench Tiote and Jonas.

  • 59 TorqToon // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:34 AM

Jesp – Everything is great my end, sir. Still plodding along as you do. :-)

Benzia – Very bright prospect. 18-19yrs old. Scores at international youth level and is a future international imo. Would cost probably around €3mil as highly regarded over here.

We’ve got bugger all chance of strengthening our bench unless we take a punt on young players like Haidarra. No decent established player is gonna come to Newcastle to sit on the bench, and that includes Darren Bent.

If we’re in for anyone at all, it’ll be for players who’ll expect to start or young unproven talent. Not the easiest job in the world securing players who fit the bill effectively either, as we’ve seen proven on countless occasions over the years.

Reckon even obertan’s mum wants him shipped out because he’s not good enough!!!
Think it could be said of a few of our fringe players that they haven’t been given a real chance, but for me that doesn’t apply to obertan he’s had numerous chances and rarely impressed can only really think of one Europa game (Brugge?) when he played LW and looked a bit better

  • 66 potski // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:41 AM

    Evidence of this “history”?

You might be willing to buy him, but if you had £8 million to spend then I think your lawyers would be telling you it is a stupid gamble. It’s not just that he might be locked up, but the club will on the front page of every paper in the world if it goes to trial. I remember the Woodgate/Bowyer case, everyday it was the top news story. IMO one of the main reasons for Leeds fall from one of the top clubs in PL.

Under normal employment circumstances if an employee commits a crime, especially as bad as rape, his employer can and usually does cancel their employment contract.

If he is convicted and hasn’t been sold and still therefore contracted to QPR will they cancel his contract, thereby saving themselves tens of thousands of pounds in wages a week?

Or will they continue to pay him on the hope that they can sell him when he comes out of the clink. For a short sentence it would be worth it but for a long stretch his value would diminish and therefore not worth keeping him on their books.

With Colo and m’Biwa no way should Saylor be a starter.

Yes he got a call up but that’s after 8 others had dropped out.

Would be so angry if this scuppered getting the desperately needed fast goal scorer who can play left of a front 3 or another striker in that mould.

Saylor is just the Geordie Bramble and just not a very good footballer no matter how much he thinks he is.

  • 83 potski // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:59 AM

Remy has four years left on his contract. If he goes down, and he course he is innocent until proven guilty, so it is a big IF, then he’s unlikely to get out in that time. But if he did, then what physical and mental state would he be in? Up to playing games at the highest level, no way.

As I said, he has not been convicted, nor even officially charged of rape. But why would a club take that risk?

The only way to avoid the financial risk is to take him on loan, with an agreement to buy later, if all charges are dropped.

  • 84 pawl250 // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Well guys the bottom line we should be thanking Torq for his contribution and snippets of info.

We must remember nothing in football is 100% until the signing is unveiled so the harsh treatment for both Remy and JK appointment is nothing to do with Torq.

He simply states what he has heard in what seems to be a reliable field. It is up to us how we choose to process and use that information.

Just because we are in talks with Remy and De Jong it does not mean we will sign them, it is simply talking nothing more.

Those who twist it into something other than that, then blame Torq for kindly sharing information are the reason he is reluctant to let us know what he does these days.

And that is unfortunate because its the minority that spoils it for the rest of us!

…maybe Pardew should just accept that and move him on. For me there are alot of other players who have had time enough to impress:

I still think if the only deals we do this summer are a good 20 goal a season striker and a good left sided player we will be a decent team.

Obviously a few more in for depth but we are covered to a good enough level.

  • 94 pawl250 // Jul 15, 2013 at 12:06 PM

The only way we could incorporate Marveaux and Ben Arfa in the same team, using our current team is 4-3-3.

    ——————— Krul ———————-
    Debuchy – Mbiwa – Coloccini – Santon
    —————————————————
    —— Cabaye — Tiote — Sissoko ———
    —————————————————
Ben Arfa ——- Cisse ——— Marveuax

That would be a pretty hard working, creative team!

I any signing would have to be amazing to be in it.

I mean I want Remy/De Jong but where do they fit? If Marv is on form, he is every bit as creative and dangerous as Ben Arfa so its arguable to say why should Remy slot in.

De Jong is more central attacking, and could arguably provide a better threat for the style we have than Cisse does.

But seriously loving the look of that team!

Still missing likes of Anita, STaylor, Gouffran who are all decent back ups if nothing else.

    Colwell

Barton signed for Newcastle on 14 June 2007, and this followed protracted arguments about a £300,000 pay off he claimed to be entitled to from City, because he didn’t submit a written transfer request. So negotiations following NUFC triggering his contract clause started weeks before, immediately following the end of the season and appointment of Allerdyce by Shepherd.

While the contract details were being sorted out (resulting in NUFC effectively paying Barton’s bonus) this was going on:

“In 2007, businessman Mike Ashley purchased the combined stakes of both Douglas and John Hall, 41% share in the club, through a holding company St James Holdings, with a view to buy the rest.[69] Upon purchasing this share he appointed Chris Mort as chairman, while gaining more shares, owning 93.19% of the club by 29 June 2007.[70] This figure reached 95% on 11 July 2007, forcing the remaining shareholders to sell their shares”

Remy would be on 47/3 bail which wouldn’t have any restrictions on travel or movement.
If he was charged then he could have conditions set by police and later the courts after appearing.
These things can take a long time to resolve and it will be for the CPS to make the charging decisions

Been reading without posting for almost a week, due to boring repetitive subject matter. During this time i have noticed that one person seems to be allowed to abuse, insult and be generally mean to people on here, then pass it off as “his opinion”. Furthermore it seems to be prohibited to defend oneself against this due to this persons past ill health. I find this unacceptabale behaviour, i have to say.

“Mort worked for Mike Ashley on his takeover of Newcastle United, and took over as chairman of the club on 24 July 2007, representing Ashley.”

Barton was a Shepherd/Allerdyce signing. The facts prove that they initiated the deal, and the club was committed to it by the time Ashley was in full control. If he had any opportunity to veto it before pen was put to paper on the contract, then I have no doubt Allerdyce assured him that Joey would be a good boy and not cause any trouble for NUFC.

Did he put his neck on the line to get Barton? He probably did, and once Barton was arrested for assault, Allerdyce’s days were numbered. The results on the pitch, were the excuse Ashley/Mort needed to get rid of him.

Wow, the simple thing is let bygones be bygones….

Its not hard. I can be called insulted then I would juts forget it and move on. I am not a child.

I do not recall arguments with specific members because arguments are not things I wish to remember.

Like I said, the majority of us are adults, or classed as adults (18+) and well if you are upset over a little name calling, or aggressive arguing then you never really stand a chance in life.

You should visit the ALS forum, its constant insult after insult and I hear not one complain.

This is generally a positive environment but when it gets nasty you just need to knuckle down and take it for what it is ….. A WORD or WORDS…. Made up by so many letters, hardly damaging if you ask me.

If you take everything in life so seriously you wouldn’t last long!

  • 132 Markaccus // Jul 15, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Its all nandy pandy! People need to lighten up over something in the past.

Insult me if you wish, I will join in and return the exact way I am being treated in the process….. the difference though after all the insults I will forget and move on…. some people on hear clearly cannot seem to let something small go, as though it dictates their life.

Wishing death on someone is in itself abusive, and down right offensive to anyone, so i agree these people should receive some kind of strong reprimand.

If someone has a different opinion, and you will never agree with them, then agree to differ and move on. Acknowlege like you say. Sometimes as you also said some refuse to agree to differ and begin insulting people on the other side of it, and at this point i agree it is hard not to jump dpwn their throats. I had this with someone near the end of the season… i even kept asking this person to accept we would never agree but to stop with the personal insults. Eventually things settled enough but it just isn’t pleasant having to argue like that all the time.

  • 184 pawl250 // Jul 15, 2013 at 1:39 PM

    John

Why do you feel Anita is better though?

I loved Tiote a few seasons ago, I feel since that goal against Arsenal he feels he is Iniesta or Messi trying to dribble past people etc.

If he were to go back to basics he may well pick up his previous form. He needs to be the “out” similar to Alonso and Madrid, he needs to make himself available for a pass ALWAYS.

He used to do that, now he is like a bull in a china shop.

    For me

I am willing to give Tiote another go, but agree Anita to replace if he is the standard of last year. Really needs to get himself back to his ‘A’ game.

Pass, move, pressure. No running up the pitch wasting possession with 30-40 yard attempts!!

  • 185 Markaccus // Jul 15, 2013 at 1:39 PM

I will be sorry to see him go. His best game last year was v chelski. He was in an attacking mf 3 with socks and goofy(i think) and kept switching from wide to central, resulting in a good headed goal. He cant really cross from the wrong side so i would have liked to see him in the centre a bit more.

I think a lot of fans donmt appreciate his change in roles for the team. His workrate is phenomenal and the number of free kicks he wins for the team is huge.

If the club sign the right players this season, then I think his role will be reduced to the bench but I can see him being an asset if used properly.

  • 235 jayphoto // Jul 15, 2013 at 2:20 PM

Actually think jonas could be a key player if he adapts to a central holding role! His work rate and distance covered during a match is high, hes also got a great tackles won percentage! Hes an intelligent player too! He even looked half decent on the right! Really don’t get why he plays on the left tho

  • 239 expatmag // Jul 15, 2013 at 2:26 PM

    Jay

To be honest, I think it is down to Pardews fascination with playing right footed players on the left and left footed players on the right.

When Ben Arfa cuts inside, he is crowded out and likewise with Jonas and Gouffran.

What really annoys me is that when we attack down the left, the left sided player cuts in and our full back on that side, Santon, does it too so we rarely get close to the bye line to cut the ball back for Cisse and co.

I actually believe that if given some specialist coaching and told he would get his chanvce, Obertan could still do a job.

    RE: Tiote

I firmly believe he can be at level he used to play, if only Pardew allows him to stay back ala Makelele.
Not going to shoot, dribble or make an assist.

How many assist he got last year?

He doesn’t need that. He used too much energy moving up the field, making him tired to track back and defend our back four.

I heard in one interview is that, Pardew encouraged him to move up, which I think is totally wrong. We have creative player to attack, and he should just do his job at the back.

I think the confidence excuse has gone on for too long really…i think he simply isn’t good enough.

He has pace but the amount he has isn’t rare in the modern game so teams combat that easily.

Totally agree with that idea. Consistent games would build his confidence. If we signed a wide forward or winger in the Remy, Sinclair, Wijnaldrum mould, that would be a decent option for him. Maybe even a loan back to a Lique 1 club in France.

I find with torq, he posts the info he hears during the course of his job. He never says anything is definite (such is the nature of football) but the things he hears tend to be more than rumour. Unfortunately, if a deal doesnt come off he gets jumped on immediatley as a fake, even if our interest in a player is later confirmed (in a couldnt get him over the kine speech) people still refuse to admit that he sometims hears things that most of us do not.

he can’t be infringing our club rules if he doesn’t work for our club.

if the selling club infringes an agreement by telling torq when he works with them then that is their issue, not his.

    John

Thing is he is not covered by nufc club rules as he does not work for nufc. I am not sure, but as i understand it he does not work for any club, but works with clubs in injury rehab.

I personally dont see any problem with him posting what he hears from players and staff of those clubs. Provides hope, and usually not false hope. It doesnt hurt anyone really.

  • 282 Jail for Ashley // Jul 15, 2013 at 3:26 PM

I don’t know why people are getting upset at the lack of transfer activity as Mashley showed his hand in the last two windows and in doing so showed us his mindset, a team that was good enough to finish fifth is good enough to avoid relegation and a team that finished fifth a season ago with five recruitments and no Europa league should be able to do so again, the fact that about eight players have been let go or sold in that time shall be swept under the carpet.

    Hello JFA. How are you?

I am sure that a couple of quality additions will come in and help an already useful squad as long as we dont sell anyone of high profile.

My own opinion is that we have probably 18 players currently in the squad capable of getting the club into the top 10 but if we have a run of injuries like last season, we will have problems as we will be relying on the kids again and that may be the major worry for most folk.

if carr scouts messi and nufc enquire about his availability and think about putting in a bid for him it would be your personal choice if you get your hopes up so there is no point crying if that player did not sign as there is no such thing as a guarenteed signing untill the contract is signed.

  • 336 jayphoto // Jul 15, 2013 at 4:11 PM

Thing is with transfers is that they fall through so easily! Fully believe people like Torq hear stuff throughout their jobs, i myself hear a fair bit to do with Stoke and Villa, some of it comes off, some of it doesn’t! I even met Yacine Brahimi last year at Villas ground, yet that transfer fell through! Clubs have huge lists of targets, usually alot of players don’t become available till later in the window! This can cause deals to fall through, for example we could be deep in negotiations with a darren bent but then completely withdraw if a jeremy menez becomes available! Doesnt make the person who says bent is joining nufc any less credible! Nufc is weird because usually local journos know the ins and outs of a club, alot more than they would ever print because they actually care about the club and need the good relations with clubs to sell their papers unlike national journos who dont need to worry! But at nufc nothing gets out to the press printed or not, i feel sorry for mark at the Sunday sun whos a decent guy and lee ryder as they have to come up with 2 toon stories a day and are given nothing by the club

If you cannot comment with any substance, then you have no right to criticise the contributions of others.

right lads. sorry to have to revisit the cisse topic again , but i have been into a long conversation with a friend of ours who is a practicing muslim. S he has got the full story of cisse and the wonga shirt affair and has pointed out some issues between muslims and interest charges.
Point 1. if cisse is a practicing muslim, he should not have worn the virgin money shirt. It is forbidden to promote interest ( REGARDLESS OF THE CHARGES) point 2 it is forbidden to to receive money to make a personal gain., unless that person has worked for that money .
Point 3 they are allowed to borrow for a mortgage and borrow for a loan as long as there are no interest charges involved. . To allow this to happen they must bank at an halal bank . they do not charge any interest on mortgage s or on loans , the muslim will also not receive any interest for banking at an halal bank.
After talking to my friend i am of the conclusion that cisse is angling for a move away as he is using his religion as a get out clause – gone befoer the start of the season.

  • 354 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 15, 2013 at 4:33 PM

I’ve noticed how people are saying it is unfair to compare Wonga with banks, and in practice they are very different indeed, with one charging astronomical interest rates.

But the comparison is not made in an attempt to prove they are the same, but merely to point out that if a Muslim player is going to get up in arms about being sponsored by a money lender then surely they would have been up in arms about being sponsored by Virgin Money.

If Cisse leaves amidst this “Wonga row” then I for one will lose a lot of respect for him as I will see it as being very disingenuous.

  • 356 Mister Tuff // Jul 15, 2013 at 4:36 PM

I think that the lack of something new at SJP is the root cause of all the bickering on here. No new signings, nobody getting the boot, no recent PR gaffes by Percy, no interviews from Looney Joe. Clearly nothing for you boys to discuss. I note yesterday the “infill” was reminiscing about good players at the Toon over the years. However, these topics have a limited lifespan and
therefore the bickering resumes. It can be a natural phenomenon for groups to turn on themselves when relevant circumstances prevail.
However, I have to say that some folk are acting like complete tarts -ooooh bahooo -you called me a name first — bahoo.
Others – bahooo bahooo – I’ve been insulted -so I’m running off and never coming back-

TADS – ref Mr T’s work permit – must say I do not know a lot about such matters -however I will see if I can find out. I would have thought there would be input from his employer. But I’ll see what I can find out. What is not in dispute is that Mr T could face jail in respect of some of the charges against him. At the Magistrates court -you can get a maximum of 6 months however at the Crown Court the judge has at his disposal the maximum possible sentence in respect of that particular offence. Whilst jail time is probably unlikely – he still runs the risk.

    manu
    manc
    arse
    liver
    chel
    swan
    tot

all ahead of us (and yes i class swansea ahead of us)
and we are somewhere in the middle of the next group (i think everton are hopefully in our group now also otherwise we drop another place)

so if we overachieve we could get 8th at a real push as it is atm (optomistic) but realistically i’m thinking 10th-11th.

in other words i think we definatly need wingers/strikers to challenge even for 8th/7th

  • 388 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 15, 2013 at 4:55 PM

With regards to the 25 we need to select for our squad, the way I see it at the moment, we have:
    – 17 no-brainers (13 are not home-grown)
    – 9 possibilities (Gosling, Amafatlatino, Shola, Obertan, Fergie, Tav, Dummet, Newton, Inman)

I’m not including Raylor there as he’s project to miss the entire season. I’d have him in otherwise.

Al the rest count a under 21, and we have some decent players there like Haidara, Bigi, Vuckic and Sammy.

So, we’ll definitely need to sell or loan out some of those 9 in order to make room, as it is that would be 26 in total. Also, we only have room for 4 more non home-grown players.

    TADS,

I’m not a lawyer, though I have been in court a lot :)
He’s been referred up to the Crown Court because the charge has a potential maximum sentence beyond the 12 months imprisonment the magistrates can impose.
However, he is effectively accused of telling porky pies about his licence and insurance. Part of the question will be whether he gained financially by his alleged fraud, or caused others to lose money, and whether he was financially motivated to defraud. Either way, I’d have thought he’s unlikely to go to prison, and I can’t see how his work permit or possible deportation could be an issue. But I’m not a lawyer.

You’re point being? Your original comment was that these two clubs are on par with us on the basis that they’ve not signed any players “of note” when the reality is that they don’t necessarily need to make massive investment, whereas we are in need of investment.

Can’t say I understand why you felt the need to try and make the point that it didn’t really matter that we’ve signed no one purely because Man U and Arsenal haven’t really signed anyone either.

I’d argue that we got significantly stronger in January though. With those players having half a season under their belt, plus a proper pre-season, we’ll have a good enough team for top 8 easily. Hopefully the injury and form issues that happened to Cabaye, Colo, Krul, Ben Arfa and others won’t happen this year.

I couple of good signings and I’d be happy to put a few quid on top 8.

That is true! But I still don’t think that’s a reason to panic and start signings loads of players. I really genuinely think we don’t need too many players to achieve the goal that we should have this season. We don’t go from finishing 16th to targeting top 6, that would be silly. The goal should be top 10 and I would hope they are really targeting the top 8.

Last night I had the pleasure of once again speaking to someone that really is ITK and what he told me was very interesting.

He said that things were moving along very nicely and just as they expected. They had a Summer plan that is well mapped out and by the time the season starts it will be just as they aniticipated. There will be some good players coming in and there will be a few more outgoings.

Take that as you want. I couldn’t get any names out of him but I tend not to ask many questions as I want our chats to continue.

  • 402 Jail for Ashley // Jul 15, 2013 at 5:03 PM

Anybody who has read the blog over the last year will know my views on that the biggest factor in our demise last year was the decision not to strengthen and the negative impact it had on the squad, if we fail to do so again exactly the same will happen except this time Pardew will be fired and Media Joe will be brought in to replace him.

The fans of both Man Utd and Arsenal are crying out for new signings. Man Utd’s midfield is looking poor for the champions, with Nani off-form, Scholes retired etc. And they have injury problems at the back too with Evra, Vidic and Ferdinand all having problems last season. Arsenal fans are desperate to sign players to break an 8 year run without a trophy.

I’m just wondering if they are panicking in the same way as the Newcastle fans…

I’ll guess that they’re not, because there’s plenty of time to go and they will be making some signings.

I’m 100% with your post 401, except…I really don’t think that JFK can be brought back to manage the team. I’ll be shocked if that happens again. I simply can’t believe that top players will respect a manager who has achieved so little. It’s one thing him negotiating to bring a player to the club because he claims to be good at spotting a decent player, another thing to call tactics in the modern game.

I’ll absolutely draw the line right there.

oh yes i completely agree with that buddy with no pressure and half a season under there belt i too believe they will be a lot better this season !

my concern is cisse and his goals (and goals from elsewhere if i’m honest) i really dont believe cisse will play the whole season again as imo we was very very lucky for him not to be injured last year.

we depend far too much on him and we really should not need to in a prem side as we should have other players getting goals also.

  • 410 SecretSausage // Jul 15, 2013 at 5:10 PM

    jesper,
You are right. I nearly didn’t bother posting it.
But what was interesting was his enthusiasm for the situation. It was as if they had mapped something out and it is running very smoothly and is going to work.
I asked about PEA and he said he couldn’t say much about it but that what I’d read was probably true but that it wouldn’t affect any plans as it was expected.

  • 411 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 15, 2013 at 5:11 PM

If you think of our bench now though, it’s not bad. We’ve got 17 players that I’m convinced Pardew wants to keep, plus a list of 9 fringe players and at least 2 very good U21 players (Haidara and Bigi). When our bench has a goalie plus 6 players of the level of Tav, Fergie or Sammy, I definitely worry…

That’s why I really want us to sign another top striker and another exciting winger/attacking midfielder.

  • 412 Jail for Ashley // Jul 15, 2013 at 5:13 PM

    TDsarf,
Why do you always take it to the extremes, we’re not asking to sign a load of players just the three or four we all know we need and on the flip side of where to target why should a team that finished fifth target top ten when a 12 to 15 M investment would have at least given us hope of finishing in a Euro spot, and please don’t mention Leeds or Portsmouth because around that amount wasvspent in January andas far as I know we didn’t get docked ten points for spending it.

  • 413 BandB // Jul 15, 2013 at 5:15 PM

As you might recall, I was a worried as you last summer that hubris was at work within the inner rectum (sorry..I meant sanctum)
They admitted later they’d under-cooked the summer, and tried to put it right in January. What they must not now be allowed to do in a month is claim they did THIS summer’s business early, and I will dance on the first apologist who offers this as an excuse. They can’t have it both ways. We still need players.

  • 414 croftus5678 // Jul 15, 2013 at 5:16 PM
