Papiss Cisse Career At Newcastle In Doubt – Surely Not

11:36 pm, Monday, July 15th, 2013 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 106 Comments

We were very surprised to read in the Shields Gazette tonight hat Papiss Cisse’s Newcastle future is said to be in the balance, and there have been other similar headlines over the last week or so.

papiss cisse 21`

Papiss Cisse – still in negotiations with Newcastle

Papiss is in dispute with Newcastle over wearing the Wonga insignia on his Newcastle shirt and training gear.

But this is some of what happens when the club sign up with on a four year deal, when the sponsor is hardly a well respected business in the UK, and charge phenomenal interest rates on pay-day loans to the very people who cannot afford them.

Under Sharia law, Muslims must not benefit from lending money to others, so in effect interest is prohibited for Muslims.

In the worst case for Newcastle, Cisse will not wear the Wonga insignia, and will either wear nothing on his shirt and training gear – or Cisse has offered to wear some Charity insignia instead of the Wonga signs.

The news is that Cisse is still talking to Newcastle, and the club is supposed to have met with the PFA today, and we assume that meeting went ahead.

And there is a precedent here, in that Frederic Kanoute, while at Sevilla refused to wear a strip bearing the name of the club sponsor, a gambling website, and initially Kanoute wore a blank wear the insignia should have been.

But he was then persuaded by his club that by wearing the insignia he wasn’t necessarily supporting betting – and he started to wear the sponsor insignia.

It certainly didn’t end up in Kanoute leaving Sevilla, so we are hoping the news that Cisse’s career at Newcastle is in danger, is simply an over-reach in the press.

Newcastle should be bringing in some new top strikers this summer, and not losing the best striker we have at the moment.

I remember I was at a Newcastle game, friendly match I think no idea who against though and before that Fraser Forster was out training with one of the assistants. Anyway, the person was crossing it in and Forster was coming out to catch it.

Bare in mind nobody was in the box, just him.

    He never caught it once.

Towards the end the bloke chipped it up to Forster at close range and he fumbled it once again. Played the game, was absolutely dreadful and got subbed at half time. Ever since then I never trusted the bloke.

She knows the raw materials needed to succeed and how to maximise potential with her professionalism and experience. Mister Tuff
Thanks for looking into that mate!
Mr T had certainly put himself into a tricky situation but tend to agree that the courts will be inclined to give him a huge fine and a bit of community service
Wonder the clubs stance if he got a imprisoned?
Wonder if they would be as lenient as they were with Barton?

  • 7 jimmysmith // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:44 PM

Sacking Pards, selling Tiote, Gutierrez etal, strikes me as throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Give them the right squad and preparation to succeed and then you can judge them objectively and fairly come Christmas.

    Repost from previous thread…

Slightly off topic but I’m sure someone would have mentioned this on here before and I’m sure it’s not even a possibility… What would people think about us signing Gary Hooper from Celtic instead of Bent from Villa?

If news reports are true, we’re baulking at the fee for Bent but QPR are looking at Hooper for £5m… Proven goalscorer (albeit no PL experience). I’d take the punt as a 3rd striker/impact sub. Also if he’s willing to ditch Champions League football to play in the Championship for QPR (reports suggest he is), it stands to reason he’d also be happy to play in the Premiership… even if not a regular starter. Seems like a potential good buy to me. Saw him play in the lower leagues of England and he knows where the goal is, no bones about it.

I am finding it frustrating that the likes of Norwich are showing more intent in the transfer window than we are… Hopefully some action this week though.

  • 10 manxpie // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:52 PM

tads u think a fine and community service is bad if he did that where i’m from he’d be banished for 5 years lol!
we don’t seem to take any shit from foreigners here!
qatada woulda been gone years ago lol

  • 11 james589 // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:54 PM

@2 wouldn’t trust anything Chris Sutton says as far as I could throw it after his disastrous stint as Lincoln City manager (I live local to Lincoln), but as I said on the previous thread it’s got to be good news and we can only hope her work can keep our best players fit.

  • 12 manxpie // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:56 PM

sazzer unfortunatley she aint as fit as the chelsea one but god i hope she sorts out the injuries

  • 13 dan5679 // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:58 PM

been informed no players will be coming in this week
bent price is to high at moment ..nothing else lined up as of yet

  • 14 Offkey // Jul 15, 2013 at 11:59 PM

On Cisse and Wonga (if true and not wild speculation when returning late to preseason) – In all honesty, do any of you really care if he wears the Wonga logo or not. Seems to me the only people this harms is Wonga……..and I couldn’t care less. If anything, I would love to see the publicity of them cancelling their sponsorship on that basis………..there would be uproar

  • 15 Fostino // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:01 AM

remy and a tricky winger with good final ball and we keep our top players with perhaps the removal of some deadwood and im a happy man. bye bye jonas, obertan, roman. a tall st to replace ameobi too but thats being greedy

  • 16 Sazzer // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:01 AM

The first testimonial that pops out on her company site. She can’t do much worse job than the guy we had last year, so, most likely good news…unless she’s Ashley’s or Joe’s current PT.

  • 17 manxpie // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:02 AM

plus tads he’s got wat another 5 years left on his contract i can’t see them wanting to pay that off without a penny back in transfers
if he goes down they’ll support him i reckon only coz it cheaper!

  • 18 Fostino // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:03 AM

ive just been informed that your a dope.

I used to go ferreting near there…I got bit by an angry ferret one evening ..also I fought long and hard with a squirrel one night a tree headbutted me ..I still have the scar

One of my taps is dripping, back in a mo ….

  • 20 Offkey // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:06 AM

Manx – they had to keep Joey because they accepted the breach of contract (e.g. going to prison) by telling him his wage would be reduced. They could have sacked without paying his contract, but by offering the wage reduction they basically said, ‘its not that bad what you have done’ this stopped him being sacked

  • 21 hadthetshirt // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:07 AM

I reckon we will wait till last few days of the window.Ashley is a gambler and he knows villa will have to sell. Not too mention all the wages he’s saving just now,by not buying.
As for Cisse I really cant see what all the fuss is about. All they have to do is take the writing off the shirt. It will look like a Team Sky cycling top and It will do them more good with the publicity about him not wearing it.

  • 22 james589 // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:08 AM

Apparently Kinnear’s the fittest he’s ever been so maybe we should hope she is?!

Definitely looks like she knows her stuff, extensive experience working with a host of athletes from various sports, not to mention marines etc. New ideas definitely welcome, hopefully she can change something up to give us a bit more resilience.

Hope this isn’t a signal of intent from the management though- dealing with our lack of strength in depth by trying to stop injuries occurring as opposed to signing quality replacements…

  • 23 Uncertain Toon // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:08 AM

Bit of a gash story from the Shields Gazette there.
Cisse might have spotted an opportunity to get his charity back home on his shirt which would certainly solve this little issue. If there is any credence whatsoever in this story then reading between the lines it could be used to his advantage.
Tis is a shame that this is the only story making the paper.
As for Chris Sutton, the bloke is a nkob, refusing to play for England B, however i would have had him in the toon at his peak.

  • 24 Over The Wall // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:09 AM

I was about to post this link too. Could be one of Newcastle’s most important signings this summer if she manages to help with the injury woes of last season. Was researching her a bit (on Twitter, Google etc.) and she seems to specialise in speed and power. Two areas Newcastle were definitely lacking in last season until the introduction of Sissoko.

  • 25 manxpie // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:10 AM

offkey its not harmed wonga at all they’ve been in the papers and news for the last few days and prob many more all for free they’ll be loving it expect an announcement soon saying all is fine.
they n the club will let them advertise it freely until it becomes an uncormfortable situation
remember one of sportsdirectnews first tweets??

  • 26 Joe Sophistication // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:10 AM

    Fostino ..

I agree ..we do need someone with a good final final ball..My mate is down to his last one after an operation a few years back now …I could ask him ?

  • 27 james589 // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:11 AM

    @Joe Sophistication…

Not far away, dad went to school in Bardney, used to visit two of his old teachers with him as a kid… My trips to Bardney used to end up with sweets and coins not scars haha 😛

  • 28 Offkey // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:12 AM

Manx – agree on that, I felt if it was really an issue, they would do what they did with the stadium. Brilliant publicity or them………but if they did pull the plug, I doubt it would do there rep much good.

  • 29 Sazzer // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:13 AM

  • 32 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:14 AM

Haha we’ll be starting the season with Gouffran and Ameobi up front.

  • 33 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:14 AM

I think the whole team should site religion as the reason for not wanting to wear the Wonga insignia 😉

…and while they are at it that they cannot play in a stadium wearing the SD logo lol

  • 34 Ketsbaia9 // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:14 AM

Still plenty of players to get rid of (Shola, Willo, Tavernier, Obertan etc).

  • 35 Joe Sophistication // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:15 AM

Are you aware that the Squirrels are all on crack cocaine around there ? ..they find the stashes in the trunks of trees and have all formed a habit ….they are really aggressive if they can’t get their fix now ..

  • 36 jimmysmith // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:15 AM

Saw some interesting posts discussing all time best Newc 11. If you added the proviso that any former player come into consideration at their peak whether in a toon shirt or not, then you have an impossible task made doubly so.

Keegan, Rush, Pearce, Barnes, Gazza, Ginola etc throw their hat into the ring with a vengeance .

    Laundry list of super players.

  • 37 Uncertain Toon // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:18 AM

Was the Wonga deal Llambeezys baby? Nice little parting gesture to add to the already big naughty pile of turmoil! There all as bad as each other and to that end they all need to go, save for Graham Carr.

I think picking or should i say trying to pick a team with that criteria could drive one insane or at least induce a mental breakdown, i’m getting a headache thinking about it!!!

  • 41 james589 // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:21 AM

This Wonga story is a load of chuff… Can’t help but think the club really need to sort out PR. Letting stories like this rumble on can’t do any good for our players’ preparation for the new season. It’s the same as not commenting on Kinnear’s appointment for days and days…
Get someone in to deal with these stories so players and management can focus on the important stuff.

Apparently we’re braced for a PSG Cabaye bid too so JFK’s “he’s going nowhere” mettle is set to be tested. Looks like they’re about to sign Cavani mind so hopefully they’re out of wonga themselves now!

  • 42 Offkey // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:21 AM

Manx – you can cancel a contract if one party either frustrates (goes to prison) or repudiates it (breaches to such a extent court says no longer valid) in either case, by offering a wage reduction first, it makes it very difficult to sack or claim the contract came to an end……… school basics really, I would have expected MAs advice to have been better

  • 43 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:22 AM

If it’s true, then it’s a minefield of logical problems to this argument (Virgin, him being paid by a company paid by Wonga etc.) but regardless- If he leaves, I will be livid.

We have no other decent striker, we need more, if we sell him we are done.

  • 44 james589 // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:23 AM

@Joe Sophistication the squirrels aren’t the only ones!

  • 45 jimmysmith // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:23 AM

Yeah, Wonga, the 8 yr contract fiasco and not buying last off season might be down to dirty dirk as much as anyone. If so, got off lightly when he should a been tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail.

  • 46 Sazzer // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:26 AM

    Maybe 😛

At least they trying to something about the injury issue.

  • 47 james589 // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:26 AM

Agreed… Cissé has worn Northern Rock and Virgin Money, as money-lending establishments I’m not sure there’s much of a difference between them and Wonga, except, you might argue, ethically. For me this is an absolute non-story. Clearly things are so quiet on the transfer front they have to find some other stories to print!

  • 48 Offkey // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:30 AM

Maybe its just Ramadan…..few people at my work are fasting and I doubt running around on a baking hot day is going to be good for Cisse if he cant drink water

  • 49 manxpie // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:33 AM

every business in the world is making money outer joe blog!
thats what they do theres no big story on nike adidas or any other big retailers in the world that made the word sweatshop world famous so seriously why are you all picking what and why your having a go
did you have the same feeling when we were sponsored by adidas or puma?
bad thing happen in there companies ya know?
i.e slave labour n such but hey there fashionable and its not happening in our country but hey lets just pick n choose our morality on wat the english press want to publish lol

  • 50 sello // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:35 AM

Newcastle def need to employ some new pr staff. I can understand them not reacting to every rumour but this one needs addressing. I reckon he wants out and I can’t blame him. I also think if we got 15 mill for him and brought in maybe bent , remy and a target man maybe demba ba, we would be better off up front. The way we lump the ball forward without putting in decent crosses requires two upfront .

  • 51 manxpie // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:37 AM

ah right offkey cheers thats wat i remember tho people sayin he didn’t even take a pay drop but ya know wat its like on here lol

James…Only jesting like you mate ..I love Lincolnshire ..

I recently had some bizz down near RAF Conningsby…?

Spelt wrong ….on way back I passed a canal boat ,,written on the Bow was Geordie’s barge or similar, and opposite was a Shop Geordis store ..just over a wee bridge on the right heading north .I popped into the shop , Geordie was away sailing the Atlantic ..according to the lass that was minding the Shop ..It was a real old English setting .. Love Lincolnshire …I could easily become a man of the road round that area ..great .

  • 53 jimmysmith // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:40 AM

Manx all thats undeniably true, but isn’t it important to draw a line in the sand somewhere and increase awareness of these things, otherwise it’s pretty regressive stuff.

  • 54 Offkey // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:42 AM

Manx – yeah, there was no pay drop because once they offered it and threatened with the sack if didn’t accept, Joey went to see a law student who told him he had MA over the metaphorical barrel now, MA’s hands were tied and he couldn’t touch Joey

  • 55 Joe Sophistication // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:43 AM

I said she was cute, but it looks like she has regular body rather an athlete body. Her clothes might be deceiving.

  • 57 james589 // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:49 AM

    @Joe Sophistication

It gets a fair bit of stick, but having lived here all my life (save my 3 most formative years at uni in Newcastle) , gotta say I kind of love the place. Some areas of great beauty and many hidden gems. There’s only a handful of places I’d swap it for.

Also, I agree with @51… Ultimately someone has to make your shirts so I’m not sure as there’s as much freedom in the choice of sportswear manufacturer compared to choosing a payday lender as a sponsor. They make disgusting amounts of money off society’s most vulnerable by lending them more than they can afford to borrow when no one else will. It’s not right and I for one am glad than fans and players can try to take a stance against it. Just wonder how replica shirt sales are going this year compared to usual, and how much of that is attributable to Wonga.

Of course all the club need to do is sign someone and then all of these non-stories filling the void would disappear…

  • 58 manxpie // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:50 AM

well yeah jimmy but its gone on for aslong as us or our earliest ancestors
the saying is “business is business!” and that is wat it is and only ever will be
bolton turned down there payday loan sponser from fan unrest but unless they sport a charity or a very moral company logo (there aren’t many)then there not really changing much
think of all the clubs with betting companies there was a report not long ago that in streets around poor areas had up to 5 betting shops taking over failed business’s but not such uproar there!
as i say i find it funny how people pick there morals
    where all bloody hypocrites lol

  • 59 james589 // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:54 AM

See what you’re saying manx but there’s a shed load of companies out there whose operations are more ethical than Wonga’s and I for one would much rather see Virgin Money on the front of our shirts than Wonga… Though if u had my way it’d still be Newcy Brown haha

  • 60 Sazzer // Jul 16, 2013 at 12:55 AM

We require some good news on signings this week to lighten the mood. Joe Kinnear must be trying to get decent players in to prove everyone is wrong about him if nothing else.
He must realise by virtue of his various rantings that he has set himself up for a big fall if no one of high calibre and enhancing our first team comes in.
    I’m remaining optimistic.

If true – not much of a moral crusade (possibly poor choice of wording), when the Cisse is happy to take his pay check at the end of the week, part of it, made up of the ill gotten gains by a legalised loan shark. I’d have a lot more respect for the bloke if he just came out and said I want to play for a better team….

  • 99 Offkey // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:05 AM

Peaco – You would have more respect for Cisse if he were to lie about his religious/personal beliefs and just leave the club…….sounds strange.

  • 100 Ian Toon // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:18 AM

Good Morning – with offensive signings the priority were being linked by The Times with defenders.

Cheikhou Kouyate who will be receiving a Belgian passport this week
M’ Bengue the Toulouse / Senegal left back.

We’ve been linked before so could have legs.

@84 manx you forgot the pocket rocket Steve Joughin,I raced against him 🙂
Kennaugh could win the tour one day;)

Offkey – you’ve missed my point entirely (possibly because it wasn’t clearly presented – apologies). The point that I was trying to make is that given MA’s propensity for allocating specific incomes for specific purposes; it is probable that a percentage of Cisse’s wage is built-up from the sponsorship income from Wonga. I subsequently implied that Cisse’s religious beliefs did not prevent him from accepting all of his fifty grand every week. Accordingly, my suspicion is that rather than genuinely having an issue with money lenders per se (the contradictory behaviour with respect to the virgin money sponsorhip has already been referenced by others), it would seem (assuming reports to be true) that Cisse is actually angling for a move away, and if that is the case, I would have more respect for him if he was honest about wanting to leave, rather than using a spurious excuse of ‘religious beliefs’.

I hope that my explanation no longer ‘sounds strange’. Nevertheless, glad to generate a discussion – that’s what this place is for isn’t it?

I think this is how our team may look like next season !!!

  • 104 derekm // Jul 16, 2013 at 4:02 PM

surely the club are simply training Cisse on his own as he is within Ramadan, and that the extremely strenuous regime instigated on players returning from the summer break would be too much for a player that is fasting? Remember how appalling Demba Ba was until the fasting finished, and then having regained fitness he went on
scoring spree? Could it just be that the club are doing something sensible ( I know, I know ) with regard to this players pre-season on a single basis?

  • 105 stretchintoon // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:52 PM

bye bye cisse & good ridance

  • 106 chuck // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:48 AM

IMO there should be an alternative where he doesn’t have to wear the logo, or better yet dump this loanshark operation (we had a perfectly good contract with money, ( though also a bit dodgy)
It’s embarrassing to have our team advertising such a low life organisation, but I guess Ashley will do anything for a buck and his own cheapass organisation Sports Direct is not that much better.
