We were very surprised to read in the Shields Gazette tonight hat Papiss Cisse’s Newcastle future is said to be in the balance, and there have been other similar headlines over the last week or so.
Papiss Cisse – still in negotiations with Newcastle
Papiss is in dispute with Newcastle over wearing the Wonga insignia on his Newcastle shirt and training gear.
But this is some of what happens when the club sign up with Wonga.com on a four year deal, when the sponsor is hardly a well respected business in the UK, and charge phenomenal interest rates on pay-day loans to the very people who cannot afford them.
Under Sharia law, Muslims must not benefit from lending money to others, so in effect interest is prohibited for Muslims.
In the worst case for Newcastle, Cisse will not wear the Wonga insignia, and will either wear nothing on his shirt and training gear – or Cisse has offered to wear some Charity insignia instead of the Wonga signs.
The news is that Cisse is still talking to Newcastle, and the club is supposed to have met with the PFA today, and we assume that meeting went ahead.
And there is a precedent here, in that Frederic Kanoute, while at Sevilla refused to wear a strip bearing the name of the club sponsor 888.com, a gambling website, and initially Kanoute wore a blank wear the insignia should have been.
But he was then persuaded by his club that by wearing the insignia he wasn’t necessarily supporting betting – and he started to wear the sponsor insignia.
It certainly didn’t end up in Kanoute leaving Sevilla, so we are hoping the news that Cisse’s career at Newcastle is in danger, is simply an over-reach in the press.
Newcastle should be bringing in some new top strikers this summer, and not losing the best striker we have at the moment.

Comment #90We require some good news on signings this week to lighten the mood. Joe Kinnear must be trying to get decent players in to prove everyone is wrong about him if nothing else.
He must realise by virtue of his various rantings that he has set himself up for a big fall if no one of high calibre and enhancing our first team comes in.
I’m remaining optimistic.

Comment #98If true – not much of a moral crusade (possibly poor choice of wording), when the Cisse is happy to take his pay check at the end of the week, part of it, made up of the ill gotten gains by a legalised loan shark. I’d have a lot more respect for the bloke if he just came out and said I want to play for a better team….

Comment #99Peaco – You would have more respect for Cisse if he were to lie about his religious/personal beliefs and just leave the club…….sounds strange.

Comment #100Good Morning – with offensive signings the priority were being linked by The Times with defenders.
Cheikhou Kouyate who will be receiving a Belgian passport this week
And
M’ Bengue the Toulouse / Senegal left back.
We’ve been linked before so could have legs.

Comment #102Offkey – you’ve missed my point entirely (possibly because it wasn’t clearly presented – apologies). The point that I was trying to make is that given MA’s propensity for allocating specific incomes for specific purposes; it is probable that a percentage of Cisse’s wage is built-up from the sponsorship income from Wonga. I subsequently implied that Cisse’s religious beliefs did not prevent him from accepting all of his fifty grand every week. Accordingly, my suspicion is that rather than genuinely having an issue with money lenders per se (the contradictory behaviour with respect to the virgin money sponsorhip has already been referenced by others), it would seem (assuming reports to be true) that Cisse is actually angling for a move away, and if that is the case, I would have more respect for him if he was honest about wanting to leave, rather than using a spurious excuse of ‘religious beliefs’.
I hope that my explanation no longer ‘sounds strange’. Nevertheless, glad to generate a discussion – that’s what this place is for isn’t it?

Comment #104surely the club are simply training Cisse on his own as he is within Ramadan, and that the extremely strenuous regime instigated on players returning from the summer break would be too much for a player that is fasting? Remember how appalling Demba Ba was until the fasting finished, and then having regained fitness he went on
scoring spree? Could it just be that the club are doing something sensible ( I know, I know ) with regard to this players pre-season on a single basis?

Comment #106IMO there should be an alternative where he doesn’t have to wear the logo, or better yet dump this loanshark operation (we had a perfectly good contract with money, ( though also a bit dodgy)
It’s embarrassing to have our team advertising such a low life organisation, but I guess Ashley will do anything for a buck and his own cheapass organisation Sports Direct is not that much better.
