New French arrival, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who was captain of Montpellier when they won the French League title for the first time in 2012, will captain Newcastle United tonight at Motherwell.

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini just returned to training yesterday, three days early, and the versatile French defender will captain Newcastle in the absence of Fab, in the first pre-season game tonight at Scottish Premier League runners-up Motherwell.

Sissoko, Anita, Sammy Ameobi and Gabby Obertan are also in the starting line-up and youngsters James Tavernier and Paul Dummett, who did so well at St. Mirren on loan last season, also start and get a chance to impress Alan Pardew.

Local teenagers Remie Streete from South Shields, and Adam Campbell from North Shields are both on the bench for tonight’s game.

Teams:

Motherwell (4-4-2): Lee Hollis; Adam Cummins, Simon Ramsden, Shaun Hutchinson, Stevie Hammell; Stuart Carswell, Paul Lawson, Keith Lasley, Iain Vigurs; Bob McHugh, Trialist
Substitutes: Gunnar Nielsen, Euan Murray, Fraser Kerr, Zaine Francis-Angol, Lee Erwin, James McFadden, Craig Moore

Newcastle United (4-2-3-1): Rob Elliot; James Tavernier, Mike Williamson, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (c), Paul Dummett; Vurnon Anita, Moussa Sissoko; Gabriel Obertan, Haris Vuckic, Sammy Ameobi; Yoan Gouffran
Substitutes: Jak Alnwick, Shane Ferguson, Remie Streete Steven Taylor, Mehdi Abeid, Michael Richardson, Romain Amalfitano, Sylvain Marveaux, Adam Campbell

Hope Vuckic can benefit most from our new fitness buff’s knowledge. Think he can still make it and I enjoy watching languid type players who are able to play the game at their own pace yet still find space – has the best long strike in our team, too.

  • 35 Mr Funk // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:19 PM

Vuckic almost lashed home a third on 16 mins after Obertan’s cross but opted for power and it was smashed wide

Obertan and cross! in the same sentence!!!!

  • 36 Bring Back Laurent Robert // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:20 PM

That was a slick goal. Tav has good ability on the ball, just couldn’t cope defensively, at times, when he had the opportunity last season.

  • 60 toonking // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:29 PM

    DANGER
    a word of warning
this team doesn’t have many from the starting 11
if we get a very good result cashley might well see the perfect chance to not spend very much on signings

  • 61 Indian Magpie // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:29 PM

    Norcal

    How?

  • 62 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:31 PM

    Kevy

If we get excited at a good result, we might get annoyed at a bad result, when in reality this is only a pre-season friendly, the result doesn’t really matter.

It’s a great chance for some youngsters and fringe players to stake their claim for next season, but other than that, it’s just a run out for the lads.

  • 63 89Norcal // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:31 PM

No Marveaux, conceded a goal, and you still haven’t type-shouted pardew out.

  • 69 Bring Back Laurent Robert // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:33 PM

    toonking

I know we’re a slipshod set-up, but I don’t think in reality MA flippantly bases decisions like that on an opening friendly. Wheels will already be in motion.

  • 70 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:34 PM

    Kevy

I understand why we’re excited for the first game of pre season but we shouldn’t be overly concerned about the result.

  • 71 Guj NUFC // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:35 PM

looking at our first 3 home games West Ham Fulham and Hull, good chance to start the season on a high after probably getting mauled at city lol

If (big if) we sign 2 first team STs the likelihood of Campbell being anywhere near the first team is very slim.

I think a loan this season will be good for him

  • 77 luke.r // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:38 PM

the result doesn’t matter but we need a win for the players to push on and get confidence up. Would be nice if the team were able to put a smile on our faces for once in this gloomy summer!

  • 82 Rooster // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:44 PM

  • 83 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:45 PM

I’m not saying he’s a bad player, but if we do sign a couple of STs he’s going to be down the pecking order.

A loan move might be best for his confidence and development.

  • 89 Rooster // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:51 PM

I understand were you are coming from concerning Campbell but AP has been quoted saying he is going nowhere, I am pleased with that I want to see the lad in a toon shirt playing, even if we sign a striker he needs more quality playing time, Shola needs to try a different club (please)

Ruddy he wont let us down, scud missile job.

  • 96 moonraker // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:55 PM

The press silence on transfers is embarrassing! If it wasn’t for the fact that we have JFK I would think they were working behind the scenes but I now think they are apathetic and basically incompetent ! but I live in hope of being proved wrong!!!!

  • 97 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:56 PM

I’d rather see us sign a 20 something ready made ST than have Campbell around the squad next season because I’m not so sure he is ready for the first team, even though he is a very good player.

  • 98 Thump // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:57 PM

    3-1, eh? I’ll take that.

  • 99 Toon_Tom // Jul 16, 2013 at 7:59 PM

Unless you go to many many reserve games or have genuine contacts with the club it is nearly impossible to judge any of our youngsters.

Until we see them in a fully competitive match, where they will obviously strive to play their best football, will we know for sure who has the skill, tenacity, guts and heart to warrant a place in the squad!

  • 100 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:01 PM

    Toon Tom

Seeing players play well in the reserves doesn’t necessarily mean they are good enough for the first team. Obertan scored a hat trick in a reserve game and he is rubbish.

  • 101 toonthompson // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:03 PM

    vuckic and Williamson off

    marveux and taylor on

  • 102 Toon_Tom // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:04 PM

    Ruddy – that’s my point ^

Only when they play a competitive match we will know what they’re capable of.

Regarding the reserves – some loyalists make an effort to watch all/most games, so I would listen to their views regarding our youth team!

I really do like Vuckic would love it if he could stay fit and get a proper run in the team as he would be a perfect no 10

Reminds me of a player with the grace of Van Persie and Berbatov because they dont have pace as well remember Van persie was a total sick note who hardly played in 7 seasons and then they worked on him to be fit for the last 3 seasons maybe our new fitness coach can get to the bottom of his issues!?

Gutted to miss the game tonight finished work late but going to try and get to the St Mirren and Kilmarnock games!!

I’m aware that Campbell is a good player, but being a good player and being able to play PL footy are two completely different things.

I just think it would be more beneficial if Campbell got competitive football at a lower level and come back with match time under his belt in better stead to challenge for a first team place.

This guy keeps this up and santon/haidara will both be losing there spots, spurs 1-1

  • 137 santonthenewmaldini // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:38 PM

Would love us to give Vuckic, Anita, Marveux and Campbell a proper go this season Jonas , Obertan and Tiote have had their chance last season and were shite so they need to warm the bench!

Quite like Dummett as well but think Haidara and Santon are ahead of him shame as hes local and likes to attack!

Tav is really good going forward is there anyway he could be converted to a right winger? haha

  • 139 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:44 PM

Glad to hear Dummy has had a good game, he’s familiar with Scottish opposition so good to see his experience of SPL paying off, maybe he can keep the other two on their toes, but he’ll need to do it consistently.

As for Vuckic, I’d just be delighted if he stayed fit for an entire season, even if he had a shocker.

  • 140 Ibizatoon // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:45 PM

Ruddy…Talk about lower the bar :) You don’t have to play well, just play ffs!

  • 141 Ibizatoon // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:45 PM

or lowering the bar…if you’re in to your tenses

  • 142 SeanNufc87 // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:46 PM

If working up in Scotland atm and a bloke in the bar keeps looking at his phone and shouting fcuk sake lads come on! They’re only a bunch of kids! He has also seemed pleased twice now… I think hes a Motherwell fan in Dunfermline.

  • 143 SeanNufc87 // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:47 PM

Im working is Scotland is what I meant.

    Ibiza

You know how tense I get about tenses :P

Well I’ve high standards…except when it comes to Vuckic, the lads has been a walking sick note for 5 years!

  • 149 Ibizatoon // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:49 PM

Sean… Seemed quite specific for an “if” scenario :)

    Go ask him!

  • 150 Rake // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:50 PM

Dummet looked good against Brighton sounds like he’s having a stormer!

  • 151 Bring Back Laurent Robert // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:52 PM

“Support the team, not the regime….”. Yes, very intelligent, remind me who bought the players playing for the team? Puddings.

  • 152 Ibizatoon // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:52 PM

    Ruddy….Boy do I!

I get what you’re saying, it’s all about small steps. Perhaps we should shoot for staying fit a whole month first of all?

lowfell…Jail for ashley a mackem? Hmmm…I think not. A d*ck however?!? Only joking.

  • 153 Belfast // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:52 PM

    We’re still unbeaten this season

    Get in !!

  • 154 SeanNufc87 // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:52 PM

    Ibiza

Glad to see my fellow fence percher back hope your well.

Nah I have a nasty habit of getting swung for in Scotland, and MOST of them weren’t my fault!

  • 155 Ibizatoon // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:53 PM

Laurent…Whilst a valid point, if people feel the need to let their voices be heard, I have no objections to banners like that.

  • 156 JFK junior // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:54 PM

    New signings???

    Who needs New signings?

Vuckic is LIKE a new signing!!!

    (just for you Belfast!..) ha

  • 157 Ibizatoon // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:55 PM

Belfast… Ha ha. Long may it continue.

Sean…Very well thank you, hope you are too. Is that a nasty habit or is that just what happens in Scotland? Go on, don’t be a wimp ;)

  • 158 Toon_Tom // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:55 PM

BB Lauren Robert – yes the board, directors and chiefs brought in those players – but they have also made some crazy decisions, strange recruitment (JFK) and continue to play the silent game with us.

My CEO at work has thrown money in to hire contractors, internal staff and other reps – some shocking employees have arrived, therefore even tho he has financed such deals, this does not make him untouchable.

  • 159 Belfast // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:58 PM

You just know for a fact somebody will come on here tonight or tomorrow and say we don’t need to sign anybody because we looked good against motherwell. lol

Vuckic is like a new signing etc etc

  • 160 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2013 at 8:59 PM

    is belfast still chuntering on?

    Whats occurring then?

  • 161 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:00 PM

If someone is going to slate fans for venting their anger at Ashley then I am afraid they need their head shook.

  • 162 kevymartins // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:01 PM

@Belfast but motherwell beat celtic who are equivalent to the likes of everton so we done amazing beating such a great quality team like motherwell, pfff

  • 163 Bring Back Laurent Robert // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:01 PM

I’m not saying they’re untouchable, just don’t make banners because they rhyme, without thinking about what you’re saying.

Imagine how confounded sects of supporters would be, if we won one of the cups this season, with a team and set-up put together by this ‘regime’ – they’d look dafter than they already do.

  • 164 Ibizatoon // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:02 PM

Tsunki..Can’t really expect more from him can we? Makes a change from the rattling of that single brain cell.

  • 165 Ruddy Marveaux-lous // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:02 PM

    Kevy

Hope you’re joking about Celtic being the equivalent of Everton haha

p.s i think cabaye will go and i think that vuckic could be amazing with ben arfa sissoko and santon next to him

  • 168 low fell mag // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:05 PM

I very much doubt that Belfast, but on the other hand, the majority of the lads playing tonight ,shows that we have a decent bench and will be pushing for a first team place.

  • 169 SeanNufc87 // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:06 PM

Im serious mate! Its a genuine concern lol. His mate has confirmed it by chanting Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle!
