New French arrival, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, who was captain of Montpellier when they won the French League title for the first time in 2012, will captain Newcastle United tonight at Motherwell.

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini just returned to training yesterday, three days early, and the versatile French defender will captain Newcastle in the absence of Fab, in the first pre-season game tonight at Scottish Premier League runners-up Motherwell.

Sissoko, Anita, Sammy Ameobi and Gabby Obertan are also in the starting line-up and youngsters James Tavernier and Paul Dummett, who did so well at St. Mirren on loan last season, also start and get a chance to impress Alan Pardew.

Local teenagers Remie Streete from South Shields, and Adam Campbell from North Shields are both on the bench for tonight’s game.

Motherwell (4-4-2): Lee Hollis; Adam Cummins, Simon Ramsden, Shaun Hutchinson, Stevie Hammell; Stuart Carswell, Paul Lawson, Keith Lasley, Iain Vigurs; Bob McHugh, Trialist
Substitutes: Gunnar Nielsen, Euan Murray, Fraser Kerr, Zaine Francis-Angol, Lee Erwin, James McFadden, Craig Moore

Newcastle United (4-2-3-1): Rob Elliot; James Tavernier, Mike Williamson, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (c), Paul Dummett; Vurnon Anita, Moussa Sissoko; Gabriel Obertan, Haris Vuckic, Sammy Ameobi; Yoan Gouffran
Substitutes: Jak Alnwick, Shane Ferguson, Remie Streete Steven Taylor, Mehdi Abeid, Michael Richardson, Romain Amalfitano, Sylvain Marveaux, Adam Campbell

Gouffran broke free to force Hollis into a save with his feet and Vuckic had the simple task to tap into the empty net

Hope Vuckic can benefit most from our new fitness buff’s knowledge. Think he can still make it and I enjoy watching languid type players who are able to play the game at their own pace yet still find space – has the best long strike in our team, too.

That was a slick goal. Tav has good ability on the ball, just couldn’t cope defensively, at times, when he had the opportunity last season.
