nice to see vuckic and gouffran on same wavelength

  • 3 scout // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:20 PM

    Good win

  • 4 WWYCD // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:22 PM

I have decided to pin all my hopes for this season on Vuckic and once he crippled himself again I shall go back to crying in a corner

  • 5 Tsunki // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:24 PM

I think that given the attacking style and panache of this performance we should be on course for having 6 rammed past us first day of the season.

  • 6 Toon_Tom // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:25 PM

WWYCD – deal, sounds like a plan ;)

  • 7 AaranD // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:26 PM

Few of the young lads looked alright tonight and its good to get off to a winning start against a half decent Motherwell side.
Hopefully build on this and have an unbeaten pre-season and be brimming with confidence for the game against City!!

  • 8 santonthenewmaldini // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:27 PM

Would love Vuckic to come good even more than signing a new player he has the potential to be an entertainer

Also like Gouffran up front on his own he would make a 4 2 31 formation work more than Cisse would as he can hold it up and bring others into the game and he knows the offside rule as well!!

  • 9 Belfast // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:27 PM

    Vuckic the chocolate man.

  • 10 Jail for Ashley // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:28 PM

Nice to be back home so I can listen to total sport as it gives a good gauge on the mood of the fans and Ando seems to talk a lot of sense, well it seems like the majority of people are pi$$ed off with the way Mike Ashley is doing things and if they try and pull the ‘well the signings made in January were for now’ then it’s simply not good enough as they have admitted those signings should have been made the summer before and for all those telling people to calm down the window has only been open two weeks please remember the season kicks off against Man City in four weeks time.

  • 11 Yohan Kebab // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:28 PM

i would give up signing any players just so see all of our current player stay and be fit for the new season

  • 12 WWYCD // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:29 PM

Its something to be hopeful of until Vuckic glass structure gives way again I suppose ;) no signings to get excited about

  • 13 SupaToonKid // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Vuckic – the Dutchman? Yet another football pundit with poor knowledge of the game tut tut.

But yes it looks like with the inevitability of not many or no signings at all, we will have to hope Vuckic sustains fitness as he looks a real talent. Him and Gouffran link up well.

Still praying for a LW, CF (+ a Shola replacement/upgrade) & RW though however unlikely

  • 14 Jail for Ashley // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:34 PM

Can anybody give any thoughts on to why Abeid and Alfalmaltino were on the bench considering they have been told they can leave the club.

  • 15 WWYCD // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:36 PM

Better than having two empty slots?

  • 16 scout // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:36 PM

Making up the numbers mate, still on the payroll

  • 17 Toon_Tom // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:37 PM

  • 19 Toon1978 // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:40 PM

I liked the Football played for the second goal….good stuff!

  • 20 Sazzer // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:43 PM

Nice to see Vuckic finding space behind opponents midfield.

With this new fitness coach onboard maybe Vuckic will be just like a new purple signing ;P

  • 21 ToonDanno // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:46 PM

What going on? None of you are complaining :o

  • 22 AMEOBI // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:47 PM

Vuckic I really think this is his season, looked great on them clips, Cabaye out Vuckic in the CF role? Sounds delicious

  • 23 Toon1978 // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:48 PM

We won lol. We really need a few players though which i feel we will do. Couple of strikers and a winger would be good…….ooh and S.D.Jong hahaha.

  • 24 jeff // Jul 16, 2013 at 9:49 PM

Yep. No surprises with the line-up, exactly as my Dad told me it would be.

  • 39 geordie157 // Jul 16, 2013 at 10:17 PM

Good to see vuckic back, fingers crossed he can stay injury free now.
I do think we’ll get a striker in but think it will be a younger striker maybe saivet or Ben yedder.

  • 40 JFK junior // Jul 16, 2013 at 10:19 PM

  • 45 toon kk // Jul 16, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Great for the lads to get a win tonight. But I can’t see any first team signings coming in, maybe in jan if we’re struggling.

  • 46 Yohan Kebab // Jul 16, 2013 at 10:31 PM

i know hes just like a cross between rvp and bergkamp but no need to call vuckic a dutchman like!

  • 47 joeinthecheapseats // Jul 16, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Got to have a few before the weekend so they can get used to each other.
Two centre forwards please and anything else is a bonus.

  • 49 jimiley // Jul 16, 2013 at 10:35 PM

This win proves we do not really need any new signings. The squad is good enough for mid table. And Big Mike wants no more than that. We cannot win the league and we do not want to be in Europe so things are fine as they are. Keep the faith in Mike, Joe, Percy and the boys.

I see Pards is still using his favourite 4-2-3-1 lol.

Fell sorry for Jak Alnwick, everyone got game time apart from him.

Good win though and we scored 4 goals :)

  • 54 jimiley // Jul 16, 2013 at 10:41 PM

A goal a game and the odd shut out should get us to safety. Do we really want to watch players at NUFC going for the title but earning 350K a week eg Tevez and Toure. Not for me. Mid table obscurity for evermore is just fine. Silverware? thats a spoon innit?

  • 55 cbtoon82 // Jul 16, 2013 at 10:42 PM

I’ve been following the blog for a good few years, have only posted a few times and not in a very long time so go easy on me!!!

Good positive result tonight, surely pre season is all about fitness levels and confidence, and in out case, hopefully building better tactics than we had last season.

Players were played in position, which is definitely a positive from last season. Since I only got twitter commentary I can’t be sure but it seemed like we played at a higher tempo.
I hope to god Pardew takes note because last seasons tactics were dull and slow and did not play to our strengths.

Also not sure if this has been said jn previous posts but does anyone think if dummett does a good enough job in pre season that he and haidara should fight it out for LB? Yea I know they are young, if your old enough your good enough blah blah. And santon and debuchy to fight it out for RB???

At least they are where am at just now!!

  • 64 jimmysmith // Jul 16, 2013 at 10:52 PM

That argument about upper mid table being the most cost effective place to be for Ashley, and showing no real ambition beyond that being made all that much easier by a large fan base that can’t bear not to support the club no matter what, is gathering momentum with each passing day without signings, and each pre season game played against modest opposition.

  • 65 lesh // Jul 16, 2013 at 10:57 PM

Tads @60…… That’s cruel (not Krul you understand)….. Cisco.

Nah, hang on, Xisco’s not Krul is he? Or is Krul Cruel?

So who got injured and how was our new signings?

…has “the Fisher King” been spotted yet? ; lol

  • 67 potski // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:05 PM

I think Dummett and Haidara are still too inexperienced to play LB as first choice. I see no reason not to start with Santon. And it’s quite possible MYM would be second choice.

I’m not convinced playing him out of position in midfield is a great idea. Especially if that means MYM regularly missing out as CB.

    Back four:
    Debuchy – MYM – Collo – Santon

  • 68 gonufc (not Arf' bad) // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:13 PM

    @Yohan Kebab – are you pre-empting Newcastle’s P.R. Department?

“Though we didn’t make any big signings, the best signings we could make was keeping our top players……”

    Again. And Again. And Again.

Are we just giving up on any (semi) ambitious signings? (Again?)

  • 69 Jamiemac // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:13 PM

@GFN_France: Despite not being directly French football related, Senegalese man Cheikhou Kouyaté has offers from Southampton and Newcastle. #NUFC #Saints

  • 70 pawl250 // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:14 PM

If am honest I am starting to doubt Danno and his Remy, I was skeptical to begin with but now he just comes to sort of add smoke without the fire then any questions hes off!

It just seems odd too me…. starting to think he is just winding people up.

Good win, EVEN if it is just Motherwell its promising seeing likes of Sissoko, Mbiwa getting a pre season.

Looking forward to seeing Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Cisse, Colo return.

Hopefully we can take a good run of confidence into the Man City game, so any games we win from now until the is a bonus for me. Winning Man City will send us on a flyer!

  • 71 JG83 // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:14 PM

I agree with you on the pre season is about fitness and confidence. It’s good to see the lads gel well.

Hopefully if drummet does come through in this pre season it gives pardew another defensive selection problem. Be good to see us having good quality backup for every position across the back. Something I haven’t seen in a long time.

  • 72 Big Pappa Cissé // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:15 PM

Looks like everyone else is spending that big fat £ 60 million cheque except us :(

  • 73 cbtoon82 // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:18 PM

@ Potski I realise they are inexperienced, but I’m all for giving these kids the experience they need. Possibly not right away, but give them a run in the cups see how they go and if they do well then I don’t see why they can’t fight it out for LB. we have no RB cover remember. Plus I think santon would do much better on the right.

Colo and MYM are a given at CB though. I love Taylor but he makes me nervous…

  • 74 jimmysmith // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:19 PM

Sammy is a top talent, but too languid and inconsistent to be a top EPL player as is. Very few players are the complete package and it wouldn’t surprise at all if not a single one of our young fringe first team players are able to step up. We are hearing the same noises about Campbell this season that we did about Sammy last, and now about Vuckic again, after one pre season game.

Last situation to be counting any chickens.

  • 75 pawl250 // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:19 PM

For me Kouyate would suit Southampton, arguable first teamer as opposed to back up at Newcastle… if true.

Its my argument for anyone mentioning Alderwield, in a World Cup year a first team starter will hardly want to bench warm for the season.

We need a centre back in the mold of Haidara willing to bide his time, with a very promising future.

Kouyate does not really scream that to me.

Before people say I do not want Alderwield blah blah, I would love him I am just being realistic. Why come to sit on a bench….. especially in an important year for any international level player.

  • 76 cbtoon82 // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:23 PM

JG83 I hope dummett comes through too, from what I’ve heard he was fantastic on loan last season. Good again tonight, I know one match means nothing, but it is a start. Everyone needs to start somewhere, young players need game time, but they also need a manager who has the balls to show confidence in them.

  • 77 pawl250 // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:26 PM

I can never say I have heard any hype over Sammy. I feel anyone who has seen him always said he is technically gifted but perhaps not at the level or consistent enough to do it at PL level.

Campbell, gets alot of attention from winning awards and receiving praise. Likes of Shearer, Beardsley, and even other pundits have heard the hype. He wins awards, as does Street, it suggests he has what it takes to become a future player, only time will tell.

As for Vuckic, always felt he was a gifted player, he has great vision, albeit albeit slow. I feel injuries have restricted him reaching or showing his full potential. Its inevitable he will be injured again this season.

  • 78 JG83 // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:27 PM

The thing with fullbacks and wingers you generally get away with playing young inexperienced players if you have good players centrally which we do. I think newcastle sonetimes hold youth back to much and they miss senior team game time which is needed.

If you look at all the top players, most of these were first team when they were 18-19 years old.

  • 79 jimmysmith // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:30 PM

I think that’s very true, we can only expect to sign players who are considered ready made first teamers , or young guys with potential who aren’t quite ready to play a front line role. It’s quite a precarious balance and I think Anita for example and to a lesser extent Marv, might be somewhat dissatisfied with their lot at the Toon, and if not, we’ve done really well to keep them onside.

  • 80 t00ntime // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:33 PM

problem is with Vuckic and Inman. They both want a CAM/CF role. And Cabaye, HBA and Marv would all love that place too and if all 5 are on top form no way will the first 2 get a look in. If we play 4-2-3-1
    HBA- cabaye- ?

All we would really need is a top class LM (marv+gouff are avg. jonas is avg/bad) and a Good ST to give remy some competion+rest. Thats why i’d like Remy+bent. Remy LW cisse+bent can swap around.

also if playing a bad team we can go more attacking with a 433. tiote lies deap, cabaye+sissoko get freedom.

  • 81 cbtoon82 // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:36 PM

JG83 I totally agree, I think the club definitely holds back promising youth players. Campbell for instance was sitting on the bench last season and coming on for 2 mins at the end of the game. What was the point in that? Cisse was off form, no reason why you can’t gamble on the kid and give him 20 mins. A better example is Anita though, obviously he isn’t a youth player, but cabaye was off form most of the season, Anita played well when he he started or came on, yet he still didn’t get a game. It doesn’t make sense.

God I’m glad last season is over. If we play the same crappy football next season I dont think I can take much more haha!!

  • 82 mattyNUFC // Jul 16, 2013 at 11:37 PM

    Yes, it’s Slovenian

Haven’t commented in a long while. My thoughts on this summer thus far:

JFK – couldn’t have written it any better. but, he’s here. just hope he shuts up. Create a bit of maelstrom and voila! not so many people are calling for pards and his atrocious style of football to be gone…

If cabaye is leaving, well, I don’t mind so much. He’s a patchy player, even in his first season (remember the guthrie v cabaye debate when cabs was out injured for stretches?). The bottom line: He’s one of the best CMs we’ve had but he’s not a DM and pardew won’t change his ways, as proven by however many years of his managerial career. Cash-in, get Seim de Jong who will play in that ACM role and use the rest of the money on a proper left winger. Also think we need a FB. Debuchy and Santon are both inconsistent, Haidara is still young and could do a job, but we need another guy there to push them. Dare I say, in the danny simpson mold as pure back-up?

    My team, as is:

something tells me come 1st sept though, cisse won’t be here.

  • 83 toonaids // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:23 AM

i think we will sign two or three players. It may not be that bad that we haven’t signed anyone yet. Still plenty of time, i dont see why everyone has to rush in, we’ll get a decent player for a fraction of the price. I think its time someone from the youth set up steps up. Vuckic can be special, not too sure about campbell, same with sammy, probably in a few years time and ferguson maybe but i really dont think anyone else stands out.
