This Could be Newcastle’s Top Signing This Summer

4:57 pm, Tuesday, July 16th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 107 Comments

There’s some good news today being reported in the Daily Mail that Newcastle have been able to hire Performance Director Faye Downey as a fitness consultant for Newcastle in  the coming season.

faye downey

Faye Downey – fitness consultant for Newcastle this seoasn – that’s good

Faye is a top class strength and conditioning coach, and it seems that’s what is needed after Newcastle had one of their worst seasons last year for injuries in a long time, and it certainly didn’t help us in our struggles against relegation.

Downey helped the England rugby team prepare for their last two World Cups, and she’s also worked on fitness and conditioning with the Leicester Tigers and London Irish.

Faye has also trained British athletes before the Olympic Games in 2004 in Athens, so her expertise will hopefully not only make our players that much fitter, but also prevent the injuries we seemed to pick up all the time last season.

No news on how often she will be training with the squad , but maybe she’ll be there one day a week or something like that, but no news on those details as yet.

It will also help our own fitness coaches learn from one of the top people in their profession, so that’s also an added benefit to the club.

Newcastle will take on Motherwell tonight in our first pre-season game, and then the squad travels to Portugal tomorrow for a week’s training camp at the SC Braga facilities, and we’ll play Rio Ave and Saturday night, and on Tuesday night we play Pacos de Ferreira, before the squad returns to England the following day.

And Newcastle are also in the process of arranging an additional pre-season friendly with French club Lille, which is where we got both Yohan Cabaye and Mathieu Debuchy from over the last couple of years.

This is very good news about Newcastle hiring Faye Downey.

Comments welcome.

Cavani to PSG ! Looks like they wont be able to afford to get Cabaye now ha ha

Anyone a little worried about the Mackems ? They have made some shrewd signings plus Di Canio will have them fit and playing attacking football unlike our genius Pardew

  • 38 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 16, 2013 at 5:54 PM

John Tudor isn’t a troll. I just think he has “JFK disease”, also known as “verbal diarrhea”.

Relatively harmless but full of sh*t…

  • 39 JFK junior // Jul 16, 2013 at 5:54 PM

Santon – their New Italian lad is a good player, but other than that…who have they signed of any real quality?

More squad filler than anything else. Hopefully we will buy quality rather than quantity.

  • 40 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 16, 2013 at 5:55 PM

    I probably should have said…

“Relatively harmless, but sh*t keeps coming out…”

Messed up a perfectly good joke…

  • 41 John Tudor // Jul 16, 2013 at 5:55 PM

    much like you tds

  • 42 Slank // Jul 16, 2013 at 5:56 PM

    Santon @ 35

They are shrewd if they do well. They are foolish if they don’t do well.

  • 43 roblee7 // Jul 16, 2013 at 5:56 PM

Honestly…I can’t see us signing anyone unless someone like cisse or cabaye goes.would just be classic MA

  • 44 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 16, 2013 at 5:57 PM

Scumderland doing their usual thing of signing a dozen players and hoping a few of them are decent. When they start doing badly, they end up with 3 or 4 of them in the championship and on huge wages because nobody else wants them.

How badly must Di Canio think of their current squad if they’re signing so many players?!

  • 45 JFK junior // Jul 16, 2013 at 5:58 PM

Toodarnsarf – Is that their 9th signing?

  • 46 John Tudor // Jul 16, 2013 at 5:59 PM

just because i don’t agree with you on here you try to belittle me, i too have mates on here. please stop these futile tactics as i don’t like having to read your verbal cow dung neither

  • 47 Slank // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:00 PM

    TDS

QPR déjà vu all over again, perhaps?

  • 48 Bring Back Laurent Robert // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:01 PM

So Hooper to QPR and Cavani to PSG, so does that mean Remy and Gameiro are now free to be cast-off? That’s how normal clubs operate, buy a replacement then sell. Think we’ll see someone in by the weekend.

  • 49 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:01 PM

    Roblee
You ever come across our 3rd kit from the championship season???

  • 50 Slank // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:02 PM

    JFK

I think it is the 9th

  • 51 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:03 PM

    JFK junior

I think so. There will be a few more to go too I bet ya! Doesn’t take that much skill to sign a dozen decent players from foreign leagues…some of them are bound to cut it in the PL. Sadly for Scumderland, they’ll be demanding a transfer to a CL club next Summer!

Or maybe they’ll just disappear off to the UAE to escape them…

  • 52 John Tudor // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:04 PM

all signings are a gamble at least di cackio is getting some refreshed players in, regardless of them not being high quality ,the detractors thinking hmmm, bent now theres a big name.yes up till now we have brought in who.

  • 53 santonthenewmaldini // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:04 PM

    @jfkjunior

Yeah the italian lad is quality and the only real one i recognize but I bet most teams say that about our players when we sign them in fact most of our fans moan when we sign someone saying that they have never heard of them since Di Canio has come in they have set up a scouting network kind of like ours but focussing on Italian leagues

Sunderland were much better than us in the last game if they get players who happen to be good along with some of the better players they could finish above us quite easily IF we dont sign anyone and Pardew still tries to set us up defensively!

Although if we could get Remy and De Jong over the line with a young pacy winger along with this fitness bird then BOOM its on!!

  • 54 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:08 PM

    Slank

I’d love it if it was! The difference is that QPR signed experienced (i.e. past it) PL players and have them a huge last payday. Scumderland are at least getting some hungry players who want to prove themselves in the PL.

But how many of their signings had you heard of? Not many I bet…

  • 55 JFK junior // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:08 PM

Santon – I agree. We have work to do.

Do we have any updates on Remy, de jong, poss gameiro etc?

  • 56 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:10 PM

Blah…I made the mistake of starting to read John Tudor’s post again but got stuck halfway through, realised it was his and not going to bother finishing it…

I have no idea why people choose to make comments on a forum that are so damn hard to actually understand!

You think Sunderland would finish above us given a new season? I used to think so but our whole last season reeked of desperation, and I think everyone underperformed; and that’s relative to their careers and not just any 1 season wonder stuff.

With a good winger I doubt we would have to worry about Sunderland.

Feel bad for Jonas now  he even catches slag on twitter.

  • 60 ~Joke-innear~ // Jul 16, 2013 at 6:12 PM

Can she play down the wing? Can she bag us a lot of goals?

Great the club have attempted to alleviate a problen of ours with Injuries… but its about priorities… we need to resolve squad issues first.. then worry about everything else after..

TADS….its the only toon shirt from the last few years thats worth anywhere near that much to be honest! Even without the tags and without the patches and name and number, them shirts go for £70-£80. I’ve got a couple really old NUFC shirts from the 80′s on the site too and they’re not worth too much more than that 3rd shirt…I’m sure it was like a limited edition release or something, hence why they sell for so much. Got loadsa NUFC shirts on there like, most nowhere near the price of the Inter style one ;)
