There’s some good news today being reported in the Daily Mail that Newcastle have been able to hire Performance Director Faye Downey as a fitness consultant for Newcastle in the coming season.
Faye Downey – fitness consultant for Newcastle this seoasn – that’s good
Faye is a top class strength and conditioning coach, and it seems that’s what is needed after Newcastle had one of their worst seasons last year for injuries in a long time, and it certainly didn’t help us in our struggles against relegation.
Downey helped the England rugby team prepare for their last two World Cups, and she’s also worked on fitness and conditioning with the Leicester Tigers and London Irish.
Faye has also trained British athletes before the Olympic Games in 2004 in Athens, so her expertise will hopefully not only make our players that much fitter, but also prevent the injuries we seemed to pick up all the time last season.
No news on how often she will be training with the squad , but maybe she’ll be there one day a week or something like that, but no news on those details as yet.
It will also help our own fitness coaches learn from one of the top people in their profession, so that’s also an added benefit to the club.
Newcastle will take on Motherwell tonight in our first pre-season game, and then the squad travels to Portugal tomorrow for a week’s training camp at the SC Braga facilities, and we’ll play Rio Ave and Saturday night, and on Tuesday night we play Pacos de Ferreira, before the squad returns to England the following day.
And Newcastle are also in the process of arranging an additional pre-season friendly with French club Lille, which is where we got both Yohan Cabaye and Mathieu Debuchy from over the last couple of years.
This is very good news about Newcastle hiring Faye Downey.
