Newcastle Linked With Norwegian International

10:49 am, Wednesday, July 17th, 2013 by Ed Harrison · 277 Comments

There are reports in Norway today, that we have been alerted to by one of our Norwegian readers, Tor Magne Madsen, that Newcastle are looking into signing the 6’3″ Norwegian International goalkeeper Rune Jarstein

Rune Jarstein

Rune Jarstein – 28 year-old Norway International

The 28 year-old goalkeeper currently plays for Viking, and he has played 30 times for Norway, and could be the third choice goalkeeper brought in this summer to replace the departed Steve Harper, who joined Hull City a couple of days ago.

Rune has just one year left on his contract at Viking, so he could be brought in for a nominal fee this summer, and it would appear that Viking are willing to sell too, with the fee said to be around £250K – something Newcastle should be able to afford. :D

Rune has established himself as the Norwegian number one over the last three or four years, and has played well in the Norwegian league for ten years.

Rune can be very good, but is prone to making mistakes, when he lets his concentration lag, which is true for most goalkeepers, come to think of it.

Rune would probably be brought in as Newcastle’s number three goalkeeper, but we wonder where that would leave his career at International level, if he’s not playing regular first team football.

He has played 255 first team games for Odd Grenland, Rosenborg and Viking in the Tippeligaen over the last ten years.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Good to see the striker hunts going well!

    Straight swap, Rooney for Cabaye?

  • 3 Levi // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:51 AM

To every one who thinks right back cover is a priority please look at this article. I know Anita isn’t great 1st choice right back but he is excellent cover.

what was good to see yesterday is dummett has a good cross and vuckic links midfield and attack well, two things we were vitally lacking last season

hopefully pardew sees that and takes note when buying new players

for what its worth i think if we sign siem de jong haris wont get a look in :(

  • 5 rainrix // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Guys looks like chelsea are going to beat us to rooney. The bid has been rejected but its only a matter of time. Lost out to another target ffs. This bloody regime eh?

  • 6 richyg01 // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:52 AM

    @3

I think we seem to be covered pretty well in both wing back positions.

We need wingers and strikers IMO.

  • 7 richyg01 // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:53 AM

    @5

    LOL.

On SSN, ManUre fans are wanting £20M + Mata, which would do us a favour as they wouldnt be poaching Cabs then!

  • 8 wolfshead@toon // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:55 AM

    rain

their bid has been rejected is joe trying to hijack the deal :-)

  • 9 Levi // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:55 AM

    Richyg01

totally agree. definatly not a bleeding goalkeeper

  • 10 RonVanDam // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:55 AM

I dont understand why we are linked with 29 year strikers when we can get better younger players who are about to peak cheaper

  • 11 Yohan Kebab // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:55 AM

oh and vuckic has a good corner deliveryy!

  • 12 Transfer Sage // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:56 AM

from previous….i dont think we have a good team. we have some nice technical players but thats only one aspect. As an individual the decision making is poor from most, fitness is poor, strength is poor…etc etc

I think the technical side is overplayed in football…its one aspect but the best players are technical and smart….our players dont seem to be able to think and adapt in a game.

  • 13 viv // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:57 AM

We certainly need another goalie, as Elliot is not up to the level of the Premier league. More league one standard.

  • 14 RonVanDam // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:57 AM

    @3

We wont be able to afford Rooneys wages. 250k per week would basically cover the wages of our whole squad

  • 15 rainrix // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:57 AM

Wolfshead…. Joe the sly hound, hear he’s readying a 500K opening bid, plus obertan going back to man u. Cant wait wayne ronny what an opening signing!

  • 16 Levi // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:58 AM

haha mata and 20mil. If i was Chelsea i wouldn’t swap mata for Rooney let alone mata and 20m

  • 17 Roy Morten // Jul 17, 2013 at 10:59 AM

I pray to GOD that we don’t sign Jarstein. Would be my worst nightmare come true.

  • 19 Lowesy // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:02 AM

i’ve seen that liverpool are in for Shaqiri, wasn’t he a target for us at one time?
funnily enough, so was Christian Erikson. Shouldn’t we be buying these players when we target them? There was another player, Barcelona are bidding for him, a midfielder I think, can’t remember their name though. But it was the same deal.
also, why are we in for another keeper? Krul, Elliot, Alnwick?

  • 20 Transfer Sage // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:02 AM

    viv

i think that elliott is good enough as back up….we wont get a better keeper willing to sit on the bench.

  • 21 JFK junior // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:03 AM

    We won’t get Wayne Ronny!

But…if man utd sell him to Chelsea, cash plus Juan Mata, then we sell them Cabaye for Mata, straight swap.

    Seems pretty straight forward…! :-)

Geordiemark has the measure of Mr Cashley. A failed pro squash player, a ruthless arrogant person, with no respect for anyone, and least of all the Geordie nation “The Toon” .

Joe Kinnear’s appointment, what an absolute joke and an embarrassment to NUFC ( Cashley’s warped sense of revenge) He demeans our intelligence by purporting this to be anything other than extracting the P. MA will never forgive us for the way we rightfully embarrassed him in front of his family at St James Park, and he will try and extract his revenge, drop by drop on the Toon Fans. Speak to Mr Whelan about Cashley, talk to the city about Cashley “A nasty, nasty piece of work”

Who of us believes MAs team did not carry out due diligence when he bought NUFC. He knew exactly what the books were telling him. He chose not to refute the stories of a slip up, to court favour. “Stand with the lads on the terraces, act like one of the loyal supporters” is that sheeps I can smell,no its Bulls

He hires” yes men” like Parsnip (last chance saloon). C.H. told him the truth sacked, K.K. told him the truth sacked, I would just love it for Kev to tell everything about this carpetbagger, but he is locked into a compromise agreement. A.S. told him the truth, contract terminated, Als bar closed.
You will run out of luck one day Ash.

Now the transfer saga all over again. Darren Bent not required by Aston Villa who nearly ended up in the Championship!!!!!!!!! A TOON TARGET cos he is cheap, no cos MA knows it will P us off.

A goalkeeper ???? JK must have sold Krul.

.PS I wonder if Cashley attended the Durham Miners Gala. !!!!!!!!!!!

  • 23 Iain Dowie // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:09 AM

How is Darren Bent a step backwards ? Someone explain to me how signing a striker who scores 15-20 goals every season . If he had played every game for villa we would have no chance of signing him. Some of you would rather we signed some south american wonderkid you found on football manager then sign a proven premierleague striker for around 5million. We struggled to score goals last season with only 1 capable striker so signing another striker like Darren Bent for me is a step forward.

  • 24 Mark29Hungary // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:09 AM

Cabaye + 10m for Rooney. That would be a good deal. But who will pay the 250 k/w?

    Ashley??? :)))))
    Wonga???? :))))

Or he will be the face of Sports Direct with a fat advertising contract?

Dummet, is a quality kid, strong physical, terrific left foot, great attitude, plays left or right back centre back, got to be our main back up, different class from willo who has to go now, wa screeming for a kidto put quality in the box, this kid has always done it proper footballer.

  • 28 Iain Dowie // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:16 AM

We will do alot better next season if our team can stay fit, with the likes of Krul, Cabaye, Tiote, Coloccini, Ben Arfa, Santon all missing large amounts of last season.

The likes of Anita, Sissoko, Mbiwa, Debuchy, Goufrran and Santon have all got good premierleague experience and gained a good understanding off their teammates.

And Playeyers such as Vickic, haidara, Bigi, and Campbell all coming through this season is only going to be an improvement on last season.

Plus the addition of 2 or 3 quality players. Think about the bigger picture, teams like Norwich , southampton and sunderland are all signing loads of players because they need to.

  • 29 geordiemark // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:16 AM

dont fool yourselfs with the cabaye for rooney rubbish, ashley wants the transfer fee to go with the andy carrol transfer money he nicely shafted away in a bank account

when ashley took over the toon he said by his own words I will spend 20 million a year on new players, hes never done it even if we owed over 100 million that was his fault and only his fault if he cant do due dillergence thats his problem not ours the mans a moron and should be hounded out of newcastle with his so called yes men brigade, he has conned us left right and centre but he wont con me any more thats for damn sure I am still a supporter even if i wont be going to the match anymore sod mr ashley cant wait for the day the greedy fat git goes

    Transfer
I do think we have decent team – part of games last year – not many – Man Utd away 70 mins Swansea away 2nd half for example – we played some excellent football.
We can do it but I don’t know if it is the managers tactics, self belief God knows but we end up looking dis-joined hoofing the ball anywhere

  • 32 geordiemark // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:20 AM

he will go anywhere where the club will pay ashley from £25million upwards

  • 33 JFK junior // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:23 AM

    Geordie – I agree. And a £21mil profit in a couple years isn’t bad.

As long as it is reinvested into the transfer kitty…! Big if!

  • 34 Mr Funk // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:26 AM

  • 35 plana // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:27 AM

Yes i agree Elliot, is terrible in net last night he showed us we need to bring another keeper. And it looks like Bent is on his way here. After all he has to be better than Shola!

I blame both..manager and players cannot adapt to the situation in my view.

  • 37 Mag.no // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:29 AM

Roy Morten is right. Jarstein is an ok goalkeeper from a really poor league. He would have a total meltdown in EPL. He’s like Hislop – great reflexes but totaly unstable. He’s got no confidence other than in interviews. He’s also had a couple of issues with the fans and the press where he looks like a complete idi0t.

Please leave this goalkeeper where he is!

how many goals did bent score last season not 20 not even 15 hes history and going back to what we used to do buy has been, with no value, i bet if we do sign him next closed season we are trying to dump him.

  • 41 fatman // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:35 AM

    richyg01

Yes and that’s the point he could not get into a struggling side, so he was not rated by villa.

  • 42 Mr Funk // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:36 AM

    @ TS

Still worth a try – probably cost the same as Bent but i think a better gamble to take – ie Austin on his way up and Bent is on his way down

  • 43 fatman // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:41 AM

Anyway he played 23 times and scored 6 goals his goals per game ratio is falling, and likely to only go down.

  • 44 plana // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:42 AM

I hope these rumours about Bent, joining us are just to distract attention away from our real targets. As Bent needs to play up front on his own plus he is always injured.

  • 45 Rooster // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:42 AM

Ginger, i have watched Dummet n Campbell n fergie who i still rate, n Tav, seen them all from kids, will only get vetter IF given more of a chance, worried with AP though, his Senior preferences n favs n all that. Shola n willo n jonas hav got to be binned, jonas is oards fav of course so at least another season of the argie gunslinger ha ha

  • 46 richyg01 // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:43 AM

    @41

I don’t think that the problem is that he is not rated, the problem is his relationship with the Manager.

  • 47 Lowesy // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:46 AM

    @43
he made 9 starts and scored in 5 of those starts, his subs appearances were all at 65mins+ in a struggling team. He wasn’t played because he fell out with Lambert not because he wasn’t still good.

  • 48 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:47 AM

  • 50 Yorkgeordie // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:56 AM

It might be more likely he would be a replacement for Elliot. I don’t think I am the only one who thinks he isn’t good enough

  • 51 toon kk // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:59 AM

Probably the ONLY first team signing will be Bent, he’s just the type of player JK and Pards are looking for. He’ll fit in with our Hoofball style of play.
Maybe MA is rite we don’t need any new signings after all, we did beat Motherwell last night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 52 Iain Dowie // Jul 17, 2013 at 11:59 AM

Fatman – Darren bent ,look at his record before last season, its more or less a ratio of 1:2. Now tell me hes a poor striker. He didnt play last season because of a fall out with the manager.
Some of the suggestions of signings on this blog are laughable, the sooner you all realise we are not a ‘massive club’ any more and start being realistic with players. Darren Bent will score goals for us no doubt. If we were to sign a striker from Spain or france they may take time to adapt meaning we have another below par season and everyone calling on pardew to be sacked. Goals= winning games.

  • 53 Mr Funk // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:00 PM

I am going to go out on a speculative limb and suggest that NUFC are going to buy Remy once QPR have signed another striker and that will be our only signing this summer!

  • 54 John Tudor // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:08 PM

who knows what the inner workings of the club have in store for us in terms of signings.personally it means nothing till the actions starts in ernest, time will tell

  • 55 nut meg // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:09 PM

If Bent comes in who drops out? He will be a Pardew and/or a Kinnear signing so it’s safe to assume he will play regardless of form.Any ideas.

  • 56 pawl250 // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:11 PM

    Iain Dowie

1 goal in 2 games ratio? 23 games 6 goals? nearly 1 goal in 4 games ratio.

I dont feel Darren Bent is the type of player we need. He is Cisse, but does even less, and lacks any pace.

Remy and De Jong should be our first signings! Or atleast the priority!

By doing that we not only add strikers to the list but versatile attacking wingers/midfielders with different style of play. De Jong is every bit as good if not better in the air than most strikers in the PL and Remy has pace, something we lack when looking at Cisse, Ba and Shola combo of previous season.

  • 57 Lowesy // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:12 PM

    @ nutmeg – 55

If Shola goes, we’ve got Cisse and Campbell as strikers… Campbell will play Capital Cup games, Cisse would be dropped dependent on form or played with another striker who’s brought in. We need 2 strikers purely for competition and to not have that fear of, ‘Bugger, Cisse’s injured, now who?’ ya know?

  • 58 Belfast // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:15 PM

I quite like Darren Bent. If we sign Bent and Remy and ship out Ameobi, I’ll be happy with that.

You’ll get far more goals from Bent then you will from Ameobi like.

Plus it will probably give Cisse a kick up the arse. Who kept his place last season no matter how awful he was.

  • 59 Phatoon // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:18 PM

    @Lowesy,

    Gouffran?

Although I agree that we need 2 strikers.

  • 60 Ginger // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:20 PM

    Rooster

So what do you think about Campbell? Think he’ll be a big star one day?

  • 61 Iain Dowie // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:21 PM

    pawl-
    Ipswich Town 122 (48)
    Charlton Athletic 68 (31)
    Tottenham Hotspur 60 (18)
    Sunderland 58 (32)
    Aston Villa 54 (21)

That is a good goal scoring record for me, when you take into account the fact he wasn’t a regular starter at spurs or aston villa.
Ok then if we were signing someone from france with some unpronounceable name with the same goal scoring record you would all want him. I would prefere Remy but Signing Bent is not a step backwards, bringing ameobi of the bench is certainly not what i want to see for another season.

  • 62 Lowesy // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:22 PM

    @ Phatoon – 59
Meh, he could be a striker if push comes to shove but more of a Marveaux role for me. Either wide or just behind, same role but different kind of player to him. I’d rather a goalscorer ya know?

  • 63 plana // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:22 PM

    The more strikers the better.

  • 64 pawl250 // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:23 PM

Gouffran has a Bellamy look to him,

His runs are smart, his finishing at times looks average at best.

I feel he could do very well upfront, he is also very very good in the air. He scored majority of his goals from headers at Bordeaux, and looking at him you wouldn’t think it.

I feel is will not be the makeshift winger this year, especially with a fully fit squad.

He is an option, and versatile though. Rather have him 2nd fiddle than Bent though!

  • 65 toon kk // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:23 PM

MA and JK are hoping for a big money sale of one of our best players, forgetting their value will have dropped a hell of alot after last season.
They want money in the bank left over after any new signing is bought in.
The sale of AC made MA think this is the way forward but massive profit deals are rare.

    Latest from the Sausage newsline.

Pardew mentioned he hopes to have a new signing in by next week. I’ve been told that it isn’t Bent that he was on about. I got this off one of the players who also told me that they hear wispers but they arn’t allowed to talk names to people as they all have stuff written into their contracts at Newcastle about this.

  • 69 pawl250 // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:28 PM

    Iain Dowie -

    Pele – 694 games to 650 goals….

I am not comparing the two but based on his last season he must be good right?!

My point – IT DOESNT MATTER what his goal scoring record was 2,3,4,5+ years ago, all that matters is his last season.

And that was 1 in 4, why because he lost his quality attribute, his pace. Hes always injured too.

Hes what I call “past his best” and will only now decline.

I would prefer him to Shola, hell I prefer the honky tonk man over Shola, but I rather replace Shola with talent, than another “has been”.

We may aswell go for Owen, offer him out of retirement, he has a much better record than Bent. Or how about Henry? You see my point, these are no doubt great striker at the peak of their career, but they are now past it, as is Darren Bent.

  • 70 Nufcjoss // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:28 PM

NOO!! Tim so much better! Jarstein whould be backup, a role he will not be satisfied with.. his bin first choise for 10 years, he will not sit for long.

  • 71 Rake // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:29 PM

Bent as competition for Cisse as Ameobi is simply not competing. I would take Bent only if we get a winger as well. Someone who can cross and won’t cut in at every oppertunity.

  • 72 Perchinho Pricing Blunder // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:30 PM

@dowie is this like moneyball? Where they get a disillusioned but proven guy from the Yankees because he gets on base.
Bent wasn’t played because him and the manager fell out. He scores goals. We need goals. Things to think about.
    1) he gets on with our manager so will get mo
    re games
    2) when he starts he has a hell of a scoring record
    3) he can be rotated with cisse to reduce fitness issues
    4) it’s world cup year, he’s going to be motivated to get into the England setup.
    5) if we pay 5million that’s a decent deal (how much was Connor Wickham for instance?)

  • 73 rainrix // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:32 PM

Bent is too similar to cisse. We’ve all seen that cisse and ba couldn’t play together in the same role. If pards plans on partnering them together then we’re simply going to have the same problems as last year, one player being wasted. Besides last season the problem wasn’t so much cisse wasn’t scoring, we simply weren’t creating good enough chances.

We do need a striker no doubt but i’d rather we sort out our midfield 1st and get some competent wingers so we can actually create chances. Then focus on a striker to back up cisse.

Pawl- So you say hes past his best, well i say hes still got a few years in him. Your welcome to your opinion, But how many goals did you expect him to score while sitting on the bench ? Lost of strikers have had bad seasons.
    OK then look at this
Kevin gamiero- 25 games 8 goals- would you still have him?
Demba Ba 14 games – 2 goals would you have him back?
Players like these given a full season of playing would score many goals but because they are on the bench its not possible.
bad season doesnt mean you’ve passed it.

  • 76 nut meg // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:39 PM

    Pawl @64
I agree with that about Gouffran & that’s why as a priority IMHO we need a creative player in first.I apologize for banging on about who i think we need but SDJ is for my money the stand out player.I do understand that you can’t just sign players as if your ordering from a mail order club & you can only get them when they become available. So a creative player 1st then a striker for me.

  • 77 G // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:41 PM

    Perchino -

    How much was Michu? (2m)

Or how much was Bellamy? (5m)

    Or Benteke? (7m)

All upcoming stars, approaching the peak of their career, hell even De Jong would be approx 7m

5m for a HAS BEEN, with a good record, but who is not only lost his pace is now constantly injured am sorry but PASS.

  • 82 Lowesy // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:45 PM

  • 83 pawl250 // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:47 PM

    Iain -

I would be happy for Gameiro to come as he is unproven, he does not rely on pace which is often lost in later years.

Ba may have a poor record with Chelsea, but again he has not lost his yard of pace.

Bent has, he has lost what made him get a great record. Why else would anyone sell him if he is soo great?!

Sorry but we can agree to disagree.

  • 84 Iain Dowie // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:49 PM

    Perchinho Pricing Blunder-
i agree , as far as a striker that is going to score goals you cant say bent is a bad option. With the likes of Ben Arfa , cabaye and marvuex ect he will bang them in. Im not saying hes the best option out there but if we sign him he would be step forward.

I would rather have Remy but it looks like we are going to get Bent so deal with it and support him if he signs instead of getting on his back before hes even played a game.

  • 85 TimKrulFan // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:49 PM

We need a ST and two wingers. I’m happy with bent, we should go for N’Zogbia and Hoilett. I have also seen Everton have loaned Gerrard Deulofeu from Barca been watching him on YouTube since he was like 14 he’s a future star.

  • 88 Iain Dowie // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:52 PM

Pawl- Players have been sold due to disagreement with managers and the club. Darren Bents goal scoring record wasnt because of his pace, its more down to his strikers instinct- being in the right place at the right time and making timely runs accross defenders which are attributes players like ameobi don’t have.

  • 89 Perchinho Pricing Blunder // Jul 17, 2013 at 12:55 PM

@pawl were any of them English or proven premier league goal scorers at bents level?
I’m discussing bent because he is a target and I’d take him. It’s just where our opinions differ. A motivated bent could easily add another set of double figures onto our goal tally. I’m not saying he’s our best option but he’s not a bad one at all.
And I’d take de jong. Definitely. Not sure we’d get him for as little as 7million though

  • 90 Lowesy // Jul 17, 2013 at 1:00 PM

    @ TimKrulFan – 85
Hoilett and N’Zogbia? N’Zogbia was a bright prospect, but he reminds me of Taarabt too much, flashes of skill but overall just not worth the hassle. He’s moody, lethargic and non-existent for most of the game. Hoilett, again, I liked him at Blackburn. But he joined QPR for the money and if he couldn’t get a game there, then he shouldn’t be playing for us.

  • 91 toon kk // Jul 17, 2013 at 1:11 PM

  • 93 Transfer Sage // Jul 17, 2013 at 1:18 PM

    On Bent

He has been inconsistent throughout his career. Did well at charlton and Sunderland, struggled at spurs and villa.

He seems to be a player where if things aren’t going his way he falls out with the manager, like redknapp and lambert. But you never know the reasons why so maybe it wasn’t his fault.

Talk at villa they would owe Sunderland 6mil or so if he player more games so maybe that’s why he didn’t start a lot as they were not wanting to waste money when they had benteke already and wanted rid of him anyway.

I’d take him here but I’d still like us to get a genuine top class striker. Liverpool paid 22mil for Suarez….surely we can do the same. A striker is key as goals win games…must make sure we have plenty up top

Yeah, it was said, then they spent near 20million on Schurrle who is a centre forward, and have been heavily linked with Cavani, Hulk, and now admitted to bidding for Rooney. Mourinho also said he will be doing all he can to help Torres get back to form, and he only plays 1 striker.

No chance Lukaku will have any intention of sitting on a bench half the time when he needs a full season playing and scoring to force his way into the starting 11 for Belgium in the World Cup.

  • 103 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 17, 2013 at 1:48 PM

    Tads,
I think if we wanted him, we could get him, even on loan would do for the season. Give Campbell another year to develop elsewhere on loan. I’ve seen reports saying that West Ham and Chelsea have already held talks about a loan deal for Lukaku after missing out on Bony, but it was dependent on a Chelsea arrival.

Giovinco would be good, but is more of a number 10. Hernandez, well if Rooney leaves there is no chance of that happening.

    Pawl @ 81

The three players (Michu, Bellamy & Benteke) you mention were all, to most fans, unknowns and therefore very risky buys. There are probably as many, if not more, buys of unknown players who have since disappeared. It is only in retrospect that we know what good buys these three were.

The question is whether a club buys a proven premiership goal scorer, albeit possibly past his peak, or risk an unknown with no premiership experience.

Possibly the best answer is to get both !

  • 106 Jamiemac // Jul 17, 2013 at 2:00 PM

  • 107 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 17, 2013 at 2:01 PM

    Tads,
I’d say it is looking more and more like Cisse could be off. Which, given the fact Shola is looking to leave, Ba left n Jan, and Best and Lovenkrands left last summer, could be a knockout blow.

To be honest, unless Campbell has come back to training looking like a cross between Messi, Drogba, and Romario, then we will need minimum 3 strikers capable of sticking the ball in the back of the net. With one being top top drawer.

Are Anzhi still interested? They missed out on PEA, have they got anyone else in since?

Its an argument Bent is a “risky” buy for his 1:4 goal ratio last term.

Consider Villa paying 20m for him, not playing him is a big statement of intent on their part at how much they value him.

7m is bad business, 5m is bad business.

Feel that money could be used elsewhere, perhaps Alderwield would not be far from that amount of money!!

I’d guarantee that bent gets 10 goals in the season of we play him regular and also pushes cisse for his main striker spot which helps.

You know…this whole Cissé thing is annoying the hell outta me now, for hell’s sake if the stories are true (which I’m sceptical about) then it’s incredibly bad man management what is our best striker. First we make him train by himself, second we leave him out of pre-season all over him not wanting to wear the Wonga logo…which to a point I think we can all understand. His religious views may be stronger than the other Muslims at our club, after all he is the only one that celebrates by praying after scoring. The way I see it…if the stories ARE true, then the club needs to stop basically saying “Do what we say or we’ll make life hard for you,” and if they’re not true and Cissé is really kicking up a stink/being awkward, then he needs to move on to another club so we can (hopefully) get another striker in…cos let’s face it, we all know if we sold a player like Cissé we would probably have more chance of signing a striker faster with the money we get for him. Hopefully he stays and this all gets resolved, as I as I know many others do rate Cissé and hope he rediscovers his 1st seasons form. Either way…it just needs to get resolved, because I’m sick of all the negative media attention at the minute. The life of a Newcastle fan eh? Never simple.

In the bigger picture we have the best squad in years, and needed structure is set.

The youth academy surely needs an upgrade.
If Im correct, our last upgrade was in 2000 or something like that.

But when you think about it, is it much easier to fund the academy when the rest of the clubs structure already are in place – aint it?

I think so.. I think thats Ashleys next step, when we have qualified for europe.

    Laurits,
So you can’t have a functioning academy without already being in Europe? That is ridiculous. Many clubs produce youngsters before they become successful. Some never become successful as they then sell the youngsters on to keep the club running.

“What I’ve seen of Pardews tactical skills, need an compensation – and thats what we’ve got.”

Sorry, I have no idea what this is meant to mean, but we have a group of technically able players who are being set up in a way that doesn’t suit them. I was willing to give Pards a chance, but we continued to play a style unsuited to the players when he had a mainly fit squad.

The best squad in years, maybe in parts, but I don’t think I remember us being this weak up front since we sold Cole and replaced him with Kitson.

Equally, we are arguably weaker in the goalkeeping department then we have been for years. Harper/Given or Harper/Krul is better than Krul/Elliot.

Just a quick, random question but NUFC have just posted some photos from yesterdays game on the official site and looking through them I noticed a couple of the players from both teams weren’t wearing shin pads, is this not against the football law, so to speak. I just thought id see if anyone knew if every player, playing whether it is a competitive game or not has to wear them. Or is it just me?

    This is ambition…Napoli

President Aurelio De Laurentiis told La Repubblica Sport: “It’s true that we’re negotiating for Gonzalo Higuain and Leandro Damiao. The money we got for Cavani was 64.5mil and added to the 60mil we had set aside for the transfer budget there will be 124.5mil to carefully invest on Napoli.” He also confirmed that Real’s Spain defender Raul Albiol was close to joining the Italian club.

Why pay £17m for Rooney when we can get Mauro Zarate for free? I’d take £25m for Cabaye.

    Sign:

    Benteke – £18m
    Zarate – Free
    Siem De Jong – £9m
    Alderweireld – £6.5m
    Remy – £8m
    Mcmanaman – £6m

    Sell:

    Cabaye – £25m
    Obertan – £2m
    Gosling – £1.5m
    Williamson – £1.5m
    Shola Ameobi – £1m

The lad wanted to travel so is it
The TOON demanding he wears the Wanka Strip or is it
Wanka demanding that he wears the strip as the sponsorship deal is nul and void (part of the deal demands that all players have to wear a Wanka strip)

    Like to know.

Mcmanaman, Ben Arfa, Marveaux, Gutierrez and Zarate is good competition on the wings. Ben Arfa, Zarate and Marveaux can also play in the attacking midfield role.

We do have too many midfielders at the club. Too many average one’s

We’d have Zarate, Remy, Cisse, Benteke and Gouffran competing for the striking spots. That’s great competition in my opinion.

Since when has religion meant adhering to fixed rules? I know it’s supposed to, but everyone seems to have their own interpretation of it based on who they learned from, what religious leader they listen to and their own situation.

They do have Islamic banks that operate on a pretty similar way to our banks, although rather than being classed as interest on a loan, they pay rent or some such thing. They operate almost identically though.

But Wonga is something completely different and there’s no equivalent in Muslim culture.

So maybe whoever is advising him in religious matters has said this.

I can’t imagine the other Muslims on the squad are too happy though. Is Cisse suggesting that he’s a better Muslim than them? Or are they understanding enough to believe that everyone has their own spirituality..

If, it’s the latter then it does tend to agree that it’s a moral issue…it would be a rare thing for a footballer to stand firm based on morals in this day and age!

Even if you are religious and even if you believe that the bible/Koran etc. is the word of god passed down to man, there are huge problems:
    – there are different religions and sects that interpret things differently
    – the texts have been transcribed, translated and interpreted many many times over centuries
    – even the meanings of some words have changed

Even if these texts were originally the word of god, they’ve been corrupted so much by now that they can’t be. There are constant contradictions and plenty of vague passages than can be interpreted in different ways.

So instead, properly religious people usually follow religious leaders who have interpreted the texts in a certain way…and of course they all interpret it differently too…

I don’t agree though. There are more progressive imams and there are radical imams. There are some muslims who interpret things to the extreme and become terrorists, yet there are many muslims who drink, eat pork, take out loans etc.

I would think a justification could be made if Cisse was donating a certain amount of his salary to charity, so therefore the Virgin Money sponsorship could have been seen to do good as it didn’t really do anyone any harm and he wasn’t taking out a loan himself or actively sponsoring it. Wonga could be seen as just a step too far as people are actively campaigning against it.

Religion isn’t as clear as perhaps it should be…if it was, we wouldn’t have holy wars, extremists, break-out religions etc.

Can I just clarify the Islamic difference between Wonga and Virgin or Northern Rock. In the strictest sense they are the same, all riba (interest) is haram (forbidden) and people should do their utmost to avoid it. However, given the prevalence of interest in modern life there has now become a differentiation in the meaning. Indeed, Islamic banking services have created many ways of avoiding riba but still essentially charging interest in the same way as conventional banks. For example, if you we’re to get a loan to buy a car from an Islamic bank essentially what happens is they buy the car outright and then agree to sell it to you but for a higher price, which you can pay in instalments. This is deemed trading rather than interest.

Given the prevalence of things such as interest in modern times it has become harder and harder to stick to the religious ruling of avoiding it entirely. Instead now the general opinion is that what is truly haram is when the loan redemption will be felt very heavily by the borrower but that they are in a severe situation which means that they are desperate for funds. The differentiation between this and other forms of interest is that it specifically targets those who are most vulnerable and the level of loan repayment is so great that it can cause severe problems for the borrower.

Of course, this opinion is entirely subjective and as such what one person considers to represent excessive interest levels that may cause harm may not be considered the same by others. It is this rather murky but quite significant differentiation which I believe is behind Cisse’s stance.

I didn’t say that his mosque was going to make money out of it!

I said that with Virgin Money, it’s a fairly normal and accepted part of life and there are Muslim equivalents that will charge a very similar amount of money and just not call it interest. Read 2_goal_tino’s post for a bit more info that I didn’t know off the top of my head.

I’m speculating of course, but he could have been told that he couldn’t profit from Virgin Money, so anything deemed to have been received on the basis of that should have been donated to charity.

However, there is public outcry about Wonga and its money lending so it becomes a different situation. The church can modernise a bit too you know but it doesn’t surprise me that Wonga is just too far for some.

  • 202 ToonDarnSarf // Jul 17, 2013 at 4:06 PM

Can I just say, that there’s no point in just speaking to a Muslim to understand this issue and assuming that because he/she’s a Muslim that what they say is true for all, any more than speaking to someone who says they are a Christian will give you an understanding of what every Christian is thinking.

There will be people on this forum who claim to be Christian, a few may be very devout, but I bet many are not. Speaking to one who doesn’t go to church often and doesn’t know the bible well, won’t help you understand someone who does.

SSN are reporting that QPR have had a £5M bid accepted, and what’s the harm in matching that £5M bid. He’s English, get us goals and is still only young (25). Fair enough people say that the SPL is at the same standard as the championship but scoring 63gls in 95apps is a fantastic return. He could probably guarantee us 18+ goals a season. No no no no no no no.

Just because he’s English, 25 and going for £5M does not mean that we should spend that kind of money on him. What would be the point?

If none of the top 10 are after him and if he prefers to go to QPR rather than Norwich stump up £5M for him, then he can’t be that good can he?

He’s exactly the kind of player I do not want to see us sign. We need to be signing players with the potential to play in a CL team, either us in a few years or another club with a huge transfer fee coming to us.

Or…if not, then I’d accept proven PL performers like Bent.

    TDS,
That is for certain. No one will want to portray anything religious in a bad light, that is just asking for trouble. It is a very sensitive issue, and one the club, if they are alienating him for, are handling in a terrible manner. If it is on the grounds of religion, or just a moral stance, they should handle it better. If it is cash, and the desire for a new contract, then again, freezing him out isn’t a good way either.

I thought we had appointed a new PR person (not JK) or was it just a supporter liaison?

  • 216 Transfer Sage // Jul 17, 2013 at 4:29 PM

I agree each person has a slight interpretation of their faith an that this can change over time and experiences the person has.

I just think the holy book from any religion should be followed 100% or else you aren’t a true believer as you pick and choose which of gods words you follow. The religious books, although collated over time, have been consistent more many many years so it should be an all or nothing situation to be a real believer.

I do agree though that its open to interpretation on a lot of aspects but pretty sure the Koran is firmly against interest on any money landing and is very clear, not vague on that topic.

It sounds like there have been several meetings involving the club, Cisse, his advisers and Wonga, but that no resolution has been found yet.

They can’t set a precedent of allowing the players to choose what sponsors they are willing to wear and what they don’t want to unless there are serious extenuating circumstances. Likewise, they can’t release a statement until they have something to say. Is it worth releasing a statement to say that they are still having discussions when that’s already been reported in the press?

I’m always in a dilemma when it comes to religion.

I fully accept you can’t separate or treat people differently based on race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality etc as you can’t decide these things.

Religion though is something that you do decide on…although believers will argue you have little choice as you must follow your gods teachings or face punishment.

The holy books haven’t been consistent though, and like I said, they have been translated back and forth between languages over the centuries. Even if you consider that the wordings may have remained fairly consistent over the last few decades, the meanings of certain words have changed as languages develop.

And there are different passages in these holy books, do you follow all or some of them? If a Christian follows Leviticus then they may “put to death” a “man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman” but doesn’t it also say something somewhere about not killing?

Some people have even suggested that the meaning of the verse could be “bros before hoes” and then mates shouldn’t lie (as in not tell the truth) to each other, but it’s ok to lie to their wives! Tongue in cheek perhaps, but shows the difficulty of interpreting old texts based on modern interpretations of words.

  • 228 Bring Back Laurent Robert // Jul 17, 2013 at 4:38 PM

For people deriding Cisse and making facile arguments that he wore Virgin Money, or gambles himself, so therefore shouldn’t have qualms about Wonga, come on, you know there are degrees of immorality and directly preying on vulnerable people is a step too far for Cisse, who comes from a background of poverty.

Perhaps he’s not a devout Muslim, maybe he has that as a basis and makes his own mind up, keeping some autonomy in his interpretation, like many religious people do these days.

Maybe off the back of all this, we’ll see the first ever player to sponsor their own shirt and put a charity on it, if he could come to some sort of agreement with Wonga and MA?

We get £6m per season for shirt sponsorship from Wonga, 11 players in shirts with their logo emblazoned on the across, that’s approximately £540k per shirt – Cisse could put his money where his mouth is and ‘buy his shirt’ off Wonga, despite the fact he’d then be funding them and that would no doubt contravene his creed, raising a catch 22, so can’t see that happening. He’s a generous footballer that already gives a lot away, so he’s not going to give about 10% of his wages to a shady company he dislikes, even if it meant he could put his own charity on his shirt.

I don’t even know if any of that is possible with all the litigation involved. Just a stream of thought.

Anyway, if he’s that adamant, he could be gone, which while I’d applaud him for standing up against a virtuously bankrupt company, would be a sad way to go

It would be great if the sponsor would offer a compromise but then that makes out Wonga to be in contradiction to Islam. And then where does that leave the other Muslim players? It’s a tricky situation…

Yeah I know, but it’s a silly rumour. Why would Chelsea want to get rid of their best players? Rooney needs a new challenge. He definitely needs to move to a bigger club. I can see him going to Spurs or Arsenal.

  • 234 2_goal_tino // Jul 17, 2013 at 4:41 PM

The thing about religion is that it is an entirely personal matter. It is not acceptable to say that this stance is contradicting his previous decision to wear virgin shirts for the reasons I outlined in my previous post. I live in Saudi Arabia and have travelled to every Middle Eastern country and an array of other Islamic countries whether they be Sunni or Shia; salafi, deobandi or ahl al-Hadith. There is no one type of Islam it is incredibly diverse. There is a vast difference between Muslims in Lebanon and those in Saudi Arabia, imagine how large the difference is between Bangladeshis, Indonesians and Ivorians! There is absolutely no one Islamic ruling on this issue and Cisse’s standpoint is entirely valid and as I have outlined in my previous post there is a definite differentiation between standard interest rates and more exorbitant ones – whether an individual chooses to adhere to the strictest ruling or this more nuanced one is entirely personal but both are equally supported by Islamic scholars.

I’m playing devil’s advocate mate. Too many people seem to think that he’s using religion as an excuse to get a transfer, but I think that’s because most people don’t understand the Islamic faith very well.

I’m not saying that everyone should go out and buy the Koran to better understand our Muslim brothers and sisters, but I am saying that people should keep an open mind about a topic that they don’t understand.

This could all turn out to be a storm in a tea-cup. As far as I’m aware there’s only been one incident taken this far before and Kanoute was allowed to wear a blank shirt in Spain.

The bible hasn’t changed for hundreds of years, on the catholic faith anyway…other Christian groups do add other books to it.

My point is that if you triply believe the books to be the word of god you should follow it all, even those ridiculous laws like you quoted there. I don’t see how you can say let’s change with the times, if a god is all knowing he would surely have not made a mistake.

In reality things change as these teachings get outdated but it theory you shouldn’t be able to pick and chose.

Forcing him to stay at home? How isn’t that a bad way to deal with it! Leaving the situation with no official statement, which allows all this to talk. Their are people slagging Cisse off, for something we don’t even know is the case. 1 simple statement to give a bit of clarity makes perfect logical sense. Watch it get blown even more out of proportion by the media tomorrow!

No one is saying give him a new contract/say he doesn’t have to wear the strip, but alienating him, leaving the situation completely open to interpretation, and therefore abuse flying at people for religion/moral/greed.

If it is a religious matter, and the club have effectively said, until you give up your religious beliefs on this matter you can stay home and rot. You think that is a good stance from the club?

I just don’t get how you can take the teaching on money lending and be so offended not to wear a sponsor but wear a different sponso which is the same but lower interest. On that one topic it should be black and white if you obey the rule.

It’s like a much less extreme version of thou shalt not kill. Saying I only killed one so ok, but I’d draw the line at somebody killing 10z

You sound about as religious as I am, that is to say not at all…

But for people who are, there’s a huge range of belief systems out there and many different interpretations of the bible. As I said to you, how can you interpret that homosexuals should be put to death yet you shouldn’t murder anyone? It’s a complete contradiction so impossible to follow.

Some religions believe that Leviticus should be included, some believe it shouldn’t.

Religion is a very personal issue and everyone follow it slightly differently.

As far as I’m concerned, religious leaders should live in virtual poverty relying on their congregation to supply them with the bare minimum that they need to live. God should ensure that they get what they need surely? Any and all other donations to the church should be used to provide for the needy in society.

Ok, that’s not at all football related…

Come on, let’s sign some strikers!

I fully understand that religion has changed a lot, especially on recent times due to society changing and no longer living in fear of a god. I see how each person can adopt their own level of each teaching and how strictly it is to be followed.

My point was that this shouldn’t happen as if you triply believe be word of god you should follow your religions books to the letter.

From the BBC site, it seems as though Cisse has quit the tour rather than the club has sent him home. What are the club supposed to do if Cisse’s contract states that he must abide by the club sponsorship rules and Wonga’s contract with the club states that all players must wear their kit for training and matches?

The club can’t tell Cisse to wear a blank shirt without being in breach of contract with Wonga so all parties have to agree.

I’d like there to be an official statement but there has to be some form of consensus first, otherwise the club is just reporting nothing at all. There will be discussions now between the club, Wonga, lawyers, the PFA, Cisse and his representatives regarding what to do next.

But you must grasp that a sentence in the bible can be interpreted in different ways. Take this blog for example. A quite from Pardew gets interpreted in a positive way from one person and a very negative way from another. Same words, two different interpreations.

Religion couldn’t have survived if every religious person took it literally. Take this passage as an example: “I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.” (1 Timothy 2:12) So…no female teachers or any in authority? Presumably they can’t vote either….

There’s a huge number of sites on the internet about understanding the bible. Critical topics on homosexuality, women, suicide, abortion, killing, the Sabbath, blah blah..

Don’t you think that the texts were altered in past centuries to accommodate the rich and powerful?

  • 257 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 17, 2013 at 5:03 PM

    TDS,
Yeah, his agent says club wouldn’t let him, the club say he refused. Brilliant, makes everything so much simpler.

I agree there are contractual difficulties. The precedent is Kanoute, but I’m sure the sponsors will have agreed to that. Thing is, if the club have known about this for as long as the papers have been mentioning it, about a week after the deal was announced, then why are we only now sitting down to discuss it?

This could have been done through last season, or right at the end, rather than disrupting the pre season.

Whatever the situation (I think it is largely irrelevant if it is religious or moral at this point) it has been handled badly. From the first media story to whenever there is a resolution.

  • 262 2_goal_tino // Jul 17, 2013 at 5:07 PM

    @Transfer Sage
First off to clarify it is not about money lending at all this is entirely acceptable, the issue is riba (interest ). It’s very complicated and nuanced but as I said before even Islamic Banks charge interest for all intents and purposes. However they get round the system by saying it is not riba but is in fact trading. There are similar ways to get round the prohibition on gambling. The vast majority of Muslims accept that it is almost impossible to avoid interest in some form or another these days, however decide to shift the parameters of the ruling. The ultimate meaning behind the original ruling is that it is not allowed to make money from other people’s hardship ie need for a loan. The reasoning amongst many nowadays is that the standard levels of interest are not deemed to necessarily cause hardship because they are relatively small. In contrast if the interest rate could cause harm, e.g with Wonga then it is unacceptable. I appreciate the nuances of the issue but hope this clears it up a little

To add to 2_goal_tino’s comment, this means that Virgin Money could be seen as acceptable because their business model was simply to get paid for doing a service, i.e. loan people money for what they need (house, new car etc.) and they operate in a very similar way to Muslim banks. Ok, they do charge interest but there are many examples of Muslims having to bend their rules a little in order to live in a western society.

Whereas nobody goes to Wonga unless they are desperate. If you need a couple of hundred for an emergency, and you can’t get it from a friend, your bank or a credit card, then you’re in a pretty bad way anyway.
