There are reports in Norway today, that we have been alerted to by one of our Norwegian readers, Tor Magne Madsen, that Newcastle are looking into signing the 6’3″ Norwegian International goalkeeper Rune Jarstein
Rune Jarstein – 28 year-old Norway International
The 28 year-old goalkeeper currently plays for Viking, and he has played 30 times for Norway, and could be the third choice goalkeeper brought in this summer to replace the departed Steve Harper, who joined Hull City a couple of days ago.
Rune has just one year left on his contract at Viking, so he could be brought in for a nominal fee this summer, and it would appear that Viking are willing to sell too, with the fee said to be around £250K – something Newcastle should be able to afford. 😀
Rune has established himself as the Norwegian number one over the last three or four years, and has played well in the Norwegian league for ten years.
Rune can be very good, but is prone to making mistakes, when he lets his concentration lag, which is true for most goalkeepers, come to think of it.
Rune would probably be brought in as Newcastle’s number three goalkeeper, but we wonder where that would leave his career at International level, if he’s not playing regular first team football.
He has played 255 first team games for Odd Grenland, Rosenborg and Viking in the Tippeligaen over the last ten years.
What do you think?

Comment #3To every one who thinks right back cover is a priority please look at this article. I know Anita isn’t great 1st choice right back but he is excellent cover.

I think we seem to be covered pretty well in both wing back positions.
We need wingers and strikers IMO.

LOL.
On SSN, ManUre fans are wanting £20M + Mata, which would do us a favour as they wouldnt be poaching Cabs then!

from previous….i dont think we have a good team. we have some nice technical players but thats only one aspect. As an individual the decision making is poor from most, fitness is poor, strength is poor…etc etc
I think the technical side is overplayed in football…its one aspect but the best players are technical and smart….our players dont seem to be able to think and adapt in a game.

Comment #13We certainly need another goalie, as Elliot is not up to the level of the Premier league. More league one standard.

We wont be able to afford Rooneys wages. 250k per week would basically cover the wages of our whole squad

Comment #19i’ve seen that liverpool are in for Shaqiri, wasn’t he a target for us at one time?
funnily enough, so was Christian Erikson. Shouldn’t we be buying these players when we target them? There was another player, Barcelona are bidding for him, a midfielder I think, can’t remember their name though. But it was the same deal.
also, why are we in for another keeper? Krul, Elliot, Alnwick?

Comment #21We won’t get Wayne Ronny!
But…if man utd sell him to Chelsea, cash plus Juan Mata, then we sell them Cabaye for Mata, straight swap.
Seems pretty straight forward…! 🙂

Comment #22Geordiemark has the measure of Mr Cashley. A failed pro squash player, a ruthless arrogant person, with no respect for anyone, and least of all the Geordie nation “The Toon” .
Joe Kinnear’s appointment, what an absolute joke and an embarrassment to NUFC ( Cashley’s warped sense of revenge) He demeans our intelligence by purporting this to be anything other than extracting the P. MA will never forgive us for the way we rightfully embarrassed him in front of his family at St James Park, and he will try and extract his revenge, drop by drop on the Toon Fans. Speak to Mr Whelan about Cashley, talk to the city about Cashley “A nasty, nasty piece of work”
Who of us believes MAs team did not carry out due diligence when he bought NUFC. He knew exactly what the books were telling him. He chose not to refute the stories of a slip up, to court favour. “Stand with the lads on the terraces, act like one of the loyal supporters” is that sheeps I can smell,no its Bulls
He hires” yes men” like Parsnip (last chance saloon). C.H. told him the truth sacked, K.K. told him the truth sacked, I would just love it for Kev to tell everything about this carpetbagger, but he is locked into a compromise agreement. A.S. told him the truth, contract terminated, Als bar closed.
You will run out of luck one day Ash.
Now the transfer saga all over again. Darren Bent not required by Aston Villa who nearly ended up in the Championship!!!!!!!!! A TOON TARGET cos he is cheap, no cos MA knows it will P us off.
A goalkeeper ???? JK must have sold Krul.
.PS I wonder if Cashley attended the Durham Miners Gala. !!!!!!!!!!!

Comment #23How is Darren Bent a step backwards ? Someone explain to me how signing a striker who scores 15-20 goals every season . If he had played every game for villa we would have no chance of signing him. Some of you would rather we signed some south american wonderkid you found on football manager then sign a proven premierleague striker for around 5million. We struggled to score goals last season with only 1 capable striker so signing another striker like Darren Bent for me is a step forward.

Comment #24Cabaye + 10m for Rooney. That would be a good deal. But who will pay the 250 k/w?
Ashley??? :)))))

Or he will be the face of Sports Direct with a fat advertising contract?

Dummet, is a quality kid, strong physical, terrific left foot, great attitude, plays left or right back centre back, got to be our main back up, different class from willo who has to go now, wa screeming for a kidto put quality in the box, this kid has always done it proper footballer.

Comment #28We will do alot better next season if our team can stay fit, with the likes of Krul, Cabaye, Tiote, Coloccini, Ben Arfa, Santon all missing large amounts of last season.
The likes of Anita, Sissoko, Mbiwa, Debuchy, Goufrran and Santon have all got good premierleague experience and gained a good understanding off their teammates.
And Playeyers such as Vickic, haidara, Bigi, and Campbell all coming through this season is only going to be an improvement on last season.
Plus the addition of 2 or 3 quality players. Think about the bigger picture, teams like Norwich , southampton and sunderland are all signing loads of players because they need to.

Comment #29dont fool yourselfs with the cabaye for rooney rubbish, ashley wants the transfer fee to go with the andy carrol transfer money he nicely shafted away in a bank account
when ashley took over the toon he said by his own words I will spend 20 million a year on new players, hes never done it even if we owed over 100 million that was his fault and only his fault if he cant do due dillergence thats his problem not ours the mans a moron and should be hounded out of newcastle with his so called yes men brigade, he has conned us left right and centre but he wont con me any more thats for damn sure I am still a supporter even if i wont be going to the match anymore sod mr ashley cant wait for the day the greedy fat git goes

I do think we have decent team – part of games last year – not many – Man Utd away 70 mins Swansea away 2nd half for example – we played some excellent football.
We can do it but I don’t know if it is the managers tactics, self belief God knows but we end up looking dis-joined hoofing the ball anywhere

Comment #37Roy Morten is right. Jarstein is an ok goalkeeper from a really poor league. He would have a total meltdown in EPL. He’s like Hislop – great reflexes but totaly unstable. He’s got no confidence other than in interviews. He’s also had a couple of issues with the fans and the press where he looks like a complete idi0t.
Please leave this goalkeeper where he is!
